First time l visited my wife's family in Isaan they had a table with all the food laid out banquet style and I got stuck into the grilled chicken and rice and thought l'd try some of the paw paw salad with tomatoes which was actually Som Tum spicy salad. I ate a huge serving of it and I nearly died from the spiciness as they all laughed at the funny farang jumping up and down in respiratory agony. I still won't touch Som Tum to this day but our Thai/Aussie son (14) loves it. Culture shock! I will never forget that day!

The biggest culture shock some guys I know had was when they thought they was taking a girl back to their hotel/condo... but it wasn’t a girl...

    Well, sort of the opposite...
Having been over there a few times for increasingly longer durations I've found that I experience a sort of "culture shock" upon RE-ENTRY to my home country.
Certain things that initially seemed strange upon my first visit, now make SO much more sense than the way we do things back home...
...and I find myself going through the "stages" of (re)acceptance in coming BACK.

I agree on all fronts! Running in Thailand is hysterical! The reactions you get made me look forward to them.....Some bathrooms were definitely a shock! Women nonchalantly calling each other fat. Meat with bones in soup. Police check points. Motor bikes. A million more.....God I miss Thailand!

have had several culture shocks. My 1st was here in USA when I moved from NYC to Alaska.
Alaska is freezing in the winter and they actually have dry towns. Then the reverse happened
when I moved from Alaska to California and had to acclimate to California weather
The last is when an American goes to Europe and people actually stand in line for Bus or Metro
and the Famous ,"Stand on the right walk on the left"

  • @travelingmonkies1417
    @travelingmonkies1417 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My first trip out of Australia like most was Bali, I still to today find that was the most culture shock, The sounds of music, The smells of insense, the more in your face values to religion and lifestyle
I also found more people in Vietnam drank beer with ice it was weird not to have ice. Although still in Thailand do but just not as much.
I have found coming to Thailand alot easier to Adapt (excluding language barriers) and really enjoy learning the unusual for me cultural things that I have never thought of. Your feet have so many rules you have to learn more than just taking of your shoes when you come inside
Im finding your videos with subtitles a good learning experience. After studying Thai off and on for last couple years it is helping structure the language as I know 50% of the words in general conversation. Hopefully it will encourage me to get from Culture Shock level 2/3 to 4 :)
The thing that annoys me the most about being in Thailand. Is the annoying sounds in some of there tv shows. Sounds like from 70's/80's. A sound board of like 5 sounds on repeat. But really not all bad, I bought my girlfriend headphones haha...

As a Thai we rarely use the full name of the month. Like for January we usually refer to that as makara (มกรา) and leave out "khom"
Fun fact: month ends with khom has 31 days and ends with yon has 30 days.

When I was in Thailand for the first time, I had an issue with the squat toilets. It was always hit or miss when you went to the toilet; you either got a western-style flushing toilet or the SQUAT POT. It was always nice to be at a modern shopping center because you knew that they had western-style toilets.

I have lived in Thailand for 10 months so far :) These were mine:
    - Normality of referring to foreigners as “farang”. At first I found this rude, like why can’t everybody just call me my name? But now I’ve entered the “acceptance” phase 😂
    - Totally acceptable to call people fat
    - Eating all types of meats for breakfast at 7am
    - Every single TV show sounds like a 70s game show or is more cringey than home and away on a good day
    - Not a single fear of carbs 🤣

Thanks for this video. The 4 stages made me think first but I agree. Coming from Germany to Thailand is a huge shock, especially if you discover the Thailand which is not influenced by tourists. It's a challenge from time to time as people knowing how to talk English can be very rare. At least I can deal with some common daily routines although by skills are very poor. On of my big cultural shocks was traffic: First it seemed chaotic, extremely dangerous and more but after learning the unwritten rules, I feel very comfortable riding a bike or driving a car over there.

Interesting. The weirdest culture shock to me was how it wasn't that difficult to learn Thai. Now, I'm from Singapore where I know how to speak English, Malay and some decent Mandarin. The way we speak here, especially with the local accent and slang, kind of resembles the way the Thais talk. I've been told that my Thai pronunciation is actually very good for a non Thai. I can't read Thai to save my life but my spoken Thai is decent hahaha...

Nathan William no problems! Thanks for watching! It probably took me 6 months to start being able to have ok conversations! I used to live there for 9 months in 2014 and that was when I learnt! Now I just learn by making TH-cam vids! Thanks for being curious ✌️

I had dinner with a group of 3 locals in Bangkok. All texting constantly on their phones. I didn't want to be on my phone because for me as a European it feels rude while be on phone while having dinner together. So after a while they asked me if I don't have any friend because I'm not my phone. 🙈

    My culture shock. No.1
Learning about buddhism in NL I learned Buddha was a prince and a teacher of buddhism.
Visiting in Thailand, I actually met people who believe Buddha is their God.... 😱
And people who say, we know he isn't God but we call him God because he was the first of humans who reached enlightment...
    It really got me confused.
    And no.2
Nobody believing I was Thai myself because I do not speak Thai because I'm adopted by Dutch parents who didn't send me to Thai class. Having to explain I was adopted weird. I thought Thai people knew what being adopted mean. Wrong assumption 😅

The culture shock for me in Thailand is thier driving manners and motorbikes! Cars won't give way to u if don't press hard on the paddle and always 100% focus on the bikes as they come swaying on your way especially in traffic jams! Lastly Thai road markings is usually faded and blurry, gotta have good focus n brain power! Haha
