Am I ready to be a motorcycle commuter?

  • The day after I got my motorcycle endorsement I wanted to commute to work, but there were some things I needed to figure out first:
    1. What is a safe route to commute to work?
    2. How do I carry my things on a motorcycle (computer, shoes, etc.)
As a new motorcycle rider, I needed to make sure I had a safe route to get to work. I didn't want to deal with too much traffic or dangerous intersections, and I wanted to make sure I had a safe route mapped out. I went out on Sunday, when there isn't much traffic, to test out the route I had planned.
I was avoiding stop signs where possible and choosing traffic lights, so I didn't have to try and pull out into traffic. There was a 4-way stop on an incline that I was worried about, so it was good to try it out when there wasn't much traffic.
I hadn't driven in traffic at all yet, or managed any big intersections, so I took a roundabout route to avoid busier roads. My home is only a few miles from work, so I didn't have far too go. I added another mile or two with the route I chose, but it was a much safer and easier route for a beginner motorcycle rider.
As far as carrying my things to work - I have a computer, shoes, and my lunch - I chose a backpack I already own. It has a slim profile so it wouldn't be too bulky on my back, it holds my things well, has comfortable shoulder straps, and a chest strap to keep it secure. It's not a motorcycle backpack - just a travel backpack I already owned.
My backpack is an older model - this is the newer version of what I used: amzn.to/46PlFSf
Check out the video to see my scope out my intended route to work, see the backpack I used, and watch my first motorcycle commuter ride!

That was amazing, those junctions looked positively evil- so much different to the UK where I am. You are doing so well. 😊

Ive been racing and riding motorcycles since i was a teen. It is refreshing to see you with proper equipment on. A snell rated helmet motorcycle pants and jacket and proper motorcycle boots are 1000000% necessary. Lastly these things will protect you when you do go down. I repeat it is not going to be your fault if you are safe and not speeding the damage will be manageable with maybe something broken or badly bruised. But there is an old saying its not if you go down but when. Teens texting on the phone an elderly person pulling out in front of you. Always drive defensive always pay HYPER attention to your environment always be prepared to brake or even lay your bike down in an emergency as this can save your life. Practice makes better but not perfect. Beautiful bike you will thoroughly enjoy riding as it is a sense of freedom and pleasure few understand. Be safe have fun and be careful congratulations on the new License and bike

Thank you! I am having a great time learning and getting better, and I am definitely a 'wear the gear' person!

So agree. I cringe when I see someone on a motorbike or motor scooter in shorts & tee- shirt!

@@judithfaber2667 My wife laughs at how heated i get about it. I live in south FL and ive never once ridden my bike without full gear. People dont understand what concrete does at 25 mph even to jeans. Let alone 40-75mph ive walked away slightly bruised after laying a bike down at 65. Someone hit me from the side didnt even see me or care to stop.I dont care how hot i am in my gear it keeps you alive and not miserable after 3rd degree road burns
