Gearbox and Pitchford have made some really poor choices in the past; A:CM, Duke Nukem, G2A partner, petty fights with critics. There is no reason to believe or trust them and no reason to buy their product.

Randy Pitchford to this day refuses to admit DNF and ACM were bad games, pointing out sales (most of which were due to initial hype train) and that detractors are little more than those who have an uncommon opinion.

@DrIvanRadosivic nope this is people becoming smarter.overwatch didn't get flack for having no single player because players started to realized that single player was not mandatory for a game to be good.and battlefront didn't get flack for lacking single player content.it got flack for lacking content in genera.titan fall and evolve both got only flack from a few TH-camrs as they were the first to be launch for single player.as time went own people started to realize that single player content doesn't magically make a game better.its about quality.overwatch was one of the first extremely high quality games that didn't have a single player whatsoever and its proof that your game doesn't need a single player to be good.that's why law breakers got absouletly no flack and mostly positive reviews despite not having any single player.its not a double standard and any amount of research should have told you this.

Overwatch was never over hyped, it's just lawbreakers didn't EXPAND there marketing to xbox plus changed its business model many times from f2p to 30$ back to a last ditch effort to go back to f2p. That's why lawbreakers failed. Reason why Overwatch us still on top of the market and far from "over hyped" is the regular FREE updates plus the somewhat fair loot box system that allows these updates to happen. Plus did you play around when the pink mercy skin was out? Over 7 million dollars was made for charity JUST FOR A SKIN! that's insane! Maybe YOU think it's over hyped but the many others say otherwise.

Honestly, I think Battleborn was a very fun experience. I purchased both Overwatch and Battleborn around the same time, but I got way more enjoyment out of Battleborn. It wasn't hard for me to gather what the game was at all during the marketing phase, and the game play and characters were amazing to me. Word of mouth is what really killed it I think. All it takes is one person to talk down on something and then everyone else follows.
I've asked people what they think about Battleborn and it's always "That game was HORRIBLE! It's a terrible game!!" However, they never played it. Never. This is what kills games. Personally, I feel Battleborn is better and more enjoyable than Overwatch. I hate that this happened to such a fun game.

Yeah, I played both and at first I did not get why people were so head over heels in love with Overwatch. I'm not saying it's bad, I just didn't see it as that great. Then I remembered who developed it.
I agree, i loved everything about Battleborn, from the art design, to all of the Characters and i believed(still do) that Battleborn was a way more better game than OW.
PREACH! The sheep ruined this one. Battleborn had so much depth, in-game lore, humor, and unique characters. Overwatch lacks all of that. I played Overwatch heavily and it made me miss Battleborn more.
I think it all comes down to a few things really. Battleborn didnt come out at the best time really since most people were really looking at Overwatch, and to release Battleborn around the same time as Overwatch wasnt the best idea. And second was honestly the un needed competition between the two games that people made. Making videos on which game is gonna be better, and which one you should buy.
Technically, it wasn't that it happen that Battleborn launch when blizzard did his play test, they did the play test because battleborn launch.
You can see a lot of times when battle born did something trying to grasp some player base, blizzard did a free weekend or double XP. Just so it could die even harder
This pretty much, Battleborn changed it's launch date from Feb, 2016 to May 3, 2016 in Nov, 2015. Overwatch announced it's launch date of May 24, 2016 in Mar of 2016. Furthermore Blizzard timed OWs open beta during the week of Battleborn's launch.
Many a Battleborn themed video (and comments there in) will infer that it was Gearbox who poorly chose their launch date in response to Overwatch or that they should have changed BBs date once OWs date was known, when it was Blizzard who was very savvy in choosing their launch and beta periods and I'm sure Gearbox was contractually locked into their selected date (with vendors/distributors, promotion campaign etc...) by the time Blizzard announced OWs date in March.
Gearbox likely didn't think the games were that similar, despite both having genre staples in their character choices.
Yeah I remember when BB launch was annouced and a couple of hours later Blizzard announced an OW open beta starting on the same day of BB's launch. I liked Battleborn's adult and raw humor more than Overwatch's family friendly approach. Also Battleborn had character progression, build diversity and PvE content too. I played both games but I found Battleborn more entertaining for many reasons. Basically expensive marketing for an overhyped game won over bad marketing.

Forgot to mention Battleborn's TERRIBLE decision to lock away heroes behind progression. Overwatch players can hop in and immediately pick any character they choose, Battleborn players only had a small selection and had to level up to unlock more. Bad design.
Well when you're going up against a game that gives you access to all heroes from the start (Overwatch), which seems more appealling? I'm not against unlocking content but a game like this suffered from keeping the majority of its heroes behind a progression wall.
If your game is dependent on team competition and cooperation, locking away characters is VERY poor design. Imagine starting up a Battlefield game and not being able to play the medic until hour 10.

