movies like this fill me with so much anxiety. not for any of the spooky stuff, but because of the seemingly ZERO progress the crew makes on this supposedly important job they're working on. with only a few guys, they have a week (we'll assume all seven days) to decontaminate this whole hospital (i assume, they don't really say if it's a specific wing or section). yet they all have enough free time to go treasure hunting; patient file investigating; sitting quietly on a tree limb; full team pow-wow on the roof. gawl dang, guys, get to working on whatever generic task needs done !!
Some videos are for distraction, others give catharsis. Sometimes you don't know where it is going when you first hit play. Thanks for the work you do, it is appreciated by your viewers. I always enjoy your deep dives and insights.
Breaking into Danvers State Hospital became a right of passage for northshore kids (north of Boston) in the 90s. I feel like everyone in my high school, including myself, made the pilgrimage. It was a very, very scary place. When I say that place looked abandoned, that's exactly what I mean. It looked like the staff just stopped showing up. There were still beds, desks, file cabinets, intravenous towers, medical instruments, etc etc. Of course, while we were in there, we would try to freak each other out. That being said, it was still so unsettling. If any place could be haunted, it was there.
Thank you for sharing that! That’s very interesting. I used to live in Salem starting in early 2000’s; wish I had grew up there, because I love the North Shore to this day and still vacation there even after I moved west. 😂 I met someone at the Beauport in Gloucester that was living in a condo there at the rehabbed grounds. She told me all about how she lives in the main, original building, and she said she had a resident ghost living with her that is very active and believed it is still very haunted .
"It looked like the staff just stopped showing up" that's probably what happened when it closed. Everyone didn't have a reason to take all the equipment or files with them, they just left, and then the building sat there.
@msclarabrown, I heard from an inside source, who may or may not have been a Danvers cop, that they (cops) hated to go in there on their own. When I went in there you could definitely hear things. Most of the time we just assumed it was other people doing the same thing as us. That being said, my memory of that place and how it made me feel is still unsettling. I'm not even a real believer in that stuff, but I felt something. Maybe it was just the collective trauma. Or maybe I just talked myself into being creeped out.
Didn't expect to get misty eyed at the end of this video. This was a message I needed to hear and it came suddenly from an unexpected place. I've been going through an extremely stressful and rough time. Just trying to push through. I know my friends are also going through a hard time so I don't want to burden them. I just keep going, keeping it to myself. The alternative scares me but I am tired. So tired. I just want to go home - figuratively, as in I want to rest somewhere safe and feel secure. Worry makes one sick. It keeps one from sleeping well. Watching horror movie content on TH-cam is a pleasant distraction. Out of nowhere, I was spoken to directly. Thank you.
Me either, but sometimes that's what happens when you get really honest with yourself. I'm just glad I was able to open and and didn't just cut it out of the video. I know I needed to say it and someone needed to hear it. Thank you, I'm sure me 3 years ago would be so happy right and I know I'm just glad I didn't give up somewhere along the way.
I can deeply relate to the not wanting to burden friends with one's own worries and hurts, I too often follow that same path of solitary suffering in similar circumstances. Having said that though, I would strongly advise you to do what's counter-intuitive instead, and do seek the out your friends and share with em. You'll not be sharing a burden if they are true friends, and maybe even relieving burdens of worry or perceived distance they may feel towards you.
Know this: as I write this, entire nations are enduring what you and your friends are enduring. I'm gen-X. I'm appalled at what the Boomers have done to their own children and grandchildren. They spent your future to gorge on more than they could possibly finish. I'm not in a good position but the younger generations have been entirely betrayed. I experienced the leading edge of the depredations because of where I moved for my career. I'm marginally better off than the young of today but that can change with a single accident. Knowing you're at least not alone is one thing. Knowing that someone took the time to try to give some perspective is another. We all know there's an eject button for life. Knowing it's there is sufficient. There's a phrase which may be overused by now but is active at all times: "This too shall pass." It's the answer to the question, "Is this bad time going to last forever?" Permanent solutions are the poorest solutions to temporary problems. Anyway, life is already remarkably short on Earth for all of us. You may as well stick out the ride until they kick you off. Hope this reply sees you doing better. If not, a phrase that always helps me is: "If it's in the way, it is the way." By that, they mean that life is always a struggle in some regard. That's why we're in the form that we are -- billions of years of adaptation to strife. We were born capable of enduring great suffering. In many ways, you won't become your total self unless you experience some form of strife -- trials then either victories or defeats.
@@PolterGibbstYou can do it. You are very gifted and create relatable, thoughtful content. You’re a kind person with a big heart and know how to touch lives. We’re all rooting for you!
No man I actually needed this. I feel I've been a prisoner of my own mental fog and unwillingness to do things for myself at home if it's not serving another person and I'm getting better
I know this is going to sound like it's out of left field, but check out the carnivore diet. I used to feel this way, too, and my social anxiety was getting worse instead of better. Carnivore changed all that for me in mere weeks. Just putting it out there.
Remember renting this movie at Blockbuster Video where I first became aware of it back in the early 2000’s. Seeing the ominous solitary wheelchair in the hallway was what drove me to plucking the VHS cassette from shelf and taking it home to watch. Having been a horror fan all my life I figured this was going to be an actual ghost story likening the movie cover to “The Changeling” with George C Scott from 1980. Classic film by the way. Once I watched this movie, guess I would have been 32 at the time. It opened up a whole new world of psychological terror that has changed my appreciation for this genre. Please recommend others that stand out to you which are cerebral and enigmatic. Watched your 2 hour breakdown of John Carpenter’s The Thing and you did an amazing job!!! You’re absolutely right, there is no right or wrong answer.
