- The culling is a battle royale game that was created to try to revolutionize the entire battle royale genre. The game became extremely popular on both PC and Xbox, and people loved it. But the version of the game that we see today is not the same as it used to be. The game is dead and there is no hope for a resurrection.

@@moody5267 And yet, it actually seems to be accurate when it comes to a number of gamers: change the core gameplay too much, and a lot of people go "this is shit because it's not like how it originally was", but if you keep the core gameplay the same, then people go "this is shit because it's the same thing over and over".

@Adrian Sigales the culling already had around 5 minute que times before it crashed so this would split the community further and nobody would be able to find a game, if they had around 10k players then sure, but on AVERAGE they had around a thousand to two thousand

@Adrian Sigales Sure but how many times do you do that? Especially in a constantly evolving battle royale style game. Then from a development perspective you have multiple different versions of the same game that all need to be updated and patched. Then you need to consider which version is actually popular and actually making any money, not to mention multiple different versions of the game may confuse new players.
Sure we can look at stuff like OSRS and WoW and say "look they have old versions that work just fine" but these games have been around waaaay longer than The Culling and they have more definitive points between "old school" and " new school". The devs released a massive content update, some people hate it some people like it, but it was hardly anything that required 2 separate versions.
Shape the game as the community wants it to be is the biggest mistake any company could make, hear the community, dont get orders from them
Zaiko LeBolsh not the worst mistake one could make. There's worse. But the best thing is to give the community a moderate amount of power. But not full control. To add something they need to make sure more that a bunch of players want it not just one or two. If enough want it then put it in. And if a bunch of complaints come in after about it consider trying to fix it or remove it. Everything is good in moderation
SVER ofc that's why said "hear the community, don't receive orders from them", there is a point where people with weird ideas and some renown can end up damaging a proyect that is not their own, developers should check ideas from the community, but think about the game first, it has to be enjoyable for everyone(or the target audience) not just for a few weebs that wanted a katana, just o give an example
I used to play runescape when i was younger. Recently like 1yr ago i started playing again. They have somethiny very similar.to this the dev team puts out in game.polls and the players pick what updates to.do or not.to do.
Which makes this bad is theres two groups of players in runescape Pvmers and Pkers. They dont like eachother because pkers pk the pvmers and what not. They dont understand that they need eachother. Anyways what im getting at is i totally agree with you. Giving the.community.power is a bad idea. The 2nd comment says that you should.give them.some.power. i agree to an extent. But.i think.they should.only.have a say

Thats why i.dislike developers who are too scared to make their own decisions. They shoulr be like a president. Have advisors but ultimately you make.the final decision. Plain and simple
Thanks for.listening ive had alot of.experience with community driven games and it never works out. Something always goes wrong. Alot.of.times.too its great in the beginning. But in the end it fails.

The biggest problem with the culling was the community not knowing what it wanted. Some of the community wanted the combat to be faster, some slower, some didnt want it changed, so no matter what the devs did it wasnt good enough. Had the devs just gone with their original ideas it would still be alive.

I don't think so, I think the fact that the game plummeted in popularity once they changed the combat meant that the vast majority of players were satisfied with the combat AS IT WAS.
Lesson learned : don't listen to stupid 9 yr old kids
it was perfect till june 2016 after that it felt apart .. blocking was useless since someone attacked into block was like 0,2 sec stun time and not like 1 sec when you could get one free hit coz you predicted the move right.. when xbox came they made the skill gap between players smaller and that is the real reason it died.. changes into combat.. not weapons or skins.. changes into easy to learn , hard to master combat to potato attackers who has better weapon win.. i have 700+ h in the game and played it since early alpha in march 2016

My biggest gaming disappointment. It was fun and the developers seemed to care, it had a lot of potential and I was expecting it to be big but the updates really took a lot of the fun away. My first experience with a early access situation like this.

I would say the death of the culling was caused by the update, where they changed the combat system from : ROCK,PAPER,SCISSORS TO ROCK,ROCK,ROCK,ROCK,ROCK,ROCK aka, just spam the attack it won't stun you.

I remember watching a person "stream" The Culling once like 4 months ago, they waited 20 minutes for someone to join them, and the only time they got to play with someone was when they told their friends to install the game and play it with them, because there was literally 3 active players.
It died because they changed the most important thing in the game “combat” it used to be shove,block or hit

It’s sad that this game died I only found out recently and this video thankfully shed a lot of light on the topic me and my friends would play this game quite often it was something different than fortnite and pubg and so we found it really enjoyable I remember quite a few times we’d try to get into public matches and face each other in groups or solos and we all had an extreme amount of fun but a few months back me and a friend redownloaded the game and found that the servers didn’t work and now I know why so I really appreciate the information provided and I hope that one day this game might get brought back and fixed so I can have these wonderful experiences again

Firenyth It released when H1Z1 was still a giant with cotton legs, undefeated by a lack of competition rather than supremacy (as it was soon to be revealed), battle royale was pretty much H1Z1 and modded servers in various survival games and died when PUBG was still a mode in ARMA rather than a game. As one of the very early players I can say it had a very high chance of becoming a successful game, but weapon rebalance killed everything (25k players to less than 1k in 2 months)
But has far less content and depth
it was boring becuase there was not enough real competition, most the player base was garbage besides like a good 200 people who kept winning all the time.
If you don't like the loop chances are you don't like competitive style games. I played the same maps in counter strike for like 10 years. It's kinda the point.
I played the culling when it first came it and it was enjoyable, I got bored with it and watching this video makes me sad to see a game with such potential just die. Either way good video Robokast, your new content is great!

