    Great video. I've got thousands of miles on the same carrier, hauling a superbike as well. They are the perfect system for keeping room in the back of the truck for gear, and not having the expense of hauling or storing a trailer. As you stated, the proper size of hitch and carrier rating are a must.

    Okay, I know this is a pretty old video, but I'm so happy I found it! I've been designing a motorcycle carrier and am looking for a way to tie down just the wheels that won't scratch up the paint. I haven't been able to find anything that would work, so nearly gave up on it. But, those TyreFix straps are exactly what I've been looking for! I'm going get a set of them now.

      Informative and clearly presented! but no actal weight mentioned. We have a similar situation with a 2015 2 dr wrangler. Would like to pack a total payload of 500 lbs on a 2" receiver.

      The TyreFix straps go over each wheel and ratchet to the rings on the black cross-bars. I added the Canyon Dancer purely for stability (DON'T crank them down hard or you'll damage your forks). The cross bars will flex a little when you hit bumps, and you'll see your bike jiggle in the rear view mirror, but it's solid!

    I am glad i came across this video! I have a question for you though, well, actually 2. I will be heading out on a round-the-country road trip this spring... . as much as I'd like to do so on the bike alone, I'm pretty sure I'm not up to 11,000+ miles on the bike ... so I will be taking my new-to-me Chrystler Town & Country minivan (after being a daily rider for all of my adult life, believe me, its hard to even type the word mini-van!, but I purchased it last fall due to the amount of traveling i had coming up, and have put 10,000 miles on it in 5 months!).. anyway, back to the questions... for Numerous reasons, I will not do a trailer.. so the hitch carrier is the clear solution to take Max (my Suzuki SFV650/Gladius) with me.. which is a MUST on this trip. my first question is, is it possible to load the bike onto the carrier, once it is installed, by yourself? (I will be traveling alone). and secondly, you mentioned that the combined weight of your bike and the carrier came in under the tongue weight of the hitch receiver. THis is where I am running into some concerns. In looking at the heaviest-duty , classIII hitch reciever I can find to purchase for the Town and Country, the max tongue weight I can find is 350 lbs, with a "distributed tongue weight" of 500 lbs. Max's "Wet weight" according to suzuki specs, is 446 lbs. Any comments?

    I have a 2012 Triumph Bonneville (530#) and want to take it on my retirement travels with my 2016 RAV4 (150# tongue weight).
    Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but I don't see how carrying a load in excess of the tongue weight can be good for the operation of the vehicle.
    I just placed an order for a single bike folding trailer called the Ace by the USA Trailer Store.
    It weighs only 300# so it and my Bonnie won't come near exceeding the 1500# tow limit.
    Safe travels to all! 🙂

  • @pilotpete4614
    @pilotpete4614 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think we need to be careful interpreting "tongue weight". I'm not an engineer but I think max tongue weight is measured at the hitch ball and definitely not cantilevered 2 feet beyond the vehicle where the motorcycle sits. Secondly, I think the tongue weight is measured as a static load and not a dynamic load. This is important for a hitch carrier since that cantilevered load is continuously bouncing up and down. Compare this to a trailer where the hitch ball takes the static forces and the trailer wheels absorb and support the extreme forces resulting from bouncing around. In my case, I couldn't use my new Black Widow SMC 600 on my extended Sprinter truck because my own calculated "safe" load (roughly 330 lbs) was far less than the 500lb tongue weight limit due to the load being placed two feet out on the "arm". I was also concerned about the fact that the extended Sprinter does not have a full heavy frame supporting the hitch. The extension on the Sprinter looks pretty lightweight from underneath the vehicle, and the hitch receiver is 6 ½ feet behind the axle. Too much potential for failure for me to be comfortable.

    • @lard1892
      @lard1892 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea..these people putting on a unibody SUV...not good. I don't think I'd want 600 lb tongue weight on a unibody SUV. It's the same idea with new pickups....towing 12,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton pickup....not good. I always maintain distance anytime I see a SUV towing/hauling anything.

