for all your skill kirk, for me the best part of your videos is the time you take to clean up and tidy your edges at the end of the job, that for me shows you care about your reputation and your customers. 👍🏻
Im a plasterer but im still always amazed by how the old plasterers used to do things, the amount of time an labour that used to go into a house and no power tools.
The timing of this upload is impeccable. I've been watching a few woodburner surround videos on youtube and not been satisfied that I wanted to do cement board. I think this or straight up lyme is the way I'll be going forward. Thanks.
@@rjpm92 you still have to cover the joins in the cement board if you want a smooth finish so it just seems like adding an extra step for no reason (in my situation at least).
When i installed my woodburner i painted all the surrounding brickwork in black masonry paint no issues with the paint and temperatures and it hid a multitude of sins with the very old brickwork.....saved me using cement board or plastering it.....a cheap an easy option that worked for me
Hi Kirk don’t know if you have ever watched the TH-cam channel TheCarpenter’s Daughter , she has a massive following and I follower her also , she is fitting a wood burner and as she’s not confident on doing a good finish rendering she lined her fireplace with cement boards which also included a large brick wall above the opening , I’m sure she has mentioned your channel in the past , I have to take my hat off to her she would show most none DIY fellas up , love the channel Kirk watched it from the beginning, you don’t half make me laugh such a nice chap , the tips you give out to people is amazing , it’s a 👍🏻from me
I am glad you said that fire proof plaster is a pain to apply. I used it and found it a nightmare to apply , but cheating with one skim of finish plaster is still okay 4 years on
Limes my thing baby! I always flick a thin coat on a very well damped wall. Nothing but sharp sand and a lime with a slow initial set. The top coat is sieved sharp sand and I finish it by applying news paper to dry the excess water off, this allows me to finish quicker with less risk of cracking. I like the fibre glass fibres and they seem to work well with NHL lime. Brilliant video Kirk.
Hiya mate, I've done my whole house in lime ( sand and putty and NHL later as it is a lot easier to mix ). I basically self taught myself plastering as I went on. Now.....I would like to redo the very first wall I did as it is not up to scratch and I would now do a much better job. It has a scratch coat and just a top coat (no skim coat). How would I best apply a new lime coat over the existing plaster? I'm concerned it wouldn't take (key). Any advice please? All that's on wall is a lime wash and the plaster is about 10 years old.
Really good video mate, not sure why the customer didn't want cement board. I've recently done our log burner and it's brilliant stuff. Always find the grey area is the face of the chimney breast with what you can and cannot use as the inside reveals are very clear cut.
Great job! Advice on the ACL. Once you heal it up, look up exercises to strengthen all the muscles that connect around the knees. It will balance your knees and helps take the loads off the acl/mcl muscles.
Having surgery on mine to mate! Knee realignment and I have no mcl at all so having a part of my hamstring taken out to replace it 😢 hope all goes well for you!
Nice work Kirk, it's good to see a good understanding of construction, generally I usually mix in chopped ends of fibreglass, it's hard getting horse hair now, and I usually rake out the morter between 5 and 10 mm, let us know how you get on cheers
Interesting video, like it when you Mix it up, I've done lime window reveals slow , but Smashing finishing ( restoration job) Never worked with the Product before some learning involved once Mastered lovey material to work with, very forgiving 😉
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this and read the title I thought lime plaster, you can't beat lime for anywhere where you get lots of temperature variation.
A house is likely to outlive you. Before it would have been plastered with something soft, easily removed by hand if necessary, now it is plastered with something hard, will require a power tool to remove. You might say, well why would it need to be removed, let’s revert back to the house outliving you, and the world not revolving around you. There was a solution that could achieve both things, you chose one that ticked one of two boxes, it’s ok, but it’s not the best, and for whatever reason in the future someone may want to remove the chimney etc, they now have to deal with very hard cement, making a naked brick feature is now also very difficult.
Brilliant job! I took a burner out of my old fire place opened it up and got it plastered. The old fireplace brickwork leaves the plaster a nightmare to paint think it’s soot is coming through even through wooden skirting. Do I need to line the brickwork with something before getting it re plastered??
Hi there I think you are amazing geza.... I would like to ask some advice about using the lime plaster.... Can I give you a call regarding this.. Building a home in jamaica and would like some advice on what is the right plaster to use in that kind of heat. Thanks once again for your time in reading this message I appreciate it..
I did mine in cement board fided on woth tile sdhesive and i used the smooth side on show ( normally other way around to tile), and it was such a perfect surface that i just painted it, and i didn't even need to do that.
I used that vitcas finishing plaster the other day. I'm not a plasterer by trade though but Kirk was right, it's a right pain to use and really could do with practicing with. That said its not cheap either.
I've used it im a plastering contractor if it does crack they won't stand over the product there cement board cracked in half on job I did id to fix it at my own expense
I'm not a plasterer either but can make a good job of it, Vitcas around a flush fit wood burner was the only thing that has worked and it gets properly hot with no cracking. Bit like spreading lard though hard to get nice👍
my dad use to tell me cut a small piece of External Render Stop (Bell Cast bead and snip the edges that you would normally cover with plaster so you have small teeth sticking out didnt think about it then but it was a good hack for a scratcher
Great video, as with others I’d like to know about the heat board, that’s what I have and it has been slimed with multi finish, is this going to fail and if so can I skim over it with this product or will it need to be taken back to the heat board and then use this product re skim? The exterior is original that’s been skimmed over, I’m worried that could also fail crack.
i’ll keep this stuff in mind, i’ve been using lime this last few weeks, and the product i’m using u cant even do the two coats of top plaster the same day, i put last coat on Thursday morning and troweled it up fri dinner. pain in the arse
Brilliant video lad but a back braking job I hate doing the inside of them big time I never done one to that was having a log burner in but ye now am on it well in lad sound big time
Most of the premixed lime products have fibres mixed in. Careful handling it with your hands, it can burn. You could really make a different Kirk learning lime work, the north is severely lacking in the skillet and so many of the homes could stand to be renovated using lime plaster
So is there much of a grit to it ? Is it a really fine sand in it and trowelling brings the lime to the surface to fill and smooth is that the kinda theory? ... As always top job Kirk pro job every time 👍
Interesting to see this in action, but I can't find anything about the product's ingredients, ie. what are they adding to the lime..? As you say, lime putty and sand alone never set quickly; the full curing process takes at least 6 weeks.
I’ve used that vitcas twice for log burners fecking hate the stuff the last couple of log burners I’ve told the customer to get it tiled inside looks much better lol and they have agreed thank fuck
