My only thought about a brick backsplash is how tough it’ll be to clean. It’ll hold dust, and general kitchen splatters. It looks amazing, but perhaps not as practical as tile.

    • @mirandab1945
      @mirandab1945 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Completely agree. I have stone tile countertops and backsplash, and while the tile is easy to clean, even the morter shows oil stains. I would never consider brick inside a kitchen knowing all I Kno now

    • @carafowler9235
      @carafowler9235 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That’s what I was thinking. The brick on the pillars would look sooo good and maybe a rustic subway tile or even a penny tile backsplash would go with it

Is there any way to add like a silicon cover to the tile and mortar so it’s easy to clean?

I have a brick veneer backsplash. It’s cute but I wouldn’t recommend, especially behind the stove. I plan to remove it when we remodel the kitchen.

You’re so wise to reuse and recycle as much of the existing cabinetry as possible rather than gutting and replacing it all for the sake of it. It’s so much better for the planet as well as your finances. You don’t have to have the ’dream’ studio McGee style kitchen to have something that works for you and that you love. Can’t wait to see it come together 😊

I’d recommend getting a professional painter for the cabinets that will do a hard lacquer finish! I wouldn’t recommend doing a diy with latex paint… it can chip very easy if you don’t let it dry for at least 48 hours

In my old home we had super soft wood floors throughout the whole house even the bathrooms that started to get "beat up" within a couple of years from children, animals etc. Our contractor recommended refinishing the floors with a product called Gym-Seal which is designed for gymnasium floors, basketball courts, etc. Make sure it says on the can it is for gymnasium floors, basketball courts, etc. because there are other brands on the market by this name but are not designed for this type of use. Literally, this stuff is thicker than a penny with one coat and is so easy to clean! I lived in that home for ten years after we refinished the floors and the floors still looked brand new when we moved even in the bathroom. I so recommend doing this with your wood floors Angie.

I think if you go with combo bleach wood/(any) shade of green you don’t need to lighten your floors, leave them as they are. It will give warmth.

What I like about you and your channel is that you keep it real. You think things out and don’t always have to have brand new! Like how you cleaned and restained your outdoor furniture. That turned out amazing. We all have our dreams but I like how your tossing around the idea of being satisfied with what you can do with what you have and how to improve it. Good luck in whatever you find to be your solution.

If a brick look for a backsplash is what you decide on I would recommend looking into brick looking tiles. They will be more even and smoother for easier cleaning but gives the look of brick

I see it! Lightening it up will totally change the space! If you can get the right green to work with your existing floors and are able to lighten the wood, it'll be beautiful. I just had to strip, sand and paint all my cabinets and it's a lot of work, but so worth the time as it saved so much money and I didn't have to buy any new cabinets. New hardware and paint made it a whole new look. Can't wait to see how it works out!

Been through 1 executed kitchen reno and am currently planning a second. MY BIGGEST TIP: Measure it out and use a floor planning app to see what really will and won't work.
I heard you say that you "don't think the full fridge and freezer will fit" where the current bar is. We switched to a full fridge for just a family of 6 and I LOVE it, a freezer wouldn't work beside it in our kitchen layout so it's about 6 steps down a hall and around a corner behind the door to our basement. We have no problem managing them separated.
With the new plan I am working on, I have a sort of U shaped kitchen which isn't wide enough to accommodate an island, but the 2 sides are too far apart to work comfortably, there's lots of zigzagging through the space to get anything done. Doing some measured floor planning and 3D rendering, I determined I actually have a lot more space than I thought to fit in a pull out pantry. I thought I only had 18 inches and I have 36!!! That will allow me to move my food storage upstairs, a huge win.
As for the cabinets, try stripping them then bleaching, I think it might work to lighten the colour, then you could do a pickling stain on them to cool off the tone and maybe introduce your favourite green.

Pine isn't meant to be used for flooring - way too soft and will just end up ruined if you re-sand it. In the UK it's only used as a sub-floor. Best to lay another floor on top - probably laminate or LVT.

I’ve had the thin brick in my kitchen for five years and love it. I always see comments about keeping it clean, but have had no issues even behind my gas cooktop. Maybe a swab test would reveal some old food bits, but wipe downs with soap and water have worked for me. Your cooktop doesn’t even have a backsplash, so no worries about keeping it pristine anyway. Go with what you love!

if you have to paint your cabinets, I recommend using a color on the bottom cabinet, then use your lighter color on the upper cabinets. they won't show as much dirt that way. I have white upper cabinets and my bottom cabinet is called poppy seed and I absolutely love it! changing the door knobs/handles will make a huge difference too!