They were like that when it launched on the market and tried to compete against Overwatch and contributed towards the issues it had at the time. Doesn't matter that they changed it so far down the line. Damage was done for some.

I feel its imperative that I point that while the game is dead beyond the shadow of a doubt on PC, ps4 still has an extremely loyal (albeit comparably small) playerbase, and public matches are still findable within a minute or two. The game still has huge issues, but I love it and still play from time to time.
I play it on ps4 still and always enjoyed it I hope more people give it a go

Truly one of the greatest shames of the mid-2010's. So much potential, such creative, fun characters, it had so much. And yet... it faded away into obscurity for what would seem like forever.

Yeah. Hopefully it gets another chance and is handled better. I loved how intricate each character's playstyle is. You play characters in more way than you can in most games of the same genre and even different genres. Plus, I just like the characters(except Boldur. Fuck him.)

DrIvanRadosivic Firstly I would like to hear why OW didn't backup the hype and secondly, I think don't Overwatch suffers the same problems as BF and Titanfall 2 with the price compared to the content of the game like Battleborn did when it was lauched with a 60 USD price tag. Also if Overwatch went free to play I don't think your opinion about the game would change after showing your fanboyism in this video's comments.
Rieska If anything, Titanfall 2 was well worth the $60 tag on release day. Despite the lack of updates and low population, it still has a strong community and progression is all based on skill and time. There’s none of that “pay to win” shit. Campaign was surprisingly decent and fun.
If not for the horribly timed (and perhaps intentional) release date, further tweaks to the game, TF1 being an exclusive, TF2 could’ve been a commercial success. But now that Respawn ended up bankrupt and bought by EA, the future seems even more bleak for the series

Battleborn is a dope game, honestly. It's really fun and feels more fleshed out than Overwatch. Even though I'm a competitive Overwatch player and love the game, I'm really sad this game died and didn't get the attention it deserved. The stars just didn't align and everything that could've gone wrong did go wrong.

@@tommysuhlami6241 True, I loved playing battleborn when it went free to play. I personally was always checking the game out as it always seemed to be my type of game but I could never afford it. When It went free to play or whatever they called it I was super happy, the game was exciting and I got into a match and had lots of fun. I went to bed and thought to myself "I am playing that game again tomorrow!". I opened it up the next day to find the games players dropped by like 33% and it took too long to get into a match. I ended up doing something else and then forgot about the game for 3 years. I just remembered it today and wow I miss this game, this game is better than overwatch in my opinion. It was misunderstood and it ended up dying out. I have never been this sad about a game.

I was so hyped for battleborn when it was announced, I bought it a month after release, got gold on all the parts in the campaign, and unlocked all the non dlc characters all within the month. I was noticing the queue times for multiplayer get longer literally by the day and it crushed me
You shouldve mentioned the game's Pros...the distinctive and awesome classic Gearbox humor, and the really enjoyable story missions (something overwatch was missing and still is)

I would have to disagree with the point that No Man's Sky is dead. While I myself haven't even played the game, I have somewhat kept an eye on it. Since launch, they've released free updates that greatly improve the gameplay. They've added base building, land vehicles etc. With its upcoming release on Xbox, a major update will come to the game which will add multiplayer.
I have to agree. And since the focus isn't on the multiplayer, it can be evergreen and can turn around -- unlike Battleborn which lives or dies by its in-the-moment active player base. NMS has improved considerably since launch and while I can't say it's a $60 title, it's a decent little procedural exploration game with an interesting story.

I mean yes there are games with basicly 0 players but only 2k players is allso quite small if you compare it with any other games that are even older than no mans sky and still have a larger playerbase. (examples: gmod, csgo, gtav (I know im kinda just nitpicking multiplayer games so heres some singleplayer examples: Fallout 4, cities skylines, Fallout: New Vegas and house flipper))
MarkosH-EST if the delveloper is still keeping the updates, clearly they don't think of it as a failure. Meaning it hit the target audience an was recieved well. Maybe it was never intended for the 200k people it had at launch. Maybe they thought that 2k people was the kind of people they wanted it to be for.
I enjoy both, but I love the fact Battleborn had a story mode with interesting levels and bosses. Plus, both games had great lore, so Battleborn had that going for it too. Overwatch needs a second game for a story, while Battleborn did it fine.

