Mooer GE250 vs Hotone Ampero: which one to buy?

  • In this video we will share a comparison between the Mooer GE 250 and the Hotone Ampero. Actually, I hope that this video will be useful for guitarists, who maybe are deciding to buy a new amp modeling and multi effects pedalboard, in the 400/450 bucks price range and are unsure which one to choose. Let me say that both the pedalboards are good options, but maybe one of them has that extra feature that better suite your needs…So, the arguments we will discuss together are: the technical differences between the two pedalboards, in terms for instance of in/out, sampling frequency and so on and so forth…Then we will better listen to the sound differences, that you are already hearing in the demo song…Finally I will give you my 2 cents. I hope you enjoy and please don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell...it would be of a great help!!!

    Had both, sold the GE250. Ampero´s amp modeling is on another level. It sounds more "amp" like, more open and organic. Trully a great small unit for its price. Leo, thanks for the amazing content, you really helped me decide between modellers.

      I haven't heard either in person, but that is what seems to be true watching the demos. This one made them seem pretty comparable, but in the individual reviews I've watched, the Ampero sounds more organic like you said.

    Leo, your reviews and comparisons are amazing. You have no idea how they help to make a conscious, informed choice ... Even more so here in Brazil, where import duties and taxes raise prices to surreal levels for the average wage of the population. As you said, the choice is subjective, and mine fell to Ampero due to the fact that it has 3 inputs: electric guitar, acoustic guitar and line (I could connect a bass, for example). In addition, here in Brazil it is 30 to 40% cheaper than the GE 250. Regarding the change of presets, I resolve with the addition of a Boss FS7 in the CTRL input. In addition, a big hug and congratulations on the excellent video.

    Hello everyone! Great video! It's just strange that no one speaks about how it works on stage. It is not very convenient to press on two pedals during the concert. And the softness of the sound is lost in the mix. From the experience of live performances, I can say the harder the sound, the clearer it is.

    Features of Mooer GE250 are awesome, and Ampero has sad missing things...like the spillover of the effects while changing bank.
    But talking about sound, Ampero sounds so good to me; better and better than Mooer.
    I am actually testing VStomp by Hotone, a plugin which should use the same Ampero amps, and I really feel that sound good under my fingers.
    So, even if Mooer has all those important features, I'm thinking about buying Ampero...
    I hope they'll show some important news at NAMM 2020.

      In fact, Vstomp's amp modeler is based on old Hotone Xtomp Amp algorithm, but Ampero's is brand new amp algorithm, so Ampero should sound better.

    The more and more I listen to these comparisons it has become obvious to me that the Ampero is aimed at home users to practice alone and the GE-250 is more aimed for band playing and jamming with others, just like the AxeFX, the Mooer has a more cutting mid heavy sound to punch through the mix, the Hotone could be harder to fit in a mix and still punch through. It seems that the GE-250 would be easier to work with, adding warmth is much easier than "demudding" a sound to cut through.

    Being myself a user of the GE200 since it's release date i can safely say that the preamps of the GE250 have no improvement really, exept for the power amp emulation, and for my ear at least, i think that the amp simulations of the Ampero are far better than the Mooers, Mooer preamps sound good, but too compressed, the Ampero has a more amp like sound to me. Still, i love what Mooer is doing and i want to get the GE250 just for the tone capture lol

    The only downside for Ampero is I felt Ampero had a lot repeated or similar effects, Mooer has more different effects, that's about it. About recording Ampero allows dual mono, one as clean, one with effects. It's also possible for you to assign patch up, and patch down for your footswitch, saving the need to use the double footswitch for bank up. Ampero also features some bass effects and amp, which is more suitable for me as both bassist and guitarist

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John, thank you for sharing your very interest point of you with us !!! Let me add my opinion....Ampero allows dual mono, but I want to be able to record the effects in a stereo track and the amp in another track and this is not possible: I would need at least 3 channels so that I can decide the amount of stereo effects while mixing. This is an important feature for me in order to use the unit as an audio interface, and it is not available in neither of the units. You are right about the bank up and down, but in this way you are loosing one footswitch for changing patches: the GE has one more footswitch (5 vs 4) and for me, it's a nice feature. As regards bass amp, I agree with you that it could be a nice feature if you are a bass player....please don't get me wrong...the Ampero is really a solid and good unit...I just think that the GE better suit my needs. Thank you once more for your interest in my channel!

