Reminds me of how everytime Pat sees any mansion in any movie or game, he's like "OH! THAT'S A RESIDENT EVIL REFERENCE!" because RE invented mansions with stairs.
I've never heard about The Lone Wolf in my life, but the moment Pat started yapping about it being a The Witcher rip-off I knew it. I knew that if I looked it up it would turn out that the books were published years before the Geralt of Rivia saga.
Quick look at the dates suggest that Lone Wolf started a couple years before the Witcher series. And since Witcher was only in Polish (and then other Eastern Europe languages) for many years and Joe Dever is from the UK, it's probably safe to say the two series developed independently of each other.
+Xeno426 Yeah, I think Pat got the wrong date. From what I can tell, the first Lone Wolf book came out in 1984... I forget if stuff like the meditation was in the books or if the game is taking influence from the Witcher... I think the design could be from most things really... But yeah, what grasp I have on either of the stories, I don't think they are that similar... Different formats too... I dunno... Just kinda standard fantasy stuff going on lol Ah well, it might be fun to look into the Lone Wolf books again... I remember going through a bunch of them as a kid... Cheating of course >_> keeping that last page and assuming I passed any dice rolls, or whatever the books used... Can't remember what happened in them though lol
Apparently while the earliest Lone Wolf narrative content started coming out around 87, the world it's set in was developed as a D&D setting called Magnamund in like 77. I'm thinking this is a case of two authors happened to come up with very similar ideas at the same time without realizing the other existed.
***** Oh I know. Pat is just being wrong as always wanting this to be a Witcher rip off. Then again it would make sense that they make this game now that the Witcher games are popular. They do rip off elements of its HUD.
A white guy with weapon skills and magic powers who takes the sign of the wolf? Noooooo, that's a totally original, unheard-of power fantasy idea. It's totally impossible that this combination of fantasy tropes and traits that everyone agrees is cool could just be mixed together in absentia of any foreign influence!
Man, this reminds me of when I used to actually read the "Choose your own adventure" books and I used to do the equivalent of save-scumming which was "keep a finger on the last choice you made to bookmark it", so I ended up reading those books while holding it with all of my fingers jammed into the pages like an idiot. But anyways, watching games turning into books turning into games turning into video games is fuckin' weird.
+jjj7790 same here, loved those goosebumps books. i would read every possible ending, and then when i was done i would flip the pages in order making sure i read every possible end
I get that Pat is saying that the in-game aesthetic and UI design are what has been patterned after the success of the Witcher, and not the story...but chill the hell out, dude. You're being the archetypal annoying fanboy.
+Joey C and the first published Lone Wolf book predates The Witcher's first by 8 years. And the Witcher is already just a conglomeration of other fairy tales and stories shoved into a universe. Get over it nerd.
23:00 It's a visual novel, ya dorks. Also, Liam, what the hell? Why'd you start following Pat's bullshit? You were supposed to be the stubborn youngling.
phoenixsplash135 I can give them the UI (however, I'll still mention that the style is very common in wolf motifs, I'd wager that CD Projekt looked for inspiration from such motifs too), but everything else? People actually meditate like that, it even has its own name - seiza meditation (without the bench, however). And TV Tropes has a page on "Animal Eyes", so, yeah... Maybe they got influenced, but they were probably just thinking about how to make the character an even bigger edgelord. Could also be that Joe Dever wrote everything from the animal eyes to the meditating, if anyone here has read it, mind clueing us in?
"That's exactly how Geralt meditates" ..... Pat, The Witcher copies actual meditation positions from our real world. If a gryphon shows up later would you claim that's a copy too?
A magical warrior with an animal theme? In a medieval fantasy setting? Can't believe they ripped off the Witcher, the only historical example of that in all fiction. Magic, swords, and animals are an EXCLUSIVELY Polish idea wtf
+Jeedy Jay Especially in games which they kind of should know. the only reason i even batted an eye when i saw Witcher 3 was because people were freaking out. it ls just like your standard Eurpean fantasy game otherwise.