My boyfriend rented this movie back in the day and decided to put it on when I was asleep. I woke up mid-sleep completely terrified and I actually ran out of the house 😂 Needless to say I was awake after that and I made him start the movie over so that I could watch it. Something about Session 9 slipped into my subconscious that night and it instantly became one of my favorite horror movies of all time. 20+ watches later, it never disappoints.....
That’s a great story 😂😂 I had a similar experience with clownhouse. I woke up midway through it, watched a little bit of it half asleep and I have extreme nostalgia whenever I rewatch. A really low budget basic film, but did a number on me for whatever reason.
@@kurtcarter1964 Big budget special effects are required for terror, not horror. Terror is when the monster jumps out from the shadows. Horror is staring into the shadows while the music builds, wondering what the hell is going to jump out at you. Your imagination is waaaay more skilled than any CGI artist.
This one has been in my top 20 for years. That last line…”I live in the weak and the wounded”. It gave me chills and I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks. I’m a Christian who loves horror movies and that line just stayed with me. It’s been a bad year for me but thank God, when I’m weak and wounded I know who to turn to.
Yep, that is true... A thing I wish no one ever learned from experience, but that'd probably require there never having been any humans in existence since every life is so varied and it's bound to happen sooner or later with so many generations and individuals out there. Yeah... Definitely the only reason I agree with that statement...
That's the plan, just having to work my way up to it to make sure I can afford the switch. But that the reason I plan doing more shorter videos between the long breakdowns. So I should have another video within 2 weeks. And maybe even two before Halloween. Also thank you for the compliments.
PolterGibbst is the best horror comentator. Let's get this guys channel some more love. His quality is crazy good. He deserves way more viewers. Keep up the great work, brother!
The greatest part of any art is when your heart leaps in response to it, not in terms of fear or distress or joy but because the human experience resonates so deeply it shakes you, the animal you, the deepest you. We all feel so alone at times that empathy and perspective, when it returns after self containment, is devastating. Media seems to breach barriers that you never realised you had. I'm glad you find fulfillent and peace in your work, and I agree most whole heartedly about reaching out. Your review was honest and raw and resonated very deeply with me. You craft your art very well sir. ❤
Beautifully said, and I'll say I was a bit worried about the reception of the end of the video. But the movie also had a heavy ending that got to me, so I'd rather be honest about it than just laugh it all off... So I just try my hardest to make something that will hopefully resonate and ultimately help others.
@@PolterGibbst I've spent many a time after a great movie or book doing a impression of The Thinker in a dark room. You conveyed that experience perfectly. 😂 I'd rather an honest response like the one you had then the sanitised version that's the standard. Thanks for that. It's really refreshing man.
@@wewaitandwatch I'm glad to hear that. I know I've seen a few (very few) videos from creators I enjoy that hit that heavier side of life, but I always enjoy them for letting the moment stand. Basically the same as the film did, not pulling punched but leaving the honest truth out there for us to deal with.
Not only was this video amazing, as always. I have to commend you for getting real and sharing your struggle at the end, stress is a silent killer and I know myself and my father have a hard time talking about it sometimes. Reminding yourself its okay to talk with someone and ask for help is the best advice you could give to anyone going through any sort of hardship. I just want to say, keep it up buddy, watching your videos is a way for myself to escape and decompress just as much as i hope you making them helps you. Much love and God bless.
Thank you, I'm just glad my honesty is being well received. I was quite nervous about putting myself out there in this way, but luckily I'm finding I am allowed to be even here on the channel. Which is super comforting for the future, no facade or mask but just me. Also I've about figured out my whole set up, plan, and editing software. I'll have another video before the months out, and maybe even 2 by Halloween. Thanks again for the support and the encouragement, helps more than you know.
@PolterGibbst That's awesome! Can't wait, I already loved your videos, but when a creator is able to be honest with their fans, it makes me appreciate the work two-fold that's put in. Keep up the great work!
@@decoasty I know what you mean. Doesn't happen often, but when it does its impactful. More videos on the way. Got Tucker and Dale for the next movie breakdown. And the new series trying to find the best twist in all of horror media, starting with the very first Twilight Zone episode. (Plus I'll probably experiment with extra stuff on the second channel and stuff for y'all.)
Wow, I dunno where my mind had gone, but I remember having 2 alternate theories on the storyline. Either Gordy was actually Mary's child, all grown up (I guess I also concocted her as having a baby to make this explanation work?) My other theory, the storyline was following an allegorical contrivance, similar to that from the movie "Identity", where the events, settings, and/or characters were actually thematic representations formed of a broken mind struggling to rationalize sharing control of The System with its fellow alters. While the viewer listened to an accounting on tape of the reality of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as "Multiple Personality Disorder") from the outside observer's 3rd-person perspective, we were also (or so I'd assumed) following the narrative "reality" of DID, as viewed from the [exceptionally rare] 2nd-person perspective. Since the 'neutral' perspective as that of "The System" (depersonalized term for referencing the entity containing the mind/body/etc which a set of alters exist within, and share control over. What people without DID might reference as 'Self'), is uniquely positioned, narratively-speaking. Now obviously, I'm explaining this with a great deal more nuance than Early-'00s Me ever could've, but I tried to remain accurate to the spirit of my original thoughts. It's a bit of a crestfallen feeling, (I assume much like you'd felt about the movie not living up to expectations,) that this movie I watched 20+ years ago, which I'd thought was ahead of it's time, may have been still, just not how I'd assumed... It still has Unreliable Narration & ambivalent, ambiguous story, where you never actually know what you think you know, but you might? Unfortunately, the movie's not long enough to sufficiently explore those concepts... Really glad I stumbled on your video, it gave me a number of things to ponder!
