      @@terry4144 so where's your video on how to apply plaster big mouth? Yep, what I thought, you don't have one and lack the balls to make one. Go ahead, show us all how its done. I can't plaster for shit, my dad could and I've tried but I disliked it enough to employ guys to do it when I ran my own business in the UK. Now I live in the US, plastering doesn't happen, its all drywall. But come on mate, show us how good you are.

      Absolutely, i don't understand these negative comments, it's obvious he speaks to beginners or ppl who have never tried it before, so why are all these "pro plasterers" losing their mind??? Because of him i will actually try to do the job myself. Even if it's a small job, at least i will try

      @sumisumi-by8xv I've been doing plastering for 22 years and I like this method for going over existing walls. Half of the job is being able to put plaster on a hawk and then go from hawk to trowel to wall.
      I wish you the best of luck in plastering your walls.

      Until you have a go yourself and realise it's not as easy as he makes it look. For complete beginners even getting the correct plaster consistency is hard. Then you'll keep digging the heel of the trowel in, it takes a fair bit of practice to get 'the feel'. You'll aslo be loads slower so you'll find your rushing to try and get to the next stage. Or you'll over work the plaster that'll start to pull it and make air bubbles or worse peel it. Honestly as good as this video is. It's a skill and takes loads of practice.

    Use a medium pile
    Roller sleeve. You don’t get half the texture and it’s so much easier . If doing ceilings use a pole and you can lay it all on from the floor. Use speed skim with pole too.

    Bit the bullet and bought a Pentrillo plaster roller after seeing your vids..I can plaster normally..been doing it for years.. however.. I had a go on a 20m2 ceiling at home..
    1. Great bit of kit for getting the plaster on quick and semi evenly.. I found it going off a bit quick on the first coat and dragging when flattening as I’d done the whole ceiling..brought it back with a slurry sponge ok..
    2. Second coat I rollered a meter strip then trowel flattened it and worked my way across the ceiling.. this solved the problem fine..
    3. Tried my speed skim over it on both coats.. it dragged it off.. so put it back in the van..😂
    4. The roller sheds fibres a bit.. so you have to pick them out.. not really an issue..
    5. Definitely a good bit of kit for a DIY to get plaster on the ceiling without it going all over the floor..
    Cheers.. I’ll be using it again on a paid job..

    I've been following your channel for a while and love your videos. And this is the one I've found the most detailed and helpful so far. Thank you!
    One thing I'm not quite clear on is that when you say roughly 20 minutes per stage... I'm not sure if that's 20 minutes actually applying the plaster, then waiting, then another 20 minutes of doing the next stage, then waiting and so on... OR whether the 20 minutes includes the interval, then going straight into the next stage - so starting each subsequent stage at 20, 40, 60, 80 minutes etc. I hope that makes sense.

    I just started plastering my first room. Started on the ceiling which you said was the best place to start. Jesus christ man! How do you do this every day, my arm is killing! Didnt turn out perfect because my first batch was way too thick, the amount of water on the bag was way off…but i made the 2nd coat much thinner and it turned out pretty good. I think my main issue is not getting it on fast enough.. i really struggled with the troweling because it had dried too much! I bought a sponge today, i think your sponge float technique might give me more time to work with it, even you pros prefer to just trowel! Anyway, love your vids, you gave me the confidence to do my own plastering :)

    When it comes to drywall finishing and plastering I can go from left to right or right to left very easily, and I can do both with either hand. It comes in very handy when doing remodels/patch jobs as there are times when you need to start/stop from either side depending on the situation.

  • @pcno2832
    @pcno2832 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great explanation! If you ever retire from plastering, you might want to teach at a vocational school. The roller method reminds me of something I like to do when painting a wall, not necessarily a plaster wall, that has sort of an exaggerated eggshell surface from too many layers of rolled-on paint, and maybe a minor imperfection here or there. I'll roll or brush a swath of paint, then press it in with a trowel, a drywall knife or one of those wallpaper smoothing blades that resembles a half-size speed skim. I do most of the first layer of paint that way and the second coat ends up much smoother than the wall originally had been; it almost has that glassy look of new plaster. But, I have to say that if I were putting up real plaster, something I only do when it's absolutely necessary, I'd probably use a trowel for every step, simply to avoid having to clean the roller. It might make some people more comfortable though, especially those who are trying to minimize the stress that troweling puts on the wrists.

    Hi Blaine, many thanks for this video and indeed all of your excellent and helpful content. I gave the roller a go, 2 coats with spatula flattening, and then I also threw some sponge floating into the process just for giggles. Felt a bit like a gadget-fest but the end result was excellent. I did find the rolled-on rippled plaster needed to be flattened really quickly as the texture seems to make it pull in very fast; I wondered whether I could modify the process next time to roll a couple of meters, speedskim that area, roll some more, speedskim that bit etc Do you think that would work? Thanks for all the great information, I'm learning loads from you but the skills still have a long way to go 🙂

    Nice video! Maybe ox or someone could make some decent work clothing for plasterers? Light colours like the colour of dried plaster would be ideal, breathable long sleeve for summer or working in people’s houses maybe a light coloured warm smock type hoody for rendering? Wear a black top when skimming ceilings and after 2 days it looks like you’ve been shat on by a hundred seagulls, and not a good look when pricing up after work!

    @Plastering For Beginners Thanks for the informative video which have motivated me to tackle the chimney breast in my 1930s house that requires patching after I opened it up to have a woodburner fitted. I could do with some further advice as the plaster is cracked and blown in places and has previously been repaired. In addition, there is the original coving which is substantial but there is only a 5mm lip so i am unsure about just skimming it.
    Should i strip off the whole plaster or just remove the damaged parts and patch them skim? Also, what about the coving? Thanks in advance, Anthony

    I need to roller a chimney as I can’t get to it to flatten. Is there anything out there that I can use to render this external chimney. I’ve been learning through your videos and I would be really grateful for your help.
    Also, there are a few cracks in the exterior of the house but it’s Tyrolean. I’ve been thinking of just filling them watering down a bit of filler with a few stones to help it patch before I paint it. Would this work? Would it adhere ok with me watering it down. Using troupet external filler. Unless you suggest something. Hope you can help x

    • @woodybollox
      @woodybollox ปีที่แล้ว

      If its tyrolean and your going to paint over it you could make up a mix with fine sand and cement with sbr. Just keep it similar thickness to gravy but not my misses gravy. And if you can't get hold of a tyrolean gun you can use a stiffish hand brush and use it to flick it on by running your fingers over the brush. Practice on a piece of board to get the mix you feel is right for you. Been plastering 35 yrs and always found a way around a problem.

    Cracking content but I need to know how wet the plaster needs to be to apply it ! Can you over mix it ? How much area should a bag off plaster cover ? I know it says it in there technical on Web site ! But in the real world how much area does a bag cover ? Please

    Sorry I probably missed it, bit when do you apply the second coat?

    • @mrtoast4740

      When the first coat is half way between wet and dry kind of like still wet a smidgen but not too dry if that makes sense :) a flexi trowel like the OX makes the finish absolutely brilliant! Can one coat small areas and flexi it and you can't tell after :)

    Do you think that roller method would work over a sand and cement scratch coat. Or would the roller loosen the lose sand?