I used to read Lone Wolf as a kid in the 90's they were RPG Adventure books. The 1st one came out 2 years before the 1st Witcher book. I'll give you the design is clearly trying to cash in on the similarity to Witcher but plot--wise Lone Wolf was 1st.
+Rob Sherriff Wait this is based off of Lone Wolf?! I remember those books, the combat was way more advanced than fighting fantasy and actually pretty robust. EDIT also they were out in the 80s, never thought of Witcher as a ripoff but all that meditation stuff was in the lonewolf books. So witcher is an Elrick and Lonewolf ripoff lol, as well as being REALLY overrated.
Dag yo, this game is got my attention by the throat from that blended story and stats character builder and then just continued pulling me in. As someone who likes his exposition on the heavier side, this seems like a game up my alley.
So parallel design I think is what happened here with the two stories, considering the original Witcher additions were short stories written by an economist, as I believe that's what the author of the series was before become a writer, in a very different country before the internet was a big thing. I don't think anyone ripped anyone off, they just both had similar thoughts.
+Mitchell T Eh, not really, at least where the books are concerned. The original Lone Wolf gamebooks make no comment about the main character's appearance (to my knowledge), since he's the player's avatar only really addressed as "you", and his appearance in this game was conceived for this game. Of course, you're still right in that Geralt's and Lone Wolf's apprearances have no bearing on each other, other than the fact that they both draw from the same iconic, archetypical image of a magical, less physically-endowed swordsman (who is quite often pale or albino) that you can find a lot of in fiction. The image was originally spawned by the success of Elric of Melnibone, an albino swordsman with sorcerous powers, who was made by Michael Moorcock in the 60's. After that, many, many works of fiction have featured aesthetically similar characters. It's kind of like how Conan spawned a slew of barbarian characters, to the point that it eventually became a cultural symbol that is used without actually directly referencing the original work any more. I.E becoming archetypical.
Any particular reason why Louis C.K. Lite is calling this game a Witcher ripoff? I bet if he watched the Duel Masters anime, he'd call it a Magic the Gathering ripoff without looking up the manga and realizing that Duel Masters was an MtG comic book.
I might well pick this up, the series was a nice alternative to the Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson CYA books (Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Forest of Doom, ect) that I collected many years ago. And the presentation...well it's based on the art style of the books themselves. Wasn't getting any Witcher vibes at all, the Lone Wolf CYA books predate the Witcher novels by 8 years or so. Love the Witcher stuff as well. There are also some very good adaptions of the Steve Jackson Sorcery books out as well.
+Andy M Well, the first Witcher publication was in 86,or something, I think... But yeah, the Lone Wolf Books seem to have started in 84... Not sure if they always had that exact art style, but you might be right... Some versions of the covers I've found from googling maybe aren't too far off... I wish I could remember from when I actually used to play through a bunch of the Lone Wolf books when I was little... Used to borrow them from the library ^_^;; Might be fun to revisit them... I think you can get most of them free online now, though yeah, it's probably more fun with the physical books... I believe they are out of print, but I'm finding them on amazon for totally reasonable prices... But yeah, some group got the permission to distribute many of the books for free online. It's nice to have the option.
Little did Pat know that the Witcher is itself a rip-off of Elric of Melnibone. Turns out the concept of a white haired warrior who's super good at fucking people up and has some relation to wolves is a common fantasy trope.
Holy crap. I remember the Lone Wolf series. It was a series of "Choose your own adventure" novel that was at my high school. I remember they had the adventure of being one of the few that had a somewhat sensible story and not just random stuff.
+Ghost Samurai it is good ..if this game was like release 6 years ago or something it would be on the same level like on graphics , not that there is a problem with the graphics. .not a problem at all ..its the game play and the fun is whats important . this is how a series get popular. with a great gameplay , even if its not top notch graphics . them they get money and a sequel .