Just confirmed appointment with my psychologist when this video was playing by sheer coincedence...creepy. You are doing great! Thanks for your videos. Subbed today...October 12th, 2024...a warmer than average Autumn day and a lovely Saturday. Enjoy the weekend, everyone! Stay strong! You're not alone! I was. I do this for a living then me n my coworker got drunk n found this, like oh hey its us, they made an our job movie...thinking itd touch on the things we experience. When it turned out to be a psych thriller instead we were hugely disappointed lol
Great breakdown! I didn't even realize that wasn't Gordon's hand, I thought he was just completely breaking and hitting himself awkwardly in the head, thanks for pointing that out because I otherwise would've never put that together!
Thank you for talking about this and for being so open. Mental health is very important to talk about, and it's also VERY important to hammer into everyone's heads that we're humans, with emotions, and we're ALL allowed to have negative emotions and you don't need to earn the "right" to struggle. Crying doesn't make you any more or less of who you are, it's just a reminder that you're human. And if we see Drs over problems like a fractured bone, why not over struggling mentally?
If you watch the documentary and the other extras on the DVD they talk about all these things. I highly recommend it. The 'hospital' effects each person differently according to their individual situations: Hank is a gambler who is always looking for something better, so he finds and becomes obsessed with the 'treasure'. Mike is the logical one and storyteller, so he finds and becomes obsessed with making it to session 9 to find out what happened to Mary. Gordon was already on the edge in his life, and walking into this place, pushed him over the edge. This is why you hear the voice that later turns out to be 'Simon' saying, "Hello Gordon". It is not supposed to be there, not even in Gordon's head, it is symbolic of mental illness, or even just of that moment in which we give in to the pressure and pain. That is why the film ends with 'Simon' saying he "lives in the weak and the wounded". This is not a ghost story, but a story about how the negative energies held within a place (here within the walls of an abandoned mental hospital) that holds so much pain, can be overwhelming and effect, the "weak and the wounded". Danvers State Hospital was truly the 'birthplace' of the prefrontal lobotomy, and was quite notorious in its' treatment of patients, so there would most definitely be a lot of negative energies there. We have all stepped into a place, or an environment, and felt, something, off. I was happy to hear that were not supposed to be any actual ghosts or monsters haunting this place. I feel it makes for a much more grounded and scary film. I really love what you said about 'Simon' being the embodiment of stress. I too thought the thing in the morgue was supposed to be the crematorium, but it is simply an old furnace. It was supposed to have been no longer in use at a time, and then used by a dishonest employee at the hospital for stashing the things he would steal from the patients who had passed. Removing the old woman's entire story was absolutely the right choice. This would have destroyed the atmosphere and mystery and we would have known that the things they (and we) were seeing and hearing in the shadows was an actual person, not anything supernatural or even mysterious. What Brad Anderson did during the editing process, was a stroke of genius though. He left in 'echoes' of her presence behind in the film to create a sense of unease and make the viewer question whether there really is something else in there with them. A few examples: ~ late in the film, when Phil is chasing whoever he believes is behind all of this, you hear actual footsteps running on the floor above him. ~the same scene, he runs into a room, and we see ripples in a puddle on the floor, and an overturned wheelchair with one of the wheels spinning. ~the HUGE one is the scene where Gordon kills Mike in the theater. Mike is crossing the theater, when he stops and looks up at the projection room. In the original cut, we see this woman looking back at Mike, and then hiding in fear. This is why Mike is staring at the window in the room with such, confusion. This gives Gordon the opportunity to run up behind him unnoticed and kill him. Find the DVD and watch all the extras, it is well worth it and will enrich your experience with, and your understanding of this film. This is one of the only films I recommend with a caveat: you must watch it alone, in completely darkness, with no distractions. The film is ALL atmosphere and emotion and any distractions will immediately pull you out of it. Thank you for your time and effort with these videos. Well done my friend.
This movie hit me too for different reasons. As a child I had to pass by a closed down hospital, every window long smashed and the roof tiles stolen it was rather spooky. Rumours it was a mental hospital (In reality it was a TB hospital) Many a myth was spun about ghosts and such which of course made all us want to explore all the more.
Wow, well I know if it was me, some friends and I would have had to check it out atleast once. You ever go in there? Or is it one of those where you get older and realize it's probably not as cool as the rumors made it out to be.
@@PolterGibbst Many, many times. It was frankly a deathtrap as broken glass and missing rooms had caused rot and mildew. An on site caretaker/security guard patrolled the area and would shoo you off but he was often pretty nice if you didn't run riot. In retrospect he was the scariest part as he was always trying to get you back to his cottage for tea. Maybe nothing, but in retrospect.....possibly not.
@@johnsmith8906 I sure this did strike a cord then. Since they really didn't have to do anything to Danvers when they were setting up. That's just how it looked from all the years of people coming in and out. That is... odd. But who knows, I'm sure it was a lonely job, but...
@@PolterGibbst It was looking back an oddly important part of my childhood. I grew up in the south east of England , close to the Thames river and a lot of war time fortifications were still in the surrounding fields in case of a German invasion, to add to the sinister air.
@@johnsmith8906 wow, I can't imagine. I'm just from basically the middle of nowhere, in one of the most forgotten parts of the southern US. Makes sense how that would stick with you for so long.
Love the channel! I'll skip a long story no one really cares about but I'm currently staying out in the middle of nowhere and haven't seen most of my friends in the better part of a year because of it. Your videos give me a feeling like I'm hanging out with a buddy, just nerding out about horror movies.
