    It's so funny because I'm French and Thai and I can totally relate! I grew up and live in France so I'm more considered a "farang" but I understand Thai culture (and I speak fluently thai).
    The "have you eaten yet?" is to me like "how's it going?". It's also a way to show you that they're interested in you and your family. In France, we always say "how are you" as a greeting and we expect the other people to answer "good and you?" because it's like a rule and we don't really mean it. In Thailand it's different. If they ask this question to somebody they just met, it can be used as an icebreaker also.
    The "do you have a gf/bf?" question: I often get that one. It's usually a joke or a funny way to tell you that you're good looking. My aunt would, for example, ask this to my french friends I bring there, to joke around with them. If they reply she would continue the joke by saying that her daughter is single. Most of the time they would laugh after asking so if they ask this question really seriously it means that they're interested in you!
    "Where are you going" or "Where have you been?" to me it's a way to say hello or goodbye. Because in Thailand you only say hello to a person when you haven't seen that person for a long time or as a way to be polite (for example to a teacher). And goodbye when the person is going away for a long time. So when someone says "where have you been?" it's like "I'm glad you're back again" + "I care about you". And if a person says "where are you going" it's like "I noticed that you're leaving, so see you soon".
    "Have you gotten fatter?": it's food-related again. My grandma and my aunts would say this to me because I see them only once a year. But I'm thin as f*ck. It's just a way to tell you that you look like you're doing great because in Thailand (or maybe in Asia) if you eat well it means that you're healthy and you're in good shape. However, if they ask you "Have you gotten skinner" it means that you don't look as usual and they assume that you haven't been good lately that's why you haven't been eating well. It's sometimes a way to say that they care about you (when my Thai mom says this to me she would have a worried face haha).
    "And how's the weather in your country?" question I didn't get it at first but my Thai grandpa asks me this all the time and not only him. Now I know what it really means. Again it can be an icebreaker when you just met someone or when you haven't seen someone for a long time. But to me, it's more like a curious way to ask about someone's culture and not only about the weather. It's like the equivalent of "tell me about your country". I speak Thai and Lao fluently and to me, the word "farang" is really positive, so when there's a "farang" around, I noticed that the Thais would come around and be interested to know where he/she is from and they would want to know about their culture. But they don't want to be rude asking directly so they would first ask about the weather for example. Other times they can also ask about your job / your school etc.

    Up till now you seem to have aimed mainly at a Thai audience. But there are also plenty of foreigners with a strong interest in Thai language and culture,, so that could be a new way to go. As a foreigner, you are able to bridge the gap in a way that a Thai person would find harder to do.

    Ha ha! I lived & worked there for many years, always got the same 50, yes 50, questions. It can get a bit annoying if not used to it, but once they have fitted you into their mental picture, found someone / something in common, then you are accepted as part of their family. I have a Thai wife, so wherever we go, they always chat until they know someone or are related to someone who knows you, or are distantly related. If you understand & respect Thai culture & customs, you become an honoury Thai. 'Na bpen farang, teh jai ben khon Thai, krap.'

    True they ask this is India as well, weather because Asia is obsessed and curious about the western world, also personal questions because they think they are close to u and in some cases and in a lot cases people can be genuinely caring and help u out, western world is more sugar coated questions and conversations with mostly no genuine concern

    I just found your channel. Good stuff. I've never had the fat/skinny comment (so far...) but the others, you bet. I also get: "Do you like it here in Thailand?" and "Why do you come to Thailand?" all the time.

    LOL, good. In my experience, the most common conversation starter is : Pen ngai / Pen yang ngai bang / Ngai bang / Ngai + nickname --> How's it going? / How are you? (เป็นไง / เป็นยังไงบ้าง / ไงบ้าง / ไง..(ชื่อเล่น)..). And the most common answers are: Sabai dee สบายดี (very well) / Gor dee ก็ดี (quite well) / Ngun ngun งั้นๆ (so so).

    LOL hilarious and very true. I'm Thai and have lived in the US most of my life. I still find it weird when Thai people ask me if I have eaten. At least it's easier to answer than "How are you?" Like how much time do you have and do you really really wanna know?

    Whenever I speak to Thai people about my country they always ask about the prices of things and whether they're more or less expensive than in Thailand. Also how much money I earn. And they don't mean it in a rude way. It's a genuine question. I was so shocked I was asked that the first time 😅

    Hi Paddy
    I'm wanting to learn Thai especially whilst being locked up with this virus. What's the best way and quickest way to learn.

    • @ThaiTalkwithPaddy
      @ThaiTalkwithPaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mario & Bee hey 👋 for sure, right now is the perfect time! I would recommend starting with basic phrases through a TH-cam channel / website. (Tbh not too sure because I have never used but I’m sure there is plenty on TH-cam for basics). Make sure to learn in sentence form! I would also say to start having a go at learning the alphabet because it is easier to do in isolation and it will greatly improve your pronunciation. Sorry I can’t help more 😐

      Karl Torento hey! My tip is just to give it a go - it can’t hurt trying and if you enjoy it just keep doing it! Start by doing whatever feels natural to you and you can adjust as you grow and get better! Good luck ✌️
