      You can take square tubing and welded it in between the two ( future blinkers) post, and add some more blinkers and/or brake lights to it. advice from an ex-driver more the lights, the merrier.

    Add a motorcycle wheel lock chock bolt down or weld so will lock your bike in a upright position for one man operation, and also use a wider ramp board. You have a great idea by the way.

    Ive been wanting to see one in person, does it sway when turning ? Looks scary dropping the bike since it connects only a 2x2 tube

    Put some guides on the ramp sides.Makes it easier to load and unload without the bike rolling off the side of the ramp.Great work you did.Can you make one for me LOL

    Thanks for the video. Ive been watching a few videos of people making these carriers themselves, and had a few questions that no one seems to be mentioning in their videos. How much max weight can the carrier can support? Would insurance cover accident involving a custom made motorcycle carrier? Does making a custom motorcycle carrier violate any laws? Seems like a pretty dangerous thing for people to be making off to the side so I was just wondering.

  • @Geoff_G
    @Geoff_G 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great job on the build! I would caution away from possibly just bolting it together as you mention if someone doesn't know how to weld. It definitely needs to be welded. With the low cost, just buy double the amount of metal (or buy some/get some scrap from a metal recycler) and lay down some practice beads.

  • @aguiristante
    @aguiristante 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pretty cool. How did you figure out that the main beam would be strong enough not to bend down with the weight and the bouncing of the bike on bad roads?

  • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
    @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've wondered about these carriers, but I just don't like the fact that it is all being supported by a single 2" tube, even if the receiver hitch assembly itself can support the weight. Supposedly, the receiver hitch in my Dodge is a Class 4 and can handle a 1200 lb trailer tongue weight, so if I was so inclined, I could build a receiver hitch carrier for my Harley Road King (800 lbs), but I just don't trust that one piece of steel to not twist. If there were two more receiver hitches under there (one on each frame rail), I think that would be sturdy enough to design a bike carrier around.
    One thing you might want to consider to make yours a bit more sturdy is to weld steel bars from the bottom of the center support up to the corner formed by the angle iron (that forms the platform for the bike) and the side pieces of square tubing that you have your tie down rings attached to. This will help prevent any twisting between the center support and the platform which could result in a failed weld eventually.

    you could also go to harbor freight and get one of the 4x8 folding trailers for 299, put 30 into mesh to put on the floor of it and load the bike that way, I have one I traded 2 Sony 12s for, and have used it for both mine and the wife's bike. you could fold it and chain it to your luggage rack on top of your Durango when you get somewhere that you worry about theft or parking..

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A trailer is usually easier than an hitch carrier or the back of a pickup, but there's always a trade off regardless of what you choose. With a bike on a trailer, you will be needing to find parking lots where there are two spots facing each other with nothing between them so that you can drive straight through and take up both spots. This often means parking at the far end of a WalMart type parking lot. With a hitch carrier, you might be able to park in a single car parking space, possibly backing up so that the bike and carrier overhangs the grass. Also, with a trailer, you might find yourself paying extra for some of the toll roads. Plus, many states require you to register and pay taxes on your trailer each year and perhaps even have it inspected each year.
      A pickup bed if convenient, but if it is a model that has been produced within the last 15 years, the bed height might be so much that you will need a long ramp so that the angle between the ramp and the bed is not so great that you end up scraping the bottom of your bike. I have a 6 ft long by 3 ft wide ramp for my pickup and it will not work with any my street bikes. It won't work with my lawn tractor either -- the mowing deck gets stuck. It works with my ATV and dirt bike though.

    How do you keep the bike from tipping over. You mentioned you strap the bike down to the straps to the left, or furthest away from the rear of the vehicle which would prevent the bike from going towards the car. What about when you step on the gas from a light. the bike is going to fly towards the car behind you correct? Show a video of yourself driving with this attached please.

      It will probably depend upon where you are on whether the cops will bother you. I've been stopped ONCE by a cop when I was on a road trip and had a cargo carrier on the back of my Jeep where the trunk on the cargo carrier blocked the license plate. I didn't get a ticket -- he probably was just using it as an excuse to pull me over so that he could see if there was anything else he could get me on.

    Its all depends on your tow hitch down force capacity. Im about to post a new video with the same bike that was loaded on it. My friend put the hitch on his dodge ram pick up and it was fine. I live in Va and i ve driven to bike week in SC and back. No problems. My next buuld I am going to use bolts and weldung on the main support. Just for added safety. If you need some help I can send you my exact measurements. Bigbandit007@gmail.com.

      Just because it is home made doesn't mean it isn't safe. That's the point of DIY not paying a box store for it and doing it right yourself. Nothing he showed screams to me unsafe. Retail is nice but some stuff you purchase is crap and comes out better and safer than anything you can get off a shelf.

    Won't work. The bikes weight will make the 1x square steel that hooks into the car, will twist and turn because the bikes weight is uneven front vs. back. This is not good.

      hedegaard8 So, what your saying is something that you see working. Doesn't work. O-kayyyyy. The main support in the middle is not 1in. Thanks for watching. Please sub.

      You're right, I was (partially) mistaken. I've now seen other videos where other people do the same thing and it seems legit. Its amazing then, that it does NOT turn&twist because of the uneven weight distribution. Just goes to show I can be proven wrong and learn something new. Sub? Sorry, not interested enough in your channel, though I do like a few videos already. Keep up the good work and thanks for taking the time to reply.

    someone trusts welded cantilevered structures... I do admire the enthusiasm though... however I would consider running a few numbers on that rack, because it will break

    Just heads up, in case no one has mentioned it. It is probably illegal to block your rear license plate, and at some point, you'll get the a$$h0le cop that will write you up for either no plate, obstructed plate, and possibly no plate light. Just saying, cause I've already been down that road.....
