Cory, you have to try Baker Street Superbissmia Cosmic Cherry seed petunias. The blossoms are edible and get HUGE. The plant is very aggressive. I grow them every year and think you’ll get a kick out of how unique they are. With that said, I also have more than my share of supertunia vistas in various colors as well, those of course are bought as small plants and always perform well.
This year from seed I grew: Easy Wave Spreading P. from Outside Pride. They did great and were beautiful, filling the container well with some trailing and darker centers. Also: Pink Wave Petunia from Fedco were okay but they trailed quite a lot and had lighter centers. Evening Sensation hybrid from Burpee were not much of a sensation. They had no scent, and did not fill the containers well. The color was nice, however. I will have to send you photos. I always grow different wave petunias and have never been disappointed with them. I did buy a red one last year (can't remember from where or the name) and it was supposed to grow large and it did! It had very long arms and lots of flowers but it wasn't what I wanted to fill a basket. In the garden next to other flowers it held its own, however, and was quite nice popping through here and there. They are very, very easy to grow from seed. I've also heard that some buy an expensive petunia plant early, then take cuttings and end up with several plants. I may try that one year. There's nothing like the satisfaction of growing flowers from seed. :)
I did almost all my Petunias by seed this year many double flower type, Grandiflora Dbl Cascade, Glorious Mix, Pirouette, Superbissima Triumph Mix and Giant Alba, these last 2 have multi color throat and are ruffled petals. I think the doubles are my favorite. I just wasn't going to spend the high prices they want for PW plants and I got more enjoyment from growing my own. I'm saving seeds from a pink with white strip and a yellow one that I really like.
I bought a couple of those Proven Winners I stand container recipes from Lowe's, too, but I repotted the into a 4'x2' oval stock tank planter. Within 3 week they filled the planter and are spilling over the sides. It's insane that they think that THREE supertunia mini vistas will fit in a container that small! They get ENORMOUS!!
I tried to use them as directed; but I agree, they really need more space. It took everything I had to not pot it up sooner - I think the time is now for mine.
Love that you do all these follow-up videos Cory. Never had much success with petunias before I started watching your advice. This year I’ve had to cut back my wave petunias, but they filled out nicely after the cut back. Just cut back the bubblegum because it was starting to look sort of ratty. My biggest success has been the Picasso absolutely gorgeous, well mounded and full of blooms with no cutting back. Yet.
I've had good luck with my wave petunias self seeding in the pots I had them growing in. at the end of the season I take out the plants and shake them off onto the soil that's in the pot to drop any seeds that are on the plant. I put them in my unheated Southeastern Wi greenhouse over winter. in the spring I give the pots a light watering and then a week or so later a light water again and I get some sprouts going. I keep them in the greenhouse and divide them into other pots. I've had luck doing this for a couple seasons now. I usually get my pots from home depot so they are just generic waves
@gailgosch7663 I collected seeds a few years as well and didn't plant I discovered my method purely by chance. I love garden surprises . Petunias take such a long time to flower that I found I always started them too late. My by chance way let's them start on their own time line 😊
I have grown petunias from seed. Tidal wave, shock wave & easy wave. They turned out really nice. Especially when I pinched them back often while they were babies. I didn't fertilize much throughout the season so they never got huge like yours do. But they did make very nice baskets and containers.
I grew Fotofinish Blue Petunias and Opera Supreme Lilac Ice Petunias from seed this year and they have done fantastic. Slightly different habits, both incredible. You won’t be disappointed.
I hope my bubblegums and royals bounce back. We've had really hard rains these past two days. We'll hope for the best. Loved the video. I have been fertilizing every third watering this year and have gotten the best results I've ever gotten. Thank you.
Those petunias are gorgeous! I was a heavy fertilizer early in the season, using water soluble a couple of times a week, and I have backed off to once a week now. I can definitely tell a difference when they get a lot of fertilizer. We have a lot of iron in our well water. My step dad installed a new faucet for me for my birthday on our top deck to make watering easier, and it was connected to our water line that runs through our water system. After a week of using that, they looked like they were dying so I had my husband disconnect it from our sink water line and run a different line all the way across our house to the hose water that isn't connected to our water system. The difference was crazy. Its amazing how water quality can affect things like that. I have also been trimming mine regularly to get the tops to fill out a little more. I would really love to try different, more cost-effective petunias, but I have such great luck with the more vigorous ones! Would love to hear everyone's suggestions!
Hi Corey! Couldn’t agree with you more thought the Proven Winners had gone up a little too high at my garden center, so I bought the cheaper four pack of petunias well I am going back to Proven Winners. Can’t wait for next spring.
Looks great!! I worked on my downtown and I’ve told you this. Put out geraniums, Sunpatiens and a few petunias. We also did an adopt a bed. Had some mixed results. Many times the downtown was tore up so it was hard to water. My supervisor cannot understand why flowers need care on the weekend like watering and deadheading. Sadly I’m done with the program after this year. They just don’t understand the work involved in flower growing.
