Myopia: A Treatable Epidemic | Dr. Lance Kugler | TEDxOmaha

  • Glasses and contact lenses are prosthetics that cost us at a minimum $45K in our lifetime. With the exception of first responders, military and athletes, most of us choose to use prosthetics to correct our sight until those prosthetics fail us and we need cataract surgery. While surgery routinely corrects physical problems, and we clamor to get that corrective surgery, why do we ignore our sight? Why do we take the expensive lifetime option with annual tests, new prescriptions, risk of infection and injury, rather than the less expensive, more effective and efficient corrective surgery? Shouldn’t everyone, worldwide have the opportunity to be able to see without prosthetics? Dr Lance Kugler explores the real cost of eyesight, and makes the case for the global benefit, economic development, personal independence, career opportunities and life changing impact of reframing how we see sight, vision and our eyes. Dr. Lance Kugler, MD, is a specialist in vision correction surgery and CEO of Kugler Vision. A proud Omaha native, he is passionate about improving lives through clear vision. Dr. Kugler serves on several national boards, and his practice is recognized internationally as a center of excellence. Dr. Kugler is one of the original founders of the Refractive Surgery Alliance, an international organization comprised of over 300 of the world’s leading vision correction surgeons; he also served as its first president. Dr. Kugler is an associate professor of Refractive Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Truhlsen Eye Institute. He has been published in numerous medical journals, and participates in numerous clinical studies to advance the field of vision correction surgery. Typical improvement rate of about 1 dioptre per year. So for me it took 2 years to go from -2.00 to 20/20. I am helping other people do the same. Lots of info at my channel and in my course.

      4) swinging:

      diet to be taken:
Eat 1 carrot a day 🥕, take millets, spinach, nuts, beans.
If out door exercises are not possible at times keep continuing the indoor eye exercises.
🤓->😀 in 3 months to 1 year depending on how high your prescription is.
      My work:
Get Snellen charts for measuring sight up to -10 to -1. Also get Snellen charts for long sightedness measurement.
I did this Bates eye exercise for 3 months. I had -1 on both eyes. now I don't need glasses anymore. It worked for me. You should be consistent. Do not wear glasses when you don't need them. If you have a high prescription like -6 try to do this exercise once in the morning and once in the evening and as your sight reduces change your glasses.
You need to also practice active focus, you should not stare at computer screen too long, you have to take brakes and look at something for 1 min at more distance every 20 min.

Here is my story. Hope it helps and provides hope to many.
I had stable -1 myopia for over 23 years. End of Jan 2023 I had an episode of "Primary Iridocyclitis of Right Eye". Used steroids and dilation drops. These did not improve but worsened the condition. After three weeks I stopped medications and went to tropical island. Hiked a lot and did eye exercises along with being in the sun all day. After 6 weeks my right eye still was weak and I saw things about 20% smaller than the left eye with glasses. But surprisingly after 7 weeks my right eye got better than left eye. I think now my right eye is near 20/20 maybe -0.25. I stopped using glasses after 23 years. The left eye still seems to be -1. I'm trying to continue exercises and reduce that as well.
After seeing many articles about myopia from professionals who say it cannot be reversed I now feel like it can be reversed with a prolonged change in habits. Good luck everyone. Take care.

Can you share what all exercise did you do. I have high myopia and would like to take a step and follow steps if someone already has some result. Thank you so much for time and sharing your view. Its positive to hear this and motivating

    • @JV-tw6lt
      @JV-tw6lt ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@siddhishah8580 Hi there.. I followed the usual advice like 1. be in humidified places and hydrate eyes. 2. Choose large monitors with matte finish and less glare. 3. Spend time outdoors looking at things farther a few hours a week or 2 hours a day at least. 4. do some simple eye exercises that most videos show online. 5. Look away from screens after every 10 minutes and focus on things far away preferably in sunlight. 6. Reduce screen time as much as possible. Etc.
Long answer: I did some simple eye exercises. Focusing far and close and rotating eye making circles in all directions a few times a day. I made elliptical shapes in all directions like elliptical or circles from far and up close to my nose. I also looked at the bright sky allowing sun light to pass through at an angle (careful if in tropics where sun rays have high intensity). I think it is important to be in well humidified environments. I went to a tropical Island and did some strenuous hikes and stayed in sun all day for a week. It is better to live in tropical places if you can afford it. I live above the tropic of cancer. Where it is cold and dry for 5-6 months. So, I always have my humidifiers running now. I did not run them when I had the iridocyclitis event. I think it happened because of dryness and working long hours staring at a glossy screen all day. After stopping steroid drops, I used milk or half and half to hydrate my eyes. I microwaved a small amount and filled up the eye dropper and used all day and cleaned it after. Right now, I’m using a matte screen with large fonts, and I look at it from more than 3 ft distance.
Please avoid steroid drops. And avoid all medicines. Just focus on healthy habits and exercises. I’m sure it will at the very least keep the eyes from getting worse. Hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any specific questions. Cheers

