bigevilworldwide I highly disagree. Peter especially has a lot of character growth. Watching him trying to balance his life in #2 especially is timeless in my opinion. I love the first movie and the portrayal of uncle ben’s death. Peter’s conviction for revenge, then realizing vengeance turned him and Harry against each other. You are entitled to your opinion. However over 15 years from its release I think Sam Raimi’s Spiderman is an absolute comic book genre movie classic.

Spider-Man 3 is seriously underrated. Not in execution, but the unique ideas they had in it.
Peter regresses and becomes an asshole because he's never had to deal with success before. He's like a starved kid in buffet; he doesn't know how to control himself. He spent so long being a loser that when he finally won at life, it got to his head. And it all goes downhill.
That's an idea I will always appreciate.

I thought the dance/emo montage was quirky, funny and memorable.....I laughed out loud in the cinema. I thought that it was great that they could get Willem Dafoe back again as the spirit of the Green Goblin (most big actors think they’re too good to return for cameos in big films) The emotional core of the film is between Peter and Harry which really pays off at the end, and the ambiguous final scene where the future of MJ and Peter is uncertain is more reflective of real relationships. Only the score for the third film is a bit lacklustre, but without Danny Elfman it was always going to be a tough gig.Taken as a trilogy, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films are excellent. And I always watch them as a trilogy.

One of the most overhated movies of all time.
Full of great character writing for Peter and a solid arc of forgiveness for him involving Sandman who was also pretty sympathetic and had a nice ending to his arc.
Great special effects all around especially on Sandman.
Literally every fight in this movie is fantastic (much better than any MCU one), like seriously you got the exciting and dramatic Peter and Harry fight in the air, the brutal Peter and Harry fight at his house and then that awesome fight with Sandman in the sewers which is filled with fun moments like smashing his head against a train and all that.

Your description of the plot makes the film seems so much more coherent and exciting than it really is. There are small details you describe (like Peter's addiction to the suit) that just dont come across clearly enough to have any impact. I've seen it several times and always felt that it has a lot of great scenes and moments in it - when taken individually - but somehow, when seen all together it just doesnt gel. Personally, I've always felt the MJ stuff to be the weakest part of the movie and unfortunately this where the focus lies most of the time. Dunst was likable in the first two films and did not detract from the main story - but here she is shrill and bitchy and her personal problems just arent very compelling and drag the film down. I know the intent was Peter's insensitive and selfish actions (from the influence of the black suit) are creating the problems between the two - but again, its not clearly depicted, and you feel more sorry for Peter than anything. Clearly, in order to have Dunst return, her contract must have been renegotiated to include more screen time and this was their solution.

This movie still has more soul and charm than any other non Raimi spiderman movie. The Raimi trilogy just hit different than any other superhero movie. They embrace the goofiness and camp of the comics fully all while having fantastic character moments that aren't interrupted by terrible jokes or forced awkward stuff.

Also I haven't watched this film in a while so watching this video made me notice the name drop of "Ryker's." Neat detail that I never picked up on. I feel really bad for Christopher Young because I really love his scores! Also your montages throughout this video are absolutely fabulous!

The two first films were amazing. Spider-Man 2 being a masterpiece. This film just couldn’t measure up. It should’ve been about venom only. It’s still a charming good film. Toby McGuire was a great Peter Parker. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Way too many characters in one film. The Gwen Stacy story could’ve been Spider-Man 4 with Harry Osborne getting his revenge

  • @Andy_Draws0209

Apparently the end battle was RADICALLY different where in when Peter shoots the web to free Eddie from Venom, instead what Pete pulls out was a Venom like Skull that speaks to Peter saying "It never wanted me, it wanted u! It always wanted u" Peter then turns as a voice says "Never wound what u can't Kill!" And that was the actual final battle Peter trying to fight Venom, whose was trying to more violently and viciously bond with Spider-Man again

I got to meet Cliff Robertson when he came to visit his old college in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He went out to eat at the local fine dining restaurant where I was maitre de in 2008. He was incredibly gracious but also very frail and feeble at the time. I remember his eyes were watery and he needed to sit down immediately. Such a nice man and a great actor. The camera took off at least a decade off of him in those films. RIP Cliff.

Another excellent review, Oliver. I've always liked Spider-Man 3. It's got flaws, but I still liked it. I really wish Sam had just gone with the Vulture instead of being forced to use Venom. Maybe it would've been better. Eh. Who knows? Anyway, wonderful job as always, Oliver. Oh. And using the music from the 70's Spider-Man tv show while talking about the video game was great! I love that theme. It's a nice bit of 70's cheese.

  • @ShadowACE1998

    1. John Jameson never brought back the symbiote in the comics. Spider-Man acquired the symbiote on an alien world and brought it back with him. In the comics John Jameson brought a sapphire like stone back with him from the moon and it turned him into the Man Wolf. Both these elements were combined for the 90s animated series.
    2. The fact that this movie A, names Uncle Ben's killer and B, then changes who killed Uncle Ben was the worst. Uncle Ben's killer has forever been known as just "The Burglar" Even when he returned and died of a heart attack in ASM #200, his name was never revealed.
    3. I actually liked Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. I never really liked the Eddie Brock character in the comics and thought a better character to become Venom would have been Daily Bugle photographer Lance Bannon. Bannon had years of history in the Spider-Man comics (where as Eddie Brock debuted in the first full Venom issue ASM #300) and was already an anti-Peter Parker type character. In fact Topher Grace's Eddie Brock is far more like Lance Bannon.

I think he's confusing the comic storyline with the 1994 animated series, where Jameson Jr DOES bring back the symbiote after Spiderman saves him from his crashing spacecraft (which Jameson purposely misinterprets as sabotage).