+Ghost Samurai if they realease like a kind of predescessor of the witcher series ABOUT THIS GUY like , a really good game ,I mean a game like this but with a bigger budgjet ,and more DINAMIC rather them this book aproach . would actually be great , to be honest.
+Hunter Knight It was the fucking shit also. It hurts to hear Pat bitch on this saying it looks so much like the witcher :( (love them both...and Pat I guess)
This book was a choose your adventure book with stats +inventory that you write on a piece of paper. Good to see it being translated into video game version
the Lone Wolf books predate the Geralt series by a few years, and were both published in their own locales without translation (at the time). that said, this totally steals UI and asset influence from the games. even then, its really fun to play on the Switch.
UndisclosedIdiot Hey, that's one more than I'd experienced; usually it's just a bin for shit that wouldn't have a chance to sell anywhere else, even the stuff that's considered decent. This isn't my kind of game, but the quality is obvious, and I actually think the novel format between action scenes is a cool idea. This is a good use of its platform.
The battles literally look like Strength of the Sword Ultimate only with weird turn-based stuff. That enclosed little town arena is like literally the same as one of the arenas... like they stole the arena and then put their weird battle system into it.
Holy shit, I knew that this title sounded familiar but I didn't realize it until they started talking about the Kai Disciplines. Lone Wolf is this weird RPG/Choose Your Own Adventure book hybrid from the 80s. I once bought a huge stack of them from my church's donated book drive and marathon read them. They were like a CYOA on steroids, where every other choice would kill you and sometimes even the good choice would kill you if you didn't have the right skills, and skills retained from earlier books so if you didn't take a skill from like book 2 it would fuck you over in book 5. Shit was nuts.
I remember this game. The old installments used to be even more text heavy with less interactivity. It was one of the earliest series I'd seen that had a save transfer feature, but the engine was practically made for scumming and cheating.
Gan Of course, it also exists in the Middle East, India, Southern China, Mongolia and tons of other locations. But do you really think Pat implied anything but eastern Europe? We're talking about Pat here.
From Wikipedia: "Lone Wolf is a series of 28 gamebooks, created by Joe Dever and initially illustrated by Gary Chalk. The series began publishing in July 1984 and sold more than 9 million copies worldwide."
OH! I think I read one of the Lone Wolf books once. They're like Choose Your Own adventure types, pretty neat actually and not nearly as much of a Witcher rip-off as Pat makes it out to be. Neat that there's a game now, I definitely want to buy it.
While the Last Wolf books precede the Witcher books, it's pretty clear that the GAME took inspiration from the Witcher game. I mean, just look at the UI.
Reminds me of how everytime Pat sees any mansion in any movie or game, he's like "OH! THAT'S A RESIDENT EVIL REFERENCE!" because RE invented mansions with stairs.
Rojaha Stairs weren't invented until the early 2000s
Actually, the Lone Wolf books were first published in 1984, before The Witcher. So suck it, Pat. Not everything revolves around your Polish man-crush.
+Isaac Morrison They actually find that out IN the video though...
+Isaac Morrison He fucking looked it up and said it himself jesus fuck learn to pay at least a little bit of attention.
simkas He got the year wrong and came to the opposite conclusion, so, enjoy that advice of yours.
+Green Sanic ...no, he still tried to imply one was a rip-off of the other.
I've never heard about The Lone Wolf in my life, but the moment Pat started yapping about it being a The Witcher rip-off I knew it. I knew that if I looked it up it would turn out that the books were published years before the Geralt of Rivia saga.
+Mantis47
You can set your clock to Pat being wrong.
+Mantis47 The first was published in 1984.
Quick look at the dates suggest that Lone Wolf started a couple years before the Witcher series. And since Witcher was only in Polish (and then other Eastern Europe languages) for many years and Joe Dever is from the UK, it's probably safe to say the two series developed independently of each other.