    Hi Angie,
My only advice would be to replace your countertops. There are so many beautiful faux countertops that look amazingly real (like marble, etc.) They are relatively inexpensive and very durable. We re-did our kitchen 8 years ago and I couldn't make up my mind on my countertops. My husband had said to get what I wanted because we would be living in our house forever. I honestly couldn't justify the huge cost difference for the expensive countertops so decided on one that looks like soapstone but isn't. I LOVE it! I'll probably have it forever and it doesn't bother me that it's not real. The farmhouse sink is worth fighting for, it is such a statement piece that really ties your look together and if you don't do it now, it might not happen for a long time. That's my 2 cents! Happy planning!

My husband is a custom wood flooring manufacturer + installer. They work with a lot of recipes that they create and spend lots of time creating + perfecting them! With pine, keep in mind that it does naturally have a lot of yellow undertones, so I definitely recommend working with different recipes that do include a multi step bleach process before staining/finishing. ☺️ 🤍

One house we remodeled, we rented a floor sander, sanded down the floors, re-stained them, and poly coated them. It actually was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be. It was one of the few things in the remodel that was easier than anticipated. I love the brick look, but worry about keeping it clean. I absolutely adore the mat black with copper appliances!! What ever you decide I know will look beautiful. You always have great taste!!!!!

Excited to see what you come up with! We have DIYed many projects in each home we’ve owned and to help you with painting your cabinets... even if you get a paint that says you don’t have to prime, do it anyways! I have found that on some surfaces it doesn’t hold well no matter how much deglossing you do. And priming can help with having better coverage especially over dark wood. I do love your kitchen as it is but I totally get wanting to change it up, I do it every time we move I love making it my own. Good luck excited to see the end result!

Lots of great ideas and plans!!! So excited that you are able to make yet another area in your home your own! You absolutely don't have to sacrifice the farmhouse sink dream - standard cabinets can be retrofitted - they just need beefed up support to hold the larger, heavier sink - and a granite cutter to modify the existing sink opening - I've been looking into it for our kitchen refresh!

I am dealing with some of your same issues right now for my kitchen. I don't want to change my granite but it looks like it is no longer available and we want to add a counter and move our microwave. Our cabinets are fine only 8 years old but need more counter space and larger bar for prepping and seating. Love all of your ideas just go with your gut and you wont be disappointed. If you have to change your counters I vote to lower that counter area. You will be amazed how that will open things up and seem so much larger. Good luck!

I love everything you're talking about...the only thing I think with brick (which I love the look of too) is it is hard to clean and also hard and rough, if little ones run into or fall into it. Also, I love that you are being honest and real about not getting every single thing you want out of the kitchen...that's real life for so many others that watch. I cant wait to see how it turns out!

Before you pull the trigger on cabinets I would recommend painting out the room and wood trim to get rid of all of the other red toned wood except for the cabinets. This would help give a better perspective on the floors. It could be that all the other red toned wood from the cabinets and trim is making them look more orange/red than they would if everything was painted. One thing to also consider with possibly restraining the cabinets is how whatever tone you pick plays with the floors.

Definitely consider cleaning practicality. Copper and gold faucets can require more maintenance. Also with the farm kitchens they scuff and the porcelain can chip with pots and pans. Just some stuff to consider. I’m sure this is going to look amazing!

Whatever you do will look great. I applaud your plan to reuse as much as possible. That is so sensible. As for color, I understand your wish to brighten things up, but I happen to love the wood tones as they are. Maybe paint the walls a lighter color that works with the wood you have. I don't have your decorating ability, but you will make it look outstanding.

I expect a lot of people will disagree with me 😬 but while I like a lot of the inspo photos shared it feels very trendy and like everyone else. I personally love your kitchen as is, with some small changes- maybe the appliances and sink and small decor pieces. I appreciate the warmth and classic look with all the open space that’s there. I wonder if the white even with a more moody color thrown in would feel too open and sterile rather than open and cozy like it is now. I’m excited for whatever you do because I know it will be beautiful and fit your family’s needs and goals. Best 🤗

  • @marilynmoreno9688

My mom is an architect/interior designer and she loooves brick walls. So for her kitchen, she special ordered a brick wallpaper that looks exactly like a brick backsplash (people never believe it's wallpaper) and it's made for the kitchen to withstand frequent washing and even heat! If you can find something like that, it may be better than real brick...bricks absorb moisture and will accumulate dust. Another idea would be to pick everything else out before deciding on the backsplash, so you can match the backsplash to the design of the kitchen afterwards.
Otherwise, I really like your ideas! And I especially love the appliances you selected. However, if you choose dark appliances then dark cabinets and darker floors may be too heavy looking. If you keep your darker floors, dark appliances, and more airy/neutral coloured cabinets it would look really stellar. Just my thoughts. :)

I just renovated after a flood with that same sage/ eucalyptus green cabinets and black slate floors. I’m surprised you want to remove the red wood, it seems so complimentary to your wardrobe. I like the brick backsplash or arches or floors. Everything in your kitchen is already beautiful I wonder if you would keep one of the red tones, either floors or cabinets. I do recommend a small kitchen elsewhere during renovation. Ikea has an amusing temporary kitchen setup for around $100. You will hate dishes. Just buy compostable disposable plates and bowls.

