Man, if I had a mum like that, I'd pretend to sleep walk around the place saying "Hawaii..." "Hawaiiiii...." and then, eventually, we'd just go there. It would solve my sleep-walking for a bit until, suddenly, right out of the blue ... _"SWITZERLAND..."_
@@danielclark-hughes692 Harry's American. It's Sean Bean doing a US accent or you get a different actor; there's no in between when you have an established franchise where the character being a typical resident of their country is an important distinction of who they are. Making Harry British would be like making Sherlock talk like a cowpoke.
Great movie but It’s crazy how much they changed. Dahlia was actually the cult leader in the game. They impregnated Alessa with their god and burned her in order to complete their ritual of birthing god. Ultimately they fail as the town projects alessas subconscious nightmares into reality splitting her soul. Also silent hill isn’t abandoned like the movie makes you think. In the real world silent hill is a normal town with a mysterious supernatural power that takes people in. Alessas nightmare gives rise to the other world (or darkness as the movie calls it). This was only a fraction of what they changed😭.
Oh wow. Thats insane how much stuff is different. I can see why everyone is saying it isn't that great if an adaptation, but is a good movie besides all that. Which I guess it got me interested in the franchise, since now I want to start playing the games to get the real story.
They changed it to make the premise more believable I suppose because reading your comment made me think What? What?! What???!!! 🤯 if that had been the story it would have been more campy. They just went for somewhat realistic motives I guess 🤷🏻♀️ As someone who hasn’t played the games, I absolutely love this movie.
As someone who has played the game, the interpretation is very entertaining as a stand alone project My only BUT about the movie was introducing pyramid head, but the tied bathroom man was a nice add to the lore
@@PolterGibbst If I'm frank, it doesn't stay to the word of the story, but I feel it stays to the spirit of it. This is one of the few video game adaptions that felt, to me, that it got its source material even if it just took concepts and ran with a new story using them. Considering the amount of complexities that the game had, I think I'd prefer this over them attempting and failing to more directly adapt it. They tried to go back on track for the second movie (adapting the third game which was a direct sequel to the story of the first) and it was, imo, a disaster for it.
guess you never played the game because i consider myself lucky to have played the games back when they came out and the experiences i had were in a good way some of the most horrific and scary ones when it comes to multimedia like games or movies etc. but that movie was just lame and a wasted opportunity to create a movie masterpiece tbh
@@shitfucked All the movie did was gender swap the parent in the first game, and then cobbled the first and second games plots together and then blabbed on about motherhood. I was more terrified playing the games than watching the movie, the first time meeting pyramid head was a serious "wtf am I experiencing" moment in SH2.
I really think this movie is best watched divorced from the source material. As an adaptation, it sucks. As a movie in its own right? I honestly really like it.
What happened to Cybil still upsets me 😭 She deserved better. All she wanted to do was protect an innocent little girl. I love this film. It might not be a good “adaption” but it’s a fantastic horror adventure story. I love a good female protagonist, and this film had so many positive and negative representations of the feminine. On a side note, there are a few great video essays about female rage, particularly in the horror genre. Something to watch in your own time, if you’re interested.
Even as a long time fan of the game, I still find this film to be pretty good for a video game adaptation. They made some changes, but not enough to where it's not even Silent Hill anymore. Loved that they kept the original music too.
This one holds a special place in my heart. a ton of the music in the film is directly ripped from the games and even mechanics from the game like radios getting static-y and glitchy is a sign that enemies are near which is exactly what happens in the film as well. The director of this is actually coming back to make a NEW silent hill film since the series is having a bit of a revival at the moment. I mean, a spinoff game JUST released yesterday for the ps5 for free.
I'm very interested in how the new film will be since it's about the 2nd game. He did an amazing job here and It sucks he didn't stay to do the sequel based on the third game i believe; This is a convoluted predicament to explain
@@thekingofstillwater5890 if they do some gender swap like the first one or any of that gender identity race politic blablabla bullshit im gonna fuckin lose it
@sixhunna66 no matter what the movie has in it, people that talk like you do will ALWAYS find something to whine and complain about. You're going to find any little thing that's different and make up a story about how it's "politics" or some other buzzword you people can't even define. 😂
Silent hill will always be one of my favourite horror movies. I saw it when I was 15, before I was a video game fan.. And in this new age of video game adaptations, I think people will end up looking back at silent hill and hopefully saying oh, it was actually good and I just had a stick up my ass. Edit: It's ALESSA 😂 you kept saying Alissa and it was driving me nuts! Glad you enjoyed the film.
Compared to the other adaptation I've covered this amazing for sure. Even now I think it holds up really well. I also realized when editing the difference. 😅 I kept forgetting everyone else's name and just thought I had this one right. (Except Cybil, never forget Cybil.)
The changes they made were fine for audiences who, obviously WOULD NOT know the backstoey, or have played the games. In terms of accuracy, there was none. Which is often how game to movie adaptations work. Never to the satisfaction of the source material. It is what it is. We just want plots that follow the source material. 😂😂😂😂 But in terms of overall vibes, it ch3cks out. But Silent Hill is the ONLY film in the franchise that was remotely passing for "good."
@@miffedcuttlefish6139A key issue is that people who haven't done some kind of media studies struggle to realise just how different games and movies are, and how difficult it is to transfer between them well. For me, it's not about plot (although that's part of the problem - a bog standard 40hr game plot would need a TV show, even 1.5hr Portal would need a longer movie), but also the feel. The feel of directing the action of the game: even different to a book where the plot is laid out and you can open the last page. A game stops when you stop, and you can't open to the last 'page'. We have to choose to keep going, even if the plot is completely linear. It makes it more immediate, more connected to us, the player. We aren't a viewer, we aren't a reader: we *are* the character and *I* move through the plot, even if I have a different name and face for a while. A movie cannot replicate that. And to me, that's why video game movies always have that something that's just missing, even if otherwise perfect.