Several questions and statements: I understand that we can somewhat slow the progression of myopia using various techniques. The many problems that many myopes suffer from is the elongation of the eye ball, not just being nearsighted. The length of the eyeball can contribute to cataract (even in young people, I'm in my early 30s with cataract), its also causes various degenerative conditions inside the eyeball. How will correcting our vision prevent cataract development as we age, decrease risk associated with elongated eye ball, such as risk of retinal detachment, or "fix" myopia? The message seems misleading.
This man seems as though he is it not a medical professional, more of a spokesman for the procedure he is speaking about.

This is late but basically, myopia occurs when the eye's lense is stuck in a contracted position, the more it contracts, the more the lense of the eye will protrude out. Think of it like squeezing a small water balloon. When we put in effort to fix myopia, the lense of the eye will start widening instead of contracting which will decrease the elongation. Hope that helps.

All big pharma solutions this. According to channels like Myopia is Mental, myopia can be fixed by exercises. Look in the distance and focus at your peripheral (while keeping eyes fixed), rest your eyes with palming, and you can recover eyesight according to them. Recovery happens because you need to learn how to relax the eyes again, your eyes are stressed and fixed at nearsightedness.

I have one good eye and one eye that's 1.5 nearsighted. But also in the morning my eyes are usually better (when looking at Snelle chart) then at the end of the day. Although I did see some promising progress now and again, thus far the exercises have not convincingly worked for me. My vision with in the one bad eye did not measurably improve on average. I do keep some faith though and will keep doing exercises when I think of them. Do note there is no scientific evidence these exercises can improve vision, but there is anecdotal evidence (also from one of my family members whose vision suddenly restored).

Lance totally ignores the serious consequences of Lasik for everyone.
      1) Most people do not get serious consequences, but when they do - they are terrible.
      2) After they get Lasik, a few develop secondary myopia. So, they are back into a minus lens - again.

I was laughing so hard at this. It's so American to just blatantly lie about these costs. It's really not that expensive to have glasses. I'm 28, had the same pair for 2 years now, they cost 150€ for me. Contact lenses, two pairs a year, 120€ in total. Lmao

I remember when I was a kid I tried on an old pair of my sister's glasses and wore them for about an hour until my eyes started killing me and when I took them off I experienced symptoms of myopia for the rest of the day. Fortunately my vision returned to normal the next day but looked at the kids wearing glasses at school and wondered how their glasses could affect them in any other way. I figured since their eyes were already ruined maybe it just maintained the level of ruin and helped them see through it? Yeah, that's it. Then when I was a Junior in high school I started going nearsighted. During the summer afterward I was active in sports, playing basketball and rode my skateboard to Randy Rhodes' grave and during my senior year I didn't have any problems at all. Then I took a job as a data entry clerk and within a few weeks the problem came back. When I got off work I'd look away for a while and my vision would slowly clear. About a year later I finally went to the eye doctor and was diagnosed with myopia (and astigmatism) and around the same time another guy at work began wearing glasses for nearsightedness as well. About a month later he took a job as a used car salesman and a few months later mentioned to me that his nearsightedness had disappeared. If I had only used my head then. I wore glasses for 8 years and saw my -.75D myopia turn into -3.75D myopia. Then one day I ran out of contact lenses while my glasses were broken and I just did without. It only took a few months before I was waking up with normal vision again and then I'd look close up and WHAM!!! There it was again. Out of curiosity I bought a pair of plus lenses and sure enough it cleared the problem right up but it didn't last, and then about a year later I went back to the eye doctor and the condition had improved by 1.25D.

So let me get this straight, was this guy compensated in any way for his testimonial about surgery that a large percentage of the population of American citizens can barely afford, let alone people in less developed countries who will NEVER be able to afford it. That and no surgical results can ever be guaranteed so you are looking at a medical procedure that at best has a 50/50 percent chance of success or failure. I am not saying everyone avoid it as it has worked for others but before you take this guy at his word, maybe you should talk to your trusted optometrist where you live first.

