Automatic Landings - FlightGear HowTo #28

- A tutorial about making airplanes in FlightGear land automatically. You can use this if/when:
- you're not good at landing yet and want to land on the runway for sure
- you're in a lazy mood (I can relate to that)
- the visibility is so bad you can't see the runway (most realistic reason)

The ILS Categories are not something you can 'enable'. Some runways are equipped with CAT I, some with CAT II and some with CAT III. Every category has a different 'decision height', which is the altitude at which you will have to decide wether or not you are continuing the landing. You know you'll have reached that altitude when the plane shouts out 'minimum' (there's more info about that on Wikipedia). When you look up the ILS frequency, somewhere you'll find which category ILS the runway has.
Awesome :)
The 772 is indeed supposed to idle automatically, yet I've had some problems with it where it would already idle one of the engines at around 300 ft, which results in a pretty unstable flare... But if it's working perfectly fine, that's awesome!
Enjoyed the video, Oscar. Thumbs way up!
Have a great weekend. :)
Thank you very much and give us a lot details
It really works now. Thanks :D And for your infomation, I tried landing the Boeing 772 with Auto Throttle. Once you flared, the Auto Throttle will automatically go to Idle for you and you can land just by reversing thrust. :P
you are the best singapore airlines for the win!!!!
The A330 will (at this moment in FlightGear, at least) always attempt to immediately fly to the perfect glide slope path. If it can not find the correct signals at that point, it is likely to crash; whereas the 777 in FlightGear will still hold the current heading and altitude until it finds the signal.
So on the A330, fly at ~2500 ft AGL and wait until you are very close to the glideslope (check on the map). Only then enable the LOC and APP modes. Maybe that helps!
How to setup Logitech Extreme 3D for taxi ?
Hi! My friend i need your help,i am surprised to see your aircraft running soo smooth,in my flightgear, a little roll can cause the plane circling crazily, thats why i think that flight gear is a bad game, but your video has given me some hope, plz help me. Another problem that i have is that i cant enable mouse control, please help me in that too.
Regards
thx mate
Yea.. I had Rollout on the A330-200 and -300 series at first but there was a major problem... A lot of FG's ILS localizers are messed up, they don't point to the center of the runway, so the airplane will try to go along with that, instead of the center line (try the 777 Autoland in a couple of non-major airports and you'll see that), so I commented out the rollout code.
Cool :) Lovely video though
Can you do a ILS tutorial landing on CAT II and CAT III?
Hey...nice video!!!, i think you could to make video tutorials about other types of approaches and landings like "VOR/DME", "ILS/DME" or "NDB"...
The autopilot should do just fine in slight crosswinds. Heavier winds might be more of a problem.
The technique is exactly the same though, so there's no harm is testing it for yourself!
I think you need a good wind degree and speed to make it idle automatically and it will flare quite smoothly :D
Oscar, you forgot one of the most important things here to ensure a smooth automatic landing on the A330-200/-300 series... The FMGC A/THR control.
You need to go to the APPROACH PERF page on the mCDU and make sure the Mode is set to AUTO. Then, on approach, you click on the SPD knob (so it shows ---) and turn on the A/THR. That way, you don't have to mess with the throttle, it ensures a much smoother landing yet on the TDZ.
Cheers!
Check out the last video in my A330 series video tutorials.
You have to enable the autopilot and put it in "LOC" mode.
I tested both. They are able to do it. ;)
Where did you download that livery (a330 emirates)
hi can you plz tell me how to downlaod a330 and how to use auto pilot in that
where did you get airbus a330 ?
How do you see all those planes cause it wouldnt work for me
Hi there awesome videos!
I just have one problem, I can't apply thrust reverse when landing and I am on iMac! It is still the delete key for thrust?
I believe so... Not entirely sure though, but it's easy to figure it out ;)
what does a crosswind automatic landing look
