    It is no surprise the Harley guy hates the Diavel. Anything other than the standard cruiser "look" just won't do for the traditionalist. Having owned 3 Harley in the past, I wanted something different without having to sacrifice at least some reasonable level of comfort. I have driven the Diavel twice now and can't even imagine dropping money on a Harley now. The looks are definitely polarizing, but I have to say that I love it. I don't think anyone would expect that the Diavel is going to be as comfortable as an Electra Glide, Gold Wing, or any other touring bike. Having tried every Harley short of the Sportsters last year in Daytona, the Diavel was far more comfortable for me, when compared to the Softails and Dynas I tried. I am 6' 4" and the Diavel sits up higher which I really like. The seat sits down in the bike which again is a win for me. The VRod is a great bike, but I literally feel like I am on top of the bike and it was way too small. The Diavel also handles far better than any Harley I have been on. While I realize cruisers were never meant to be sport bikes, the Diavel can get down and dirty when you want it to. No Harley can compete with the performance of the Diavel (the VRod is close, but just doesn't handle nearly as well). If your the type of rider that wants to go out on some medium distance trips and still get some break neck performance when you feel like it, the Diavel is for you. If you want a traditional cruiser style then go ahead and get a Harley, Indian, Yamaha, Honda, or whatever brand you choose, they are all the same bike in a similar package.

    Thanks for sharing. I have two Harleys (09 Fatboy & 2015 Breakout), modified Suzuki M109R with a 300 rear tire and a huge 240 front (same size the little Ducati uses at the back...) and also a V8 Boss Hoss Big Block 8.2 liter (Corvette motor) - it rides on a 335 rear. I took a demo ride on the XDiavel and ordered one! I found the handling excellent (no issue with the "thin" 240 rear), the brakes are out of this world, the performance fantastic... It is a great bike! The one you rode surely was not set to SPORT mode. In Sport mode you'd not give it so much gas as in the video - it will just lift that front in 1st & 2nd with ease. I agree that the setup of the rear is way too stiff - it is the default setting - I adjusted it down and it was way softer. The exhaust note is "muted" compared to my Harleys Big Radius pipes. I do not much like the black colour as it always shows off those small "scratch" marks in the paint - but you can get these in any colour as long as it is black! I can not see the XDiavel as a cruiser - as a muscle bike? For sure! I love to ride my Fatboy when I want to relax, have a magic carpet ride, good fuel economy and have wind protection BUT the XDiavel S is some bastard - the grunt, the vibrations ... it is just special. Yes it is expensive - but when I compare it to my Breakout (same price!) it suddenly becomes the norm... and I feel cheated because the Breakout is without any technology (apart from ABS). I do not agree with the old paradigm of the Ducati being unreliable or still having electrical issues - those days are long gone - please take note that Volkswagen (Germany) has bought Ducati a few years ago and much has changed ... In real life the XDiavel S looks gorgeous - see it in the flesh before you comment about the looks. Ride it (in full SPORT mode please) and then compare it to you pop gun at home - this is a shotgun!!

      +TheJWC56 Nice collection you have there, It's always been the case that HD offers inferior technology levels with a superior price tags, but people still buy them (including myself) for lots of reasons, I think many people buy it for the name, or the prestige, I myself buy it for the old school looks, and I just love the feel of American Iron - which actually is now getting old to me, haha.
      I rode the XDiavel too and while you can def. crank it open in 1st gear (you gotta know how to do it, I started on sport bikes which are a good bit quicker so you learn how to properly modulate the throttle in 1st gear) and when you do and pound that Duc through 1st-3rd it sings beautiful music! I wouldn't say Duc's bad reliability days are over - the motards had MAJOR electrical problems on a portion of them not too long ago, if anything VW might have compromised their electronics more, haha. Though yeah, they certainly don't have the reputation they once did of having to wrench on them every weekend just to keep them running. I'd actually consider buying one now, where I wouldn't then!
      How you liking the Boss Hoss? To me that is one of the sexiest bikes ever created. Would love to own one some day but if I understand correctly their price tags are insanely high. Def. not a commuter bike, but definitely can be a nice weekend bike!

      +MrSlowestD16 The Boss Hoss V8 is "baddest-ass" there is. Raw V8 bike. They are expensive - especially here as I had to import at 11 to 1$... I bought the XDiavel S last Friday and I'm very happy - fantastic bike (but also expensive!).

    Interesting to read comments from a Harley owner, though a Street Glide isn't exactly a direct competitor. Styling is a personal opinion, but I don't like the Harley look at all - total lack of design integration IMO. Of course the XDiavel has a stiff suspension - it isn't a full-on touring bike like the Street Glide. This would have been more relevant if the guy had had a VRod.