I redid my moms old wood cabinets about 2 years ago in a much smaller kitchen. They look great, but it was SOOO much work. We had to clean them completely, sand every inch, used wood filler, prime, sand, paint, let dry 24-48 hours, sand again, dry again, and possibly 3rd coats. The paint took about 28 days to "harden." Luckily she was not using the kitchen so that hardening process was not an issue, but I would be afraid to use the kitchen if I were in your shoes. Hiring someone to paint was so expensive it would have been about the same to buy new cabinets in our case.

Just some tips. Love the plan of the kitchen. When you are painting the cabinet, use a paint sprayer. You can use cup hooks on the top of the door, so you can hang them up. Alexandra Gator used this method. For the floor check out pvc floors, although kwality can effect durability. It comes in so many designs like wood and tile. Good luck

  • @KyleePicc

I highly highly highly suggest getting your cabinets resurfaced. You can get new door fronts in the style you want, and then a cabinet resurfacer can make the rest of the cabinet match. It is more expensive than painting, but in my experience painting does not last. It costs a FRACTION of the price of replacing cabinets but you will have the look of 100% brand new cabinets! We did it and I would suggest to anyone.

This is so relatable. Working with what you have and making the best of it. I just bought a Cafe matte white range for our upcoming kitchen renovation - heads up that the matte white and matte black are no longer in production. They are on hold. If you find one somewhere, BUY IT! There aren't many (if any) left anywhere and the "backordered until...." dates are just estimates. Last I heard from Cafe is they're out of production until about October of this year.

I'd like to toss out a couple of ideas about the large sub zero fridge and freezer idea... I know that you utilize the butler's pantry area... but what if you put the freezer/fridge units there and have leftover cabinets surrounding the units. That would open up more counterspace in your existing kitchen area for prep work, etc. (where the old fridge is now). a double wall oven unit could also go in the area of the butler's pantry without losing too much space if you're worried about the larger fridge/freezer units being there. Also, as far as the empty space if you remove the existing fridge, you can install the cabinets from the butler's pantry to that spot so nothing goes to waste. OR get an undercounter fridge/freezer unit for beverages, etc in the bottom area left if you move the existing fridge. That would still allow you to have more counterspace but not have an empty space below. I looove kitchen design and remodel brainstorming!
There's a free (or super cheap) pc program called Sweet Home 3D that is extremely easy to use and fun to try different layouts. There's a camera function so you can do a walkthrough tour of your floorplan.
Hope you have fun with this project!
    kathy

Also if you’re looking for budget Friendly options you can find companies that sell used kitchen countertop, tiles, cabinets. Can’t wait to see your progress videos!

I love your color-scheme. My favorite shade green is sage-green, erring to darker/grayish. I would either go with bottom half sage-green and upper half lighter/wood-toned. Or the'wall part' of the kitchen as sage-green and the island as lighter/wood-toned.
The pine-floor will always be soft and easily get damaged. I would change thar to something more hard-waring.
I have never preferred black appliances so I can't see how it would work with your color-scheme. But that is personal oreferences.

We used some of the same inspo pics for our new build kitchen! We are doing green cabinets too! Evergreen Fog from SW with a stained island and vent hood. We purchased 2 Fisher and Paykal counter depth fridges/freezer on bottom with a joiner kit to look like 1 big unit. I hope it functions well for our soon to be family of 6! Good luck I love your style!

I think if u have dark appliances like a fridge at the wall, I maybe would choose the darker color like green there around it, so make the island bright and the back wall dark and moody?

I’ve seen some drop in apron front farmhouse sinks. I watched one small Reno where their granite was cracked at the front of their drop in sink. They removed it, and cut the front of the granite. Then did a drop in apron front farmhouse sink.

We installed vinyl plank flooring over very orange/red hardwood when we moved into our current home. It was affordable, is very durable, we love the look and there was no need to remove the hardwood. It sits on top of the hardwood and is not adhered in any way so could be easily removed if someone preferred the hardwood in the future 😊

Yes - they should cover the pine, it's a softwood and not meant to be used for flooring, just a sub-floor.