:o why didn't I watch that tutorial before -.- I hope the annotation at 5:48 fixes it!
I want you to do a concorde flight!!!
It's not out yet because there are some software problems, it should be out in a few days to two weeks as I heard about that in FG forums ;)
Maybe for your next video, you could highlight the new features in 2.8.
hello oscar. I want to know if the777 -200 will be able to visual approach with the engine failure? please respond.
Yes. (Sorry for the insufficient notice) Once i get my A330 to the ILS Signal, The aircraft starts to act weird by going up and down and crashing to the sea.
Wow, half a year since I've played FlightGear, AUTO LANDINGS?!
How can i enable cat II and cat III?
It's not that easy to describe here, but I've made an HowTo for that (search: "Crosswind HowTo FlightGear" and you'll find it).
It will be a bit different in FlightGear 2.10 though, so maybe I should update that video some time...
Hey i haven't updated FG to 2.8, will this work in 2.4?
wow wat flightgear version do u have
mine if i swich to auto landing my plane malfuncion it it just full trhust and broke the engine
Would the Automatic landing work with crosswinds?
Hmm I might just do that... I'll have to dig into navigation myself first, lol!
For the a330 you dont need to steer manually BTW
Are you talking about an autoland ILS approach?
Which plane were you using? I recognize the problem of losing the vertical bug. Try to slow down very gently, not making sudden adjustments to the throttle.
The 777-200ER by yasim! I was attempting to land at ATL. I think I have speed part down...Just completely befuddled how to get the aircraft to switch into the land 3/flare/rollout...It descends nicely but those three indicators never pop up? It's killing me that I can't get it!! Thanks for replying BTW, you're a class act.
I cant find a link to download 2.8 for mac. Please help.
Thanks
Oscar, quick question.
Will the 777-200LR and all versions of the 777-300 come with automatic landings, since they're part of the 777 family...
Can A320 do that too?
VOR/DME Approach for next time?
Why is an ILS approach with the A330 harder than the B777? I can't seem to land perfectly with ILS on a A330 but i can do it differently on a B777.
LEGAL!
Where did you download the Airbus A330?
I tried this but right as I approached the runway the plane got kicked out of the glide slope and my plane flew right over the runway...circled round then crashed....
One doubt why does the auto land land too late
I still cant auto land with the A330 It always comes short of the runway. Any Help?
I had a feeling this wouldn't work for me....Everything is good but I don't get the LAND 3 or ROLLOUT or FLARE?? What else could I be doing??? And the speed confuses me also...when I slow down I lose the vertical bug a little bit?? Anyone...help please??
So the autopilot will descent automatically ?!
hey oscar PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO ILS LANDINGS I STILL DON't GET THEM !!!!!
3:32 looks like someone learnt a little something from experience
hmm... so much info..i'll just keep it to flying my jets and visual approach and landing haha..
why did my data cannot show???
Hehe. True. I can't be the only one :p
That might be the case, yet I would suggest you try a different way of advertising. For quite likely people who fly in FlightGear have made some conscious decision, based on whatever reason(s), not to fly in FSX.
People who come across this video have most probably been searching for a FlightGear related video, as apposed to a video where this same technique is demonstrated making use of FSX.
I appreciate your effort of giving certain alternatives to FlightGear, but no thank you :)
use your mouse to go up to Help > Common Aircraft Keys
(late reply)
maybe because A330 is still under development in FG
I dont know why but the A330 is so hard to manuver on the ground
What the name of the airport?
(I´m speak spanish no english)
Then why are you speaking english.

It's because CAT I isn't made for the Boeing 777. :)
14th yeah ive never been so early for a video
Whenever I try to land, the plane swerves to the right, and then crashes. Why is this?
use the rudder to stop this. 0 will turn right. Enter will turn left
But the problem is, it's on autopilot,so it will ignore any sorts of input
wow it's so difficult, but to listen to the tower you need internet
That's a Singapore airline