    Thanks for the ride along Shawn. I noticed when the video first started and you were getting on the HD, how the handle bars were turned with the right grip closer to the tank(only way I could semi-describe it). You know, I just purchased my first HD a 2006 Heritage Softail FLSTI. This is my 6th bike since I was 21 and I'm 66 now. And I learned something at the HD dealership. I explained to the young fellow selling me the bike that I liked the way the shifter and brake were more forward because I have a total left knee replacement and have somewhat limited bending of that knee. He also noticed that for me to mount the bike more easily I get on via the right side of the bike and throw the left leg over. He also noticed when I pulled the bars up straight that it takes a little effort and he showed me the trick of turning the bars to where the right grip is closer to the tank, just like you had your bike parked. He also showed me how by doing this it reduced the amount of strength it takes to right the bike by about 30%. Long story to say, "You ain't never to old to learn something!" Ride safe out west from someone back east in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Take care,
    Ed

    Man, we had that XDiavel event near me in Roswell, GA and I never knew anything about it. Apparently not many other people did either b/c attendance was extremely light across the whole event. Bike looks sexy as hell.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Cranky Biker - I was surprised how light this even was as well. I asked one of the gals there and she said it's been pretty quiet at most of the stops... Maybe people just don't know what to think about a Ducati cruiser..?
      I had a great time! Not my type of bike, but that's cool, it was very interesting to ride...

      Shawn Smoak I think they just don't advertise it well. I've seen them in person but haven't ridden the X. The power cruiser hasn't been real appealing to me no matter the manufacturer.

    • @wasteofkind
      @wasteofkind 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rode the X at an event here in L.A. First ride was just me, the leader and a sweeper. Very light attendance. I thought there would be tons of people there.
      I wasn't impressed by the bike at all. Good speed, but just didn't have the wow factor for me. I ride a 2015 SGS. I would love another bike. I'd definitely get a v-rod before I'd get this bike.

      I don't get the "silly expensive" comment. $20,000 to $23,000 fully outfitted for an amazingly high end bike, exactly the same as a Harley, which most if not all would agree is not amazingly anything other than a Harley, if not less by the time you buy all Harley's truly "silly" crap like the guy in the video had outfitted on his and himself.

    OK. Just liked and subbed. Just did the same on XXXDeadHead's latest XDiavel review. I'm going to have to say pretty much the same here as I did there, namely that I've been enjoying your vids for a while now, and that you and XXDeadHead were the first motovloggers I watched.
    Same as with Mr. Head, I don't know how you manage to get the content out and deal with family, work, being on the road in the first place. I know you're across the Atlantic, but you still only have 24 freaking hours in a day, don't you? I absolutely appreciate the effort.
    Interesting to contrast your review with Mr. Head's. I was berating him for trying to tempt me away from my plan to get a Street Bob next year, with his subliminal messaging about how good the XDiavel is. Well, his in-your-face 'buy an XDiavel' messaging. You've provided a counter to his insidious influence, and I thank you for it!
    I'll be going back to the vids of yours that I've watched and adding my likes to them. It's only fair after all. I did like them. A lot.
    Oh, by the way, I'm not sure if you can tell, but from Scotland, let me check...no. I can't see Mt. St. Helen's ;)
    Ride Safe.

    I am very surprised you didnt like it more, I personally like the looks of it and i like your SGS and the Spyders. I think maybe the loss of video and maybe the looks just made the day not feel as good as when you get to ride other things,, who knows. I still thank ya for taking us along on these rides, right now its the only way i get a motorcycle fix.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Highlandragon - I had reservations about the looks before hand, but after talking with 3XDH at length about his test rides, I was really expecting to walk away totally impressed! Maybe I ride way too many bikes.., as I found nothing special about this bike. Sure it has great power and seems to handle great for a cruiser, but I found it to be overall awkward and quite uncomfortable. And looking at it just seems to be confusing, like you're trying to figure out what it supposed to be and who's it for? But it's all good, not every bike is for everyone...
      I did have fun at the event, and I did enjoy the experience of riding something so different and unique. I'm glad you enjoyed tagging along with me and looking over my shoulder! Thanks man!

    I think the Xdiavel is a transition bike for soon to be ex-supersport bike riders that want something a bit more comfortable but still can turn and burn when they need their depends to have a work out! I can see and feel the difference on camera between the Harley ride and the Duc. I think if the bike's suspension is made to turn and burn you do need pegs in a tucked in position and have to be able to have standing pressure on it for the corners. Otherwise you can't be in the right position on high speed cornering. You need to be off your butt on the pegs to do it right. It would be hard on your back if your riding feet out cruiser style with a stiff suspension. Your back is going to take all the punishment.