I remember watching reviews for both Battleborn and Overwatch when they both just came out. I went to gamestop, rewatched the IGN reviews (idk why i watch them lol) and held BOTH in my hands and kept looking over them back to front wondering which one to get. I went home with Overwatch. And its one of my most beloved games ever.
Besides, no matter what you say you cant beat a price tag of 0 dollars

You make a good point when you say that they're actually very different, but that the advertising dictated otherwise. I didn't understand that battleborn was a Moba until way after I knew about it. So I, like many, assumed that it was the same idea as Overwatch

This was my first ever shooter and I didn't have a phone or a computer I played Xbox I didn't know the devs stoped updating I remember always waiting for a new update maybe a new hero but it never came and to this day I still love battleborn with all my heart and if someone can save it please save it please

As of February 2020, the walmart in my town still has a single copy of Battleborn for $13
I have battleborn, and I've always liked the game. Ofc OW is way more enjoyable, but I think you forgot, or didn't mention a important aspect. Battleborn is unstreamable. There's 2 much info and colors in the screen to viewers to understand, hell even the player most times is a bit lost. On the other hand, and this you've mentioned, when you die you have to slowly and clunkyly come back, creating an uninteresting moment during streams. OW, on the other hand, is more user friendly even suffering a bit from the same problem, but in a much lower degree, and with much straightforward action.
Glad you took your time to answer. I was talking regarding the viewer, not the player, and the reality is quite obvious, no one watched the game, quickly the streamers moved to a more profitable one. You may like it or not, it was what happened. I've played the game several hours, I know what it is. It was my favourite game at that time.
DrIvanRadosivic the story missions where quite straightforward, they play like a regular shooter. To be fair you can still enjoy those, and even the pve simulations are interesting enough in the main mode. IA is not the best, but far from being bad. Most reviews of this game where positive. In fact I believe most pvp oriented games, even mobas, rely a bit in exposure in midi, and battleborn was not able to get that, even after being free to play.
DrIvanRadosivic, the reviews and general consensus at launch were that battleborn was a good game, and that was the reason I've bought it. People start to compare it to OW just after OWs release. There were some exceptions ofc, but they were not the norm.

DrIvanRadosivic, I think we are not understanding ourselves. We are speaking of different stuff. I do not need to do that, I already have the game and I like it. I was just trying to say the reasons I think the community didn't grow, just that.
The game had solid reviews, a big enough starting point (12k users), and solid gameplay.
Several worse games, like destiny for instance, have grown more even with worse reviews and gameplay.
So, what's left? Why didn't the game grow? Your point is that people shit it, and that's not true, even in this post mortum vídeos they always speak good things about the game. And now we came to my point, you may think that is unfair, but sometimes gaming is unfair, and in reality people just did not engage with the game.

The FPS/MOBA mix is actually quite fun when done right. I've never tried BattleBorn (didn't even know it existed before seeing this video), but one of most fun I've had with any shooters was with Super Monday Night Combat, which is instantly what comes to mind when reading about BattleBorn. Super MNC never really took off and the devs abandoned it (though they wouldn't admit it) pretty early on, but damn was it fun. Part of the issue with making a MOBA type game (doesn't matter if it's an FPS or any other style) is that if it doesn't launch with good numbers, it's pretty much doomed from the start because of matchmaking. Super MNC was great, but waiting 15 minutes for a single match was horrible.
How do you make this whole video with no mention that battleborn had a full length campaign??
I played the Open Beta's the whole week and I enjoyed it much more than Overwatch.
9:17 Those are all story maps. There are 12 multiplayer maps, but the lack of maps is made up for by all the builds and characters. Battleborn to this day still has more characters than Overwatch and each on can be modified to fill a different role on a team, as well as having plenty of room for individual theorycrafting with gear and helix levelling. Additionally, all 12 of said maps (29 if you count PvE maps) are well designed, visually appealing, and unique as long as you take more than 5 mins of gameplay to look at them. The wiki you are using has been abandoned, and is full of misinformation and incomplete pages. A more accurate reasource is Lowlidev for anyone who wants to learn something about the game.