    In terms of "Footswithes/Exp." I don't think the criteria was fair because the AMPERO comes with an additional pedal with two foots which makes the number of available foots higher than the number of foots of the GE-250.
    So the feature score would be tied at 8x7 vs 8x7. Respectfully!

    Thank you for this video...all your videos (and your playing) are excellent. I originally was pretty sold on an Ampero...but, the bank switching capabilities, as you say, are very important in a live situation...no one wants to be doing a pedal dance while performing. The Ampero overdrive sounds seem a little warmer, but this could probably be adjusted. The clean sounds in the Mooer were better. I have a Hotone Xtomp Mini and a Mooer A7 on my current board, so am familiar with the quality of these companies' products. Overall, I agree with you, the Mooer GE250 is a better choice overall...for me at least. Best.

      Hi, unfortunately I don't have a GE 200 for a direct sound comparison, but just considering the tech spec, the GE 250 is better than the GE 200. For instance it has a dynamic of 100db against 98, 2048 IRs sampling points against 512. In my opinion the GE 250 is a nice unit for the price.

    I had the Ampero, issues with first release aside, I really liked it. The feature that would get me to pay more for the GE250 is the ability to 4 cable the amp/effects loop. Before this, you had to get more flagship units to do this. While I can get used units that do this, they are bigger, heavier, and do not have the drum machine. If you do not feel like the 4 cable method is at all important, the Ampero sounds great. But another thing, the trying to push 2 buttons to patch up or down is not easy, especially with big shoes, even though the 250 has little buttons in line, I see that being easier. So for home use only, it's a toss up, but for any live setting, the 250 would be my choice. I sold my Ampero because of the lack of 4 cable setup. Even the Mooer Black Truck has that ability.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for your message and for sharing your opinion...I agree with you...I think that the fx loop and so the 4 cable method is an important plus of the GE 250 like the two dedicated switches for banking up and down.

    • @vondragonnoggin
      @vondragonnoggin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ctgblue - I have the Ampero and just changed the behavior of the switches so if you hold a switch it changes banks rather than use two switches at the same time for bank change. I found hitting two switches at the same time awkward also but the Ampero easily lets you change to using single button for bank changes. It’s the same amount of time to get to the tuner as to change a bank. Mine is set for button A hold will bank up and button B hold will bank down and then button C hold is still the tuner. I’ve paired my Ampero with a Two Notes Torpedo CAB M though and it greatly improved the sound. The Torpedo CAB M has power amp modeling, eq, reverb, and loads IR’s also allowing mixing of cab IR’s and choice of 8 different mics. Power amp modeling gives choice of KT88, 6L6GC, EL34, or EL84 power amp simulation. Just wish the Ampero had an fx loop, but other than that I like it a lot once I added the Torpedo with it. It added the body and better feel to playing I felt the Ampero missed by itself.

    Dear Leo, you considered the trouble pushing two buttons at the time to switch between patch while performing part of the final choice you made. I need to inform you that this procedure for switching patches can be changed..for example by holding one switch which will make patches change. This can be done by changing the button settings.

    Extra late, but trying to decide between these two. Hardware wise I'd go with the mooer, but the sound is better in my opinion on the hotone. In all the reviews I've watched, the mooer always sound closed/dark, and your comparison makes this characteristic to pop up. How would you try to get brighter/more open sounds with the mooer?

    Hi Leo. What are your opinions "feel wise" and dynamic wise? Ampero sounds more organic to me. But I really like GE 250's tone capture feature. Do you think some tweaking or adding some eq would make GE 250 a little bit more organic? I still can't decide between them. I'm gonna use it for recording purposes mostly.

      They are both good option. The main difference in my opinion is the live use, I mean for live use I wouldn't go with an audio interface and a computer, as they are less "comfortable" and they maybe less reliable than an amp modelling pedalboard that is all in one and dedicated to the guitar.

    On the MOOER GE200 there is a great feature where there's a dedicated CTRL Button function to kick in multiple effects blocks instantly and you hit it again to go back to the original patch sound.
    Have they done away with that on the GE250 or is it done some other way as I don't see a CTRL footswitch as such ?

