Great Video! I just started my own business after working 25 years doing Efis (Exterior, finishing, Insulation, System.), Stucco, Interior Plastering, and Stone/brick. Your details and explanations in every video are very underrated. Great job and I wish much success to you not only in your Plastering, but also Followers. 🤙🏻
Thank you very much for all of your videos, you are the reason why I started plastering my own house by myself with 0 experience, you are the best man ! Thanks you so much
A tip for you fellas. Give the customer a quote and itemise the prep and then the skimming. You can say you have allowed for 8 hours prep but if you find anything unexpected then it will be $/£ hour thereafter. This way you won't do yourself out of a quid on the prep. Quantify what you will do and what you won't do. Inclusions and exclusions
Hi Blaine - when you say "don't worry about the PVA, I sometimes PVA the day before", Have you never had it where the plaster slides around on the wall as it's still wet?
@@theladdieallan I agree about the stonemason, but not the chippy - they have tools and machines, that if set-up correctly, make their job pretty easy.
@@RedRupert64 chippys yes but its a different ball game go into the cabinet makers realm n such but that maybe seen as a different trade.so a will agree on the chippys mate
if i cant see it but do see issues on outside I always add time, just like this job I learned from a small job that turned big......or I bid what i can see and re evaluate after demo or investigating.....and tell the owner.....show them exactly what is going on.......plus we always think we can do it faster than we actually can or do.......started in 1983 and learned alot especially with pricing since then
Brilliant explanation mate. Yeah absolutely correct double all prep hours. Swings and merry-go-rounds. All the best from the great Southern land of Tasmania.
Yh,so I have no clue were to start with plastering and was wondering if it's even worth learning ??? I would like to build a business around it ultimately but one think that is stopping me is I don't see plasters at every other house working. The idea of plastering a full house for £3,0000 to £4,000 sounds nice but how many of them do you get a month ???? I think my biggest question is will you be fully booked up for months on end. I am not the one to turn down work especially if the money is there. Currently I am working in a bakery on a busy production line doing 12 hour shifts working roughly 60 hours a week to hit my target of just over £2000 after tax. Previously I have worked like 80 hours a week so I no I am not shy from putting in the hours. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you
Hi Blaine great vid . I always use the same mix to second when I can. Chuck a bit of extra time in with it and lasts a bit longer in the bucket but pulls into the walls. Hope you have a good break for Christmas mate 👍🏻
That's a question I was going to ask. The second mix is supposed to be more loose and thin than the first, obviously it would start to thicken up so using extra time makes sense 😊
Good video mate but I'd advise using a drywall gun or a combi instead of an impact as drywall screws don't take the vibration very well and the heads can snap easily
Having an extension built - we want walls plastered solid - is that better than dot dab plasterboard as want solid walls to fix new kitchen into . Which is best ?
could you do a video showing the technique of using a trowel and its different angles, like if place it 90 degress you make of cerment and place it at 10 degress you apply the cerment, something like that.
Hello Blaine, thank you for this video! Very informative. Question for you or any other plasterers: do you need to sand the final coat once the plaster has dried? Also, if there are imperfections such as trowel marks, small holes etc.. do you fill them after the miscoat or after? I thank you in advance. Seb
Your videos are top quality mate 🤌 I've watched a lot of your content. I'm not a tradesman, but I am handy and do a lot to my property others wouldn't have the confidence to. There are a few trades that are like dark arts, electrics are piss easy, fitting cabinets, roofing could be done by a monkey. However, plastering is like witch craft 🤣 and you my man are extremely good at it! I wish you were local to me!
I'm a decorator - only use the steamer as a last resort, for exactly the reason you describe. If you have to use it, keep the steamer moving, don't leave it in one spot for long. Reduces the chance of blowing the plaster off. Painted wood-chip doesn't always repond even to steaming. A good sharp scraper and elbow grease the only solution sometimes.
@@Ulfcytel Have you had any luck with scoring tools? The "Paper Tiger" devices they sell here in the USA are intended to make it easier to soak or steam painted wallpaper. I don't know what they call them over there. th-cam.com/video/4xGdjfpdhdw/w-d-xo.html
I was running consistently 10km a few times a week and hit a point listening to Can't Hurt Me that made me think "if this man can run hundreds of miles then I can run 10". The day after running 10km I went out and ran 10m at the same pace (16.09km). Just goes to show that the performance starts in the mind!!
Warning!!!!!! If you are going to listen to Goggins, make sure you have plenty of water and towels to hand as you are going to be PUMPED!!! Brilliant video for us DIYers Blaine :)
Surely you should have been using SBR or blue grite on re-skim over plaster and painted wall? Lovely advice at the end of the video regarding an inspirational man David goggins❤❤❤❤
I don't know if this is useful but i use blue tape on my door linings and then jjst before you last trowel peel it off and your door linings are perfectly clean.
Another way to fill a hole peace of plasterboard just bigger than the hole put a hole in middle of the peace you've cut out put a peace of scrim tie in a knot put a screw in the knot put the peace of board you've cut out in the hole pull down on the long peace of scrim to hold the peace into place and bond round to make it level
I always put in the estimate, that anything outside the scope of listed works is chargeable at £30 an hour. So for example with the wallpaper in this vid, that would be charged. Only way to not get fucked on jobs
As long as the client knows what preparation is needed prior to doing the actual plastering and like @nikthegreekcypriot says it's going to cost this amount. It's funny because some would want actual figures but if you told them to work an extra 30 minutes in their work for nothing they would spill tea down their front and walk off cursing, but in our line of work it could mean a whole morning and trip to merchants.
Little tip I use when doing around door liners . I use duckt tape on the wood skim onto it and then just Peel of thus leaving a nice sharp clean edge😊

Ive found if i find wood chip or other really well adhered small scraps of wall paper i use double wide scrim to go over it and never had a call back

In what situation would you use Hardwall?
Thanks.
We fit a thin timber bead around door linings in that situation they are about 3 mm thick

Hello, on the X skim have you flattened with the plastic or metal blade?
21:07 David Goggins for the win! I want to do his stretching stuff (2hrs/day he mentioned!) --- but after I finish plastering whole house hahah :D
Great video as always Blaine. I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t had time to keep up with videos 😭
You are so good at explaining this stuff.
Thank you!
Get living with a seal once you finished goggins first book, it’s about goggins, it’s a good read as well 👍

I usually allow at least 2 hours for finding the edge of the scrim tape, just to be sure
Brilliant 😂😂

Is he Mrs Goggins son from Postman Pat?
I used a steamer on wallpaper and the plaster that fell off was mind boggling.
Exactly that my friend. They can cause damage!

do you prime anything before using bonding or does it stick to the paint and dry plaster ?
PVA before Bonding matey. It’ll seal the background beforehand 👍