@@caylem00 i agree entirely. I'm aware of all that. And I think most are, I think we just all have parts of the stories in the games we prefer to have seen, as we connect with certain characters more than others. And it's just not possible to put it in a movie. I would prefer TV mini series styles to do this if they wanted to do it "right." That's just my opinion, but otherwise I *COMPLETELY* agree. It wasnt bad for what it was, it also WASNT Silent Hill. They did GREAT for the unknowing audience.
I remember watching this movie no less than three times at the cinema. I grew up playing the Silent Hill games and I absolutely adored this adaptation. The creative liberties taken with it were very interesting. The ending was such a psychological roller-coaster. For me as someone that played the games and knew them inside and out, this movie was refreshing and still captured the essence of the first video game. Now I really want to watch this again. I'm really glad you enjoyed this film.
That's why people brought it up on the video I did about Possum. I honestly just thought it was the creepy atmosphere but this makes a lot more sense than just the way the creepy tones of the movies.
Hey if you haven't seen it check out the movie "Jacobs ladder" the creators of the og silent hill game said they took some insperation from it. It's all around more of a deep and masterfully made classic movie and the main actor is the guy who played andy dufraine in shawshank. You 100% will love it.
I'm gonna have to watch it again. Think I was busy doing something when I saw it the first time, because I just don't remember the second half of the movie. Luckily I just found my copy of it like 2 days ago so I can rewatch it.
So glad you’re watching this one. It was one of my favorites as a teen and I still love it to this day. I absolutely love the games and think this is a gem of an adaptation. Super unpopular opinion among Silent Hill game fans but I absolutely love this movie and think they did such a great job with it.
Yeah def doesn’t deserve all the hate even with the character changes and stuff they really made silent hill look AMAZINGLY HORRIFIC and it holds up way too good for being like 20 years old 😭
Silent Hill is the domain of an elder god. It calls to people to face the burdens of their soul or die trying. For the mother it was the fear of losing her daughter. For the cop it was being unable to rescue the child. The cop failed. Pyramidhead is from the second game. It is the manifestation of the protagonists desire to be punished for what he did. Because of this, Silent Hill has no control of pyramidhead.
52:00 Pyramid Head is usually an unexplained entity whose goals are never explicitly stated. The common understanding of Pyramid Head is that he represents guilt and a desire to punish oneself. Typically, he also acts as a guide, not always forcing you to go where you want to go, but where you need to go. A real, face your truth or my blade kinda thing. In the movie I'm not exactly sure why he was there, but it could be said he may represent the guilt of the town members who might be grappling with the idea that they burned a child for their salvation.
He was in the movie because he's Pyramid Head. You can def find ways to justify it explain it in-universe, but at the end of the day he really didn't belong in this movie. They weren't about to make a SH movie without the most recognizable (and marketable) character, they were gonna shove him in one way or another (pun intended)
Not quiet right. Masahiro Ito created Pyramid Head explicitly for Silent Hill 2 to represent James guilt and desire to punish himself. Every other appearance of Pyramid Head is wrong lore that Konami introduced after there was no Team Silent anymore and was simply added to have the cool looking Pyramid thing make a cameo to increase sales.
@@Bambuzzsprosse absolutely, but the Silent Hill canon no longer only exists inside Silent Hill 2. The character has since abstracted and become more than just a literary tool for James' story. The common theme for phead across all his appearances is a need to punish oneself for acts they still hold guilt for.
@@axellis8333 Bend it like you want. It contradicts the lore Silent Hill 1-3 established flawelessly. Even IF someone else would have a desire for punishment, the punisher would not take the form of Pyramid Head because he's a projection of the mental self of James and every other's projection would look differently, according to their mental self.
While this movie is enjoyable, it gets things wrong. This is an adaptation of the first game which opens with Harry Mason, the MC of the game and his daughter Cheryl. Harry ends up running off the road and fall unconscious and when he comes too Cheryl is missing and the rest of the game is him trying to get his daughter back (the movie follows this plot OK). No issue with it being the mother (who was dead in the game) and not the father, but how they actually get there is forced with the modern setting. One thing that the movie does that pisses me off is change how Silent Hill actually works. Silent Hill in the game is a resort town surrounding a lake and a thick fog comes off of said lake, not a coal fire also Silent Hill isn't an abandoned town it has 3 level (I don't know the proper names so i'm just gonna put what I call them)top layer is normal reality where Silent Hill is just a quiet unassuming resort town 1 layer down you get fog world that's where the monsters come out and whole sections of ground is missing and the third and maybe final layer is rust world where everything is made out of rusted metal. Sorry this was so long.
Some of the scenes in this movie are quite hard to watch, people being burned alive and that barbed wire scene omg narly as hell. Dark stuff.....and one of my fav movies too lol. The director for this movie is making another movie for the 2nd game. Cant wait.

Dude glad you saw this wild movie finally. People hate on it, but it has a certain otherworldly quality that never gets old and is almost never captured in other movies. I saw it in theatre with a buddy way back in 2006 and we were so shocked and emotionally disturbed/conflicted / confused we felt like fighting / crying / screaming all at once haha.
It’s because the special and practical effects work super well together and are high quality. There aren’t a lot of newer movies these days that dedicate so much effort to carving out the flavor of the world, Silent Hill had a lot of material to work with though.
Love your videos. I'm so tired of people making reaction videos and not adding anything to them other than sounds of shock or asinine comments. Looking forward to your next video :)
I know what you mean, I started out doing reaction type videos and quickly figured out I didn't even like making them. Which makes sense since I don't watch them either. That's why I lean more towards commentary. Next few videos will be commentary/video essay, I'll have to find another movie I haven't seen to do this again. Got any suggestions?
Me too! This is exactly how I like to go over movies I've already seen. Videos in this style make it feel like watching a movie with an old friend which I LOVE!