I really enjoyed this game, but my brother was way more into it than I was..when we saw that the servers were shutting down me and my brother was very upset...we use to play one on one private matches and he would most of the time win and I would now and then...sometimes our friends would join us in a private match and of course they would be better than us at the game....the jun we had..too bad the game failed...it just sucks to see a game with this much potential just fall flat like that..it really sucks...
You also forgot to mention that they removed essetial perks and all airdrops. The perks they put into kill rewards, the airdrops were changed to only have a meele weapon and armor and the FUNC gain for crafting has been reduced to a minimum from all sources except killing people. Because of THAT you were not able to play any playstyle except hunting for kills with meele combat - which they also patched to not be fun anymore.
No more safe players who just farm until they can afford their Katana. No more trappers who turn the whole Arena into a deathtrap. No more Leg Day Speedy Spear harbringer of death. No more Dynamite Flinging maniacs. No more BrassKnuckle "I punch you in the face and its good night for you". No more GoldenArm dipshts who just throw everything they have to avoid the hard to master meele combat. No more team play by having one assault Airdrop and a Support Airdrop. NO MORE USE TO PLAY THE GAME.
THAT is what killed the Culling for me.
This is more an outsiders perspective to why the culling died I find it kind of interesting since the community's reason why the game died and an outsiders reason why the game died is completely different since they have to rely on just info they could find
But its all things combined - also they fixed it for now

I think they should have done that earlier, they would have had a better chance of player growth. Now there are games like pubg and fortnite out, the Culling wouldn’t exactly benefit from being bought and developed by a new company as much as it would have a little while after it died.

Dude, all of your videos hurt a lot, I mean, since "why *insert game here* died" or "why *insert game here* failed" so many truth and memories about the game, THIS HURTS, but keep with the good work on your videos, I love them.
Well this sounds like a “road to hell is paved with good intentions” situation
This was my favourite game for a while -- combat was simple: scissors, paper, rock -- with a variety of weapons that all behaved differently and offered different styles of play.
Basically, you hit, block, or shove, and if you misjudge, you're punished. It was all about reading your opponent, which I think worked very well. Weapons dealt bleed, slow, or even combo damage. There were also guns which were expensive and very limited in ammo.
Presentation was amazing as well, loved the announcer and the atmosphere the game had. I would love if you brought it back, as it was originally -- it had sooo much potential.

@@primius562 basically, there's a ticket you can use to play rounds. based on what i've heard when you first get the game, you get 25 tickets and receive a free ticket everyday you log in. you use 1 ticket each time you play, if you win, your ticket is back, if you lose, good bye ticket.
if you run out of tickets after losing so many times. you either have to wait for tomorrow, or buy ticket packs for 3, 5 or 7$ (iirc), or you could also buy free play passes for 7days or 30days which allows you to play indefinitely as long the pass is active.
Great video. I played this game back in the day. I never got bored, it was easy and quick to play and lots of fun. I think there was a big pressure from big streamers or their fans. Maybe it was also the problem of the company being too small. It is really sad. One of the best games I have played. Thumbs up for you work.

DOSTBROOK devs may care. But they feel it's over. And also they need cash. If the game isn't generating enough revenue and if cash is tight they may have to try something else or risk falling

When you got the game you could still play online with many other people, so it was worth that price.
Now the servers are gone and there is literally nothing to do but fight bots all day, so its (arguably) worth 6 bucks now.

9:50 onwards is incorrect. The servers were never shut down, in fact the picture of the "server issues" that you used was uploaded June 4th 2017, months before Culling left Xbox game preview. The multiplayer never forced you to play against bots aswell, the review refers to being forced to offline mode, since there is nobody online.
It's either 2 things:
-Devs don't hear community and fucks shit up.
-Devs hear community too much and fucks shit up.

Looking back at this video the culling is probably gonna get a stronger community
what they should have done is created new maps with weather/hazard effects for example ice bio where you can't stay outside too long without protective equipment because you will taking damage and slowly freeze to death. Others could be fire or lava, secret lad with mutant abominations. e.g.

I loved the OG Ace of Spades. It was the best version of the game. The current class based version is complete utter crap. I remember playing on random servers making friends, while digging trenches and building forts trying to take the enemy flag. Good times man. 😢

The name of the classic rework is *OpenSpades,* its uses the same servers as the old pixel/voxel one so it can be played on both versions on the same place.

And that my friend (as much as I love DBD) is the biggest flaw with the game. they don't actually change much of anything, for example people were complaining that games were too fast and gens were being done too fast so the added the Pig but what about the other killers? They complained stealth was too powerful so they added the Doctor and his perks but it didn't really change much unless you had the Doctors teachable perks. Those perk spaces could be used for other more interesting things. I don't like having to run BBQ 'n Chili and Hex:ruin every single game just to be able to do anything. I'd like them to actually change something like increase time for gens to be done so I can make more interesting build like running all of the Doctors character specific perks (like Calm, Restraint etc also Doctor is 1 of my favorite killers).