This has been one of my favorite movies since I first discovered it a few years after it came out. Personally I would rank it as the Godfather of psychological horror flicks after watching it probably a hundred times now. I've always taken it as Gordon being a former patient that was thrown out on the street who used work to keep himself distracted since he could get treatment anymore. Rewatch the opening scene with the chair...RIGHT before it cuts to them in the van, you see a shadow moving. But the scene at the beginning when McManus is giving the explanation on why he's there...the camera slightly pans over to Gordy. There were other cues too, like how Gordon somehow seems to know the layout of the building, busts right past Griggs to get into the building like 'hey, I know the way', the camera pans over to Gordy's reaction to the hydrotherapy table as if he's having recollection...when he sees the chair and zones out, he's in a sense, coming home and the voice vaguely recalls something he'd buried long ago....when he's in the seclusion, it pans over to a cut out of 'suddenly its going to dawn on you' and you get the suspenseful piano sting, and it goes right over to his face...when Mike talks about repressed memories, who does the camera blatantly focus on, Gordo staring at his phone. The three different personalities stated are the same for everyone...Mike notes it as Princess-innocence, Billy-protection, Simon-???without knowing that that is perfect. Simon is the unknown person we become under extreme pressure or pain. Princess is what we remember innocently and tell ourselves (veiled reality), but only the good things...Billy is what we see, and remember in repression to keep our sanity safe, but only until the bad things happen, and is also a fugue state (think about being in a state of constant daydreaming)...Simon is when your inner demons come out, generally under extreme pressure or pain. Things you have repressed come out, and you become a different person in a different state of reality...I live in the weak and the wounded. I.E. Gordon remembers that he went home and knows he can't go back for some reason...he realizes that he severely messed up, lost control, and hit his wife. That's all he remembers, everything else is repressed. Simon came out through extreme pain. Him wandering the grounds at night is out of familiarity that was repressed, but he's basically in a fugue state, setting up his little shrine to his family in Mary's room. Simon finally comes out for him when he, in normal state, FINDS the shrine he made and everything that had been repressed since the 80s when he was put on the street opens up, and he takes everyone out. The day after, he's sitting in the van in his normal depressed state, just knowing that everything is falling apart in his life...then the radio transmission calls him...that's his Billy state, same as everytime he's on the phone...he's in another dimension, always talking to voices that only exist in his head...when he finally 'wakes up', thats Simon finally taking complete control...he's no longer living in reality, hes in a world of no consequence. Did love your interpretation of everything, especially how you ended it, and for the most part you were spot on. Didn't mention that you see the jar of peanut butter in Gordon's bag when he gets out of the van to go into his house...that you later see in the tunnels. When Hank is walking back to his car through the tunnels, he's walking down the 'patients' side, as shown on the placard...so is the shape he sees behind him...but whoever it is that attacks him took the 'staff' side to get ahead of him and get BACK into the patient side...so they know the place VERY well. Mind you I'm watching the movie right now to remember...repressed...details of the movie, so all of this is obviously scattered lol. When Gordon is seen, after the fake phonecall that claims Hank left for casino school, wandering around obviously in a trance, he's doing it out of memory. Possibly he would be allowed to go out on breaks as a patient to 'reflect' in the cemetery. When he tells Phil about hitting his wife, and says he's staying in a motel, you see the camera zoom in JUST slightly on his face. Cue the owl lol. When he's dreaming you can tell when each personality was cued by the voice...you know who I am (Billy)...Do it Gordon (Simon). When he pours the iodine on his burn, he's changing state again due to pain and regressing into Billy because you see him wandering around the building next. When he says he wants to go home, it's not because the job is stressful or shitty, but because he misses his family and knows he can't...but Billy won't let him see why. When Gordon overhears Phil and Mike talking about him, you can see that he's wandering around in another dimension as Billy, up until he walks up to them and talks to them, trying to hide that he knows what they were talking about but doesn't totally lose it on the betrayal of trust because Billy won't let him, that's why he's the 'zen master of calm'. When he says 'you want to place the order?' you can see a little twinge in the corner of his mouth showing that he's visibly trying to hold back. He's still halfway in his Billy state when he sees the dollar on the floor and it cues a memory. You can see the focus of being in another state. He is being drawn to his photo den by Billy, that's why he is dead-set on going in that ONE direction and is following something that is clearly just ahead of him (wheels moving, ripples in puddles etc) plus the voice drawing him specifically in one direction. Billy wants him to wake up and knows exactly how to. When Phil says he's coming because Gordon says he thinks he found Hank, you can see the same twitch in the corner of his mouth. You see the little cut of Phil holding Gordon's wallet from earlier in the movie, which is his mind trying to come up with an alternate reasoning for what he found. When you see him shaking his head at Phil, clearly out of fear, it isn't of him getting killed by him, it's because the reality is coming to him; Billy finally let him see and he's in shock...which triggers Simon. When the dead Phil radios to him in the van while he's in his Billy state, you see his bag...now totally empty except for the bottle of iodine. When he got out of the van to go home to celebrate, he had flowers, wine, the bag of Oreos, and the jar of peanut butter. The bag to me signifies his life. When he was at home when he first got the job, it was overflowing, now it's totally empty. Obviously when he hallucinates seeing Phil standing over Hank, that is the embodiment of Billy talking to him... trying to explain why he did what he did, telling him not to tell anyone about what he did, then telling him to wake up. When he turns back to see that Phil wasn't actually there and he is in fact completely batshit, that's when Simon comes out...do it Gordon. I also still think that that was HIS hand on his face, because obviously he's going to have blood on him. How would Craig's hand be covered in blood? I do like that thought though...gives it that extra effect. When he FINALLY wakes up and realizes what he did, Billy takes back over and he 'calls' Wendy to try to get her to forgive him. The final passover of the building with the last words FROM Session 9 with Mary signifies that Simon potentially lives in all of us...I live in the weak and the wounded...
6:55 that's not just a thing that happens at a creepy abandoned mental health facility. That's called "an intrusive thought" or "the call of the void". It's just a little brain fart we all get from time to time, some of us more than others, where we realize we could harm ourselves or another person easily. These happen more when you're stressed out, or in folks dealing with anxiety, which can happen during a stressful film shoot, especially at a creepy old "haunted" building.