None of these technologies treat the shape of the eyeball, in fact they adjust the lens or cornea outside of its normal physiologic
range of refraction (similar to eyeglasses) so that any natural feedback loops that correct the shape of the eye will be out of whack,
and it is the shape of the eye that probably is what causes severe complications of myopia like glaucoma or retinal detachment.
In the future, most likely the sclera of the eye will be cut and remodelled to change the shape of the mishapen eye. This is more risky procedure, but is produces the physiologic result. There is also some evidence keeping eyes slightly out of focus (by increasing or decreasing distance causes the eye to shrink or elongate slightly and respectively) so such therapies if delicately performed over time perhaps by some AI algorithm and advanced autofocusing glasses, could do this naturally over years perhaps. Some antiholinergic meds and probalby unknown growth factor and inhibitors could accomplish this as well. More study should go into this than laser surgery, but the money is just not there in comparison, which is why research and progress in these areas lag. Capitalism does not encourage innovation often beyond small incremetal improvements and may inhibit it in the long run.

I'm severely myopic and a new prescription of glasses only last 5-7 months when they should last about 2-3 years. I can't have laser eye surgery cause it won't work on my prescription, I have astigmatism and a lazy eye, I was born like this it wasn't caused by a phone or computer it might help not looking at a screen 24 hours a day as it could lessen eye strain but myopia will always be there for people like me. You may be able to lessen the effects of myopia but there is no cure, eye surgery doesn't always work and can make your eyes worse, specific requirements must be met, glasses don't always work contacts don't either, the hospital are starting to routinely check my eyes for any other deformities and I'm 17.

    Listen to the first minute.
    It's real.
After that point this guy uses that first minute of truth to sell surgery as the answer to this massive problem.
This is just yet another way of twisting the sensitive story of your eyesight into someone elses hands.
Myopia is a life style choice.
I am not saying that you are completely in control of it.
Because when we are young we don't have a choice in a lot of the things we are expected to do and we are told is right.
At the exact same time our screen addiction starts before we can even talk properly and is even encouraged.
For the majority of us, at a crucial point in our development we are simply unable to kick the habit and it is simply too late for alot of the eye problems that have developed to be stopped or even slowed down.
I am not saying screens are the only cause.
You can't just stop going to school one day.
If you are not eating right or getting enough time outdoors, you might not even fix it until your 30.
    You might never fix it.
You are hurled into a routine that is unhealthy at a young age and the momentum is so strong that even if you tried to dig your heels in it would not work.
You might even like that routine.
You might even want to do those things.
And love it, and never want to stop.
Some people will always have eye sight problems.
Maybe even some perfect human being out there on a hill in the middle of no where has completely impaired vision and has never even seen a screen.
Hard to measure where the cause and answer to this problem starts and begins.
    All I can say is.
If you feel it you know.
But not everyone feels it until its too late.
But when its too late you will feel it.
So don't even do that stuff you never wanted to do but feel you have to day in day out.
Not even for a second longer.
If you feel like you have no choice and it feels wrong it probably is wrong.
Because there is probably a reason for it.
Even if it feels just so slightly wrong.
    If somethings not working.
    Whatever it is.
    Stop.
    Get up and leave.
Don't let things drag on even longer because there are so many things you can't chose anyway.
What if you haven't even realised the things you can and can't chose yet?
    You are not lazy.
Even the worst people in the world would help people out in their own time if they could.
But for alot of them, that time can never arrive.
Because their time on this planet runs out before it can ever happen.
    See these people.
You don't have to be like that.
If you are someone who wants to help the people around you but you just feel like its too much.
You are not a bad person.
    You can find the time.
and one day you'll make it all right.
But for now at least if nothing else.
Do what you need to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And don't feel bad about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We do not have all the answers and we may never know them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is something that every single health professional should spell out before they even start talking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But unfortunately they miss that crucial detail out.
And now your parents bought you glasses and took their advice.
How big is that big gaping hole in front of your eyes.
For me its been my entire life
But I found a way out.
    You can too.
Maybe you know more than these people
and maybe one day you'll make them see.
For me it was the cold.
    I had to feel it.
To blow those cobwebs away for good
Pills don't chill your head out

    Laser eye surgery has RISKS!
Also, the eye of a myopic person will keep elongating if full correction is used on close work (phone, books, computer) and when you do LASIK you get the correction lense scorched into your cornea!
Please don't do laser eye surgery before you read and learn about the very real risks.(yes, its a surgery. Calling it "vision correction" is misleading")

