  • The real life history of Catherine de' Medici, The Serpent Queen on Starz. The historical drama is sure to cover all the intrigue and betrayals of the French court in the 1500's but if you want to know the real history , watch this - Part 2 of 2 parts.
Catch Part 1: The Serpent Queen (Starz) - The TRUE History Of The Life Of Catherine de' Medici ► • The Serpent Queen Par...
For most of the first 40 years of her life, Catherine de' Medici, The Serpent Queen found her life directed by others, and once she was able to establish her own place and personal power, she fought to maintain it.
Although this description of her life may not be as intriguing as 'occultist' or 'Machiavellian schemer', it would seem to be more accurate and fitting better one of the greatest queens of France.
In the Starz historical drama called, The Serpent Queen, Catherine de' Medici, you are sure to find lots of royal intrigue and machinations and murder.
    00:00 - Intro
00:51 - Henry II of France dies, King Francis II becomes King
03:05 - Charles IX becomes King of France
    04:55 - The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre
10:12 - Henry III of France comes to power
11:21 - Henry of Navarre becomes Henry IV of France
Catherine's association with the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre has largely defined her legacy and given rise to such names as The Dark Queen, The Serpent Queen, The Witch Queen and more. History says that she engaged in constant scheming and intrigue, which the massacre is only the most notable example of.
Actually, though, her 'intrigues' were no more nefarious than any other monarch of the time and were more or less thrust upon her by circumstances as she did her best to manage in the interests of her sons, herself, and of France.
    Thanks for watching!

Thank you very much for a balanced, well-researched video. Catherine de' Medici was known as 'the Peacemaker' in France for 20 years! She tried *very* hard to unify the religious factions which nearly destroyed France, always with the purpose of protecting both her children and the French crown. Huguenots *and* Roman Catholics were intractable foes, so Catherine's attempts to maintain peace were ruined. Again, thank you for your insightful video.

And thank you for your comments. Yes, she has not been appreciated for just how astute a leader she was. History has much aligned her. Again, thank you for noting this.

Thank you for your story of Cathrine DeMedici, both parts! I am new and subscribed. I also am watching the Serpent Queen but have the sense to know it is dramatized of course, so it is wonderful to learn as I watch the movie. It helps me somewhat. Lol
Cathibe reminds me of Empress Wu Zietian, do you have a video on her? It's hard for me to find much on her and being tech illiterate, I sadly rely on these videos.
Thank you for doing all you do to teach us, those like me who can't research deep enough for the true info but want to learn. God Bless and looking forward to going thru your Playlist. 🤗

She was fierce and only played the male game of the crown better and that terrified the men of class then so she had more downstairs than any man she ever came into contact with and they way they treated her in death shows how she was more of a warrior than the men she governed and yes she turned heads every day because she took what was hers and ran with it
When you want something so badly you will do whatever it takes to get it and keep it

I don't think she was that bad lol. She did what she had to do to survive, have kids, have them survive , keep the power & etc. Because people at that time were a straight struggle. A group of people with no morals, no trust, didn't care about women and etc. She did her best and didn't want more because she never wanted the crown till she fell in love and had kids. She did what she had to do and men straight made her to be evil and survivalist. They just jealous they got out witted. So many historical women figure in doing better or worst for society yet some of society are so ungrateful to them and till now smh. She just had the balls to do something about it

Also have to look into the history of The Medicis in Italy. They were as if also founders of an important monetary policy. (Merchants that became a type of important and powerful Italian nobility, without really being considered to be), but also through very important amounts of property ownerships, that were with noble titles to them, and also including in the Catholic Church abilities to be Pope. Properties that had been nobles strongholds. That's why in the series she refers to herself as a "commoner" that goes so far as to be queen of France, of course through a royal marriage where her husband's family, wanted her enormously powerful dowry, especially in lands and gold. I think that her parents were just a younger couple in love, but carried everything with them of whom they were and what had, that was so hated and despised, obviously including because of how all and from whom all it was all acquired, it led to their premature deaths. The only way to save her, their heir, was hiding her in a convent with nuns, until a marriage was arranged by her Pope uncle.

Your opening statement about the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana is so untrue. Yes, Charles spoke frequently to Camila on the phone but there was no affair. Diana was the first of the two to have an affair which Charles learned about from the late Queen. It was only afterwards that his relationship with Camila became more intense. So you can say Diana's behavior drove Charles into the arms of Camila. Diana liked playing the victim because it gave her something to hold over the Royal Family. Just like her youngest son is doing now.

The series is ridiculous. Why these writers cannot manage to stick to the truth, follow basic rules of modern portrayals of historic events, is a mystery. Especially when the truth is just as interesting. The Tudors, The Spanish Princess and the White Princess are all factual disasters. Disclaimers should be posted at each episodes beginning so that kids studying history now and later, don’t get it all wrong.
Example being, Mary Stuart made the Scottish nobles and her half brother aware of her return before she arrived. She did request safe passage from Elizabeth who denied the request. Styling herself as Mary, Queen of France, Scotland and England will annoy the royal ass seated on the English throne. Also, Mary was not a religious zealot, no more so than the other Catholic monarchs fresh out of the Inquisition..

The Starz drama neuters every male character, underdeveloped them for the sake of developing the females (by the way the female characters are very nicely built and robust, that's a good thing.) But by underdeveloping the male you somehow devalue the ingenuity of the female. Thank you.

    • @fabulouswomeninhistory
      @fabulouswomeninhistory  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yet for centuries, women have been represented as "underdeveloped" as you say. Not just in media but in real life and in history, academic and otherwise. I don't agree with your point, I am afraid. But thanks for joining the conversation.