***** Oh I know. Pat is just being wrong as always wanting this to be a Witcher rip off. Then again it would make sense that they make this game now that the Witcher games are popular. They do rip off elements of its HUD.
+Mech610 Like the radio.
Oh man. Seeing Pat getting ripped a new one in the comments is the best kind of entertainment.
Man Pat is such a Louis C.K. rip-off. Same presentation elements and everything.
+AussieDragoon I mean, he himself has said that on the podcast. It's stupid, but damn does he believe it!
+AussieDragoon
I was thinking a Josef Fritzl rip off. Someone save Liam from Pat's basement dungeon.
+Vertigo Gheist different sleeping beds tho
Pat's like a kid who gets bored if a book doesn't have a picture every two pages.
+Master Ofu Perhaps he was expecting a game...
i dunno if you know this but reading in a youtube video isn't exactly entertaining
"2/10. The bizarre symbols on the pages hurt my brain. There were short-haired girls, though!" - Woolie

It's totally impossible that this combination of fantasy tropes and traits that everyone agrees is cool could just be mixed together in absentia of any foreign influence!
+Kevin Li
In 1985, yes.
+Kevin Li To be fair, Lone Wolf was one of the first.
Liam backwards is Mail
Mailbag confirmed
actually Liam backwards is Ativ
Man, Mystery Box is such a Witcher ripoff

Gotta get that 100% completion trophy.
I get that Pat is saying that the in-game aesthetic and UI design are what has been patterned after the success of the Witcher, and not the story...but chill the hell out, dude. You're being the archetypal annoying fanboy.
+Jeedy Jay Also the writing, story motifs, character design, and terminology.(They literally call resting 'meditation')
+Joey C The Witcher ripped-off Lone Wolf? Who knew.
+Joey C But meditation IS resting.
+Joey C and the first published Lone Wolf book predates The Witcher's first by 8 years. And the Witcher is already just a conglomeration of other fairy tales and stories shoved into a universe. Get over it nerd.
Little Red Riding Hood confirmed Witcher rip-off
I can imagine Pat seeing a bunch of Buddhist monks meditating and just mumbling to himself, "Holy shit, those guys are just Witcher rip-offs!"
Pat nailed the definition of dexterity : FUCK IT I'M JUST GONNA WAAAAAAah
23:00 It's a visual novel, ya dorks. Also, Liam, what the hell? Why'd you start following Pat's bullshit? You were supposed to be the stubborn youngling.
+joujou264 I think they mean UI stuff. Plus the eyes and the meditating
phoenixsplash135 I can give them the UI (however, I'll still mention that the style is very common in wolf motifs, I'd wager that CD Projekt looked for inspiration from such motifs too), but everything else? Pat logic:
"It has a Wolf theme, IT'S A HUGE WITCHER RIPOFF"
"This thing that vaguely resembles The Witcher is clearly a huge Witcher ripoff."
-An Impotent Leprechaun, 2016
For how often Pat like to says he is, he seemed confused at how to turn a Page.
A magical warrior with an animal theme? In a medieval fantasy setting? Can't believe they ripped off the Witcher, the only historical example of that in all fiction. Magic, swords, and animals are an EXCLUSIVELY Polish idea wtf
even if the Lone Wolf franchise predates Witcher, this game's definitely inspired visually by the Witcher games
Or, you know, the fact that the Witcher's art direction is absurdly generic to begin with
Damn it! Someone already did the whole "Pat, you're a Louis C.K. rip off!" thing. Guess I got nothing.
You know what else is a Witcher rip-off? Dark Souls III. Speaking of Dark Souls III, when's Dark Souls III?
if pat's twitter's any indication it should be either tomorrow or this weekend!
+Ben Noland Wen Broly!
+DrkJP520 Just play Dark souls 1 while thinking about Demons souls.
