    This is the same approach MJ used. That's why his tracks were very catchy. You just reminded me a very long time ago I accidentally approached an arrangement this way and from everything I've done all this years that track is still my favorite. You helped me understand why now. Also by using your mouth you avoid making a extremely busy drum part just cuz you can only make one noise at the time so you basically prioritize what you hear.

    I'm biased, but I love this. Ever since I bought some VST software, all my SNS feeds have been flooded with ads about automated beatmaking software and chord builders. I'm happy that it might open doors for people that might not have music backgrounds, and while I don't have anything against that software or the people that use them, I feel like it creates some of the most boring, predictable, quickly-staling music that I just can't get into. It is so refreshing to see a video like this; encouraging people to really dive into their own creativity to find their own unique sound. My process for drums (and for melodies!) is very similar. Just making a loop and jamming on it for a while til something 'clicks'.

    Great video! I love how you can trace each of these valuable tips back to a simple concept: follow the feeling instead of the technical approach. All the tools at our disposal are meant to enhance the feel of the music, not the complexity of a song. This means that sometimes you'll have complex tracks, while other times they will be surprisingly simple, yet both will sound musical and convey the song's emotion.

    there are many of this type of video on YT but this is a cut above them all. There is gold buried in there - I love the record in the beatbox and use that as inspiration.

    another cool tip: do the percussion/drums with your mouth and them right click, convert into drums and you have Ableton create a midi pattern of your sounds, pretty cool in newer live versions! you can make drums from sampled drums and change the sound!

    Very helpful! Thanks!! Using Cubase, but the process is what Im listning to- and I had a couple of those things on my learn list: good start= example ways (side chains...)

    you could also drag the audio file into midi and create drum patterns that way. also a shortcut for your tip at 5:27 is shift+cmd+c. Cheers!

    You can do the same thing he does with the lfo-tool within the Audio-Clip. Click on it press cmd L to open the deatailed menu. Go to Envelopes on the bottom left and select Clip and Gain in the Drop-Down-Menus.

    Man not a bad video, not a bad tip. Ty. I’m only 5:00 in so far so I don’t know if you’ll get to this or not but you can take that audio track of you sketching out beats with your voice and you can convert it to midi in Ableton so you can apply whatever samples you want to it at that point.

    • @badhabit
      @badhabit  ปีที่แล้ว

    Good observations for better beat-making. Definitely within any genre there's certain stylistic requirements, but it's way better with variations. I play a bunch of acoustic drums, so when I do beat machine or sample pad stuff, I like having lots of voices and time changes.

      Really depends on the genre. Dance music drums are supposed to be “boring” because you need an anchor to dance to.
      Rock music doesn’t matter because white people just sway around
