    Listen, these woman had to embrace the ONLY things they had that gave them power..... and that was their sexuality (not necessarily sex). I think Catherine was intelligent and cunning. She figured out what she needed to do to secure her life, as well as the life of her children's, with a husband that treated her poorly and a treacherous court and she did it. You can either become a victim or figure out how to play chess and that's what she did. The Serpent Queen is making me want to watch Reign again. I love her portrayal and the actress that played her was fantastic. I realize it's not historically accurate but I enjoy it. Thank you for your videos. I just found your channel this evening. I'll keep watching!

      I don’t know how Catherine was labeled as the Serpent Queen for this series. I don’t have access to this series but I did see episode one as it was free. I enjoyed Catherine’s character in Reign. She certainly kept the story alive. She was a survivor.

      I loved her in Reign. I wish we had seen this part of history in tbe series, even if it was hinted at only briefly.

    This is the most Interesting aspect of Catherine de Medici I’ve heard. Thank you for this! I felt she was So Much More than how she’s typically depicted. Her Intuition is more than Impressive & she lived in a time where she could be either Predator or Prey. I’m so glad that the Serpent Queen Series has sparked more pieces on the History of this unique time. 😊
    I’ve read Deloris Cannon’s book on conversations with Nostradamus & he says in that book that Catherine de Medici was the only woman worth talking to & working with. Yes, that is a misogynistic comment for our modern times… but a huge compliment to her strength and intelligence of that time.

      True, but there's power plays involved in it all. That's how exercise power over others. Through their weaknesses and vices. If all have them, can't betray each other.

    Catherine was more considered a "lower class" than a "foreigner"... everyone was a foreign at the time. But being "lower class", which the Medicis were viewed as, (because they dealt with money, a "devilish" trade of it's own) was looked upon as vulgar, including all of the Medici's Popes.... hence they had to produce a substantial dowry in addition to a bride

      Yes royals believed in marrying other royals or other blue bloods. They took so serious to marry their cousins.

    • @Dr.Yalex.
      @Dr.Yalex. ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sassytheory Indeed. The practice of "blue blood" is older than religion. The origin of the term "blue Blood" is Osiris (the sun) who was the brother/husband of Isis (the moon) and fatheruncle to Horus (Jesus)...ancient Egyptian papers reads, as per Deodorus "and together they created life, Hor" hence the original story adopted by Christianity.
      Now, most if not all nobility through history was plagued by incest.
      What was your point?

    • @CourtneySchwartz
      @CourtneySchwartz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re trying to keep power and wealth in the family, incest and tax shelters seem historically inevitable.

    They had good lives given to them in her service, even if pregnancy as a result of her espionage and loyalty serving their queen. Catherine of Medici was very wealthy, acquired more through increased power, and very generous. .

    Not too surprised first, she was not the first he used women in this way, but she was the most effective, if you wanna look at it that way, because others had to use them selves to get what they want for example, when you consider that Henry the eighth’s grandmama was left at the age of 13 asking very difficult for you didn’t even have a C-section. It’s a miracle she survived and she had to give her son up her newborn son flee from the castle of her husband because her husband supposed relative and it was supposed to be as thick as thieves as the saying goes, was then killed by the person he gave his loyalty to not surprisingly that she didn’t had to find a new husband like I said, she’s 13 years old. She had to find a new husband somebody powerful and wealthy. Well, let’s just say, there are very few women of that time that we know a lot about the only reason we know about her is unlike the average woman of that time. She was a survivor same with medicine, Medichini I don’t know how to pronounce your name. I’m sorry I’m using voice to text and I’ve never been sure how really you pronounce her name. I’m not surprised under the circumstances back then they had treated her really bad. Her husband didn’t even go to bed with her from my understanding is it until she pretty much begged his father what I am surprised about is that she didn’t then use his mistress in her flying squadron, like the Collett, the teacher of the squadron, or whatever you wanna call it, but then again, that probably would not have been mentioned, because of the fact that it would imply that she did what she did premeditated and people don’t like to fuck them. They didn’t like the same things out right mostly because you never knew who was listening but she learned very early on when they were going to send her back in disgrace if she was going to survive any for sons were going to survive before she was gonna retain power well, etc. but she had gotten Preston to. She was going to have to come up with a plan to make sure that she wouldn’t be removed so I’m not surprised and chose that she was not naïve or stupid unlike many others