Amazing results. I remember watching that video when you started the experiment. It makes me feel good about the choices I made with some of my petunias. I did cut mine back but also did extra fertilizer because they needed it. I'm about 4 weeks out from when I did that and they are looking great. Thank you for all this information.
Thanks Corey! I out too many black and blue salvia in one pot and they took over sadly over growing my petunias. Last night I trimmed some of the salvia down hoping that will give the others a chance. Planted with bubblegum petunia and creeping Jenny. Hummingbirds love it!
I have Wave petunias (same color as PW Jazzberry) fall over during rain and gets slimy as well. I have to dead head these all the time or they look horrible. Their color is beautiful as the PW and twice the size blooms as the Jazzberry. I purchase both brands as a test. You can not crowd the pot as I did an experiment on that as well. One plant of either brand in a hanging basket is enough as long as you give plenty food and water. Thank you for your videos. Love the detail and honest opinions.
I grew caliburst yellow Petchoa from seed this year and they have turned out beautiful. Holds up really nice in the rain and hardly any deadheading. Germination was almost 100 percent.
Please do Petunias from seed! First year growing them for me; the ones I tried are Double Pirouette from Mackenzie seeds. I would love to hear your thoughts on them ! 🙏🏻 thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. Wishing you the best growing weather from my zone 3 balcony garden 😇
Love your videos and petunias! Thanks for the fertilizer tips. What do you buy to add iron? I have 90% of my hanging baskets hung on a swivel. I think it helps on windy/rainy days.
Great comparison Corey. It must have been hard for you not to repot rather than stay with the original container for the experiment!🙃. Yes proven winners are a bit more money, but I trust the product and have never been disappointed! By the way I hope to get photos sent today of my pots for the Show Me Yours. I’ve been away. 🇨🇦👏🌸
Tried Wave Carmine Velour this spring from seed indoors. Surprisingly easy. They fill in between Mango Salsa landscape rose transplants. Very florous after some soluble fertilizer a week ago, and higher temps (MN). I do a lot of annual selection via awards or trials, like AAS. This one definitely branched out more than the original wave that often can be just one long vine. Will be trying Evening Scentsation petunia next year.
Hi, I grew wave petunias from seeds this year (E3, shock wave and regular wave). All are performing excellent (with regular fertilizing and occasional trimming). My favorite is shock wave - mounded and it seems to have more tightly packed flowers. I also started petunia “Evening Scentsasion”. It is performing well, although not as vigorous as wave. I look forward to trying some new petunias I learned from you, next year - of course from seeds. And, as far as wave series. I plan on getting all shock wave colors for the next year.
The petunias are beautiful. Please elaborate on the fertilizer ratios. If you can specify the fertilizer you use, I would be grateful. So far, Miracle Grow has not been my friend.
I always use the amount recommended on the package. I’m using Beat Your Neighbor this year, but haven’t had a problem with MiracleGro. What problems are you having with MiracleGro? Is the soil of your containers is completely dried out when you fertilize, that can cause the roots to burn - and that could happen with any fertilizer. th-cam.com/video/ONXjtCrf8UU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TJBwNYFM66PTh5Et
I grow easy wave. Tidal wave. Double cascade. Daddy mix. All do well for me. Still not as aggressive as supertunia. We have so much humidity in missouri that we have so much trouble with crazy tuning. I'll not buy those for greenhouse again
I have grown most of the Wave xollection available from seed in most of the colours. Tidal Wave is one thats very good I don't hear you mention much. They are amazing in planters. Petunia seeds also do well when planted at the same time as bacopa seeds as a nice combo.
Big YES to getting that drop-it Supertunia Lovie Dovie into a bigger container with the best soil you have. All the fertilizing just won't make up for the plant being able to spread out new roots into new soil. Expect a quick response after you do that. Keep us updated.
With the sluggish one about 10 minutes in, what if you had put it in a larger pot? You mentioned in an earlier video how the small pots create problems as they dry out so quickly and don't have as much room for the plants to grow. I have to say they all look really good to me and I found myself saying 'wow' quite a few times.
Thank you for this update. My tidal wave cherry petunias did great, and then kinda went through a lull. Corey what's the best soil to use in hanging baskets?
I’ll be honest, I haven’t been loyal to a particular brand (and we mostly use a mix that we buy in bulk), so I don’t have a solid suggestion. I think I need to run a soil test next season.
I experimented this yr with cheap dollar tree 4/1$ petunia seeds they are mixed colors. I threw seeds in some hanging baskets and are doing really well to my surprise not sure which variety they are. I feel like they are self seeding as they are getting some huge seed pods that I've been plucking for next year.
I’ve been really happy with Wave seeds from Park Seed. I’m in zone 6. I start them in February and put them outside in late May in baskets, planters, and beds. Next year I’ll also try a frilly petunia “Greetings from Jaromere” from Baker Creek.