If I remember correctly, Alessa was burned but didn't die. The girl that Rose absorbed was a demon that came to Alessa who was in constant pain and torment and gave her vengeance over Silent Hill. Every nightmare thing that Alessa thought of became reality. Sharon was all the good that was left in Alessa removed and given form. Pyramid head was one of the things that Alessa created. Hope this helps with some of your questions. I loved the games up until The Room and enjoyed both movies. Have a good one and God bless. 🙂
just from the movie content (as I know it differs from the games), some of my understanding: ----------- yes, despite her severely burnt body (from the cult burning her alive) (as punishment for the towns' and its cults' evil, the alter/table that Alessa Gillespie was being burned alive on, was knocked over, and its fires would burn not just the building, but the entire town), Alessa Gillespie didn't die, being rescued by the guy-cop with the gloves over his burnt hands (who Rose's husband interacted with), and taken care of as best as could be, by the hospital's nurses... --------- in her abysmal state, Alessa Gillespie had nothing but hatred and contempt... "enters" the Devil itself (not merely a demon) (there's lots of demons, the cult actually worships one, which you learn about in the sequel movie, but this is the Devil itself), offering its "contract" to Alessa Gillespie, which she so eagerly accepts... the Devil gives Alessa some of its power, for her to get her revenge on the town and the cult, in exchange for her soul (revenge/vengeance for Alessa's soul), by merging a part of itself with hateful burnt Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", but for the Devil to merge a part of itself with Alessa, all of the good, innocence, purity, and etc that was still within Alessa, deep inside of her, had to get out of her, as such "light and goodness" couldn't be sharing the same space with the "darkness and evil" of the Devil itself... which created "Light Alessa", a baby whom would get adopted by Rose and her husband (whatever his name, lol), whom they would name "Sharon" this is how/why "Sharon" had her dreams/visions and etc, how the Devil could "talk" and interact with her, as part of the Devil was merged with Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", one half of Alessa, and the other half of Alessa, is "Sharon", the "Light Alessa" once/after the hateful burnt Alessa Gillespie "signed" the Devil's "contract", all of the "sinners" just disappeared as mentioned by that guy-cop with the gloves covering his burnt hands, as they were transported to Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), with Dark Alessa creating a fake silent hill there, so the "sinners" would still think they're alive within their silent hill town in the real world... as she gets her revenge on them, having them suffer for eternity... except, she couldn't get her revenge upon those within the church, as it was holy grounds, even being within Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), and being (or despite being) the Devil itself, it must honor its contracts, and so, the Devil had to find a way to get to those "sinners" hiding within the church... the Devil's plan involved Rose... not only getting the revenge for Alessa, but also in going after, Light Alessa ("Sharon") too, what luck for the Devil... getting to "kill two birds with one stone"... but what is the Devil's interest with "Sharon" (Light Alessa).... hmm.... what happens at near the end of the movie, "Sharon" (Light Alessa) opens her eyes... looking at the Devil, and it smiles back at her... and there's a lot more to explain, but not going to get into it... too much work... ----------------- pyramid head, was assigned by the Devil, as/to-be the protector of Dark Alessa, which thus extended to those Dark Alessa cared about and wanted to protect, like her mother, Dahlia Gillespie, and Rose too, as Rose was trying to help Dark Alessa and cared about Dark Alessa, as well as also, the Devil needing Rose as well, in order to honor it's "contract" with Alessa, to get revenge, on the last of the "sinners" hiding in the church... and so, protecting Rose with in both Dark Alessa's and the Devil's interests, and so Pyramid Head protected Rose too
The director confirmed that "Dark Alessa" is Alessa's evil given physical form. She's Alessa _inner demon._ The script had her explicitly state that she is Alessa. "And who are you?" "Alessa." My personal theory is that Dark Alessa is _also_ the spirit of Silent Hill itself. In the games, the Order (the game cult is almost nothing like the one in the movie) worships a being they call God. "God" is likely spirit of the town. That said, she/it may be the Devil. Heather: "'God?' Are you sure you don't mean 'Devil?'" Vincent: "Whichever you like." -Silent Hill 3
lol I love watching you try and theorize what's going on because if that's not the true Silent Hill experience of trying to figure out what's going on and why. It's what I love about Silent Hill in general is how everything is linked and all the symbolism involved.
never played the games, but saw this in the theater. When those crazy babies showed up, it was a serious "What the fuck?" moment. I really like how the world changes when the doom siren sounds. Some of the horrific images feel like they could be paintings.
Ironically, the babies are in the original Japanese (and European?) version of the game, but were censored in America to be small monster things (I always assumed they represented children before finding out they were censored).
It's not by chance. The film is directly inspired by the game franchise (mainly game 1 & 2) and those games (in their graphic design) have deep root inspirations in horror artists like Francis Bacon. You could say the original material was literally inspired by paintings (part of it, at least).
Return To Silent Hill Release Date As of June 2023, the movie is still filming with no known release date. However, if Gans still sticks by his earlier statement, audiences can expect to see Return to Silent Hill at the end of 2023. If not, the movie will likely hit theaters in early to mid-2024.
Freaking love that game. It’s scared the 💩 out of me once you have to start using the flashlight. I even tried replaying in my 40s and still was too chicken 💩
I watched this recently, and it caused me to go on a journey to learn a lot of the silent hill lore. What's amazing is how much of the movie they changed from the game while really keeping to the main key points of the game. It made the movie feel genuinely like an AU silent hill adaptation rather than a quick cash grab.
TH-cam algorithm recommended your video about The Thing, and since then I've been watching all of your videos. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Brazil.
as a silent hill fan, while it’s not the best adaptation of the game, it REALLY is the best adaptation of the atmosphere we could get. it’s so well done and was so good at doing what it did, aspects of the movie are “canon” in silent hill
I like how you went in knowing nothing and slowly began figuring it out. Enjoyed seeing a fresh perspective not spoiled by knowing the basics of the concept.
I liked your reaction to this movie, seeing you genuinely stumped at all the random stuff made it awesome to see you put the puzzle pieces together and have the movie complete it, but just letting you know her name is Alessa cause her full first name is Alessandra which is comprised of two Ancient Greek words. The truth behind her name will leave you speechless.