As much as I agree with your points I think it's really funny how a game that failed had a lot of showtime in a recently released movie titled Ready Player One; if you pay attention in the background you can see characters such as Ambra, Benedict, Shayne & Aurox, and Attikus

Like myself, I'm sure a lot of other Battleborn fans would've had this vid suggested to them without ever seeing your channel and we've seen plenty of these videos where people half arse their research and put out the same misinformation we've seen over and over.
I wanted to give you this feedback because when doing vids about niche games like this, you can gain a lot of respect from the game's real fans. If you were better informed you could've made this video stand out among all of the other half arsed "Why Battleborn failed" and I wouldn't have hesitated to subscribe.
Although I think it's great that Battleborn is still being talked about, it's very clear you didn't play Battleborn much or at all and just spent a bit of time researching it. There is a lot you are totally wrong about here and some huge things that just weren't mentioned.
1. Most of the issues were caused by 2K and at least some of the devs in gearbox really weren't happy with how it was all handled. The devs wanted a free to play, and they wanted a later release date. The game was clearly unfinished and it really felt complete after the Winter update, which changed so many things some people consider it as the "real" release. 2K were also the reason F2P wasn't handled well, and you DIDN'T EVEN MENTION the free to play business.
2. "It lost over 90% of its original playerbase in the first 6 or 7 months." This only applies to PC. PS4 and xBox retained an active playerbase for at least a year and it still isn't dead there. Most people stopped playing PC first because it was terribly optimised, barely ran for many people. After that people stopped being able to find matched because it was heavily region locked to your steam download region so all of the smaller regions died from people changing their DL region to US or France or some shit. THAT is what cause most PC players to stop playing, although a very surprising amount switched to console. Maybe Overwatch was the primary cause for console doing bad, but it was definitely secondary for PC.
3. "Overwatch was simply a better game." Maybe this just pisses me off because it was the mantra for people who have never played Battleborn, but almost everyone I know who has played both points to the level of depth and content of Battleborn vs the great gameplay and polish of Overwatch, or something along those lines. "Battleborn simply wasn't as fun to play" makes much more sense.
4. "Lack of content" Did you run out of time to research when you got to this bit? Ask most Battleborn fans why they preferred it to Overwatch and they would say "It has more content". One of the only things you can say for certain Battleborn had over Overwatch is that there was more content, although the quality of it is subjective. You say there wasn't enough content to keep people playing but the 5 DLC STORIES they released kept the PvE community pretty solid through a lot of 2017 and the PvP community seemed to stay pretty engaged with the 5 NEW CHARACTERS that were released every couple months, even with the tiny leftover PC community that took 8 MONTHS to drop from 150 to 92 players after the numbers stabilised. It properly died off after F2P failed.
5. "6 maps at launch" All you said on the topic of content was that the game launched with 6 "fairly average" maps. Yes it had 6 PvP maps, fair enough that you don't mention the 8 story mode maps and Prologue map that were in the base game...
But then you show an incomplete list of base game and DLC PvE maps, and flash up on screen that there are still only 8 maps today? WHAT? DID YOU DO ANY RESEARCH!? Was the wiki your ONLY REFERENCE? It took me 20 seconds to go into the game's private modes and check the maps and there are now 12 PvP maps, plus a couple event maps. So since launch they more than doubled the amount of PvP maps, not to mention they gave 5 DLC story maps.

When your talking about PvP maps than you don't count single player maps.after you finish the single player your going to spend most of your time in multiplayer and the single player maps aren't in multiplayer so saying the game only had 6 maps is correct since we wouldn't count overwatch's tutorial as a map.

Two year later, today, Battleborn is still the most addictive and most amazing game in the world, it is the combination of RPG and MOBA. I still enjoy every moment of it even after two years of playing it.

First of all I love battleborn I like it more than OverWatch I'm not saying the OverWatch is a bad game I think it's overrated but I do play it got it as a Christmas present but my own opinion I feel like gearbox did a better job on the game have a story mode what's up to 4-player co-op I even two players split screen Co-op the characters were more interesting they actually have a backstory in the game you don't have to go online and look up Lords and other stupid shit and the game's not completely dead I plan on PS4 I can get online no problem
When people say its dead they only look at how it did on steam i've yet to see anyone talk about how it did on PS4 and Xbox One when referring to Battleborn's success. Also playing Overwatch nowadays is like being part of the purge at least that's what it feels like whenever i play a match full of toxic players
DrIvanRadosivic back in 2016 I played the game a lot on ps4 I would literally have a book in my hand while the game is matching it takes up to 15- 20 min to find a game

@DrIvanRadosivic pro players put in thousands of hours into the game trying to master it yet get steamed roll and spawned camp of by a team of 5 players while one person pushes a payload for 2 whole minutes.
The last time I played PvP in Battleborn, i got put up against a team of 5 players, all 5 of them max level, and 3 of them using the same DLC character...

They said it was gonna have offline gameplay. It was my first preorder as well so i just returned it on launch day for a full refund of my preorder due to that promise not being fulfilled
You have interesting definitions of "failure." Yes, Hello Games probably made a profit off of No Man's Sky, but they also dug a huge hole they will have to climb out of whenever they want to release a new game.

