Graeme. I'm 62 and worked in the same job for all my life, for the last 15 years as a freelancer. I've now been freezed out because of my age. I did well, usually people in my industry start to be shifted out at 50! My last job in the industry I was in was last year. My wife works in a good job so money is ok, but I'm having to think outside the box as to what I should do next and keep an independence. It's taking me some time and I've really enjoyed the release from what was a pretty pressured job. My allotment has kept me sane and kept me active and invigorated and my aim is to keep that commitment, and perhaps amalgamate it with something else that is related. Not totally sure what yet, but just to say I totally understand what you are going through. The anxiety rollercoaster for me is a constant, but I've learned that no matter what I'm doing, or how successful I am, that is just a part and parcel of life in general.

I'm almost 60 , and I have a great job as a software development manager. I've been in technology for almost 40 years. But I love landscaping and I will probably start a landscaping company once I retire from my technology job. So I completely understand. I'm very lucky because my wife has been building a company and we have properties to maintain. I pay landscapers to maintain two, but I maintain one myself, and really enjoy it. I have a zero turn mower, blower, and string trimmer. I'd say follow your passion, as long as you can pay the bills.

A family member of mine was in the same predicament and just to make ends meet he started gardening, initially doing odd jobs here and there. Within the first year he built his business up and since then has never looked back.

That’s so nice to hear, I think by simply starting it can lead into a new life. I think I’m going to give it a go. See where it takes me, thank you for the comment 👍

I was made redundant in 2012. I think these big corporations should offer psychological and careers counselling as part of the redundancy package.
    Please follow your gut instinct!

Jobs are not our lives, yep they pay the rent , but take stock of what you want to do , what you need to do , because we need to survive at the end of the day , and we all have different circumstance , some married ,some with kids, some single .
So what ever decisions we do encompass these things , i know a guy ,he was a truck driver , got some cash together , moved into a camper van with his family tours europe.what im saying , we dont have to be entrapped in a certain lifestyle .
    🙌

If you enjoy the outdoors and your allotment and gardening then go for it. It doesn't cost a fortune to start up, small van, mower and strimmer and a few hand tools will see you on your way. It takes time to build it up but worth it. I think the most important advice is to put some money aside for winter months. You get a bit of work, some hedges etc to see you through but nothing like the rest of the year. I'm going fully electric with my equipment now. Less noise, maintenance, vibration. Only downside is the initial cost but for me its worth it. The brand I'm using is called Ego. There's lots of TH-cam channels for gardener's which are worth watching. Sorry for waffling but I say go for it, what's the worse that could happen. Be some great content for the channel as well, watching the journey from the beginning of the business. Hope all that makes some kind of sense

Thanks for the info! I did have a thought about going all eco if I was going to set up. For the reasons you mention it’s just all round cleaner for everyone. But can the batteries sustain a full days mowing? I presume you would need a few to keep you going all day?

@graemesmith77 the batteries will last quite a long while. I can get a few gardens done on one charge. They charge pretty quick as well, within an hour which is good for a lunch break 😃 The hedge trimmers last well on a charge too. The one that really eats them is a blower, about 20 minutes on a charge but that's a lot of blowing in one day. The equipment now is as powerful as a petrol machine but without all the smell and fuss.

Just do it. Go be a gardener, you seem like the kinda guy who can do anything he puts his mind to. If you dont give it a go you wont know the reality of it. 😊

I can totally relate to this I was bullied to go on the sick so I did first time in my life.I worked there 27yrs and could not go back for interview with Hr had panic attack and melt down so I resigned. I've lost my mojo for gardening too. New job interview I got to the final and they texted to say they give it to someone who wanted to change their shift.

If it was me I'd start looking now, get back into the work frame of mind, that way it'll be less of a shock to the system. If gardening is your thing, take a course on it, gives you a qualification, then, go self employed, however winter is quite a slow time for self employed gardeners.

As for anxiety, well done for opening up and sharing. It's so important, especially for men. If it hangs about too long, please seek support.

Hi Graeme, not sure how successful this would be but I've seen guys do things for free and put videos of there work online and made a fortune. For example they jump on a bike and clean the road signs that get filthy and neglected over the years. You could cut someone's grass with a go pro on and not charge them and then have the content so then your get a great video with a happy customer and also have a video to upload on your channel. It's nice to be nice kind of a thing.....