I never played the games which is probably why I love this movie so much. Jodelle Ferland (Sharon/Alessa) gives a fantastic performance as the Darkness and the music hits the perfect balance between tragic and creepily anxious. The second one is... not great. While I like that the sequel has a bit more hope to it, most of the story feels very contrived and the visual style doesn't hold a candle to this movie.
It's been hilarious to listen to someone whos never played the game watch this and be completely lost. Silent hill has been my favorite franchise since the 90s mainly 1-4 🤷🏾. Great video btw
and off the top of my head i would suggest the movie "seconds apart" from 2011. i never hear anybody mention it, but i enjoyed it. or the movie "heartless" 2009 with jim sturgess.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. I've been pretty surprised by how the video turned out and how it's performed. Which means I probably will have to watch the second movie this same way. And from the sounds of a lot of comments it just isn't as good, but I guess I'll find out. Never heard of Heartless, but I did add it to my watchlist so I won't forget it.
it's been a long time since i so thoroughly enjoyed a creator's content. stumbling across your videos, especially the mist and the possum one, i am fully enamored with your channel. i'm going to do my best to help spread your content, you deserve so many more subs. thank you for bringing 'new' theories to older movies, and diving into more obscure titles.
I'm glad to hear it, and lucky you the I have a whole list of new theories on older movies that I'm working on and will be the next 10+ videos. Shutter island, Event Horizon, district 9, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, the invisible man, misery...
Pymid Head is "Judgement Incarnate" from the POV of the 2nd games main antag. he just went over so damn well hes kinda the "mascot" of the game. The Darkness was made in to a character for the film as a symbol of the "towns power"
I’m glad you’ve now experienced Silent Hill! I know it’s different from the games but so what? I’m always sad about Sybil, but happy that Sean Bean actually survives lol
And honestly I’m so jealous this is your first time watching it. It’s been a joy watching you watch it for the first time❤ Unfortunately the sequels are not worth the watch
I'm glad 😂 I'll be completely honest I wasn't sure if anyone would want to watch me react to a movie, especially since I didn't know how it would go. So it means a lot to read your comment. Now to find the games and play them to figure out all the actual lore.
@@PolterGibbst the sequel movie has a lot of flaws and issues, but it still has some good aspects too, you learn more about some of the lore from the first movie and more about the cult group too and new lore/content as well too (while it also jumbles up some stuff too, making it even more confusing to piece together and understand), but it's still a good movie, it really needs to be watched, the sequel, with all of its flaws and issues, there's good aspects to it too, as it's also good as a movie, like this first movie, but it's a bit different and convoluted
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 it was horrible it was a guided tour of cheap latex and jump scares with a soul calibur rip off ending, all the terror and unnerving of the first was lost in the sequel it was so bad it put an end to the franchise, the female lead and the mannequin doll were the only good to come out of this film.
Let me first start by saying I am truly enjoying your content please continue to do these movie breakdowns. While I am a fan of the Silent Hill franchise I always thought that the movies were a bit lack luster. If I may ask, I'd love for you to review and breakdown a movie when you have an opportunity, the movie in question is "Session 9". This is one of my favorite psychological horror film and would love to hear your take. If I may add please watch the credits because there is some stuff there that is relevant to the film itself. Thank you in advance.
I have been looking for this movie for months now. From what I've heard and read I think it will end up being a favorite of mine. Whenever I do find it I'll probably make a full thought out breakdown instead of first time watch like this one. Also thank you, glad you like the videos
Movie idea - The Howling. Most will say An American Werewolf in London as a werewolf movie - and it's great - but I prefer The Howling to all others. Love the channel, love the reviews and deep dives, can't wait for the next.
I love The Howling. Love Me some werewolf movies. Growing up the main 3 I remember are The Howling, Silver Bullet, and The Wolf Man (the original). I have a random 4 movie pack from Walmart with all newer werewolf movies, need to watch them to see if there any good.
😂 I was so surprised when editing this because of it. I'd say it's because I've seen "too many" psychological horror movies. (No such thing as too many though)
22:00 Time stamping this one because it's a big piss off for the game fans. This is Pyramid Head, the single most iconic enemy in the franchise and a character that should never have appeared in more content than his original game. What this monster represents was specific to that game's MC, and he doesn't appear in the first game at all, though he does appear in 1 of the later games as well as his original games and fans were pissed he appeared in that. I have no issues with his head not being red, though.
(Spoilers) They misused and misunderstood pyramid head..he had no business being in this story but in a story of silent hill 2 where he was just a reflection of a character names James after (spoilers)...murdering his wife
The town in thos movie is based of a town called Centralia in Pennsylvania. It been burning since 1962. I live about 1.5 hours from there. Visited it once. Weird ghost town.
I have seen it, and it is actually on my list to cover. I actually think it is the video after next; Shutter Island, Event Horizon, District 9, Tucker and Dale vs Evil... And I will also have to cover another Sam Neill movie, In The Mouth of Madness.
@@cvrkii I think at the rate everything is going the shutter island video will he finished on Saturday. Then just depends on if I have to deal with copyright and all that stuff for when it will be up to watch. Getting close, biggest project I've ever done.
This movie was my first exposure to the series, and theres still something so viscerally scary and grotesque about this movie. Having played most of the games now, it absolutely captures this from the games
To answer some of your questions. Silent Hill was way before achievements became a thing. But you did find different drawings and scribbles and stuff as part of puzzles. There have always been maps in Silent Hill, they were way more detailed than a line with some names though. They were actually looking like a regular old map, and whenever you would encounter some obstacle, it would be written on the map with a pen as you progressed. You would have to find the maps though. Until then you were blind. About Pyramid Head. This story is mostly an adaptation of the first Silent Hill, and Pyramid Head was actually not around back then. He was first introduced in the second game. So him being in this movie actually doesn't make sense. Especially when you know that Pyramid Head is a manifestation of guilt, that the protagonist of the second game is carrying. The sole purpose of Pyramid Head in this movie is fan service. Was a huge Silent Hill fan back then. Still am, but this adaptation wasn't the best. I did like the movie for what it was though. Remember seeing it twice in the cinema. I even wrote a metal cover of the theme, which is on my channel. Check it out if you're into stuff like that.