I highly recommend not playing overwatch, there are better options for way cheaper, namely TF2.
i loved lawbreakers and battle born allot but overwatch does give free updates and it updates at least once a month
id play battle born if it had more players i wait so long in a queue and i payed for the most expensive edition of it
BlackScape I have played around 1000 hours of Overwatch, so my opinion is probably closer to the truth. Overwatch is an amazing game for only £30. It has an amazing art style, feels really good to play, the characters are amazing and all of them are unique. Overwatch is also almost constantly updated, with bugs being fixed within days of them being found, aswell as 3 hero's, new maps and new game modes being released per year. Also, there are a ton of seasonal events, with their own separate gamemodes, and blizzard adds more events/ improves on the old ones every year. It is also an amazing competitive game, and is mostly balanced. Some people say that the community is very toxic, and this is true to some extent, however it is in any online competitive game, and there are a lot of really nice people too. This was enhanced by the team matchmaking system they just added, which proves that they do constantly update Overwatch with tons of new content. I would STRONGLY advise playing it, please don't listen to the haters of the game who have not even tried it.
Ps: All updates to the game are free, and the only purchable items in the game are loot boxes,which give you cosmetics only, and loot boxes are earned every time you level up. Purchasing them is not necessary, infact I have earned over 1000 loot boxes in my time, each containing 4 cosmetic items.
DrIvanRadosivic No art style is going to be 100% unique. I agree, the community is quite toxic at some times, but only really in lower ranks. Blizzard updates Overwatch a lot more than other games do. Credits are easily earnt in loot boxes, as you get credit boxes inside as well as credits for any duplicate skins. And there is nothing to work towards? Of course their is, it is a competitive game, you work to get better so you can get a higher rank. You obviously have no clue what you are talking about man.

Uh, no, it doesn't. Blizzard doesn't release numbers for their games, so it's hard to say, but it IS easy to see that numbers have fallen rapidly over the last couple of months. The "millions" that you quote are people who have EVER played the game. That's the number Blizzard wants you to believe in, but it doesn't represent the number of players who are currently playing right this second. People are very displeased with how the game is right now. Took my 4 minutes to get into a quick play game the other day. Went to TF2 and specified a specific map and game mode and got in within 20 seconds.
Besides, TF2 is still going strong and it's 11 years old. Overwatch is BARELY 2 years old. There's no way in hell it's gonna have the player base TF2 has today in 9 more years lol.

Some of the most prominent TH-camrs/twitch streamers have come out and voiced complaints against the game in its current state. If you think the game is in one of the best states it's ever been in, then the game must have always been bad lol. Again though, Blizzard doesn't release numbers as they would rather claim the game has millions of players, whereas people would much rather know what the ACTIVE number of players looks like. Not to mention the massive chunk of audience Fortnite stole from Overwatch.

I bought both games on release date and I played both of them non-stop at the time. its sad seeing a game die off and videos like these reminds me that there were people who did like this game at one point.

single player games cannot be dead.... dead can be used for multiplayer games that rely solely on a player base to keep it alive. In the case of culling 2, people didn't play it and now you cannot even play the game because others are not playing it. That is considered dead. No Man's Sky is at its core, a single player game. You don't need any amount of players to keep it "alive". As long as somebody plays it or even wants to play it, they can because it is not dependent on servers to keep it afloat. No Mans Sky has a huge update coming NEXT week and many people are excited including me. The game has a moderately large fanbase so calling it dead, even in your definition of it, does not apply.

Man i remember playing the battleborn beta with my old friends. I loved it i really wanted to get the game. But at the time my parents wouldn't buy it for me, now that i was an adult with money i wanted to buy the game for myself, you could imagine my sadness when i found out the game was shut down.
Overwatch never did and still doesn't deserve it's fame. I'm quite happy to see it's player count dropping drastically. I'm not saying Battleborn deserved the attention and **** sucking that Overwatch got, but it deserved a lot more then it got.

Fulcrum 67 First off, Overwatch does have constant controversy. Like for example, right now there is controversy over the new character being a Hamster rather then a human who can represent some group in the world. Second, the Devs did care and listen to issues. Kinda the main reason there were tons of balance updates among other things that came to the game before it's final caring update last fall. Also, to sweeten that, they did try to save the game rather then do nothing. They made the multiplayer free for everyone. The More you know! 🤔
I loved Battleborn. Got Master of Caldarius and around that time the que times went from instant to like 5 mins. You could tell it was dying.