No matter what’s going on in my life your videos always make all the troubles currently going on in my life get put on the back burner and I can’t thank you enough for all that. These mean more to me than you could ever know. Thank you 🙏
And thank you for this, these comments help me see that this is more than just a hobby. And that I'm accomplishing the goals I set all those years ago.
I think people underestimate, and undervalue what it is to be a boss, manager, entrepreneur, business owner, a father even. Not everyone is built the same, not everyone handles stress well. There is a lot of risk, and responsibility involved too. I loved this video, and it means a lot to me. I havent seen session 9 in decades.
I said I subscribed because of peer pressure But really I subscribed because this dude deserves it and the amount of work and passion he puts into these videos is amazing
I'm just glad you're getting to see the video at all. It's been blocked worldwide until about an hour ago. 😅 But yeah this film is good at unlocking memories and emotions...
Did you notice the peanut butter Gordie had in the car? You see the same jar with Hank in the basement to my memory. At one point I also thought there was a possible implication that Gordie was one of the people who got released from the institution when he was younger, but I can't even remember why. It's been like 13 years since I watched.
I live near where this was filmed. The hospital is now apartments, but the main building still looks the same. Was very creepy building before it was torn down. Got to watch this a few Halloweens ago in the same building in a buddy's apartment. Made it watching even creepier. The building is also the inspiration for Arkham asylum.
I've watched this video probably ten times since you put it out and have it downloaded. I am obsessed with this, the thing video, and shutter island. Your presence is extremely comforting and funny and I appreciate the end message to this ❤ I get personally affected by these types of psychological horror - just the anxiety it creates of them day after day never getting anything done on this massive project Gordon got them into with an impossible deadline makes my stomach flip. Thank you for your work and I can't wait to see what you do next!
You touched others with your story. That is very brave and powerful. You are always honest, even if it means discussing uncomfortable topics and vulnerabilities. I hope by sharing, you’re helping yourself, too. You are great at telling meaningful stories. Your subs are grateful and hopefully, it helps you find peace to talk it through and realize you’ve made a difference. Thank you.

There was this Canadian band called Alaskan and had an album called "The weak and the wounded". I final understand what those cuts from the sessions were about. Thanks! Should have started therapy when Alaskan released their album but even later is better than never.
I try to watch all your content. I have been away for month or two. I enjoy your content, I have been where you were , but I have put some time and distance between myself and those moments. I know back in my time. You didn't fall apart or break. I had to keep it to myself. As a mom who had to work all the time, and take care of kids, and the house all alone I felt like I was losing parts of myself faster then I could put them back. I was married at that time, and my husband give me absolutely no help. I went crazy. So thank you for the content . Still my favorite content creator. :)
As a husband that has had to deal with a wife that turned out having mental illness I can tell you there’s only so much verbal abuse gaslighting manipulation lies and a refusal to seek help before you loose the desire to help and switch gears to survival and keeping children safe.
Thank you for sharing what you been through and the self reflections that come from it, is thru trials and tribulations that reveals who we truly are, either destroying us thru the process, missing Lesson or making us better to who we were before.
I wanted something spooky for October, but that ending is the spookiest thing of all. Reality. I'm just glad that i have things to help releive that stress like your videos, my friends and family, and my beliefs that let me know that everything will be okay.
I thought that too, so I had to look it up since that would have been interesting. Turns out that's what everyone thought when they first screened the movie, but since it was actually just a random woman they thought it best to drop it from the film. So they could avoid the extra confusion. Would have been cool to have her come back and try to end the cycle, but I guess they ultimately liked the more impactful/depressing ending.
@@PolterGibbst I do like the idea of an alternate version where instead of her "physically" being there, her ghost welcomes him, and it cuts to his own body. Though that would make the movie just a different style i suppose
You an excellent, and I mean excellent creator. I haven't watched more than 10 seconds, but I'm in for over an hour, because your previous videos are really intense and thoroughly enjoyable to watch certain parts to fully appreciate. I haven't watched a single video twice...yet, but I find some of your segments I'll watch a few times, go back to another point and just fully absorb the process. I haven't watched this yet, like I said, 10 second in. I hope you have some relief from the temperature. I know your AC was out. I think I'll find out after I watch. If it's still out, best wishes, and hang in there. If it's fixed, I'm relieved you have some relief. Either way, thanks for the content. You are one of four great inspirations for me starting my channel to do my (own passion) projects.
Still gotta get my AC fixed. 😅 But luckily it's cooling off. Hope you enjoyed this video, definitely took a different turn at the end than most of them do. But I do think it's cool that you're looking to start your own channel. It is a lot of fun, but I'll say it takes a lot of time once you decide you want to take it more seriously. Always remember to make the videos you want to make and talk about things you actually enjoy. It'll go a long way in you staying at it, and this being a longtime hobby.
@@PolterGibbst The video was very personal....to you and me and probably others. I really loved it. I really felt the same feelings you did. Of a slightly dark-light-hearteded note: I saw the director's cut. >:/ lol. So I was like W....t....f. I knew, because back then, there was blockbuster we rented it from, the clerk told me to wait for the "real" version. Wish I had. Great video though. Aiming so high, hitting, and then taking the humble bow to be personal. That was master class.
The owl thing - I watched this video on my TABLET, no headphones, and the owl sounds you played as a clip from the movie STILL sounded like it was coming from behind me, and that is some black magic shit dude.
Nah this movie was stored in the recesses of my mind frfr. You unlocked it and all the memories came rushing back! Thanks for an awesome video! Can't wait till the next one!