Even though the movie heavily deviated from the source material, I still love it's overarching message about the dangers of religious fanaticism. How someone who believes they're doing something wrong for the right reason only ends up creating a hell of their own design. Dalia in the game sacrificing Alessa to bring about Paradise, only to trap the town in a nightmarish hellscape. Christabella in the movie sacrificing Alessa to purge their community of "sin", only to trap the entire congregation in a purgatory. It's a nice real world reflection of how regressive conservatives and their persecutions only end up making the world worse for themselves and everybody around them.
I had a good time with the Silent Hill films the first one especially was creepy and atmospheric. I only played the first Silent Hill game on ps1 when i was 10/11 and it terrified me lol really enjoyed the reaction dude 😊
Thank you 😂 I had to take an allergy pill half way through recording, still had a lot of sneezes get through. Had to be 50 or so in the unedited recording. 🤣 More videos on the way, I actually have a full plan and already know what the next 11 or so videos are on. Super excited to share what all I've been cooking up.
Actually learned about Cemetery Mam from the comments of an old video. Luckily to the guy found it here on TH-cam so I could watch. "I knew you'd understand" is still one of the funniest lines I've ever heard in a movie. Then that ending is amazing. Nothing outside of Love and Death. Now I'm gonna have to go rewatch it. Also thank you.
@@PolterGibbst Same! Can't wait to re-watch now. I loved Gnaghi and Francesco Dellamorte, I love the etymology of that name! "I should have known it. The rest of the world doesn't exist."
Silent Hill is like a self adapting purgatory. You aren't dead but the town has some form of magical power that draws people to it. Recommend you play the Silent Hill 2 Remake, it's a near masterpiece.
19:08 my man, there was literally a text on the wall saying 'dare you' with an arrow pointing at the corpse' mouth, you even read it out loud 😂 to shed some light on what happened in the end - they didn't as much 'die' as got stuck in the fog world, a parallel reality that dark alessa created based off the city. when dark alessa became one with sharon, the otherworld expanded with sharon's memories. mind you, this isn't exactly how it worked in the games. there was no 'dark alessa' - there was alessa (who was always a psychic), cheryl (the second part of alessa's soul which she split to ruin her mother's plans to make her birth a 'god'), and alessa's astral projection. and the town itself also had supernatural powers which amplified alessa's powers and projected her nightmares and fears onto the town, creating the fog world and the otherworld.
I love this movie. I think it's very true to the spirit of the Silent Hill games, while telling its own version of the story. The later games even stole the 'shifting' effect from this film, because it was that good. Unfortunately they really dropped the ball with the sequel.
So when I saw this movie I didn’t even know it was a game. It was wild to interpret without any context. My conclusion was that Silent Hill was caught between the land of the living and Hell. And these characters were in limbo. And that the fog carried pockets of hell. So as the cloud/mist moved through silent hill they would occasionally enter in and out of hell. So they would see what hell these people were experiencing. And these cult members were all in purgatory.
Now you need to watch Silent Hill Revelations the sequel. It's really good, and the pace is quicker than the first one, and honestly, I'd say it's my favorite of the two.
While it wasn't a great adaptation of the games, it was a solid horror movie. And it stands head and shoulders above its _abysmal_ sequel. Also, it's worth mentioning that this movie is responsible for all the "Silent Hill was inspired by Centralia, Pennsylvania" discourse. In this movie, it is inspired by that. In the original game series, it definitely was not. Also, shout out to Sean Bean for surviving a movie where he would've almost certainly died under any other circumstances. Fun little bit of detail from the game: All the streets are named after authors. Particularly, authors whose works inspired the creators to make Silent Hill. You can see Bachman on the sign there. There's also Bradbury, Matheson, Koontz, and Bloch, among so many others.
8:30 The quip about the tornado sirens in Arkansas reminded me of the time when tornadoes hit Little Rock in 2016, I think, and a friend of mine died, and me and college friends from our student society helped with the cleanup, especially since we just had a tornado here in Ohio a couple weeks ago. RIP Rebekah Tittle.
I like to imagine that in this interpretation of Silent Hill that Pyramid Head manifested as a dark mirror of Alessa's father: unknown and therefore masked/faceless, who wasn't there to protect her in life so now in death hunts down the people she dragged into her nightmare/hell
Glad I found this channel man, great vibe. I really liked a lot of this movie but the main character really kinda ruined it for me. I know silent hill characters aren’t typically very expressive but she was showing so little fear throughout the whole movie that it really made it hard for me to feel scared. Overall a pretty sick movie tho
If it wasn’t tied to Silent Hill, it would be your standard cheesy indie horror movie. And it’d be fine like that. As is, it is tied to the franchise. And there’s reasons for the rage. 1.) This movie was the catalyst for putting Pyramid Head in everything. He wasn’t in the first game and shouldn’t have been in anything after the second game for narrative reasons. 2.) It was Cheryl. Not Sharon. 3.) Chris DaSilva should be Harry Mason. 4.) Rose didn’t exist. 5.) Cheryl’s mother died before the events of the game. 6.) I point out 3-5 to bring up the fact that Christophe Gans, the movie’s director who’s been brought back for the reboot series for Netflix said that “A father wouldn’t chase after their child. A father wouldn’t be capable of the same level of love that a mother would be.” And that the fact that Harry in thethe games actually cared about his daughter made him “womanly” 😒😒 (Thank god that fucker doesn’t have any kids since that’s how he feels) 7.) There was no Christabella. It was Dahlia that murdered her daughter. 8.) The relationships between Harry and Cheryl, and Dahlia and Alessa were meant to be specifically opposite of each other to show that mothers aren’t always nurturing and fathers aren’t always distant. 9.) The other world happened when Alessa’s psychic powers mixed with the supernatural powers of the town to turn her nightmares into reality. There was no demon/devil/Satan/etc. 10.) Officer Gucci didn’t exist. 11.) They completely left out Dr. Kauffman and the secret drug trade going on in the town, which is what Cybil was actually investigation in the first place. 12.) Lisa Garland (the crying nurse) was completely fucking robbed. Just look up “Lisa Garland transformation” and watch that. That silent FMV conveyed more emotion in a tragic side character than this entire hour and a half movie. 13.) There was no pedo janitor. Dahlia and her cult impregnated Alessa. She wasn’t assaulted by some creepy old man. It was her mother. And that’s just a *few* of the changes 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
As much as I do like this movie there's no arguing anything you said. Me as a giant resident evil fan totally understands where you're coming lol from.