I had to have them as the name Kermit goes of course with my love of frogs. I only bought 4 as that was £10 and rather expensive for a petunia I thought. I put them in a manger basket and it did not take long to fill out. They were just amazing, I cut them back several times and they just kept growing. No dead heading to do really but I did some anyway. They flowered for months. I was able to get them last year again, however this year they were not available anywhere. I looked online but nothing, I did however find another Crazytunia which turned out to be purple, I thought it was going to be pink (camera lighting no doubt). They have been slow growing but started to fill out now after a few months. There is a Crazytunia terracotta which I am going to give a try and I will still look for my Kermit Rose. I do not know if you have them in USA but they are worth a buy. I have just looked online to see if I can find your Supertunia Tiara Blue or the pink but does not seem to be available. Your baskets all look amazing to me. Thank you and best wishes from England.
Kermit Rose is an interesting one. I’ve seen the Kermit Purple which is similar to Cascadias Pitaya and Supertunia Picasso in Purple and Tea Purple Green Edge.
Hi. I have been watching many of your videos about patunias. I really like the videos but I haven’t seen a single time you mentioned about budworms! I’m wondering your petunias don’t get budworms at all? I live in Kansas, my petunias gets attacked by budworms right after the first bloom! 🥺

I have had the same thing with my petunias as far as the slimy flowers. I have no clue what is causing this. None of my petunias have done well this year. Do growers still offer double petunias. I haven't seen them for a long time in any of the big box stores or green houses. I've about given up on petunias. I used to grow massive amounts of petunias but every year they seem to be getting weaker and weaker. Any suggestions? Thank, I love your videos. You are one of the most honest growers I have followed. I can always tell when they show the very best they can show. I know that every plant they have aren't perfect but that's not how they portray their products.
Is it ok to trim the petunias anytime??? How often? How much u cut off..could u do a sample of you doing it ? I'm just scared to cut stuff off..thankyou so much
@@marleneegan-hm7lr Try starting them earlier in the year so you can enjoy them before the heat hits. Or even in the fall you just won't get as long of a season out of them.
I grow evening scentsation from seed and am very happy with them. Well behaved and beautiful in containers with other plants, little maintenance required. I don’t like my petunias looking crazy vigorous like that though, not my taste, so that may be part of it.
For the first time in years my petunias have not done well. Some offer them just died. I’ve trimmed the rest back hard and hopeful that they will rebound.
Wait-what? Did he say self cleaning? I am forever deadheading my petunias and find it very tedious. Is there a way that I don’t have to deadhead them or do I need to buy a specific petunia in order for that to happen? I deadhead because I can’t stand to see the wilted droopy ones that spoil the look of rest of the plant.
@@anniemi There are several varieties that are considered self-cleaning. The spent blooms dry up quickly and blow off in the wind. You’ll still have dried blooms, but they don’t get slimy on the leaves. I don’t clean any of the varieties I’ve featured in videos. Try Supertunia, Headliner, Surfinia, Sureshot, ColorRush… to name a few.

I don’t, but you could use a slightly diluted solution if you wanted.
Try Laura Bush petunia from seed. It readily reseeds and is a neon magenta. The heat doesn’t hurt it at all.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I wish I could add to the pertunia conversation but it is just too hot for them in south texas!
It’s almost too hot in southeast MI - 90 degrees with 80% humidity. Yuck. Oh and rain about every other day.
@@marcynovak2411 is it always so rainy there?
@@marleneegan-hm7lr Try starting them earlier in the year so you can enjoy them before the heat hits. Or even in the fall you just won't get as long of a season out of them.
I grow evening scentsation from seed and am very happy with them. Well behaved and beautiful in containers with other plants, little maintenance required. I don’t like my petunias looking crazy vigorous like that though, not my taste, so that may be part of it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that different habits are suited for different situations and different preferences.
Love, love petunias.
For the first time in years my petunias have not done well. Some offer them just died. I’ve trimmed the rest back hard and hopeful that they will rebound.
The size of that supertunia Lovey Dovey is similar to mine, in a smaller container. One that I have in a larger container is bigger.
Thanks. For the price of the drop-in, I think I’d rather put it in a bigger pot for more impact.
How many petunia plants to a 10” pot? 12”pot?
Depends on the variety. For Wave and Supertunia, I put two-three plants in a 12” - the Purple Wave baskets had two plants.
How many (blue) Tiara are in that basket?
I want to know too?
He said two in the video
He said 2 quart size
@@kristinstevens1349 thanks, I missed that number.
Yep, two.
I’ve grown superbissima giant Alba petunias from Baker creek. They are magnificent. But take a long time to bloom
Good to know!
@@UpNorthGardenMI thank you so much! I’ll definitely be looking for those varieties next year! 🌼🌺🌸
I’ve had great luck with tidal wave and wave seeds from Jung seed company
Germination rate about 80%
My supertunias got leggy at the root. I’m unsure what to do.
I’d stay the course with good watering and fertilizer. You could give them a little trim.
Slimy-ness - maybe fungal?
I’m sorry, did you say you could get vigorous petunia seeds? 😮
Wave petunias are available as seeds.