    • @ElaBellll
      @ElaBellll 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, something to keep in mind, however note that you can calculate the actual load if it were to be straight down on the hitch (because the hitch in itself is a lever arm) and you can easily determine if it is safe or not. In addition there is often a safety factor of at least 1.5 in systems like this, so if your tongue weight is adequate and your carrier does not have an overly lengthy arm, it will probably be OK.

    For a normal car the vertical max load is often 70kg, when it can easily tow 1,5 ton trailer. I am sure in all over EU ( and probably anywhere) police can stop you and give you a ticket for not respecting the maximum limits specified by the constructor. And it's not 5% more, but more around 300%...

  • @RassieKariuki
    @RassieKariuki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! did this actually work. The forces acting on the hitch are crazy. There are things called moments of a force. Moment of force = F x d. That d is what I'm talking about. You need to consider the distance from the hitch to the bike COG otherwise the torque (Nm) on the hitch could get pretty high. But that's not the problem, the problem is the rotational mass because the bike COG is either on one side of the hitch or will shift to either side as the car bounces around. I doubt the hitch properly reinforced to withstand high moments of inertia (rotational inertia). Tongue weight is purely vertical force acting at a distance (d) from the hitch. I doubt the test hitches by tipping trailers over to test the rotational strength.

    You're a very brave man to have that weight hanging off the back of the car without any supports. You're not considering the to and fro movement, or the bouncing as you drive over bumps - this is a metal fatigue experiment in its crudest form. Towing a trailer has a completely different effect on a tow bar, where the vertical load is often limited to 70kg, or so.

    Hello m y friend. Thank you for such an informative and straightforward video. Question? I am moving from Boston to Miami in two weeks and I am planning to rent a car (one way only) to bring a few small boxes with my stuff. I will need to bring my Yamaha 650 ER-6n with me. Therefore, what car would you recommend me to rent? I also notice you your car has a DUAL hint receiver and I had not seen those before. Thank you in advance

    I'd like to see someone pack a 500 lb (max payload) MC on the back of a 2 dr JK wrangler.. the receiver appears to be strong enough.. 🤔

    It’s critical to understand your car’s tongue weight rating before carrying your bike. My BMW X1 had a max tongue weight of 250lbs and since my bike is over 400lbs this could be a bad scenario.

      i drive an X1 as well. Glad im reading this.. i added a hitch and will tow an motorcycle trailer to the track.

      you're an idiot if you think 250lbs will make or break a 4000lbs car.

    Good review. What's the height of the tow hitch to the ground ? I have a similar aftermarket hitch and I'm concerned about ground clearance and sag issues. The carrier looks like it's not that high off the ground. Have you measured it? Have you had ground clearance problems?

    Thank you for this excellent video, may I ask what was that long dark grey extra tray you attached right at the end? It looked like another track for a second motorcycle, but I doubt that since it was only attached by you with two wingnuts?

    Does the tongue weight on your vehicle matter? Or is it just what the hitch can carry? I’ve been told that my heels tongue weight is 200 but I’m getting a trailer curt trailer hitch installed and the tongue weight for it is 525. The motorcycle I’m trying to put back there is a Honda cb300f so about 350lb and the rack will be around 50lb still 125lb under the limit. I just want to know if the people telling me that me Jeep won’t handle it are right and I shouldn’t waste my money or if I can get it. I have a 2018 Jeep Renegade latitude.
    Edit- it will be me and maybe my brother going and picking it up for a 7 hour drive back. Nothing else in the vehicle other than fuel.

    Hey! So I have a JL Wrangler with the two package. It comes with the class two hitch, and while I’m only using the carrier to drive about 10 miles tops, the tongue weight is too much for the class II hitch recommendation. My question is what hitch did you get to allow that much tongue weight. I haven’t had much luck in my search.

      @@Dutchman0 Good to know. I actually was able to find a class III hitch yesterday with 675lb tongue weight, so I think I'll be good. Thanks for the info!

    Hey, Love the Ducati and am about to check out more vids on your channel. Just wanted to let you know that there is a channel called Auto Accessories that has copied your video, put their own intro on it and don't link your channel at all. I had to search for a few min to find your channel so that i can check out some of your other content.