This is wonderfully shot, edited, directed and the acting is top notch. It’s an underrated gem of a film. Peter’s acting alone is worth the watch, what a performance! And the creepiness of the atmosphere and tension building keeps me rewatching this film.
great video. been a fan of this movie for almost 20years. i’m an electrician too. cheers bro a bit surprised you made no mention of carusso’s masterful “hey! fuck. yoooooooo”
Beatiful video, especially the end. Subbed and thank you. In case it wasn't so obvious you didn't bother mentioning it, this was the first time I realized - Mary Hobbs Hob/Old Hob - old English nickname for evil spirits or the Devil himself Hobbs End - fictional tube station in QUATERMASS & THE PIT (also about murderous possession) and town in Carpenter's MOUTH OF MADNESS (also about... well, madness)
I’ve never seen a movie review where the commentator got so down low with the audience. I recognize that a lot of creators love making content not only from wanting to share but as a therapeutic way of reflecting and talking to themselves. It means a lot that you would be so open to share that. Thank you for reminding us we need to talk to others, thank you for the awesome review, thank you
Another great video man. I died laughing at “skyhook”. I was a NYC union carpenter and the new guy jokes were golden, sending apprentices to the foreman to get “ink for the laser”, “buckets of steam to help set the insulation” and “finding a wood stretcher” there were too many. Thanks again, keep the content coming
The amount of times I needed a skyhook is what's really crazy. 🤣 I once had a guy convinced about the wire stretcher. Told him it's the blue metal one with the red handle, looks new since we haven't used it much. He spent way too long before he asked someone for help and had them laughing over it. Really just glad someone else understands all the references.
@@CasperParfums I have no idea how I did it. What's really funny is the foreman heard me telling him this without us knowing. So before he went looking he did stop to talk to the foreman who reminded him that it's the blue one, not the old green one. 😂
I was a medic. We used to send the scrubs to get a neck tourniquet! They would come back sweaty and anxious, apologizing before the door shut behind them.
I worked on an offshore oil rig. Every 5 years you go into the yard. In the yard the drillercon opposite shift told a new roustabout to get the skyhook. 2 hours later a 700 ton crane pulls up next to the rig. The cranes name? The skyhook. Half a million dollars and 4 fired people later, we get the speech to stop messing with the new guys.
Brother, you were spitting gospel Truth at the end there! I was not doing well at the beginning of October 2024 and had to stay at a psychiatric facility. Opening up, talking to somebody, meeting people who were in the same boat, it really helped me get to the source of my issues and find a healthy way to cope with stress, especially job stress. It was a long overdue stay, not my first and possibly not my last, but doing this thing for myself really helped me get back to who I was at my roots. Thank you for making these videos, your commentary is funny and is definitely an escape for a little while. Be blessed!
It's always good to have an art form to fight the stress with. You're a really good TH-camr. Being able to keep me entertained for a 50+ minute stretch shows how good your video narrative is.
Thank you so much for this video and all your other videos. I didn’t realise how much I had been holding in until I got to the ending… wow. Powerful stuff! Distraction!
I worked for L.A. County Courthouse in 1980 in the register of actions department and the huge library of Court Filing Hardcopies were packed with thousands upon thousands of lawsuits against Johns Manville company and these were all asbestos class action lawsuits. It was incredibly vast in its magnitude. This is one of the best psychological horror films since Silence of the Lambs. I have watched this film about a dozen times and it really stays with you and plays on the mind. 🤘😈🤘
I watched the entirety of this video, very well put together. I think everyone including myself has first-hand experience of the effects stress can have on the mind. I got the same feeling from watching Session 9 , its a "little bit too real". Gordon's character is SO well acted, I felt so bad for him the entire movie. Talk to someone. Don't run away from upsetting thoughts. Don't let Simon get the better of you.
Maaaan Session 9 is amazing. It’s always a recommend when people ask. It was a random video my Dad brought back home during movie night from Blockbuster and initially my Mom groaned thinking it was going to suck and well, us kids were suckers for bad horror by then (thanks Dad :) ). Needless to say we shouldn’t have watched it as a kid but it was amazing and our whole family loves it
Great video - I really appreciated the message of the video and have been a fan of the channel for a while even though I usually am not huge on horror as a genre. Keep up the good work!
Dude found your Thing video essay and been binging your stuff all day while down with the Rona. Thank you for the deep dives and interesting thoughts while I’ve been zooted on cold meds.
Hey man, sincerely, thank you for this video. I love all of your videos, but this one just hit me hard because I have also been the person who puts the weight of everything on his shoulders and nearly lets himself be swallowed by that darkness because he doesn't know when to reach out for help. It very nearly led me to end my life, until I finally reached out to the amazing people around me and got help. I also understand the catharsis that comes from having a creative outlet like this, and the comfort it can bring you from hoping that maybe it'll mean something for somebody else. Well, I just want you to know that your channel and your videos truly do mean something to me, and I appreciate the time, effort, and thought that you put into them. I've been facing some challenges lately, and this was just a good reminder that I'm not alone in it.
It's real easy to end up thinking we are often alone when the hard times hit. Leading us not to reach out because we don't see the point. Had a friend a couple years ago I had to physically restrain from ending it all. Hours of fighting back and forth and I was just so upset because he always acted like he was fine. If he would have just said something a few of us were there and ready to help him. Loving others and being loved is what will and can make all the difference. And this was a way for me to spread the love that I have felt to others. Just glad I didn't give up years ago, or else I wouldn't be able to help now. So thank you and you're welcome.
This hit very close to home for me as well. I really appreciate all these videos and all the time an effort you put into them. I had my eyes tearing up at the end there. Thank you for sharing it with us! Keep doing what you are doing, we love every minute of it.
Great video. You "figuratively" touched your audience and gave them a reassuring message from a place you have been and gave them a guiding light to follow. From an ex corrections officer, I couldn't finish this movie because I too saw myself in it but trapped in the walls with my need to do a job that the stress will kill you if not handled. Everyone's experience may vary. However, some experiences are ultra violent, and some won't see anything for 20 years.