  • @Dom4z
    @Dom4z 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Myopia(nearsightness): Eye grows too long and becomes egg shaped. The light is wrongly refracted through your cornea to create a focus point within the eye infront of the retina. Because, the imagine is focused infront of the retina you have a blurry vision and can't see sharp objects far away.
    Real cause of development? Unknown.
Presumed cause? Genetics, lack of sunlight, bad diet, too much close up time with screens/books, bad light conditions, trauma, stress, eye dryeness, glasses, contact lenses
Industrial Treatment: Glasses, contact lenses, surgeries (highly advise against them, too many negative side effects that optometrist have no idea, training or education about before they send you to ophthalmologist that forwards you to laser technicians before the procedure to measure your eye the final time)
    Natural treatment: Unknown.
Speculative treatment via natural means: Less screen time, more time outside, being in humid weather to prevent eye dryeness, omega 3 for drye eye condition, vision therapy a.ka. active focus/defocus over prolonged period of time to strengthen ciliary body of muscles that controls the shape of your eye and the lens. (Some report 0.25 improvement over 3-6 months periods. Fake or not, nobody can give a definite answer). Most books on active focus are loads of bullsh*t made to sell people fake remedy and hope.
Hyperopia(farsightness): Unlike myopia, is caused by the eye being too short in length like a ball without enough air that is squeezed from the front inwards. As well as possibly the cornea being responsible for refracting the light within your eye as a focus point behind your retina. With a third cause being the contact lens within your eye becoming less elastic and soft with age and more hardened like ( a bit like contact lenses that when they dry become hard as plastic).
Real cause of development? Contact lens hardening in older people.

Overall, myopia is more like a genetical error where the eye continues to grow far outside the size it was supposed to be, because of an unknown mechanism in your body that should force thyroid hormones to stop being produced, which would stop the growth of the eye.
Meanwhile, hyperopia does also appear to be a genetical error that halts the production of hyroid hormones too early before the eye reaches the intended size. As well as possibly cornea and contact lenses being worn out with the age.
Hope some of the information helps someone. I'm not a doctor, but that is what is known so far. Eye health and medicine appears to be lagging behind the other sectors like technology. However, there are no studies actively being done on active focus/defocus for eye treatment, simply, because people do not find time to focus on themselves, despite vision therapy being a real medical field. Overall, it feels like everyone involved in the medical eye fields are more interested about profits than treatments. Because, treatments are sold in forms of prosthetics like glasses and contact lenses. Meanwhile, eye surgeries have too many negative side effects accommodating them that can make you into a permanent customer for life to any of the surgery clinics that will try to shake you off, because you've read and signed the waiver and you've agreed to all the possible side effects. And remember, the strongest pain receptors (nerves) are in your eyes, that have to be severed for laser surgery. Only some of those nerves regrow over a very long time (years not months). Be responsible, weight your options, before they become your poison. Because, there are too many snake oil sellers these days that try and sell you a cure from everything.

Little do we know, glasses are a crutch for the eye, the eye is a muscle. Wearing glasses help yes, but over time it weakens the muscle. There are exercises we can do and other treatments (I’m on TH-cam figuring it out so don’t ask me😅) we can do to improve our sight. I hope to figure this out and become a living testimony so I can help others.

Myopia is caused by doing things close up. Reading glasses moves things further away which addresses the cause.
The prescribed lens brings things in closer.
Then the optometrist recommends wearing these as much as possible so that you accommodate the prescription lens.
This is what causes the progression of worsening vision.
They compensate for the effect while increasing the cause.
"long eyeball" is the myth told by optometrists to distract the public from asking why the lens of the eye has accommodated a close range of focus.
That is caused by doing a lot of close work.
Wear reading glasses to prevent myopia.
Squinting is what naturally reduces the curve of the lens and gradually corrects the problem over time.
Prescription lenses are the quick fix that increases the problem.
Follow the money and you will see what the real problem is.
Good vision is natural. Great vision happens for free. Only bad vision costs money.

