    Rosemary Harris as Aunt May is so adorable. I loved it when she said, “Shame on you,” to Doc Octopus and hit him with her umbrella, saving Spider-Man from getting stabbed.

      Never much liker her.
      Aunt May( when Spider-man had only saved kids from burning buildings and falling to their death, as well as scores of others from death and pain, and also saved Peter's friend Mary Jane from a super villain who had kidnapped her)" He's horrible."
      Aunt May ( After Spider-man now has also saved HER)" Spider-man's a HERO!"

      Sure. SO she read the Bugle stuff about him being a menace, and the other media stuff about him being a HERO, but believed the menace part until he saved HER, but didn't care about all of the times she read about him saving other people( like that carriage full of CHILDREN from the first movie). Hell, she knew Mary Jane and we know that she was telling everyone how awesome Spider-man was and how he saved her life more than once by that time.
      Why would that be. Why would someone only change their mind when they were recued, discounting all of the dozens( hundreds?) of other rescues that Spider-man had performed. Seems kind of self centered to me.

      Also.
      Referring to the OP.
      The guy from the bank was A GUY FROM THE BANK. He would be expected to retrieve bank funds, so, her assuming that a man with the responsibility for recovering bank funds was stealing was quite the leap in logic.
      Also, also. She didn't " save" Spider-man. He would have been fine. He never needed a septuagenarian with an umbrella to save him before.

    To this day, I will never forget being wowed by the "car crashing in to the coffee shop" sequence for the first time.
    One of the best scenes in movie history imho.

    • @anthonymcrooster3703
      @anthonymcrooster3703 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For me personally, that scene was so wtf moment. Harry wanted Spider-Man. Octopus needed Peter to acquire the whereabouts of Spider-Man. Then Octavious goes and sees: "Ah yes, there's the guy I need to question. Facing his back to me, right behind the window, chatting with a girl." Then Octavious' tentacle whispers: "Now remember, he's the only lead we have on finding that pesky Spider-Man. You need him talking so you better assault and question him before he suspects anything." Then Octavious and tentacles have a sync-idea and as they are about to throw the car towards Peter's head, both of them have 1 last sync-remark to make: "I do hope he has Spidey-sense or else we're fu**ed."
      Peter then got *hit* with the same line of reasoning and after his capture, instead of explaining Harry how his father's death was the aftermath of a murder attempt he pulls this cinematic "there're bigger things happening right now" bs. And then the trilogy continues without any major plot-holes (Saturday Night Peter in the 3rd doesn't count as he's only impulsively self-expressing via symbion)

    • @KRSsven
      @KRSsven 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonymcrooster3703 I think it was a combination of two things. Ock knew that he needed Spider-Man to show himself, so what better way than random terrorising of innocent people? He almost seems surprised by them surviving the car crashing through the window - it's highly likely he knew Spider-Man would show up once he did a few random villainous things.
      The other thing is that it's possible he suspected once Parker survived (or even before) that he was Spider-Man, but wanted to confirm it before he took him to Osborn. Hence the capture of Mary-Jane, he knew Spider-Man, whether he was Parker underneath or not, would show up to save a hostage if he named a time and place.
      Idk how satisfying the theory is, but it's better than thinking he tried to kill the only lead he had on Spider-Man's whereabouts.
      Agree on the Harry thing - why didn't he immediately say 'your father was murdering people, tried to kill me with his glider but hit himself with it'? For me that would be more natural dialogue...and you wouldn't need the butler telling Harry in SM3 what Peter should've told him in about 30 seconds in the previous film. It's possible Peter really does feel as though he killed Norman and feels guilt that he died rather than being captured - he had the same guilt over the guy who he chases down and falls out of the window.

    • @jessejtaveras3909
      @jessejtaveras3909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

People really wanted everyone to unanimously agree that Homecoming was not only the best Spiderman film but also the best iteration of Spiderman ever. And to do that everyone was to damn the quality of Spiderman 2. "It was never really that good." "It was only good for the time." But that isn't true, it still really holds up. Much like DC wanting you to forget Christopher Reeve and watch Justice League (ugh) so that the new version gets legitimacy.
      How about making good films? That would give them legitimacy.

    This film always brings me back to the time, 2004 was a massive turning point for me in various ways so that's possibly why. I'll always think of it and the 2002 original film as being important to me because of the times they remind me of. I first saw SM2 in Canada and it blew me away. Possibly because of the nostalgia, hearing the ending themes and seeing Spidey swinging through the city always brings tears to the eyes.
    I love that Peter is at a low point in this film while MJ's career has taken off - it juxtaposes in a lovely way with SM3, when MJ's career has stalled, she's fired from her stage show and she has to see Peter as Spider-Man lap up all of the attention. I loved that for the third film they chose to show how famous Spider-Man has become - he's the New York celebrity now and has to cope with a jealous girlfriend. It's so sad to see Peter happy and oblivious to her frustration and anger over his innocent but in hindsight stupid choices, but also angering that she never actually explains things.
    However, lay off the score Oliver. The main theme is amazing and instantly recognisable as Spider-Man's theme. These films helped prepare the way (along with X-Men) for the MCU, whether people realise it or not. We simply wouldn't have had the MCU if it weren't for the success of these earlier films proving that the genre worked on the big screen.