      @@fabulouswomeninhistory thank you for your comment. I’m not sure how much of voice to text was correct my eyesight’s not too good and I really couldn’t keep trying to fix things when I started so I hope that makes sense. I can never be sure but yeah she’s an interesting character when you think about it, but she’s more in a way Ironwheel women had to be, that should be iron. Will not iron wheel but I can’t fix it right now. I’m trying to write this and I can barely see it. It’s a bad day for me. I’m thinking of all the women around that time and the truth is if they didn’t want to end up like what happened to her great I think it’s a great granddaughter. Great grandson I don’t remember basically if she didn’t if if you were a woman, if you did not want to end up like lady Jane grey with your head on the chopping block or worse and yes, there was worse your only choices were to take control of the situation, plot and plan. If you’ve got the time and most of them did that the smart ones, Henry the eighth‘s grandmama, she was 13 years old when she had him or 12 years old I forget which, and she had to plan fast because she knew that it was literally a matter of time. Maybe ours may be days before they would come there and they would even kill the babe, so she had to plot and plan, and that’s what she did and in the end her son became king of England, and the man who had caused her, both her brother-in-law and her husband’s death was killed. Innoway, the sad part of the story is that because of how young she was, and it was not uncommon at all, in fact, this happens a lot in Africa where they used to marry girls off as young as 11 and 12 so it wasn’t uncommon for women young women who were married off at such a tender age that they became literally sterile from bad births. There’s no other way, and I don’t have words to describe it, the fact that she survived it and they didn’t have service cesarean section back then is this she must’ve realized just how much of a miracle it was that she survived it. She must’ve also realize that she probably would not be able to have any more children even if she had wanted I’m pretty sure with her third husband who was her shield and she was like an oak tree to her I mean he literally was the person who at every turn helped her and he knew what she was about. It was quite plain in fact he tried to treat her own son like it he was his, knowing full well he wasn’t I mean there’s quite a bit of an age difference were talking about by the time he became her husband most husbands back then if the wife could not provide an air And they didn’t have one. They usually put the wife aside but he loved her and he loved her very very much and it’s quite obvious but yeah, she literally planned everything like it was a war and you either win or you lose that’s what these women had to find out. The fact is Katherine, the dish Medici was married at 14 years of age she was treated, but like crap by her own husband, they were going to throw her back to her family and that alone would have put her in this Grace she would not have been able to To find a new husband and more than likely, she probably would have been relegated either to going to a notary or I should say Nunnery not notary. I don’t know why it changed the words but yeah, she had to plot and she had to plan, and there was no other choice in her case, and as we know, she succeeded ironically enough as much as she hated her rival and she did get her revenge in the way that she took back the crown jewels and she did take back the fancy house that she herself wanted. She did not do what others might have done in her position Catherine did not have her killed, and she could have very easily, and I think the reason she didn’t is as much as she disliked her because of her hold on the king. She did enable her to succeed in having four children unless I’m mistaken I believe it was three sons and a daughter she would never have been able to become even the regent to her son had she not learned from her rival and that may explain a lot about why she didn’t have her killed.

    Catherine's power - ok, fun story... my wife and I were debating this exact point, but the context had a twist. We were visiting St. Denis Basilica in Paris and were shocked to note that almost all of French Royalty and several infamous figures were interred there... look at the list, it is truly astounding so many are in a single out of the way Basilica (easily missed). We concluded that the world would be royally screwed if this was where the zombie apocalypse started!!!! It would not be long before Catherine was running the zombie apocalypse lol So if all these past rulers came back, who would shake the world the most!?!?!!? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Burials_at_the_Basilica_of_Saint-Denis