I have tried Bates eye exercise and it worked for me.
Eye Exercises to reverse Short sight
      Outdoor Eye exercise 👁️
Do these steps properly as mentioned below with out wearing glasses, daily morning between 7:30 to 8:30 AM when sun is not too strong.
      Out door exercises:
      1) shifting: 😉 👍-⛰️
(near to far and far to near = 1shift)
(Stay on near for 3 sec and on far for 3 sec and repeat)
      Only right eye 50 times
      Only left eye 50 times
      Both eyes 50 times
(Shift slowly, do not do rapid shifting)
      2) palming: 🙈🤲
Do palming for 5 min. (this is to relax your eye balls, While palming your palms should not touch your eye balls)
      3) solarization:☀️😑
Close your eye lids and face sun for 5 min and turn your head left and right to properly expose sun on your eye lids.
      4) swinging:
      Do swinging for 3 min
(While swinging do not focus your eyes any where and relax the eyes)
NOTE: Try to avoid glasses as much as possible from now on (IMP). Try to avoid staring at computer screen or anything at short distance for long time, if in front of computer give brakes every 20 minutes and look at something at Least 20 feet far for 1 min.
Keep your smart phone and laptop screen in blue light filter mode from 6PM to 6AM
      diet to be taken:

Optometrists and ophthalmologists do not make your eyesight worse (but if you have research from a scientific journal that you believe suggests otherwise, please share). There are now even myopia management strategies that optometrists can use to prevent your eyes from becoming more myopic which is fantastic.

@G E T R E K T That is correct, myopia is considered an epidemic. That is why there is so much research into myopia management. Research has shown that both genetics and your environment can affect myopia. For example, more time spent outside can reduce the severity of myopia. Myopia can lead to serious conditions later in life, so this is very important.

In order to prevent nearsightedness - One must use lowered prescriptions/plus lenses for nearwork by a technique called "print pushing", inducing "myopic defocus" (light focusing slightly below the retina, stimulating the ciliary muscles to relax and eventually eyeball shortening.
I highly suggest you all watch Todd Becker Myopia video, and Jake Steiner.
    - THESE ARE NOT EXERCISES, THESE ARE A CHANGE OF HABITS. (The bates method doesnt work or any other eye exercise).

I just had my eye checkup from the start! again! cause I lost my patient card. I hadn't been able to follow up for 2 yrs because of COVID . And now my prescription has increased to -5 tf...it was -4 before...but even before that it was -3.5 when i was 13... I'm 19 now
This is where it gets really confusing. My friend had -3.5 vision at first she wears glasses carelessly, always squints eyes using computer without using glasses, she rarely uses them and to my surprise she's reduced to -2...
Whereas me who wears glasses diligently my prescription goes up and up...btw i really wanna know if myopia people need to wear glasses while doing near vision jobs like reading, writing, phones etc. Because I'm starting to question my doctor's advice to wear them regularly.
Plus I'm from Nepal and the hospital he mentioned "Tilganga", I go there.
It had really good reputation and still has now...but especially for surgeries and operations...not that much for general checkups...
PLUS I'M THINKING OF DOING SURGERY BUT THE DOCTORS NEVER MENTION ABOUT SURGERY OR VISION CORRECTION? ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BRING THAT OURSELVES? CAN'T DOCTOR RECOMMEND THAT TO US?
I'm on verge of depression that my doctors don't tell me how i can restore my vision (probably to everyone) just hand me prescription and tell me to come after 6 months...then on that day tell me to wear same Prescription for next 6 Months and occasionally increase my prescription LMAO...please I'm not even 20! SEND HELP GOD I'm so worried that I'll have to wear those double cylindrical lenses for near and far in my 50s
So people with perfect vision. Live your life.. I'm so jealous of you. Don't suffer like us retinal dysfunction folks!

Look I’ve decreased my number, the thing is don’t wear glasses or contacts if you don’t need to. It makes sense that your friend who hardly wears them to have better eyesight. Eyeglasses don’t actually do anything for your eyes, it’s a temporary fix and honestly worsens your eye because you’re still doing bad habits.
So avoid using them whenever you can. Next is to eat leafy greens and vitamin A foods. You can legit google foods that help eyes and buy them. I eat eggs/berries/greens and have improved.
Another thing is to take 5 min break after each hour of screen time, it’s better to not use screens at all but obviously not possible in today’s era. Never stay up late in dark room, it’s harmful
Last thing is to exercise and wear sunglasses in the sun, they’re harmful to your eyes due to the ultraviolet rays, you should get all the nutrients you need from foods so eat healthy.

Modern medicine - all about treating the symptoms and not the underlying cause. There are many risks with any surgical intervention on the eyes. Given the prevalence of myopia now compared to 100 years ago, surely scientists can investigate the actual cause and the general population be given the choice to change their lifestyle to avoid vision problems. Unfortunately, that doesn't make money for the optometrists and ophthalmologists.