    Great review as always but I gotta say, I have to disagree with you about the films score. I think it's one of the greatest superhero scores, and I've never felt that Elfman's work ever felt any more samey than say that of Williams or Zimmer. He knows to give it a different flavour when it's The Flash, The Avengers and Spider-Man as opposed to Darkman and Batman. Mind you I am a bit of a fan. especially with his work for Oingo Boingo.

      He always criticises the score in the Raimi Spider-Man films for no reason - the main theme is instantly recognisable as Spider-Man's theme. I think it's because he doesn't consider it as good as the Superman films he loves (for some reason, I think they're awful in places) and thinks the scores in those films were better. I've always thought Oliver fanwanks too much over the old Superman films and puts down the Raimi films for sketchy reasons like effects or music. Maybe it's because Raimi used the same basic plot frameworks for the Spider-Man films as Superman and he resents that.
      Fair enough, more people probably would recognise the Superman music...but most people on the planet know who Superman and Batman are. Spider-Man, not quite as ubiquitously known (close) and doesn't have as famous a piece of music. But that doesn't mean it's better, just more people recognise it.

    26:35 that's one of the major things that you won't find in the Tom Holland movies. To me, the Raimi Spider-Man movies really do nail the quieter and more moving scenes. The emotional Danny Elfman theme and the emotions of the actor really make you feel something. Rosemarie Harris really does act like the guardian to Peter. And the way she acts make me emotional as well. But also the dialogue between MJ and Peter are lovely and sometimes gutwrenching as well.

    All these years later and I'm just now seeing Bleeker Street in Spider-Man 2. Add the reference to Doctor Strange and it's no wonder Raimi got the Multiverse of Madness job. Now if they have a cameo of Peter, Joe's Pizza (which apparently is real?) and cameo of that owner saying he's been there for close to 25 years or "Pizza Time!" it'd be a nice callback to Spider-Man 2.

    I still recall that early summer day walking out of that theater after the movie had ended. I was as lost as ever at that stage in my life. For all the bad hands Peter was dealt in both SM1 and SM2, just to see him finally have the girl of his dreams, the way he swung through New York in glee in the final shots, you’d swear he won the lottery - it drove home the message that true, obsessive, unconditional love really is more rewarding and satisfying than money or any other material wealth.. the movie made the 19 year old me really happy. It gave me a sigh of relief and hope for a better future almost no other superhero movie has done ever since, really. For all the guys praising dull, soulless, marvel movies while shitting on SM2, I wonder sometimes if we even live on the same planet. SM2 will be perfect in my eyes, it’s really a story that almost everyone can relate to, a universal story of love. This one movie alone beats almost every superhero movie ever produced by Disney combined.

    Excellent video as usual, Oliver! There were some inaccuracies regarding the writing situation. Michael Chabon's draft was the one that featured the love triangle and Harry putting a bounty on Spidey's head. Gough and Millar's draft allegedly had Doc Ock closer to what we ended up with. Also Gough and Millar were the first writers hired but David Koepp came back to write an uncredited first draft. Chabon says that his script was the first to have Doc OCk as the sole villain.

    I just turned 19 when this movie came out. Snuck into the theater with some friends. As a young man with the world on his shoulders, I didn’t know what to do with my life. Worried and maybe nervous about my choices, the next couple hours watching this film put a smile on my face. It transformed me. I walked out buzzing with optimism, joy, feeling of amazement, romance, and hope. I will never forget that experience. To me, Spider-Man 2 is the perfect super hero movie. It’s small, down to earth, relatable to most men and women who ever get in love for someone they can’t have, perfectly paced with few flaws. What super hero film today can balance out all those elements and give you that feeling of being the little guy that Parker is yet instilling hope for a better future? The endless Dark Knight rip-offs and the cheap hollow Marvel slapstick comedy films don’t really stand up to SM2. The final minutes of the film still gives me jitters, all the burden and the weight that you felt as Parker are lifted. Empowered by love and hope, Spidey swings into the sunset anew, almost invincible. That’s a great feeling, that is literally what it’s like to be in love. That’s what makes SM2 timeless. No superhero film since have captured those universal emotions, no other superhero film has anything worth telling as SM2, no matter how cool or edgy they can make them these days.
