Just did this the end of last September to a 68 autostick that was sitting since 1985. Changed cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil was bad so I replaced it, rebuilt the carb, and replaced the non-functioning fuel pump and it fired right up, no smoking or knocking. I'm driving it today! Love this little bug.
I bought a '71 Super Beetle in 2016 that had been sitting since 1997 without the engine being started. Towed the bug home. Replaced plugs and timed. Ran a fuel line to a spare can and she started right up as if it had been driven the week before. Amazing quality on these air-cooled VW's.
found a similar beetle in a barn, thanks for the video will try to get it started. I only have experience working on Subarus but hope i can get it to run
thats awesome how much crap it blew out lol... I had a 69 baja in highschool and drove it all the way through till I graduated with NEVER doing an oil change (because I was young and stupid). one day I decided to go ahead and do one to "treat" my car lol... when i opened up the strainer I found about 3/4 of a pound of sand and muck... I couldnt believe it would run, and ran GREAT, with that kind of debris in the case. I took my time and spent about 4 hours cleaning and spraying carb cleaner in it and reaching up with rags and pulled as much of the crap i could see out. once satisfied that I'd done a good job I sealed her back up, put oil in her and fired her up. she sputtered a bit but sounded great. I drove about 2 miles and the engine blew up. Apparently I shouldve just left it alone lol.... (that being said, the motor I replaced it with had set for nearly ten years previous and it legit fired right up with nothing more than a moment of sanding on the points.)
we always use straight 30w or 10-30w oil. As far as the motor, we eventually did a rebuild. I have a preview trailer online showing the rebuild, it will be a multi-part series on 36hp rebuild.
Any tips on keeping it going? My 71 super runs great for about an hour then dies, I can't restart it right away. I usually have to let it sit for 30 minutes or more. Any help would be great.
Wow 30 PSI? I know nothing about these old aircooled engines...what is the optimal PSI for compression? 30 PSI just seems way too low to run. All my VW knowledge is in the early watercooled diesels where 300 PSI is worn completely out and you'd like to see 400+ PSI per cylinder!

This is one my favorite Classic VW videos!
Lawn mower gas tank
Flames from the exhaust and carb
Love it

Love them old motors coming back to life
That was awesome. The look on your dads face when the crap came flying out was priceless "HOLY SHIT" ..LOL. Triple Like. Fantastic work guys.
Cool!!! Congrats for the video, it is amazing to see it running again after so long time.
Thank you so awesome> Beginning to try myself on a new 86
Very cool! Good luck to you. It is very rewarding.
Loved this! Mine's only been sitting for three years so it gives me hope!
you tought it woud not start? ours had been sitting for 8+ years an started it with some brake cleaner in the carb

that was pretty funny! glad it got up and running!
Great video! Made me laugh and gives me hope!
I've got a similar situation on a 67. Thanks for the video!
any tips for an engine that flooded with water for 20 years?
For 20 years?? Whoa. Salt water or fresh? Crack it open and inspect the internals right now.
Ahhaha great vid, good to see it alive, and the Star Wars song in the back ground ahahha
+Solomon Spydro Is it really the Star Wars song? Who plays it? Thx
+Chris D yes it is not sure who plays it's, it's the song when they go into the bar
Thank you this was excellent video
It's a beautiful thing.
Can get my crank to do a half rotation think might be some rust in cylinder wall any tips?
Try a lil wd-40 down the cylinders and let it sit, or marvel mystery oil.
You don't need to put any oil in the cylinders if it turns over ok ? Is it a good idea to put a little oil in there anyway ,? Or not necessary?
Love it! Nice work, guys.

that looks so much fun.
this made me smile :)
Run set for 15 years it said it started right up after a little bit of time cleaning out the tank in the lines
Ha ha how awesome! Great video Chris
What size wrench did you use to turn the crank
30mm
Very Nice!!
Love the Cantina Music
Sounds sweet!
that looks so much fun. damn
That's awesome.
Very Very good and top of galaxies! hehe
Nice! Looks like "clear a few generations of mouse nests in exhaust" should be a step.
You use multi grade oil or was that just to have clean oil? I remember back in the day they used 30 summer and 20 winterDid the compression improve?

nice.
I love this
that was great! good job guys!
Good job
Best song ever btws
Where did you get the kit to hold flywheel and starter.
did you recheck the compression?
That was pretty funny when all the feathers or whatever it was flew out of the engine.
stinkin mice ,,here is your eviction notice,
Is that the cantina band music?
Any tips on keeping it going? My 71 super runs great for about an hour then dies, I can't restart it right away. I usually have to let it sit for 30 minutes or more. Any help would be great.
Sounds like your engine could be over heating. The easiest way to check is after letting it run a while, the dipstick is to hot to hold.
COOL
What was that thing you did for the timing?
+Kit Caboodle Static test light timing.
I'll have to look that up when I finally get to working on my bus
engines love to run
👏👏
Chris you could've been a good actor on the sopranos
haha, thats funny. I actually worked with a few actors from that show, and even went on set a few times back in my filming days.
Now that there is funny !

+dedfrog at least 90psi it should be. It is already building up though on this motor.
super geilllllll :-)
germany
name of song ?!
+Julio Oropeza Cantina Rag by Jackson Smith.
super geilllllll :-)
Very, very good! Fantastic! Like...
Hey Chris, do you know "Marcello Tonella," from Brazil?
Channel in youtube: Marcelo Tonella.
Runs like a rebuilt motor from GEX
Cosmetically GEX looks great but their reputation is not good at all lol
it diden't even smoke blue . paint them tins & send er on its way.
That's not an engine its a flamethrower :D
Love it! Nice work, guys.
Ha ha how awesome! Great video Chris
