Catherine De Medici - The Black Legend

  • Catherine De Medici - The Black Legend: Catherine de' Medici was born in Florence on 13 April 1519 and died in Blois at 5 January 1589. As wife of Henri II Of France, she was Queen Consort of France from 1547 to 1559.
Catherine’s name is linked to the religious wars that were fought in France during the years of her reign.
An evil aura shrouded her figure in French historiography up to the end of the 19th century: Catherine is said to have been cold, jealous, vindictive, greedy for power and ready to do anything to achieve her ends.
However, contemporary historians agree that Catherine de' Medici was one of the greatest sovereigns of France. Although she was not without fault, she attempted to implement a policy of reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants, motivated primarily by a desire to ensure the perpetuity of the Valois dynasty.
Her role in the Saint Bartholomew's night massacre, however, still contributes to making her a controversial figure today.

@@TheKingsofFrance I used to believe the official version but now, after watching several videos, including yours, I think she was horribly mistreated by History in general.
One thing I do believe is that she was utterly worried, almost obsessed with the end of the Valois dynasty... her sons lacking heirs caused the Valois Dynasty to go extinct and she feared that more than anything.
I do believe she may have prayed a lot for an heir... but I don't believe she practiced witchcraft with dead newborn babies

In her defense, her children did a lot of foolish things to sabotage her. The only one who behaved himself was Francois, and that was only because he died when he was still only fifteen. 🤔

Also in her defense, she was hemmed in by men all around who severely stomped all over her at every opportunity because she was a "shopkeepers daughter", completely ignoring who Lorenzi Il Magnifico was. I would point out that she apparently never took any revenge on those who slighted her, which directly contradicts the picture painted of her. Italian women were all tarred with the same brush, regardless of how they actually acted.

I have always been intrigued by the intelligent, fascinating Catherine. While not a saint-and which prince at that time could afford to be-she has been much maligned. As mentioned, rumours of poison started early for her! And having to navigate a dangerous path between her enemies the Guise family and the Protestants must have taken a lot of skill and courage. Queen Catherine did what she had to do for the sake of continuing the Valois bloodline, but the monarchy had long been in decline even before her arrival. It's unfortunate that her life was wasted on those who did not fully appreciate her sacrifices, insights, and talents; but she did bring with her many cultural traditions that still survive today in France. Her contributions are many, and she had exquisite taste in fashion, architecture, and horticulture. Her gardens at Chenonceau are my favorite by far, and the Tuileries Palace was probably one of the great marvels in Europe before its condition became derelict. She was a very learned woman, especially in the "secret sciences" of the day, and that's where the rumors start.

I named him Françoise Etienne de le Frits 🤣 I recognize French Fries aren't actually of French origin, however, I thought it was clever, and funny lol.
Now to comment on the actual video, Catherine was definitely an interesting, and intriguing personage. But isn't that why we LOVE French History? It's lively, and full of really interesting, as well as colorful people. My two favorite French figures are Gen. Alex Dumas, and Philippe le Duc d'Orleans, the Grand Pere of Europe. I feel like Philippe would have been a better King than his brother, le Roi Louis Quatorze. The French Court probably wouldn't have had to relocate to Versailles lol, as Philippe preferred living in the comforts of Paris.

I've played a bit of D&D when I was a kid, and I've also played (a lot) of WoW which is obviously based on D&D... and nope french fries originate from Belgium (allow me to show you a bit of my chauvinistic side). Although the court wouldn't have had to move to versailles most likely, there's not telling imo what Philippe would've been like as king. He'd have had received a completely different education and it would've been pumped into him from birth that he was king... No telling how that kind of an education would've influenced him...

1 What would Catherine be in Italian? Caterina, Catalina, or something else?

      1) In Italian it would've been Caterina I believe.
