    I built my own, since the ones like this I found were just not what I wanted. Most are too "universal" and too heavy. I bought square to=ube steel at a local metal selling company, also some channel aluminum and angle-iron, used carriage bolts and Nylock nuts, even added taillights from an auto parts store. Connected those via the 4-pin flat connector. Hired a welder to assemble the steel for $40, and a little paint, it was down the road. Holds my little 80 or my Yamaha XT225, and I can even stand on it WITH the bike on it, and it is sturdy, doesn't even rock. The bike ties to the hitch loops beside the receiver, and to the 2" sq. tube that extends beyond the U-channel jsut under 2 feet. I strap the tires to the channel so it won't jump out, and used some channel to "house" the lights, as protection from any impacts breaking them. Works great, weighs no more than 20 pounds. Cost me about $120-140 in parts and labor, and I bought enough channel for both a full length track AND a full length ramp. Ramp sits loosely on the end of the ramp, with a simple bolt as a "pin", then stores on the rack, just inside and up against the main channel, with two permanently attached bolts, with wing nuts, flat washers and lock washers. Beyond that, more stuff is just getting fancy.
    But I'm a cheapskate, and did not count my hours. This rack looks good, too. Most folks wouldn't want t build their own, but "ah's a injunear."

    Nice video. I have the older model (gray color) which weighs lots more. For my full-size gm truck, it puts my tongue weight to the limit. I normally carry a BMW r1200gs and sometimes a Ducati 1198. Because of my 600lbs tongue weight limit, I opted in getting a heavy-duty 2.5 hitch with a 1k lbs rating. Not cheap but a true piece of mine for me. For my Harleys or other bikes. I use a Kendon dual full-size trailer. I tend to use the mototote WAY more than the trailer. Just more convenient. Remember the rear light kit. In California, police will mess with you if you do not have them.

    Thanks for that. Iv probably traveled well over 20,000km with my Ducati on the back (mostly for demos) and haven't had a single issue with tight bends at speeds. But its always wise to slow it down a bit when driving (normal speed limit speeds are slow enough). I personally haven't used mine off road(as I don't have a dirt bike) But plenty of people buy them solely for off road use and we get nothing but positive feedback.

    Thank you for the outstanding video, very informative. Coincidentally, I'll be picking the same model up to tow my 848 EVO Corse. Cheers!

    This design is so nimble. Love it. I have the older one. The older one is built like a tank with an excellent paint that is the best in the business. I use my carrier to transport my two BMW r1200 gs, Ducati 1198 and RC51. Now I am trying to see if I can transport my Harley RK.

    Its a factory Mitsubishi class IV fitted to Mitsubishi Triton (Australian delivered). There is no bumpers on these models, just the rear step, which slots into a piece on the tow bar, which in turn attaches the the chassis(bolt goes threw rear step attachments, then tow bar frame, then onto the chassis. I believe some aftermarket tow bars dont come with the mount provided for rear step.

    That's the most comprehensive demo I've seen for a motorcycle carrier. Thank you! I noticed a bit of tilt as you were unloading the bike. How does it actually perform while on the move, especially while negotiating tight bends at speed? Have you tried that system off-road?

    Hi, sadly I don't think the 99 CRV has a very big towing capacity(maybe 1500kg max). if this is the case, then your tongue weight wont handle the load. For you to be able to carry your SV650, you would need a "min" off 2000kg towing capacity. This would give you a tongue weight of 200kg, which would handle the weight of your bike + carrier weight. If your not 100% sure what your towing capacity is, it should be written on your towbar somewhere or contact a Honda dealer. Hope this helps.

  • @fitzpat
    @fitzpat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Patrick the two weight numbers on my vin are 2360kg and 4460kg so subtracting one from the other will give me 2100kg and multiply 10% to get approx tongue value?

    I see a lot of people carrying 250 lbs bikes on their smaller cars (under 3000 lbs). If I adapt a high class hitch to a small car, do you think I could carry a regular size bike (say a 3100 lbs Prius with 135 hers-purrrs VS a 350 lbs CBR300)?

  • @nicerackdotcomdotau
    @nicerackdotcomdotau 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you only have a 300-350 pound max load on the tongue, that means your towing capacity is only 3000-35000 pounds, which means your vehicle isn't able to handle that size load and only capable of carrying a small dirt bike etc. You would need a heavy duty vehicle ie large SUV, 4X4 with a towing capacity of at least 5000 pounds.
    My Mitsubishi has a factory hitch which is rated at 5500 pounds, which is suited to the 4x4 vehicle.

      +Patrick Boyce, On most vehicles in Aussie, these type of racks (with motorcycle fitted) don't comply with "overhang limits", so are technically illegal. As far as I'm aware, the legal 'overhang limit' ..is 60% of the distance between front and rear axle centres, ..rearward from centre of rear axle ..and if any part of the rack or bike protrudes past 60%, cops can & will issue fines. I'm pretty sure this applies to all states in Aussie and, it would pay you to confirm with RTA.

    OK, nice installation. Once the Ducati is paid for, take your truck in for a set of polyurethane shackle and spring eye bushings. They'll take that HORRIBLE squeak out and tighten up the suspension in the rear. It can be a DIY job, too. Then redo the video and sell even more of your nice racks! ;)

      There are many things to consider when transporting a motorcycle. I have a land rover discovery 1 with a type IV with 2" Receiver. 6000 lbs GTW. However, the Proper trailer tongue weight can make the difference between a safe trailer towing experience and a dangerous journey. For my SUB THE WEIGHT IS ONLY 650LBS.

      Yeah, keep one hand on the front brake lever as you grunt and roll it up motor off, in neutral. Another way would be to have the bike in first, motor off, and use the clutch lever as a "brake".
      When the bike is on the rack, ALWAYS keep it in first gear. It minimizes risk of rolling should it get a little bit loose on the straps. Hang handlebar tie-downs from the bars, so you can grab them like reins of a horse, and then attach the lowers to the rack and snug each.

      Lol you COMPLETELY ignored his response. If the bike is in the back of the truck, you have less space for any gear you're taking with you. And this is much closer to the ground, easier to load. Or if you have a topper on your truck, the bike won't fit in the bed.