Soon™
+DrkJP520 i hope never
This is actually good and you can get it free on Google Play.
The first "act" is free, the other 3 are $5 US each or $12 for all 3
Pat what if i told you lone survivors becoming badass warriors isn't exactly rare?
_Especially_ in fiction. For fuck's sake.
+Jeedy Jay Especially in games which they kind of should know. the only reason i even batted an eye when i saw Witcher 3 was because people were freaking out. it ls just like your standard Eurpean fantasy game otherwise.
Pat, by your logic:
Two Best Friends Play is a GameGrumps rip-off.
This game actually looks pretty interesting.
I used to read Lone Wolf as a kid in the 90's they were RPG Adventure books. The 1st one came out 2 years before the 1st Witcher book. I'll give you the design is clearly trying to cash in on the similarity to Witcher but plot--wise Lone Wolf was 1st.

It's not EXACTLY the same. This wolf emblem faces to the left.
Ah, popcultural osmosis at its best. "Lone Wolf saw the Witcher, then went back in time and released a book before the Witcher caught up!"
*Pat the Plebeian.*
Sure, but this game certainly takes quite the inspiration from the Witcher.

+Goblin Rat Well said.
With them finally playing a visual novel, we're one step closer to that Bible Black playthrough we've been waiting for.
+HelicopterOctopus "The High Priestess' dong will remember that."
This looks really cool, like a very polished text game/ choose your adventure book with actual gameplay. I'll give it a try.

2 Mystery Boxes in 1 week?
Does it mean, does it truly mean?
Reboot this weekend?!
I wish! I think they are just stalling for DS3.
+Youngster Joey 3 Mystery Boxes. Woolie was sick, so Matt and Pat were stalling for time.
+Alexandr Tezikov Sacrifice woolie for more time on the clock.
Joe Dever was my favorite author growing up.
you do realize the lone wolf novels came out a full 10+ yrs before he witcher books let alone the games.
I laughed so hard at, "Fear not, horse!!!"
Little did Pat know that the Witcher is itself a rip-off of Elric of Melnibone. Turns out the concept of a white haired warrior who's super good at fucking people up and has some relation to wolves is a common fantasy trope.
Cure Optimism define rip-off, buddy. Because except for their nickname and appearance, the two characters are completely different.
My true weakness...... reading.
Read.

Patt with Zack's head still gets me everytime...though seeing Zack with Patt's head popping out of the box with the chips is adorable too.
Lone Wolf was first published 1984, Pat. Read with your eyes
this is my favorite mystery box intro because Pat's angry catface is amazing
Holy crap. I remember the Lone Wolf series. It was a series of "Choose your own adventure" novel that was at my high school. I remember they had the adventure of being one of the few that had a somewhat sensible story and not just random stuff.
Holy shit, this game is actually kind of good!
I'm early and I definitely would make a joke about sodium but Na.
+infinitiBARS Oh fuck you!
I guess you didn't see "L" Yagami?
+infinitiBARS I hate that I gave you a thumbs up.
Im surprised they didnt know Lone Wolf already. We got the books in Spain even.
I didn't know this existed.
difference is the witcher was a short story. lone wolf was a game book, I remember I use to read it and it has a crap ton of pages
Actually, the first Lone Wolf thing was published in 84.
"This is the nintendogs of literature" -Liam
So, it's like Steve Jackson's "Sorcery", with quick time events.
The machinima intro is amazing, but this is my favorite by far.
The Lone Wolf series started in 1984, according to Wiki. So yeah, The Witcher starting in 1986 means that it's a Lone Wolf ripoff. Ha!
the Lone Wolf books predate the Geralt series by a few years, and were both published in their own locales without translation (at the time).
that said, this totally steals UI and asset influence from the games. even then, its really fun to play on the Switch.
Lone Wolf choose your own adventure books where the best when i was a kid!
