- One Saturday night, in October, 1888, the journalist George Sims donned a cunning disguise and headed into the streets of Whitechapel with a determination to catch Jack the Ripper, and become the hero of the hour.
He published his experiences in an article that was published on the 21st of October.
In this video, we follow him as he takes through the "murder district" on that long ago Saturday night.
I wish more Victorian buildings and streets had been preserved.
Great stuff! I like the way George Sims' "heroic" plan was for Albert to do the physical work whilst he ran off for a policemen! ;)
He had a sharp and funny pen Mr Sims.
Thank you for the splendid narration of this excursion to the alleyways of Whitechapel Mr. Jones.
Thank you for your videos, Mr. Jones, which always add intrigue (and historical details) to the Jack the Ripper narrative!
Thanks Sir Richard, I find it fascinating to hear from journalist like George Sims. It gives you a look at the mindset of the public and hysteria that gripped all of London
I enjoyed hearing Mr. Sims writing skills. Thanks for sharing. 😊. Hello from South Carolina.
Another fascinating insight beyond the usual Jack the Ripper format. Thank you Richard for bringing these characters alive in their own words and allowing us to understand what London's Eastend was like in 1888. 10/10👍
This was a good episode! Fascinating to hear descriptions of Whitechapel from people who were actually there!
Wonderful, very well written.
Thanks Rich great Post again 👍
Really enjoy listening to the different aspects of this crime. That's what you do best . not just repeating everything endlessly thanks.
Sylvia to Albert Edward, “Hello sailor”
Great narration. Loved the video!
I would say that Mr Sims was braver than I am.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Time for another full length documentary Richard!
First! Superb narration as always
that explains why the last murder was indoors
Are you suggesting the killer propositioned prostitutes until he found one with her own place.
Thank you for this. It sounds like there was a real effort to catch Jack. And he must have known that. Wonderful narration and insight. Another great video 🍻
Awesome video as always! Kind of adds to the possibility that maybe it was a policeman. I mean they were everywhere at this point. Also, how did Jack cut them up with such precision in the dark? Who carried lanterns? The Police! Interesting to think about.
I wonder how many times Jack ventured out to kill only to run off home due to the swarms of police and amateur sleuths. They rec'd a lot of criticism but maybe a lot more would have been killed without them.
Excellent Richard, will watch tonight 👍
I think the stench from the streets and people would make us of 2024 gag.
You would be amazed what humans can tolerate, tune out, and get used to with time. Ask any mortician, pathologist or soldier who has fought long periods in trenches surrounded by decaying bodies and no proper toilet facilities.
Excellent stuff. A great new angle.
George Sims ran the first JTR tours. And I thought Rich was the first.
After hearing this I'm beginning to think "Jack" was in disguise...perhaps dressed as a policeman or even a woman...thanks for video, an amusing listen.
Thought the same myself
Inside job
A police man ?
Yes..seems very probable to me....a great way to interact with a potential victim...@markc3258
I recently watched Barlow and Watt investigate Jack the Ripper, near the end of episode 1 Barlow asks why did he leave it so long to attack Annie Chapman it must have been light he could of been seen maybe he wasn't bothered maybe he had an excuse for being there was expected to be there, unfortunately they left it there just wondered I assume other people have looked at the possibility of JTR being a policeman or someone similar just wondered what other people think about this?
I think it's possible the killer lived close to 29 Hanbury Street got the urge to kill about 3 in the morning but the earliest opportunity to strike was a couple of hours later with Annie Chapman
So many little turns of phrase that need to come back into fashion
Some horrible happening there every month then
If we send you a phone book, would you record it?
🎤... 😂
interesting, thanks. Sims clearly suffered some form of mental abberation
surprised they weren't accosted - ello, ello, what's all this then, who are you, where you going, right move along home then gents....bloody silly idea to set out to accost a murderer who was known to carry a knife !
Reporter wrote that both men were stopped by police on several occasions
