I sat down to watch this movie with a friend and his mother whom I often watched movies with right after it came out on video. We got through the opening scene and I said "The Dad is the killer. He just doesn't know it." I was asked if I had seen the movie before, but I hadn't. I just figured any movie that wanted to be based around a mystery would have a twist ending, and it was the very obvious twist you would write. The same friend, when we watched Saw in theaters said: "Killer's probably the dead guy on the floor." So I guess he got me back.

I like it because at times you think that Charlie is the dad, but he's so admit that it's not him and doesn't know what to do that you do question if it really is supernatural. And then the weird neighbor plays a part in all of this. Just making the whole experience really fun. At a certain point, I thought the whole town was a cult.

The movie's good at hiding that fact, except for one thing.
All this weird stuff is happening around the house, he finds a dead cat in his bathtub, his daughters friend Charlie is recreating her mothers suicide crime scene, she's also not in the right mental state .... and David just locks himself in his office and puts headphones on?

I remember seeing this one in the theatre with my cousin and figuring out the ending WAY before it ended. I leaned over to my cousin and said "The dad is Charlie". She didn't believe me, untill it was almost over. I figured it out, because I had seen the movie Secret Window first, where the antagonist is the main character too, and everytime something happened he is asleep and wakes up afterwards. It was such an overused plottwist around that time, that scary movies wasn't even scary anymore. At least not for me.

I mean it makes sense for her to have split personality but I like for it NOT to be bad. Mainly because in the picture for the USA vs its smiling. Ita not creepy like Charlie was. People who do have DID or systems, have it because of server truama. Its not bad nor is it homicidal. Its just different personalities that help the "main" personality live through life. Most that have it can go through life just fine. So itd make sense that after all of this Emily has a personality that helps her acclimate to everyday life. Cause in reality she wpuld be in the hospital and in need of severe care. And dont get me wrong she still would if she did develop did but, itd make sense as to why she was able to go back to school and she is in care of a child psychiatrist who could have experience in this field.

i absolutely cannot stand how forgotten about this movie is, i was 11 when this came out and the impact it had even at that age was insane, i saw the movie so differently. & the couple of times i rewatched it as an adult it still fascinates me to realize that my childhood memory of it was much closer to how dakota was seeing everything, and as an adult my reaction is closer too davids earlier perception of the events if that makes any sense.

By the time I saw Hide and Seek, I had seen so many twist endings that I could spot the ending coming a mile away. I love a good twist, but it sucks being able to guess the ending long before you even reach the halfway point of a movie. At first, it's fun, because you guessed right, but after a while, you start to want to be wrong just to preserve the surprise. Unfortunately, for a twist to get me anymore, it has to be something completely random that is unguessable, and that's no fun either because it feels like the filmmakers are cheating. A good example of this would be the first Friday the 13th. The ending literally cones out of nowhere. I like that movie because I grew up with it, but were it to be released today, I'd just feel like I got ripped off.

I just watched the movie. It popped on my Hulu. Watched the trailer and was hooked (DeNiro and Fanning) = no brainer. Didn’t know the twist. I was pleased with the movie but once the twist was revealed and I thought back on what I watched some of it didn’t make sense (like the Red Harrings). Your point of view of “Charlie” interacting with the other characters made sense though. Thanks for the content.

I remember seeing this movie as a teen, and hating it. Mostly because I caught on pretty quickly that it wasn't a hunting, but a split personality disorder person being the murder. The dad not remembering things, shots of him being at different places, him and Charlie never being in the same place or Charlie not having a form when he is running. As well as the daughter unable to explain WHO he is. Then there is Charlie knowing HE/them killed the wife, and so much more. I mostly hated it cause this is such a horrible way to do horror. I also hated that during this time actors just whispered when they talked in movies, which made it where it felt like they acted high, then like normal people who show emotions, but then the music will blast full force to startle you. It was so annoying. Since I do not remember a lot I do remember the ending of the little girl developing a split personality disorder with the drawing, and was like, "OH COME ON!" and never watched it again.
BUT I swear to god that this was the best find. Cause I have been wondering what this movie was for years, but couldn't remember the actors to save my life. So thank you for covering the movie, even if I still do not like it I thank you for covering it and sharing that this movie has different endings. I oddly remember the mirror ending of her playing hide and seek, cause I think it was shown on a tv channel? But the happy ending, hospital twist ending, and the best ending all new to me. But I like the hospital ending with out the mirror set up. I mean girl lived with her father who murdered her mom, and was trapped in that horrible situation until her therapist helped, and is still helping her. Like the fact they end it with, yes sadness, but hopefulness the girl gets help she needs feels perfect to me. Because in a lot of these horror movies therapy just never is a option or shown in a good light, which I think makes it better to me.

All right, dude... So, only seeing the title of this video, and not wanting to spoil your video, I went and hunted up the movie _Hide and Seek_ and saw the most recent one was from 2021, so I watched that. Then I started to watch your video and lo and behold, I forgot all about the 2005 version with DeNiro... which it had been so long since I saw it (way back in '05) that I had forgot all of it and watching it was a fresh experience for me. (Now I can watch your video, but now YOU have to watch the 2021 _Hide and Seek_ with guest star Joe Pantoliano and give me your thoughts on it so we can discuss!!!)

Nor can i find this movie online anywhere, which makes me really sad! It's such a good movie! I think I remember the asylum ending, the first asylum ending, mind you, as the one I grew up with, although I've seen them all. I kinda like the mixed one though, I feel like that is the best ending. I really wish more movies had these different endings, but no one knows that there even ARE different endings until we all start talking about them; I feel like that would just be a really fun way to create engagement and hype for new movies.

Hell yeah, you don't mess around w/that kind stuff as a parent. Like when a random guy offered me candy & I ran & told my mother who came back to find him. The look on her face alone made him turn instantly white "What the hell do you think you're doing offering my daughter candy? Who the HELL are YOU, you don't live here!?! & if I EVER EVER see you ANYWHERE near my daughter or ANY other kid ever again, that'll be the last time you see the light of day!" GO MOM! Also pretty sure she knew something my 4yro self didn't, but it worked, he literally ran away saying "sorry" over & over, & was never seen again.
....hmmm wait a min, or maybe he was just seen by my mother again???? Mooom, what year was it that you decided to expand the garden???!!!?!?!!

  • @BellaFalk95

I have a complicated experience with this movie. It was the first mature horror movie I ever saw.
My friends had told me the entire story. All the suprises and all the spoilers. Then when er all watched the movie I was scared even if I knew everything that was going to happen. I was so scared that I could sleep the entire night and was afraid to wake up in the night and see the clock at 2:06.
At the time I thought the split personality was a really creepy concept.
When I grew up and became more intrested in horror movies I looked back on this movie. I realized that the twist didn’t work. The story is that the girl gets an imaginary friend and a bunch of wierd and dangerous happends that make the dad suspect that the imaginary friends is real. In the end it is revealed that it is the dad who has developed a split personality and is responable for everything. It feels like a cheap cop out. There are clues in the movie but no explanation to how he could develope an evil personality just like that. If it was set up better like he have struggled with mental health issues for years and now he snapped. But for what it is it feels like the filmmakers don’t take mental health issues seriously.
I have to agree that the final ending feels like the best and it takes these issues more seriously.
