  • Whinny gets some TLC and a vet visit including dental and some B vitamins. She is starved and in desperate need of care, we don't know if we can even save this horse but we're going to try. Please donate to help!
We did not just throw her in with other horses, they spent time sharing a fence and getting familiar. A lot of time isn't filmed, or is cut so the video stays interesting

It hits me so hard when people mistreat animals. I think they should have to have some kind of evaluation before anyone gets a pet. Maybe even yearly check ups? I dont know but i do know that it feels like worse than a sin when people abuse anyone including animals.

Where this takes place in America they criminalize poverty you can’t afford to buy the horse food you’re criminal. If you can’t afford to buy shelter you’re a criminal there’s not enough support to help these animals to get out of their care or help the owners take care of their horses so that’s why it’s so important to donate to these rescues

A doctor who dealt with famine victims and “camp” victims back in the 1970-s1980s told me that he had at first been surprised how picky starving people, including small children, can be about food.
The reason is that they instinctively understand that their constitution is weak, and that they can’t afford to suffer nausea or vomiting or “the runs”. They want familiar food and will turn down unfamiliar and apparently high-value foods (eg peanut butter) in favor of what they know they can cope with.

As an owner, rescuer of all breeds of horses since the 70’s, especially Arabs, the purebred Arabians are tougher than all others. Their ancient ancestors lived in and crossed vast deserts, surviving w/ little food & water, fed dates packed with camel butter to make vast journeys. TY for saving yet another tough old goose, 32 years of any breed is miraculous, let alone being abandoned.

Mulched hay worked until we found Abscesses in his hooves from the Cushings. I was told by a Dental guy, not a Vet, that their teeth should not be touched after 30. For Silver, it was not good.

Did u guys try soaked hay cubes? They are denser than pellets. I had a 38 yr old Arab stallion and he lived on soaked hay cubes and rice bran . Rice bran is a good supplement and you can get in powder or pellets. I would suggest powder. That gives her fiber she needs and its soaked so easy to digest and much needed water.

I had a couple of Arabian mares but at different times of my life. The one I am writing about in this post was a mare I had when we lived in Arizona, and she spent her whole life with the same family, except twice when we moved to Pennsylvania and I took her with us. When we had to move back to Canada I left her with her "family" because by that time she was 19 and I figured she would not adapt well to our cold winters. She was 35 when she left us. Mary used to soak her pellets so she could "gum" them - she basically had to teeth left. They were still there just worn down to the gum line. She was a super sweet mare.

@@beaulieuc8910 It was funny in a sort-of way, but not funny at all for the calves who, when they are very young, need a quite different routine to that of a foal, with much less activity and more quiet rest, lying down. It was also distressing for the mother cows, who had to go and look for their babies when they weren't where they'd left them, and dangerous for my mare who was, of course, threatened by the mother cows who wanted their babies back, and she didn't want to let them go.
Separation from the newly-calved cows in a separate bit of pasture helped, but wasn't a permanent solution. The goat was!

Arabs are very people centered especially the mares like to be with other women. A lot of times they wint tolerate men or male horses..the desert bred lines are the most high energy horse on the planet. They really bond with humans.
My mare accidently knocked me unconcious once. She stood over my body and fought off all the men in my family who tried to rescue me.
It was only my daughter who she would let help me.
When she saw me again the next day she put her nose to my feet and sniffed me from toes to the top of my head where she gave out one big snort to clear my aura. Then she flounced off once she was sure I was okay.

We rescued a neighborhood stray that I think someone left behind when they moved. (Tuxedo cat) it took us 6 months to coax him completely into the yard. He was scared and just so pitiful!! Two years later he is my most affectionate backyard cat! But! He eats the best when you hover over him while he eats. No other cats can bother him while eating. I would give anything if I could make him an inside cat but we have 7 in the house and he doesn’t like my other cats. Rescues take a lot of attention but the payback is enormous! Mr. Bojangles went from skinny and horrified to a round tummy and his own apartment that is heated in the winter and he gets mega love now. We are diligently working to get every stray that comes into my backyard spayed or neutered to stop the madness of crazy cat numbers everywhere. Not all are friendly so that I can do flea meds and such but they at least get a good round of treatments when they get fixed. I need pray terribly to catch a very skittish stray mama who eats on my back porch. We rescued one of her kittens but the other got run over before we could catch it.😭 PLEASE pray we can get TWO of these mamas fixed!! Prayer is a powerful thing! And THANK YOU for doing what you do!!🙏 If each of us do what we can where we are the world wouldn’t suffer so badly! Whether you help people or animals, find something to help and do it!

I have used my Havahart trap so many times over the years to trap, then spay or neuter cats who are either tame enough to bring inside, or provide shelter, food, and water in our backyard. Most of our indoor cats were out fending for themselves in the woods behind our house~ and they clearly had homes when young and cute!!!😢

To me, It feels like Whinny is as emotionally starved for love, as the physical nutrition. Also---do elderly horses get a form of dementia, brain changes? I'm so glad to see how sensitive you are, noticing that she needs reassurance and company in order to be calm and eat. It's your Kindness that is feeding her, and what she craves. Aren't Arabians supposed to be very people-oriented? She's seen and done a lot in 32 years. Like all old ladies, she likes being paid attention to. Bless you!

Arabians are very people friendly/ In ancient times. the Bedouins would keep the horse in the tent. They needed each other. Many years experience with Arabians--breeding, training, endurance. At 81 I am looking forward to returning to the horse world. This girl is beautiful even skinny. They are very sturdy and usually do well on alfalfa. Easy keepers. I wish I could donate or had a place to take her in. Meanwhile, you and she are in my prayers. I know at least one Arabian who was still doing well at 45! Thank you for your program. I am enjoying seeing retired racing horses and all the rest. I am also a retired counselor and therapist of people. Glad to see you are also working with humans. I'm blessed I found your channel!

    She's a beauty. Such personality!
A friend had a super-senior who had his quirks about his diet, didn't like the timothy-alfalfa pellets and would tip out the green stuff to get to the Dumor Senior.
He was generally fairly placid, but when I turned into the driveway and tapped the throttle in my truck, the old boy would raise his head and flag his tail and race me to the barn, He knew I had a peppermint or an apple or carrot to chop for him.
He would always come to me and lay his head over my shoulder, lean in for petting or brushing, just an all-around sweet boy.
He had many human friends, and when he passed, his owner had a wonderful memorial for him.

I don't think she was starving, or alone, her entire life. The vid said she had had a "younger brother" who has passed...don't know how long ago. And the owner had acknowledged this mare had deteriorated in recent years. She may have been reasonably cared for for some, or even most, of her life. Not that this excuses what has happened to her.

Armchair equestrian opinion here…. I was under the impression that the behavior the horses had during the introduction is normal as they establish dominance. It doesn’t mean someone doesn’t “like” the new horse. It seemed she had lots of space to “get away” if she wanted, and the others respected that. She’s curious about the others so that seems good.