This is a fantastic movie, it is so genuinely unsettling. Also the fact it was filmed in Danvers. Its one that sits with you, over the years I go back to it and each time, I notice something more. As someone who has a real interest in the history of mental health treatments (good bad and misguided), the research on the film was excellent, filming in danvers much of the items were just walked away from. They were shut down with no real pla for those. Trivia for you- initially one reason for no names in the graves but id numbers was. It was to "protect" the families from social embarrassment, or blackmail. Also in more high profile cases to prevent grave desecration. Yes there is a long documented history of patients returning both after closure or just release. For many this was the only structure and home they had. Yes that was the crematorium off the morge. Larger facilities were like their own towns. Some had farms to help sustain. Medical and funeral tools. Often they had workshops as well. Loved thi review cant wait for more
In answer to your statement "I don't know why you clicked on this video" its because I saw Session 9 years ago, and have always liked its creepy vibe. Also, I always forget whether the movie went with a straight up supernatural demonic answer, or a purely psychological answer, thus I was curious to have my memory refreshed and also to see how you would interpret it. First, I generally don't like when horror films end up being allegories for human emotions or conditions, such as grief, or stress etc. To me that seems pretentious and it also kind of kills the story, because it really isn't a story, its an object lesson. As such, I pretty much always prefer that a movie go with the legitimate supernatural view. Now, in this case, I think it actually works well as both, and I mean not just that its ambiguous, but rather that this movie is a good demonstration of how the demonic and the psychological interact and work together. (I'm aware that a lot of people don't believe in things like demons, but I do so I'm talking from my perspective, if you don't feel free to move along). Demonic influences can't just take people over. The real battle of spiritual warfare, or demonic influence, is a battle over human free will. As such, it is true that demons do absolutely prey on the emotionally damaged, the wounded, and the weak. Their primary mode of attack is by getting people to make agreements. If they can get a person to accept an idea like "I'm never going to be good enough." "I'm never going to have enough." "I'm never going to be able to succeed." "I'm damaged goods." and any other endless number of things, and get people to actually make those statements over themselves, that gives the demonic a foothold in your life and in your mind through which they can act. They don't take over your will and force you to do things. In your moments of weakness, they convince you to agree to lies, and they convince you to act. Christians often think that the primary means of inviting the demonic into your life is through the "occult" (which technically just means "hidden") but in reality, the groups which have the most trouble with demonic oppression are people who have been sexually abused, and people who struggle with addiction. In other words, people who are likely to believe lies about themselves, and have severely damaged self-images, and people who routinely practice self-deception to a very high, almost delusional, degree. I think Simon in this movie is a good example of that (whether intentional or no).
Well said and I do agree. I think too if the movie hadn't hit me the way it did on the first watch, I would have definitely covered it from this perspective. But here we are, with a great film to talk about from a couple different angles. Who knows maybe one of these days I'll make a big video to revisit all of my old ones from a different perspective.
I loved this movie from the beginning. But I agree it gets better after you watch it again. Im glad you went back and gave it a second chance. Also, thank you fir sharing how it affected you.
Thanks, man. This is actually the best analysis. On this seemingly corky movie. This perspective makes the movie more meaningful and that much more of a psychological thriller.
My man, what a day for me to watch this. I wont bore you with the details just know I had a rough morning from the stress of so much on my plate. I am really glad i saved watching this video until today of all days. Love your content and i am really glad i stumbled onto your page.
I loved this movie the first time i saw. It took me back to when used work the overnight shift and you'd walk around feeling sisconnected from everything because of the odd hours of sleep you were getting. Thx for the video ❤
Wow. What an incredibly good video this was. I love your take on it and it DOES help. Being the boss...the stress is unbelievable. My husband was the boss of his own small accounting firm, and he died far too young in July. I found him, on the floor, and I'm pretty shattered right now because he was the love of my life and my best friend. Stress of being the boss man ate his heart alive. Massive aortic rupture. I'm watching a lot of videos because I need the distraction. This is one of. my favourite psychological horror films ever, and you summed up the tension of Session 9 so well. Subscribed and ding-belled and all that good stuff, and I'm gonna watch some more of your videos now because you are freaking awesome! Thanks for the help and comfort, and a great recap of the movie.
Thank You for this synopsis. At the end you made it personaI & I know a lot of people feel the way I do because you made it personal for me too. When you talked about life's stress & to ask for help but then you quoted scripture. You touched my heart because my wife of 43yrs. passed away March 14, 2024 while we were on vacation in Tampa, Fla. God, friends & my cat Maggie Ray have helped me through this new journey. I'm retired & at night I play online video games(I'm a 68yr old geek) with my friends of 20plus yrs., then watch movies or TH-cam. I subscribe to your channel so when the video came up, I watched the entire thing. It was a breath of fresh air and you made me realize that i'm not alone and that I thank you for reaching out to your audience and for being a Blessing. May God Bless you and yours. Stay in Prayer my Brother.
Jeff gave me the answer. Right before the “person” gets to him, Jeff puts his arms out to hug the “person.” I thought was odd when I watched it, which it then dawned on me what was actually happening! Amazing movie and even more amazing review!

movies like this fill me with so much anxiety. not for any of the spooky stuff, but because of the seemingly ZERO progress the crew makes on this supposedly important job they're working on.
with only a few guys, they have a week (we'll assume all seven days) to decontaminate this whole hospital (i assume, they don't really say if it's a specific wing or section).
yet they all have enough free time to go treasure hunting; patient file investigating; sitting quietly on a tree limb; full team pow-wow on the roof.
gawl dang, guys, get to working on whatever generic task needs done !!
You read my mind brother 😂 I was thinking the same thing.
Some videos are for distraction, others give catharsis. Sometimes you don't know where it is going when you first hit play. Thanks for the work you do, it is appreciated by your viewers. I always enjoy your deep dives and insights.