The first silent hill movie feels like you’re in a cut scene of a video game. Like it’s not actually good movie and you’re just waiting for it to load your next checkpoint but it’s interesting enough to watch and wait to see the next scene. It’s definitely more watchable than a lot of movies now a days
You're not alone bro, I wouldn't admit this to friends or family but I don't know anything about Silent Hill either. Played the first game for about 1 hour when it originally released before i got too scared and never returned.
I love seeing people watch this, that have no idea what to expect from this IP. Silent Hill is a wild ride. The games are absolutely horrifying (The first three at least). It was interesting watching a religious mans take on this. Something I wasn't aware of going into it, as this is the first video of yours I've seen. It added a nice layer of complexity to your reaction though. I was all for it! The aesthetic for the town Silent Hill in the movie is actually based on a real life town here in Pennsylvania. The town is called Centralia. The coal fires underground have been burning for a long time, and show no signs of stopping.
The deal with pyramid head was that he was the manifestation of guilt of the main character of the second game over killing his wife. Silent Hill is basically a personal hell and the stories of the two games are unrelated besides taking place in Silent Hill. Why was he in this movie about the first game? Fan service.
I would have looked up the plot details of the first game. The movie is mostly a standalone story, but knowing some of the lore makes it much easier to grasp going in why they approached it the way they did. Granted it defeats the purpose of a blind watch, but makes the movie easier to enjoy in my opinion. Also, yes. You do find some of her drawings in the game that point you to your objective.
Always good to see someone who hasn't played the game watch the movie. When I first saw it I immediately thought, "Oh that was fun! It did not feel like Silent Hill but it was a fun movie! So I'm glad at least to hear that sentiment echoed by others. I am curious about how you'd view the sequel. It was... different.
Not a good adaptation but still a solid spooky movie with excellent practical effects. Edit- collecting drawings is in #5, which is more of a fanfiction than an official game, but not in the original 4. This movie is mostly inspired by game #1 with monsters from both 1 and 2. The first drawing is a plot point in #1. Play the games tho they're masterpieces
Looks like I'll have to. And thanks for the explanation. I'm assuming that means pyramid head is from the second game and that's why there aren't any answers about him. Just that he is there, which to me is still pretty cool.
@@PolterGibbst Correct sir. Pyramid Head is from 2. He's a fan favorite and pretty much the face of the monsters. When someone says Silent Hill, most think of him
@@ravenalexandria6642 makes sense, I mean even I knew who he was. So I can see why they would throw him into the movie. Now just to play 1 and 2 to actually have all of my questions answered. Just got to find the games first
@@PolterGibbst I do hope you film it but set no expectations. I just would love to see someone go through those games again with fresh eyes. Best of luck. Probably easier to try finding a PC version or trying to get your hands on a Playstation 1
"Rose! Where are you AT!?" Bro I said the same thing when I watched this movie. TBH, "Silent Hill Movie" is a very fun Easter Egg kind of movie because it crammed like 3 games into it, but yeah. The pictures, the maps (that you have to memorize, you don't get to take them with you usually), the pyrimid head and nurses, the siren and darkness, Very true to the gaming experience.

Silent Hill is my favorite franchise of all time. Gaming and horror included. It just is the most eerie personal feeling and atmosphere. Also the legendary soundtrack. I’m from near the real life Silent Hill in West Virginia.
Loved the games and loved the movie. I can see the movie as an amazing retelling to give us something we haven’t seen, which I thought was awesome even though many just wanted a point for point game-to-movie remake. Don’t like the second movie though. The second one is curious, but an absolute mess.
I love this movie so much, i would watch it every day for months back when i was a teen. Do yourself a favor and watch the making of! The pratical effects are amazing. I loved your watch through review and you made me laugh as well!

Ironically Sean Bean looks more like the main character in the game.
Shocking US accent though, just let him use his English accent
@@danielclark-hughes692 Harry's American. It's Sean Bean doing a US accent or you get a different actor; there's no in between when you have an established franchise where the character being a typical resident of their country is an important distinction of who they are. Making Harry British would be like making Sherlock talk like a cowpoke.
I thought Sean Bean looked very much Like James Sunderland from the of sh 2
@@frankcastle7082 The movie does take elements from both 1 and 2, so that could be why
As someone who has played the game, the interpretation is very entertaining as a stand alone project
My only BUT about the movie was introducing pyramid head, but the tied bathroom man was a nice add to the lore
They couldn’t make it EXACTLY like the game
@@PolterGibbst If I'm frank, it doesn't stay to the word of the story, but I feel it stays to the spirit of it. This is one of the few video game adaptions that felt, to me, that it got its source material even if it just took concepts and ran with a new story using them. Considering the amount of complexities that the game had, I think I'd prefer this over them attempting and failing to more directly adapt it. They tried to go back on track for the second movie (adapting the third game which was a direct sequel to the story of the first) and it was, imo, a disaster for it.
I heavily recommend Jacob's Ladder, it was the movie that actually inspired Silent Hill to begin with.
Tbh this Silent Hill Movie as a stand alone project is actually pretty good
I agree. The film can stand on its own. Unadulterated of course... much more frightening! 🫣
guess you never played the game because i consider myself lucky to have played the games back when they came out and the experiences i had were in a good way some of the most horrific and scary ones when it comes to multimedia like games or movies etc. but that movie was just lame and a wasted opportunity to create a movie masterpiece tbh
@@shitfucked its almost the original comment said "as a stand alone project"
I really think this movie is best watched divorced from the source material.
As an adaptation, it sucks. As a movie in its own right? I honestly really like it.