    Great Video dude, first time watcher. I like your upbeat personality, and take on life ! The Ducati XDiavel in my Opinion is a very smart extreme looking machine, I've managed a test ride on one myself, and kinda agree with your coments, I can only add, this being my only real gripe, I'm 6'2'' tall, and it felt a bit cramped at the time, although that said, I've put up with this on past Jap sports bikes. so If money was no object, and with the X-D coming in at £16K and the XD-S version in at a whopping £18,500 over here in the UK, I would indeed still buy one. But would I trade my HD Softy in for it? I think Not ! But I certainly wouldnt turn down a freebie thats for sure !! :-)

    No comparison. I’ve owned my X Diavel S now for almost a year and my HD Superglide Custom is just gathering dust in the garage. I literally have to force myself to throw a leg over the HD just to run the stupid thing. The Superglide feels and drives like a truck compared to the Ducati. 455 lbs and 156 HP and it handles like a dream. Brakes that’ll actually stop the bike as opposed to just slowing it down 😬

    rich mans toy. you were talking about the shocks that are harsh on bumps. I have an 1100 shadow. or on any bike, is it really worth replacing the stock shocks with progressive. don't want to spend $300 and there's not that much difference. 10 minute video was plenty for that computer on wheels.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BlackCat 56 - Most bikes are fine in their stock trim. When you start demanding way more out of a bike, like racing for example, that's when suspension mods become important. I always end up changing the shocks on newer Harley's because Harley thinks squatting them down to the ground is cool, but doing so makes for less than usable rear suspension travel. To compensate, Harley makes them quite stiff and uncomfortable. Plus, the lower ground clearance makes for dragging pegs, exhaust, etc when ridden fast... I change to longer travel aftermarket shocks to get the comfort and cornering clearance it should have come with. That being said, stock shocks on any bike will wear out over time and need replacing. At that point, aftermarket is going to be a much more affordable route to take...
      Lol, yeah, this Ducati was definitely one high-tech bike... A bit of overkill for my needs, but way cool if you're into that kind of thing.

      +Dallas Nyberg - I'm with you Dallas, I'm not a big fan of them taking this bikes too far... I just don't know who this would be for? The money spent making these type of bikes, only to appeal to such a small niche market. It's all high tech, cool and all, but doesn't invoke that pride of ownership and "I want to ride" feelings... As you said, maybe it's just me?

      +Shawn Smoak --It's like a lot of "modern" days things...for example, you open the hood of an average car and what does what becomes a mystery... Not so many years ago, the cars had engines that made simple sense - fuel in the top, spark in one side and exhaust out the other... They traveled the same roads at the same speeds.. it's hard to fathom as to why and how the radical changes made it all so much better.

      +Shawn Smoak I can't really understand the price reference. Harley's are outrageous as far as price goes. And the lack of any significant technology from Harley is a no go for me. Harley hasn't (with th exception of vrod) changed in half a century. I don't really see the appeal of Harley or any other cruiser for that matter. Seems the Diavel for someone like myself who want a performance machine with a laid back riding position.

      +deepwood4 - If something works perfectly, and you sell every one you make with little to no discount, why on earth would you make a huge change while your the #1 in motorcycle sales? Indian is the only manufacturer even coming close to Harley-Davidson.
      Just because they have the same basic look doesn't mean major changes haven't happened...
      If Harley's aren't to your liking, that's totally cool! No manufacturer has 100% saturation, not by any stretch.
      I'm not a cruiser guy at all, but there are cruiser type bikes that I like. I currently have a soft spot for baggers, naked bikes and cafe style bikes, but that could change back to sport bikes overnight... Lol
      The XDiavel is a totally cool bike, it's just something that I have zero interest in at this point in time.
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    I see some negative remarks because Harley rider is not in love with ducky. just like Harleys, Ducky have followers that will never touch a Harley and call it ugly as sin. to each of their own, that's what test ride is. I'm in transition of switching to Harley from turbo Busa. as we age, riding style changes.

    I watched xxx Deadhead's vlog on this bike. It does look good but I am a Harley guy. If I had insane money I would like to have one but I don't. You have to say they did a great job designing this bike and it is starting to get some attention. I would describe it as a mix between sports bike and cruiser. Great video though. Ride safe.

    its a cool looking bike. kinda neat that its cruiser/sport. regular sport bikes are not me, just cant do the riding position. The more i try the worse it gets. Ducati may have something here, but ultimatly a sport bike is a sport bike, and a cruiser is a cruiser. awesome video!!!

      +Shawn Smoak I would love too, but living in iowa, not to many of those opportunities exist. have to travel at least 4-5 hrs to like Chicago or St. louis.

      This defies that - it is sport bike when you need it and cruiser when you want it.

    I'd definitely want to change the tail to an old flat track style one with a long flat seat, mid pegs, and put a big 9 inch round LED headlight on it and regular turn signals if I had one of those. They really are too 'futuristic' and like you said, artsy fartsy. I mean leave it to the italians but still.
    Hey at least your gopro reduced your editing for you :P

    to me it looks like an over sized dirt bike with fat tires.
    I've seen to many bad vlogs about Ducatis breaking down repeatedly over electrical issues.
    so nothing I would look twice at either.
    I'm thinking the ducks were probably more interesting then the bike lol.
    thanks Shaun