Having gone through a HELL of a few weeks and nearly broken down recently, this was a helpful video to stumble on. Thanks.
I'm really sorry you're struggling

Yup. I explored every inch of that place
Met State in Waltham as well
Didn't expect to get misty eyed at the end of this video.
Take it one day at a time. Never give up.
There's a phrase which may be overused by now but is active at all times: "This too shall pass." It's the answer to the question, "Is this bad time going to last forever?"
Permanent solutions are the poorest solutions to temporary problems.
Fifty-thousand seems insanely low for how good your videos are.
😅 thank you. I'd have to blame it on my lack of an upload schedule. But I've finally got some stuff figured out and a plan. Now just to get to work.
Holy crap thats the best way to describe the last 3 years of my life. Hang in there, fellow human on the internet.
I know the feeling, there's more of us than I thought.
One of my favourites. Super underrated. Must watch for horror fans.
I agree! I love this movie
It is one of the best, scariest, ending lines ever.
realizing you’ve already lost what you thought you was losing is the most terrifying realization you’ll experience before your reality breaks.
Yep, that is true... A thing I wish no one ever learned from experience, but that'd probably require there never having been any humans in existence since every life is so varied and it's bound to happen sooner or later with so many generations and individuals out there. Yeah... Definitely the only reason I agree with that statement...
You need to do these videos full time bro

Why was the PC port of homecoming such a crash happy piece of garbage?
The wheelchair moment in the office building in SH3 felt so much like this movie.
Wow, I dunno where my mind had gone, but I remember having 2 alternate theories on the storyline. Either Gordy was actually Mary's child, all grown up (I guess I also concocted her as having a baby to make this explanation work?)
My other theory, the storyline was following an allegorical contrivance, similar to that from the movie "Identity", where the events, settings, and/or characters were actually thematic representations formed of a broken mind struggling to rationalize sharing control of The System with its fellow alters.
Never be ashamed to seek help or ask for help because there is no shame in that. There is no weakness in asking for help (no matter your gender). There is no requirement for us to bear our burdens alone.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate the little monologue you had at the end of the video. You bring me a lot of joy and escape from the mundane day to day. Keep going dude I love your video breakdowns.
Saw this soon after it came out. Such a great diamond in the rough. No one I've showed this film to was ever not in awe and loved it
Just glad people do know about it. I've never seen anyone else talk about it before.
The scary movies bring my anxiety up and then you calm me down with how awesome you are, thanks for always making great videos
A few examples:
~ late in the film, when Phil is chasing whoever he believes is behind all of this, you hear actual footsteps running on the floor above him.
This one's always been a favorite bc of how uneasy it would make me feel despite "nothing happening" love these slow ominous horror films
I wasn't a fan of this movie the first time I saw it but I love what you've done with it. ♡
This movie hit me too for different reasons.
As a child I had to pass by a closed down hospital, every window long smashed and the roof tiles stolen it was rather spooky. Rumours it was a mental hospital (In reality it was a TB hospital)
Many a myth was spun about ghosts and such which of course made all us want to explore all the more.
Wow. My Dad taught film interpretation at the local University. You're good at this .
I appreciate your well wishes at the end, but I already received a great blessing in this beautiful video you gifted us with.

I love this movie, watched many times. It's so visceral and haunting. You did a great analysis!
I think people underestimate, and undervalue what it is to be a boss, manager, entrepreneur, business owner, a father even.
Not everyone is built the same, not everyone handles stress well.
There is a lot of risk, and responsibility involved too.
I loved this video, and it means a lot to me.

But yeah this film is good at unlocking memories and emotions...
Did you notice the peanut butter Gordie had in the car? You see the same jar with Hank in the basement to my memory. At one point I also thought there was a possible implication that Gordie was one of the people who got released from the institution when he was younger, but I can't even remember why. It's been like 13 years since I watched.
another thing is you see the oreos he "brought inside" at the end in the van that the last guy is eating

You convinced me to watch this a second time. You are so right about talking to someone to keep things from going chaotic.
I wanted something spooky for October, but that ending is the spookiest thing of all. Reality. I'm just glad that i have things to help releive that stress like your videos, my friends and family, and my beliefs that let me know that everything will be okay.
I thought the alternate ending was suppose to be Mary still living there.. either way.. underrated gem

I once had a guy convinced about the wire stretcher. Told him it's the blue metal one with the red handle, looks new since we haven't used it much. He spent way too long before he asked someone for help and had them laughing over it.
Really just glad someone else understands all the references.

Beautiful message! Thank you for making this! I love your content and it's ben having such a positive impact on my life. Stay blessed!
I needed to hear this today. Thank you ❤
Great video.
This meandering retelling of the story of Session 9 was exactly what I needed today :)
I watched it so long ago when I was much younger & loved it
This is a fantastic movie, it is so genuinely unsettling.
Loved thi review cant wait for more
Fantastic review. Thank you tor the needed distraction from some recent stress!
I don’t typically care for horror movies but I love listening to you talk about them!

I also love the way u do these videos. Thanks for the comment and the caring advice. Keep up the great work man.
Also, thank you fir sharing how it affected you.
im not even a big horror movie guy but youre extremely entertaining to watch
Thank you, luckily this film is a mix of mystery/thriller/horror... and it'll make sense at the end why I had to make the video
Thanks, man. This is actually the best analysis. On this seemingly corky movie. This perspective makes the movie more meaningful and that much more of a psychological thriller.
Great review! I watched this movie years ago, but it’s super interesting to hear it from your perspective. Thanks so much!
I love your take on this. This is the first video I've seen from you and I deeply appreciate your honesty and your words. Thank you.
Love your videos, dude. You seem like the type of guy i could get a beer with and talk about movies.
