Sonic Academy rework Fatboy Slim's 'Gangster Trippin' using Ableton Live 8.
All of the samples used are from the original tracks as sampled by Norman Cook (or as close as possible anyway!)
Hope you enjoy it and please share it if you like it

Now y'all gotta remember that Norman Cook did this all with an Atari ST and several dated Akai samplers....!
S900s and s950s - fat boys weapon of choice
djmips half of the EQ and distortion/saturators etc used in this video are just to get that sound! You can see his studio in videos and he doesn't have anything too fancy in terms of effects units.
@Snolan1990 Yeah, they're basically there to recreate bit reduction
Now ya’ll gotta remember that Norman cook was in an 80’s band called The House Martins before all this “funky beatz” bs lol
Can some body link Me dj shadow's first sample that is used in the first part?
Трэку уже почти 30 лет, а звучит он так же свежо, как и в конце 1990-х
spot on, just like the Jim Pavloff videos remaking the prodigy :)
thanks Sonic academy!!!
Brilliant tutorial. So many Samples being used in this track, I never noticed. It's also quite inspirational. Cheers.
That is truly amazing! I was just watching that in disbelief!!
Very great job, guys!
I love these videos!
Great job, guys!
I'm impressed, well done
This is Awesome man!
brilliant job!
loved it!!!!! was wondering how alot of this was pulled off
this is real crazy, thanks a lot!
Great work !!
Well done!
Come on, we gotta get that gangsta shit!
Some things sound a bit weird or just a bit off. I liked it in general. This kind of stuff is extremely time consuming. Nice work.
Sweet job guys
Aww you ended the video before you got to the best bit - that squeaky "Ugh-UH!" up-beat part!
best tut yet@!
Good job!
kickass
Круто. Вдохновляюще!
Awesome :D
Exactly! Nice job BTW
LOL that “shoot your shot” sample everybody was confusing for Price screaming back in the 90’s but I always thought it sounded more like a horn
Whos price?
dope.
Please show us how to remake Vapourspace's 'Gravitational Arch of 10' in Ableton Live, and then how to use a sample of it in a remake of Fatboy's Slim 'Next to Nothing'.
impressive
@KumpdeeDumpdee I think you're missing the point. This gives people a real insight into how a sample based track is put together. Rather than attempt to recreate it I think the intention is to show people how to create their own using these techniques... at least that's what I got from watching it.
And this is why Norman much prefers working with his Atari and external samplers; the groove has been completely quantized out of this just by working in Ableton. I'm an Ableton user myself, but I can see now why he doesn't rate working with a DAW as much.
Burial says the same thing, when you quantize too much you loose "humanity".
Part of the issue will be that the samples are snipped more accurately in this video than on an Akai S950 so you lose that natural swing.
"Dig that gangster shit, c'mon you gotta dig that gangster shit, c'mon you gotta..."
VectorOmega I thought it was kick that gangsta shit.
@simonth2 Big up, Simon!!
What kind of programs and outboard equipment would have been used in 1998? I imagine you do this only using samplers, sequencers, outboard effects, turntables, tapes &/or CD players with little reliance on a standard computer.
@simonth2 I can't seem to find of your tutorial videos out there...
This makes it look easy...Amazing to think he would of made this with an Atari ST, some Akai S1000s, a 909 and a bit of outboard gear. Would of been a right arse to make!
The setting up of the samples in the Akais would have been more time consuming but the sequencing would have been similar to Ableton. Still amazing talent.
@simonth2 very impressive. you obviously know your shit :-) I'm envious
I could never find the name of the sample that comes after where your remake ends. I has like a reggae type bassline.
Tommy cooks reggae meringue
Is there a video like this but for “Praise You” cuz I remember seeing one but I can’t find it.
Yes: th-cam.com/video/dffc5B1JSR4/w-d-xo.html
@simonth2 care to share how you made it?
вся моя жизнь обман
That squeaky sax sample actually comes from "Barkin' Up the Wrong Tree" by James Young & the House Wreckers, not "Shoot Your Shot".

I'm learning a lot from these videos!! Though I don't quite understand what happens with copyright when deciding to use samples like this? Is it no longer the legal minefield it used to be? Did Norman Cook get permission or pay royalties for these? Were they just his mates and nobody minded? Were they obscure and it "didn't matter"? I'd love to dive in and sample everything, but I don't want to be sued... what's the right approach here?
The record company would deal with it. So sample away, just label the samples...
A lot of sample based music was never cleared. If it isn't in the credits somewhere then it almost certainly hasn't been cleared.
The fact is that it is an expensive process to pursue a copyright claim so unless it is from a big label source people tend to just get away with it.
You can get a chance of getting sued if you are a popular artist, ofc. It is better to get your samples cleared cuz sooner or later, someone might want to discover the stuff you sampled, so yeah. Look for the sample clearance the Avalanches went through their albums. That was a LOT of work
where can I find the first sample?
Awesome how you found the samples. BUT. there is one that you missed. listen to Dr Alban - It's My Life. I'm pretty sure that fatboy slim samples the 'Pap Pap' vocal in this tune.
nope check whosampled database
👍🏻
@simonth2 you mixed it?
What happened to the jackie mittoo sample?
Hey fellows, where to find that PAM PAM! vocal sample?
Hi there from the future! I found it.
th-cam.com/video/QGzb52LN1EY/w-d-xo.html
I rediscovered this track recently - I don’t know any of the songs which are sampled but about 60 seconds in, a calypso rhythm kicks in (and again later in the song), and I can’t see or hear any reference to that here?
Change The Mood by Jackie Mittoo
Thank you! Am loving that track, reminds me of The Liquidator 👍
What we dewin
how is he finding these tracks?
Ты мне можешь сказать какое софтваре используется здесь?а так сласснец!
Hi mate could u please tell me the software used to make this audio plz Traktor by any chance?
It's Ableton - It says it in the video's title
sample 1 is Kenny Dope - That Gangsta Shit
ok, i was suspicious of "DJ shadow sample"
4:24 i checked my ichat to see who got online?
How...
@Hoylzie: how stupid question is that ?
збс!
Why pitch up the same sample? And not pitch up the rest to match it?
mono or no go.
To say that its a sample from DJ Shadow is ridiculous...
To me this shows how shit a lot of Modern so called music is. So thank you for providing my well held believe about the music industry.
make youre not from brighton
A bit off.
No shit retard hes not norman
I wanna eat your brain... :D man do I wish to be able to work like this in ableton..
Cool, altough the idea seems ripped off from Jim Pavloff.
