i can tell you one thing from personal experience: you can stand in front of a mountain/cliff/hill whatever and know: its possible to make it, but wont be easy. sometimes you get it at the first try ( hit a good trail ) , but then the hill wasnt hard enough. the real step hills are like: we try to get up there and everyone of us needs 3-5 tries for example. sometimes you make 10m and whatever happens. front or rear tyre slips , you miss the lane or whatever . in baddest case you fall down like pro in 10:00.. but that just can happen. the terrible at a event like this. you only have 2 or 3 passes. so if you fall on one and this is 0 pts.. doesnt makes you feel very happy ^^
I will always remember the day I rode up a long steep hill like that on a narrow 6" wide path / hard packed with my girlfriend on the back didn't race but just road up the hill to a road at the top. ( A Honda 350 ) Nice and easy sweet as you please / just concentrated. I knew I did not want to lose it, or she would get hurt. /

When I used to go see the hillclimbs at Muskegon, Michigan, the safety people had ropes that were anchored at one end and had a big (18" or 0.5m) hook on the other end. They would try to get the hook into a wheel or the frame to keep the bikes from going all the way back down the hill. I never see this on any of the TH-cam videos.
19:36 guy goes all the way to the top amazing how he is able to get enough power down without flipping it over. It's like his arms are tied to the bars.
