- Performing an automatic landing and a more common ILS landing in the 777-200ER in FlightGear.
This is a more slow-paced tutorial, because I realize people like to see those and because I don't have time to make an 'edited' video this week.

If you're concerned about speed increasing while descending, use the FLCH instead of VS. Only time I use VS is when ATC notifies me of an oncoming aircraft and I need to climb or descend quickly. Excellent video though, really enjoyed.
I tend to use V/S on decent because I can just calculate the distance. FLCH can be unpredictable on decent

Just an FYI to help you: the Boeing standard ILS procedure has you at flaps 5, on the heading to intercept the localizer. At Loc capture, you should set heading to the inbound ILS course. When the Glide Slope comes 'alive' you should go gear down and flaps 15. At GS capture, you should go full flaps and set missed approach altitude.

Thank you oscar! I made my first landing in flight gear today with your instructions(though other headings and such) but I landed safely, not the smoothest, but I landed!
I recommend disengaging the autopilot and autothrottle when you are about 500 ft. Then control manually and you should end up smoother.

That's correct. But if you don't check the QNH, and the plane tells you you're at 3000 ft, while you're actually at 3500 ft, you might miss the vertical ILS interception.

Just a reminder that if you are landing at an airport like Mexico City the best altitude to be at for the ILS is 8000.
Because of the city's higher altitude.
If the app only comes up, it's okay cause I did it before and landed many times thanks to him

I know you don't have to, usually I don't either. But if you're new to ILS, this will give you more time to see what's actually happening at the interception etc.

Hello, Osjcag. Nice video and good landing. Can you tell me which FlightGear version ar you using? I see the 777's deck quite different, and seems that some things in the flight panel are functional now. I'm using FG v. 2.4. I supose yours is earlier, but I'm not sure. Heya Bud, excellent video. Worked just as you showed I copied almost to the letter even including the KLM livery, lol. But I learned many other things I hadn't realized, like getting frequencies right from the data on the map for the localizer, rwy heading, etc. I thought 135 was way to slow though. I never set
the a/p less than 165 but made it, probably used more runway than you. So when is the a380 tut ?, thanks gain, you should have gotten more likes.
you have to be slow right before touchdown, and have ground spoilers. and you need to be pitch=ca.3*
They needed you on the Asiana flight in SFO.
@46bax that was a pretty decent landing. No one is perfect specially when they have to talk whist landing!
Actually there's not much "updating" involved in getting a newer FlightGear version. Just install the new version, like you would install any other program. The old version of FlightGear should keep on working, but if you're not having any issues with the newer version, you could delete the old one.

You don't do a 180 turn to catch that side of ils you keep going till you have gone past the airport then turn 90 to 150 degrees to get base then the ILS flips to that runway

Dont do a FULLY automated one. Disengage all autopilot cunctions at 500ft and cut the power to idle at 30ft and start flaring at 20ft. Hope that works.
If you want to fly realistic, yes disengage at 1000ft, this auto land is for IFR, you are right. But this is a tutorial on how to do the ils autoland.
Actually, I did not! I was used to the 'old' 772 in FG always doing that automatically, but in the newer version you actually have to arm them yourself. I found out about that after recording this video, when I tried to figure out why they didn't deploy automatically during the recording :p My bad!
and the A330 on Github as well. I am testing to see if its as functional as they say it is
Its really similar to the autoland in the a330 which is usually smoother though.
Episode #33 (coming in a few weeks) will be about the Airbus A320/A330 autopilot, I'll include ILS approaches in that HowTo :)

ooof I'm dumb. I was just on FG flying the 777-300ER and I went on my Route manager or whatever you call it and selected an airport without ILS as arrival. When I had the runway in sight I tried to capture the localizer and it would not work (cuz no ILS) AND since I was not paying attention to my fuel quantity my engines shut down due to no fuel and I crashed into residential area.

I said something completely different that what i wanted to say, my bad :P. I meant to ask if you could make a video on how to move all of the data (scenery, liveries, aircraft, etc.) from and older version to a newer version of Flightgear. I have 2.4, and i want to update to 2.10 while keeping the data. Updating Flightgear to a newer version is a breeze. You don't necessarily have to make a video about it, you can tell me over the comments if its easy. Thanks!

hmm to me the video ends at 5:58 just after the initial turn to 270° heading.
you dont necesary have to go to the beginning of the ils. you can also line up with it at the half of the ils path. but lmfao oscjag! i thought you were pro at landing! what the hell xD

Unfortunately knots is the only speed measurement other than mach speed that the 777 works with, mach doesn't help you much. Some slower airplanes use miles per hour. Knots are the standard speed unit for both air travel and boat travel

Hey osjcag, i want to know how you steer the aircraft. With a joystick or the tilter steering? If its joystick how do you do it as my joystick cant steer the aircrft when on the ground.

Hi! I have a big problem, when I use the 777 (all of them), I takeoff, and when i want to put the autopilot, it doesnt work, for exemple, I can't press on the NAV button, when I click on it, it just do nothing. Im telling this cause I really like the 777 but I can only fly it if I want to do it manual.. Thanks! :-)

All that i get is either flooded, or airports disappear.
Try starting FlightGear with the --enable-terrasync option.

that was not a smooth landing... I thought you meant to shut the autopilot off just before you land, and land manually

My 777 does not switch on LOC + APP together. I see one only light. I can't switch on both together.. How did you do it ? There is some keyboard shortcut ? tnx ;)
ok I figured out what is was.. I was using an old version of 777-200ER. Now I've installed the one of february 2013 and now LOC+APP they switch on together.
