Mark TDC and Add a Timing Pointer to Your LT1

  • Does your old damper have all the timing marks worn off? Just mark it yourself.
    Find top dead center and run with it! haha. It's not that easy but it is worth the effort.
    LS and LT small block Chevy stock dampers don't have timing marks. They don't have timing pointers either. Just add your own.

    That "socket extension bar" method for TDC is pure ingenuity !
    Going to apply it to my 283 tomorrow.

    Thanks for sharing. Recently went round and round on my cammed LT1 with this after replacing my guideplates. Kept chasing noise in the valve train that wasn’t there before. I used an inspection camera to verify where I was. Used a factory cam on the bench for reality check of base circle positions to differentiate between #1 firing and #6 firing. Still noisy. I’m chalking it up to the beaten/ worn 13 year old lifters (short travel Comp 875-16). Time for new lifters and pushrods I’ve decided. Been wanting a marked ATI damper for a while. Once you have TDC established you can mark any damper in the about 1:30 position and align the tab to it at 0 and call that your TDC mark, just like a traditional SBC Gen 1. You could put the tab at the bottom if you really wanted to, the tab for the timing light is just relative to itself as a reference once it’s set to 0 with the engine at TDC. The 1:30 position was chosen for visibility since it would otherwise be hidden by front accessories. Just works out to be a good spot to be able to see it and hit it with a timing light. But this exercise got me motivated to go after it pretty soon. Thanks!

    Hi Karl, You found TDC on the damper then etched it. So to be clear when you bring the 0 mark you just made on the damper to the pointer and they are aligned number one piston is at true TDC. If one was to remove the cylinder head piston #1 would be flush with the deck. Is that correct? Probably answered my own question. Thank you.

      @EllweinEngines  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes that is correct.

      That is an ATI damper. Customer provided it. ATI Makes a variety for the B-body and Y-body and Fbody and they have a good catalog at ATI on line.

    Do I need to remove the rockers to do the top dead center test

    • @EllweinEngines
      @EllweinEngines  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Good point. If you use something to stick into the spark plug hole then the rockers need to be removed. If not then the valves get in the way.

    HELP-92 corvette LT1 with the 24x conversion like yours in the video. I'm running the holley terminator ecu and harness. The ECU puts 12 degrees into timing but it seems that the timing is wayyyyy off. I mean coughing out the intake after shutdown.... have you noticed the torqhead conversion timing being way off? Thanks

    • @EllweinEngines
      @EllweinEngines  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not noticed that. I ran a terminator x using the TH sensing units on the engine dyno and timing was exact at the crank with a timing light. Maybe it's a setting in the terminator x software?

    If my valves don’t go up and down when I rotate the crankshaft what does that mean

    • @EllweinEngines
      @EllweinEngines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't really know how to answer that. 1st though is that you have a broken timing chain. That would be a bummer eh?

      @@EllweinEngines the chain isn’t broken but it did skip a I think 3 teeth.. I can rotate the crankshaft with the socket tool I bought but I don’t see any movement within the rocker arms when I rotate it clockwise.

      I always recommend the AFR heads. Camshaft I don't know. I leave that up to the cam designer. Give AFR a call and pick their brain. They all bolt right up and the stock intake works well. Sounds like you have a good short block. Enjoy!
