  • Take a ride on the steepest cog railway in Austria from St. Wolfgang to the top of the 1,783 m tall Schafberg. In 35 minutes, the SchafbergBahn will carry you to the top. With its striking summit, this is one of Austria’s most beautiful and scenic mountains, treating visitors to incomparable views of the surrounding natural landscapes.
Let's hike down! It's so much fun!!
The first part of the hike down is the most beautiful one. You'll get to see and enjoy lots of breathtaking views and landscapes. The hills are alive! with the sound of music!! 1-2 hrs
The last hour of the hike is through the woods where you‘ll mostly walk on a steep gravel road. Be careful, this can be slippery.
Take plenty of water before you leave and some snacks as there are no shops along the way.
Also, bring a hat if it's a sunny day.

Just stunning. You’re right, so clean. I’d like to visit Poland at some point. We never knew Austria has so much to offer if you like being outdoors.

I am from that region and it makes me happy that you enjoyed your trip to Austria. The view is really awesome, I have to go up there again. I have only been up there once with my parents when I was a child.

And if I may give you a well meant advice: Please treat yourself with proper hiking shoes. They help you avoid nasty [ankle] injuries and are better for the joints overall, and since your brain/body doesn't have to keep you in balance so much due to the better support from your shoes, the hike will feel less exhausting. The infrastructure in Austria makes you feel as if you are in the comfort zone all the time. But even on the Schafberg you are in high alpine environment and people all the time have to be picked up by helicopter or also die up there (last guy in March).

We loved it that much we are heading back there in August for a few days. Currently planning some hikes in the surrounding areas. Can't wait :)

@@graemesmith77 Check out the hike starting at Krimml Waterfalls through Krimmler Achental to Warnsdorfer Hütte. Quite long but mostly flat and very scenic hike. You can spend a night at the Warnsdorfer Hütte which provides a nice view and is directly next to a glacier.
