Fast and simple urban sketching - Sydney Opera House in 15 minutes

A timed sketch in pen and wash really makes you focus on the essentials. It's fast. It's simple. It may not be perfect, but it is Sydney Opera House and in about a month I am going to see it in person (so exciting). Speed sketching makes you ask yourself what do you want to say in this painting? What and where are the big shapes? Where are the large areas of tone? What can you leave out? What art supplies help you get information down on paper as fast as possible? And if a line is wobbly, so what?
Having only just started to do these timed sketches and I am really enjoying them. Have a go and you will be really surprised at what you can do. Apologies, after uploading this I’ve been told the timer is making the film glitch. Unfortunately I do not know what I can do to fix it, so I hope it is not too distracting.
Materials used - fineliners with pigment ink 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8mm, a waterbrush, a blue watercolour and a A5 Moleskine sketch book. Use what you have. If you plan to add watercolour make sure your paper won't buckle under the strain, but otherwise it is better to sketch with a ball point pen on photo copy paper, than not to draw at all....

What could you sketch in 10, 15 or 20 minutes? I was pleasantly surprised how much information I could capture and continuous line drawing certainly helped. Why not have a go and see how you get on?
