We kept our rescue gelding alive for the last three years of his life on a mash of alfalfa cubes soaked with Senior horse feed .It was soupy and he loved it .I added a joint supplement for his arthritis and it worked.He put on weight and was happy.We also gave him alfalfa hay and he consumed the leaves and his buddy would eat the rest.He could eat some grass so in summer he was put in the pasture.He was happy and kept his weight on cold rain made him shiver so on wet or cold days and nights he went in the barn with his buddy.Good luck he is so cute!
Oh my gosh..what a beautiful boy..but so skinny..thats the thing...they can have all the food they need but if they can't chew it due to teeth issues then that's how they starve in a field full of pasture..I hope he makes it

Aggressive dental care can exasperate and cause additional eating difficulties with aged teeth, worn and neglected over the years.Certainly, hooks etc must be taken care of but I have seen a vet file down old teeth until almost nothing was left. I kept my 38 year old gelding looking and feeling great by daily feedings of 4 smaller meals, that included specialty feed, alfalfa and Timothy pellets all soaked. It kept his gut working without overloading with 2 large meals. He was able to eat alfalfa and timothy hay, the only problem being able to get consistent bales due to hay shortages. By feeding him 4 meals a day, I was able to ensure balanced nutrition and enough calories even when the hay available was not the best texture for chewing purposes. Unfortunately he despised soaked hay, but loved soaked pellets. You obviously know what you are doing, just a word of caution to other owners of senior horses. Not all vets are good when it comes to dentals. Watch closely and ask questions! Best of luck bringing this old man back to a life of comfort and health. I said goodbye to my best friend in January of this year. Seniors will always have a special place in my heart.

Our vets are recommending fewer dental floats. They're excellent vets, one of them invented the dental float, in fact. Idk the reasoning, but our horses haven't had dental work in years, and they're thoroughly checked over every year. One of them must be pushing 30, and he's doing fine, the others are late teens.
Agreed on the sometimes poor quality of dental care, although those that I've seen have been "equine dentists', and not veterinarians. One of them was slicing the tops of the horse's incisors. He got into trouble for smuggling in vet drugs from the US, so no idea whether he's still at it. People will swear by using a (very expensive) 'dentist', and they think veterinarians are incompetent at dental work. Some of them might be, but I'd rather go with a vet than a supposed dentist.

I am sorry I don't know more about horses but I have a question...I know that in the human world, when a person has to have nutrition to prevent the body from shutting down, they can be given enteral nutrition, through a vein. Will they do that for horses until the problem can be addressed? I am just asking because I don't know....and GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING HIM❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! As far as I know, no. If horses can't eat it becomes a quality of life issue and there isn't a benefit to prolonging it really
@@rhfarmstablesHi RH. Hopefully he is drinking. His gut can be listened to for motility. Various animals eat poop because they need the enzymes. Maybe add electrolytes to his water, or give a paste form. Hydration is most important. We had a very senior pony recover by feeding a high fat feed in mash form, plus soaked alfalfa pellets like you are doing. Consider straight stalling for a short while to determine if he is passing anything, or eating it after the fact. It is SO hard to be caring for them in this condition. Recovery is possible, but it may take months and endless worry. ❤
He is drinking and does have gut sounds - we'll keep trying as long as he does!
Have you tried watery mash that he can just drink? Bran mash with some molasses for energy.
Farm where I work part time had an old appendix QH with teeth so worn down he couldn’t grind his food. He couldn’t chew regular hay, grass, pellets & grains so he got soaked hay cubes & thin mash w/black molasses that he could just slurp. Kept him going from 28 yrs old until he was almost 32.
The mix we feed is pretty soupy but we can add water for sure

Can you put him in a stall ,or is it better outside for more movement for warmth?
We don't like to stall - but he is getting blanketed to stay warm at night!
@@rhfarmstables Our oldie Anglo-Arab ex jumper, cannot be kept in a stall, he was abused/beaten in a stall, and keeping him in one will cause him to be soaked in sweat. So he's outside 24/7, in Alberta where it can hit -30C in winter, or worse, and he's happy as a clam. Horses are the last of the ice-age mammals, and are happy in cold, as long as they have wind shelter, good water, and excellent hay all day and night. They're built for extreme cold. Hay/digestion is their furnace, so they need to be "grazing" constantly. Small stomachs, have to be full all the time, which is why they're wanderers/grazers. He also gets senior feed with the hay.
We don't blanket unless it's very cold, we make sure he has a good layer of fat as winter comes on, and he does grow a good winter coat. When we rescued him, he was thin, and cold, abused, scars from poorly fitting blankets and saddles, ulcers, arthritis, and not blanketed, so the first thing we did was get him a good thick blanket, and a sheepskin saddle pad, and eventually got him out of the awful place we found him in. Now he has 2 elderly Tbred buddies somewhat younger than he is, both rescued from slaughter, and they all snuggle up in the shelter on winter nights. I have a theory that without blankets they get warmer when snuggled together, bc of the body heat.

High fat senior feed. I have a 30 year old quarter horse and it keeps him in good weight and sassy.

How do you feel about sugar beets? They use them in Kentucky on old retired race horses.
Beet pulp is a great source of fibre and added calories, alfalfa pellets we find to put weight on faster.

I have seen many Kieger horses. His stripes are very profound. Once you get him feeling better and on the right track, I would explore the Kieger possibility🍀🇺🇸

From AQHA: "The color recognized as dun is often confused with buckskin because the colors’ phenotypes appear very similar; many people differentiate the two by describing a dun as “a buckskin with a dorsal stripe.” However, they are genetically different. Buckskins are bay horses with a single dose of the cream dilution.
The dun gene is a dominant modifier and can appear on both black- and red-based horses. It affects the shade of the horse’s coat and adds the dun characteristics: a dorsal stripe, zebra stripes on the legs, striping over the withers, dark tips on the ears and darker coloration on the lower legs. These traits are a package deal - a dorsal stripe does not make a dun."
You didn't show anything about the vet coming or the diagnosis. Pretty lame.
