I Entered A Trials Comp On My Pivot Shadowcat MTB - How Did I Do?

- It's been a while since I did a trials comp and I really wanted to try one on my Pivot Shadowcat so when this comp was held 20 mins from my house it was a no brainer to enter.
HUGE thanks to David and the crew of volunteers for their hard work in organising and setting out the comp and to all the parents and family members who observed!

I can highly recommend riders of all abilities to at least try out one comp, there's plenty of choice in difficulty and all bikes are welcome (as long as there's no motor). Comps are a fun challenge and trials in general is a great way to improve your riding skills for all disciplines so it's a win win.
Sadly there's not really one website I can recommend for info of all clubs out there but the guys at tartybikes.co.uk are friendly and might be able to point you in the right direction for your location.

Ali, you should make a video explaining the rules of a comp and what all the gates mean and how to navigate a section. I live in the US, where we don’t really have comps, and want to set something up with my friends. I just can’t find a good online resource explaining everything clearly.
August 5 and 6,2023 there’s a weekend of moto and bicycle trials in Manchester, Iowa USA 🇺🇸. There’s cash purses for both. There’s a range of skills from beginner to pro/champion and a nice atmosphere. Google it. You can find info online and people have videos posted. It is stumbling upon this comp - discovering trials- a few years ago that lead me to finding utube and Ali Clarkson.
USA is geographically huge so it makes competition opportunities difficult. I’m in the PNW and closest regular comp is 3-4 hours away in Canada.
Isn't it the dream, riding to an event, riding the event, even onto the podium - and back home, all on the same bike?!!

Nice work Ali! I love when you take the MTB out for trials and explain how you set up your suspension and such; it's so helpful since I only do MTB trials. I'd love to see more content like this and how you translate this to the trail.
Great watch as always. I went to watch a trial that was kind of close to me at hookwoods and was really impressed with all the riding, saw Charlie rolls in person ride unthinkable stuff and make it look easy .

Trials is only for big brain riders. After over 20 years riding, I still haven't even remotely understood the concept of choosing the right gates and all that. Cudos to all you trials riders!

Third after clearing everything but one section? Competition was pretty fierce this time.
About that, I didn’t want to mention anything unless it specifically came up as I don’t want to take anything away from the podiums but the results were shuffled around due to time penalties.
The comp was split into two halves, the morning had inter, expert and elite go first with the idea that the younger riders get to watch the advanced riders go first and get inspired.
The issue was we only had about two and a half hours to complete 15 sections and intermediate had the most riders so most of us ended up going over our time limit…you get minus ten points for every minute you go over.
I got minus 340 points (some riders got more!) which bumped my winning score down a couple of places.
Slightly disappointed but I’m there for fun and not to take things seriously so I’m not going to be bitter, it was still fun and that’s what counts

@@Ali_Clarkson that's a tad bizarre if it was effectively forced on the riders. I know it doesn't really matter for you but for the riders who are actively competing it must be a bit of a kick in the teeth...

Alistair, have you seen your bike? Entering a blue route with a red bike is almost as bad as wearing white socks with black shoes.
Also, funny how my Stumpy Evo is almost the same color, just a bit darker.

I found the narration audio really jarring at first - it sounds at odds (recorded in a small room? too much gating?) to the environment the video takes place in...
HOWEVER, the riding and video content is awesome, really enjoyed and I started to wonder what my problem with the audio was!
Excellent venue too, would love somewhere like that a few minutes from where I live in E.Kent.
My prediction before watching: squeeek, squeek, sqweee. Edit: The shock! No brake squeaks! The disappointment!
The squeaking is from rim brakes (with the rims ground and/or tarred).