@10:00 I lay good LVT flooring, a brand we like that is cost efficient is California bamboo. I personally wouldn’t rip the floor up in order to LVT, I would lay over it. But this also depends on your baseboards, trim, and your threshold as in if you can pull them and place them back. Are you going to have to then trim doors?
There’s a lot that goes into that decision for sure! If you like to reuse, then you could always reuse the current wood floor somewhere else as something else after staining it.
Oh also, look into a concrete floor. That may get you the color and feel you’re looking for without the brick.

I love the vision you have and the colour palette…I love that you realise you can upcyle instead of waste what is good / what works and as one of your many gifts is home design your half way there! My only thoughts are consider your black appliances against a mix of cream on top green on bottom …( might fell a bit busy) so maybe green cabinets top and bottom on back wall especially where double oven fridge etc are! And white or light wood island…yes to brick columns…splash back 🤔🤔you might then think to make floor darker🤷🏻‍♀️only because you asked! ❤️🙋🏻‍♀️🇬🇧💕jane

I have personally DIY'ed my kitchen cabinets/countertops with different paints, and I'm in the middle of re-doing my dining table and chairs. My opinion on stripping finishes is to SAND, SAND, SAND! I researched the heck out of strippers and used several, and they wouldn't take the finish and stain off completely like sanding did. Invest in a good Orbital and Detail Sanders, and I'm pretty sure you can get the cabinets boxes and doors to a light color you like. It will be messy and time consuming, but definitely DYI doable! Good luck!

I just did my kitchen (very much on the cheap!). In the UK we have a brand called Valspar where you can get paint colour matched to any picture or paint sample you bring into a DIY store. I'm sure you will have something similar in the USA. This meant that I could get the exact colour I was looking for. I did a quick sand, used an any/difficult surface primer and then 2/3 coats of the colour. Used way less paint than I thought I would. Was careful for the first few days while the paint hardened and now it seems super hardwearing, which I was worried about. Really recommend it - it looks like a whole new room!!!

One thing that I don’t personally like the idea of is having natural toned wood cabinets with the more orange tone of the floor. I just can’t picture in my head how you could make those blend together. Just something to think about. It may not bother you at all but I would personally be a little hesitant! Im sure no matter what you do your kitchen will turn out gorgeous just like all of your other projects!!

Very excited to see what you guys come up with! It's fun to contribute as a subscriber, so thanks for letting us! Love the vibe you're going for!
I definitely have thoughts and if you consider any of them that would fun! Maybe doing a more neutral brick (whitewashed or painted) could help seal from kitchen grime and work with the woodtone on your floors but still bring texture. I would hesitate to do the brick across the veneer beam you have over the island bc brick/stone is never used genuinely in tension (spanning across) only in compression (wall/arch/pillar). You could totally do it floor to ceiling spanning across your entire back kitchen wall and sides of island.
For "butler's pantry" you could put up something to the effect of a loft glass panel wall (modern farmhouse vibes)
Instead of that terrible veneer your beams and pillars are wrapped in you could just tear it off and wrap them in reclaimed wood to get that rustic vibe.
If you got this far... I'm so looking forward to it... and keep up the good work!

I think the brick is absolutely gorgeous as a backsplash however you will ALWAYS have dog hair in your food. The dog hair and dust in the air clings to the brick and mortar and if you have it behind the stove and on food prep places it will continuously fall in the food. I am 100% all for a brick floor though!! Or brick on the back of your island where there are no cabinets and brick Pillars!!

The key to painting cabinets is to get a shellac primer, Zinsser is the one I have used (learned from another youtuber) latex is not going to last at all unless primed properly. Your kitchen is already beautiful by the way, but being a white kitchen fan myself I completely understand you wanting to redo it.

Have you ever thought of just painting your floors? Maybe something with a diamond shaped pattern or just solid paint. It’s a very American Country kind of look. Also, don’t know if you were saying that those pillars are functional of just decorative, but it would really open up the kitchen it you could remove them.

being a mom of 5 with kids around the same ages as yours, I would think that replacing your floors with something lighter and more durable would be your best bet. I have tile on my kitchen floor and have for years, and the hardness is brutal when standing in there for extended periods. likely brick would give you the same trouble on the floor. I bet refinishing the floors would disappoint because of the softness of them. all the best moving forward! the inspiration photos are beautiful!

mr. kate's channel just did a diy counter top and sanded down there granite and stained it/painted it black. TURNED OUT SO COOL. You seem to like more industrial farmhouse, so that would be a cool option if you cannot replace countertops. also set up a prep kitchen, just collapsible tables and setup crockpots, paperplates, etcetera and have that be your kitchen. If you can set it up nearest to the bathroom or a sink so you can easily wash in the tub. just thoughts