What happened to Cybil still upsets me 😭 She deserved better. All she wanted to do was protect an innocent little girl. I love this film. It might not be a good “adaption” but it’s a fantastic horror adventure story. I love a good female protagonist, and this film had so many positive and negative representations of the feminine. On a side note, there are a few great video essays about female rage, particularly in the horror genre. Something to watch in your own time, if you’re interested.
Seriously, just when you star really liking her, they kill her. But they do it in such an eexxttrreemmeellyy painful way :(
And the director just wanted women because he likes looking at women.
Irony. :)
Lol it bothered me in the movie bc sometimes they said Alessa and other times they said Alissa 🙃 thanks for confirming the correct pronunciation fr

Because of this, Silent Hill has no control of pyramidhead.
revelations was pants really really bad
Cop busted her ass trying, though
I think he's in the movie bc he's a popular character and the director thought people would want to see him
Not quiet right.
Cant wait.

just from the movie content (as I know it differs from the games), some of my understanding:
-----------
yes, despite her severely burnt body (from the cult burning her alive) (as punishment for the towns' and its cults' evil, the alter/table that Alessa Gillespie was being burned alive on, was knocked over, and its fires would burn not just the building, but the entire town), Alessa Gillespie didn't die, being rescued by the guy-cop with the gloves over his burnt hands (who Rose's husband interacted with), and taken care of as best as could be, by the hospital's nurses...
---------
in her abysmal state, Alessa Gillespie had nothing but hatred and contempt...
"enters" the Devil itself (not merely a demon) (there's lots of demons, the cult actually worships one, which you learn about in the sequel movie, but this is the Devil itself), offering its "contract" to Alessa Gillespie, which she so eagerly accepts...
the Devil gives Alessa some of its power, for her to get her revenge on the town and the cult, in exchange for her soul (revenge/vengeance for Alessa's soul), by merging a part of itself with hateful burnt Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", but for the Devil to merge a part of itself with Alessa, all of the good, innocence, purity, and etc that was still within Alessa, deep inside of her, had to get out of her, as such "light and goodness" couldn't be sharing the same space with the "darkness and evil" of the Devil itself... which created "Light Alessa", a baby whom would get adopted by Rose and her husband (whatever his name, lol), whom they would name "Sharon"
this is how/why "Sharon" had her dreams/visions and etc, how the Devil could "talk" and interact with her, as part of the Devil was merged with Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", one half of Alessa, and the other half of Alessa, is "Sharon", the "Light Alessa"
once/after the hateful burnt Alessa Gillespie "signed" the Devil's "contract", all of the "sinners" just disappeared as mentioned by that guy-cop with the gloves covering his burnt hands, as they were transported to Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), with Dark Alessa creating a fake silent hill there, so the "sinners" would still think they're alive within their silent hill town in the real world... as she gets her revenge on them, having them suffer for eternity...
except, she couldn't get her revenge upon those within the church, as it was holy grounds, even being within Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), and being (or despite being) the Devil itself, it must honor its contracts, and so, the Devil had to find a way to get to those "sinners" hiding within the church...
the Devil's plan involved Rose... not only getting the revenge for Alessa, but also in going after, Light Alessa ("Sharon") too, what luck for the Devil... getting to "kill two birds with one stone"... but what is the Devil's interest with "Sharon" (Light Alessa).... hmm.... what happens at near the end of the movie, "Sharon" (Light Alessa) opens her eyes... looking at the Devil, and it smiles back at her...
and there's a lot more to explain, but not going to get into it... too much work...
-----------------
pyramid head, was assigned by the Devil, as/to-be the protector of Dark Alessa, which thus extended to those Dark Alessa cared about and wanted to protect, like her mother, Dahlia Gillespie, and Rose too, as Rose was trying to help Dark Alessa and cared about Dark Alessa, as well as also, the Devil needing Rose as well, in order to honor it's "contract" with Alessa, to get revenge, on the last of the "sinners" hiding in the church... and so, protecting Rose with in both Dark Alessa's and the Devil's interests, and so Pyramid Head protected Rose too
The director confirmed that "Dark Alessa" is Alessa's evil given physical form. She's Alessa _inner demon._ The script had her explicitly state that she is Alessa.
"And who are you?"
"Alessa."
My personal theory is that Dark Alessa is _also_ the spirit of Silent Hill itself. In the games, the Order (the game cult is almost nothing like the one in the movie) worships a being they call God. "God" is likely spirit of the town. That said, she/it may be the Devil.
Heather: "'God?' Are you sure you don't mean 'Devil?'"
Vincent: "Whichever you like."
-Silent Hill 3
Pyramid Head was not created by Alessa. Unless you mean in movies storyline.
Pyramid head is a personification of a subconscious want for punishment created when James Sunderland killed his wife
lol I love watching you try and theorize what's going on because if that's not the true Silent Hill experience of trying to figure out what's going on and why.

I watched the movie in the background while listening to you at the same time so I could try to understand it more!!! Thank you for all the laughs
I'm getting major Wendigoon vibes from you, which is always a good thing.
I'll take this huge compliment. 😂
Did just end up in a Mista GG video... kinda 😅 (long story but it's on his second channel)
I love that you are proud of your biblical knowledge!!!!❤
You know Jesus and the Father are sooo proud of that boy!!🙏❤
I never played the games which is probably why I love this movie so much. Jodelle Ferland (Sharon/Alessa) gives a fantastic performance as the Darkness and the music hits the perfect balance between tragic and creepily anxious.
The second one is... not great. While I like that the sequel has a bit more hope to it, most of the story feels very contrived and the visual style doesn't hold a candle to this movie.
It's been hilarious to listen to someone whos never played the game watch this and be completely lost. Silent hill has been my favorite franchise since the 90s mainly 1-4 🤷🏾. Great video btw
nice. i liked the real-time deduction and profound insight into biblical stuff is a rare skill in reaction videos, but i dig it.
and off the top of my head i would suggest the movie "seconds apart" from 2011. i never hear anybody mention it, but i enjoyed it.
or the movie "heartless" 2009 with jim sturgess.