      Hi Philip, it's an hard question to answer. Let me try to give you my considerations: for me, in any live or gigging contest, the extra footswitch of the GE makes the difference. Another thing to take into consideration is that the Ampero does not allows the 4 cable method, that is available in the GE (as far as I know), therefore if you had to use the unit with your amp in the effect loop, this could be killer feature to be considered. I have the 🔥 Hotone Ampero but the Mooer GE250 does more.
    It cost about a $150 more as well.
    If you are playing mostly metal get the Mooer GE250!
    Believe or not I 'm play mostly Jazz, Gospel, Funk, and Fusion.
    I have lightweight but high wattage rig because I like presence and a lot of Headroom.
    I have a Hofner Jazzica Custom, 1978 Gibson ES335TD, Washburn Solid body 🎸
    I use a Hotone Ampero powered by 2 -100 watt Harley Benton pedal sized Power Amps and 2 custom made 8 ohm G112 cabs with 2 Eminence n12 Neodymium 250 watt speakers which are neutral and flat sounding.
    🎛🔈🔊
    This rig is 45 pounds lighter than my previous rig.
    Rivera Knucklehead 100 watt Tube head with 2 Electro-Voice EVM12L 300 watt speakers. HEAVY!
    The Mooer GE250 and the Hotone Ampero sound the same but switching channels on the GE250 is
    easier and has a more intuitive interface etc
    I bought the Hotone Ampero before I heard and saw this video and other demos of the Mooer GE250.
    Eventually I 'm going to get the ISP Michael Sweet Theta Pro.
    The. Ampero and GE250 are budget Helix, Kemper, Fractal, Headrush, & Mooer GE300 $1000 and more.

      I know this comment is a year old, but I actually just replaced my POD Go with an Ampero. Pod Go doesn't have: MIDI In, XLR outs, touch screen or drum patterns. Additionally, POD makes you assign a looper to a patch block in order to use one, whereas the Ampero's looper is 'universal'. In my opinion, the only advantage POD Go has over Ampero is the number of footswitches on the unit. Ampero's tones are easily comparable to POD's - in some cases, superior - and you get some great amp models in the Ampero (Mesa MkII C+!) that are strangely missing from POD.

    I think Mooer did a terrible job on the GE250 expression pedal. First off it's not an FX block so you can decide where in the chain you want to place it. And you can't unassign it from any FX function which you don't need to use. Volume swells don't work because of the weird way they've set up the volume pedal. I pray they release a firmware update to address this...

    • @SuilujChannel
      @SuilujChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you do not understand how to work with the expression pedal. It is not an effect but a control which you can assign to knobs...

    • @SuilujChannel
      @SuilujChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@n1tr0sys09 yes! The merge function is the best thing! I will use it to change multiple delay parameters on the fly. ;)

    • @dornyoh
      @dornyoh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuilujChannel consider the GE300's expression pedal. You can assign it as a volume block and change where it is in the signal chain. Of course I do know how expression pedals are supposed to function. I've been a boss user all my life and I spend most of my time toying with effects so I know what I'm talking about.

    I can compare the GE 250 to the Headrush Gigboard. No chance for the GE 250. The Headrush sounds a lot more dynamic and naturell.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, first of all thank you for your message! Unfortunately, I don't have the Headrush...obviously, it's a very interesting machine...and a video comparison with the GE 250 could be interesting...my only concern is that the Headrush price is 100€ more than the GE 250, so I'm not sure it's a fair comparison. What's your opinion? Thank you once more for sharing your opinion on my channel!

  • @olymoon2008

    Buy none. I have the Ampero, Hotone don't give any support to their users. No preset manager to organize them.
    If you want to put your presets in different order, you have to save them all one by one, and reload them one by one in your desired order... In 2023... And Mooer have the exact same problem.

    • @olymoon2008
      @olymoon2008 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitdevice thank you for the info, but, can you insert a preset in the pedal between 2 others?

    • @bitdevice
      @bitdevice ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@olymoon2008 No you can only overwrite. You would have to move all presets after to make a free slot. I see your point here.

    • @olymoon2008
      @olymoon2008 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitdevice That's exactly the same problem with the Ampero. In 2022 this sort of thing should never happen. There are 70 user presets slots, so if you want to reorganize them, you have to save them all one by one, and reload them one by one in your desired order... Stupid way of doing things, specially while all other brands like Boss. Roland etc... Allow to insert presets.