@@PolterGibbstHeck yea your doing Tucker and Dale!
Its so great to see someone watch this movie for the first time. I used to watch it constantly as a kid because I was so into Silent Hill. Great vid!
It’s been a joy watching you watch it for the first time❤
Unfortunately the sequels are not worth the watch
I'm glad 😂
I'll be completely honest I wasn't sure if anyone would want to watch me react to a movie, especially since I didn't know how it would go.
Dog Soldiers is another good one. From the same guy who made The Descent.
This movie is my autumn comfort film. And that fact that Bobby didn’t die In this film is so incredible
bro at 24:10 you almost explain the plot perfectly without even knowing you did it lmao. love it.
Watching you watch this, especially completely in the dark about the series, is such a pure joy man. 😂🙏🏾
The town in thos movie is based of a town called Centralia in Pennsylvania. It been burning since 1962. I live about 1.5 hours from there. Visited it once. Weird ghost town.
🤔 that's really neat. I'll have to keep it in mind if I ever head up that way.
event horizon is the only movie to every actually scare me. If you haven't seen it, a live commentary would be awesome.
I have seen it, and it is actually on my list to cover. I actually think it is the video after next; Shutter Island, Event Horizon, District 9, Tucker and Dale vs Evil...
And I will also have to cover another Sam Neill movie, In The Mouth of Madness.
@@PolterGibbst Still looking forward to Shutter Island deep dive :)
@@cvrkii I think at the rate everything is going the shutter island video will he finished on Saturday. Then just depends on if I have to deal with copyright and all that stuff for when it will be up to watch. Getting close, biggest project I've ever done.
Still hard to believe that the same guy who directed Event Horizon also directed the Resident Evil movies.. 😂
Im so excited for Return to Silent Hill. A new movie based on the second game directed by same guy who made this one
This movie was my first exposure to the series, and theres still something so viscerally scary and grotesque about this movie. Having played most of the games now, it absolutely captures this from the games
I'm so jealous! I would love to see Silent Film for the first time. Truly such a genuinely fun flick.
Interesting side note:
Sharon can also be spelled Charon, which is the ferryman of the River Styx, going to Hades.
Bro please keep it up man !!!! Great shiz!!! 💯💯💯💯
God bless you for the sneezes fam
Thank you 😂 I had to take an allergy pill half way through recording, still had a lot of sneezes get through. Had to be 50 or so in the unedited recording. 🤣
More videos on the way, I actually have a full plan and already know what the next 11 or so videos are on. Super excited to share what all I've been cooking up.
You did a great job putting alot of pieces together
The artwork is a part of the clues needed to find the child in the game
As soon as you mentioned "Cemetery Man", I subscribed. Your horror knowledge has impressed me. Kudos!!
Francisco Delamorte
@@PolterGibbst Same! Can't wait to re-watch now. I loved Gnaghi and Francesco Dellamorte, I love the etymology of that name! "I should have known it. The rest of the world doesn't exist."
i love how much pratical effects they used
Silent Hill is like a self adapting purgatory. You aren't dead but the town has some form of magical power that draws people to it. Recommend you play the Silent Hill 2 Remake, it's a near masterpiece.
The air raid siren announces the change into rust world.
19:08 my man, there was literally a text on the wall saying 'dare you' with an arrow pointing at the corpse' mouth, you even read it out loud 😂
to shed some light on what happened in the end - they didn't as much 'die' as got stuck in the fog world, a parallel reality that dark alessa created based off the city. when dark alessa became one with sharon, the otherworld expanded with sharon's memories.
mind you, this isn't exactly how it worked in the games. there was no 'dark alessa' - there was alessa (who was always a psychic), cheryl (the second part of alessa's soul which she split to ruin her mother's plans to make her birth a 'god'), and alessa's astral projection. and the town itself also had supernatural powers which amplified alessa's powers and projected her nightmares and fears onto the town, creating the fog world and the otherworld.
It's really good, and the pace is quicker than the first one, and honestly, I'd say it's my favorite of the two.
its awful
Nice Cemetery Man reference! Glad you chose this movie, I really enjoy this one.
Yeah, if you've seen cemetery man you have definitely watched mental twister movies
45:26 is when you realized you effed up deciding to watch this movie 😆
I just found your channel today and am really enjoying it man. Haven’t seen this movies in years
As a video game adaption, I'd say that it's a pretty good movie and pretty underrated.
I like to imagine that in this interpretation of Silent Hill that Pyramid Head manifested as a dark mirror of Alessa's father: unknown and therefore masked/faceless, who wasn't there to protect her in life so now in death hunts down the people she dragged into her nightmare/hell
i interpreted it that way too!
Love to find someone who has a strong Christian background kinda giving a Christian take on supernatural type media.
As someone who has seen the movie before any of the games I quiet enjoy this
If it wasn’t tied to Silent Hill, it would be your standard cheesy indie horror movie.
A father wouldn’t be capable of the same level of love that a mother would be.” And that the fact that Harry in thethe games actually cared about his daughter made him “womanly” 😒😒 (Thank god that fucker doesn’t have any kids since that’s how he feels)
7.) There was no Christabella.
@@mikeabney2527 Oh no. RE. Don’t even get me STARTED on that abomination 🤣🤣
The first silent hill movie feels like you’re in a cut scene of a video game. Like it’s not actually good movie and you’re just waiting for it to load your next checkpoint but it’s interesting enough to watch and wait to see the next scene. It’s definitely more watchable than a lot of movies now a days
How the hell do you not have more subs??? I love your vids
You're not alone bro, I wouldn't admit this to friends or family but I don't know anything about Silent Hill either. Played the first game for about 1 hour when it originally released before i got too scared and never returned.
Kids these days: Omg it's Andrea from The Walking Dead!
Real ones: Omg it's Sybill Bennet from Silent Hill!
Way to spoil the second game for him dude
Man I love this commentary about the actual Bible versus you add in. It shows how people try to twist the words to suit their own desires.