I read the shit out of the "Survivor Stories" series. It was rad. Choose you own adventure books are kick ass!
Alright, so mobile games don't _always_ suck. Noted.
+ReinWeisserRitter They're like xbox indie games. 1/360 is serviceable.

This isn't my kind of game, but the quality is obvious, and I actually think the novel format between action scenes is a cool idea. This is a good use of its platform.
I used to love the Lone Wolf gamebooks! I'll have to pick this up sometime.
The battles literally look like Strength of the Sword Ultimate only with weird turn-based stuff. That enclosed little town arena is like literally the same as one of the arenas... like they stole the arena and then put their weird battle system into it.

Fuuuuck, I read and played these books as a kid! They were awesome! Guess this is going on my Steam wishlist ...
What mysterious jogo are we playing today?
+GSDAkatsuki the jogo of the direwolves
I read all of these books. I had no idea there were games being made from it. Blast from the past.
i really hope mystery box #25 would be like dark souls 3 or something
I realized 5 minutes in through it's a video game version of the Lone Wolf CYOA game books, I loved those
Actually read this back in the day, never knew there was a game for this!
I remember this game. The old installments used to be even more text heavy with less interactivity. It was one of the earliest series I'd seen that had a save transfer feature, but the engine was practically made for scumming and cheating.
That moment you just wanna send a picture of the books... it's based on
Wow missed chances for invisablessed! This looks like a fun game.
Lone wolf is The Witcher of video games.
I say they play Resident evil 5 next!
I will play with the entire Zaibatsu if that happens.
"Kai of Bajor" omg I love the random and admittedly obscure Star Trek refs XD
"Kai is a very eastern thing." - Pat, the cultural anthropologist.
Gan Of course, it also exists in the Middle East, India, Southern China, Mongolia and tons of other locations. But do you really think Pat implied anything but eastern Europe?
We're talking about Pat here.
When I watched this I could only imagine king Kai reading this story
Any book with a giant pig-ogre-chicken that the author accidentally made impossible to beat is a good game.
This is probably as close as we're going to get to hearing what Pat and Liam sound like at a D&D session.
Forget Mahvel, WHEN'S DARK SOULS!
Geralt's Off-Brand Adventures, hahahah. Nice.
From Wikipedia: "Lone Wolf is a series of 28 gamebooks, created by Joe Dever and initially illustrated by Gary Chalk. The series began publishing in July 1984 and sold more than 9 million copies worldwide."
Oooh, this'll be a good one. I played a bit of the mobile version once. Seemed pretty cool.
I never thought I would say this, but the interface looks like it would work well with the Steam controller.
Bloodborne is just a ripoff of The Order 1886.
The Order is just a ripoff of nightmare creatures
Bloodborne ripoff off *Chakan the Forever Man*
The Pickles Why did you write out a whole thing about the game then edit it to just that?
MohawkLogan
cuz... shut up... Greedo shot first.
Anyone else surprised and excited to see them play this?
isnt lone wolf one those choose your own adventure books?
+Reda B yup! Lots of them too. Since 1984.
Mystery Box episodes are the fucken best.
OH! I think I read one of the Lone Wolf books once. They're like Choose Your Own adventure types, pretty neat actually and not nearly as much of a Witcher rip-off as Pat makes it out to be. Neat that there's a game now, I definitely want to buy it.
You guys shill for audible yet here you are playing a book, you make me sick
He's a Pat now!
He's a cat now!
I'm guessing this is when one of the Zaibatzu was sick based on the severe lack of Twlight Princess the past few days.
WE NEED A FULL LP OF THIS
+spartacus778 I support this.
+spartacus778 You must be trollin'...
+spartacus778 i really disagree. this game may be fun to play but it doesn't look like it's good for an lp
Guys... The Witcher didn't fucking invent the act of meditation
a game with choices?
time for pat to be wrong about everything.
+Green Sanic But at least in a game he can somehow blame Kenny.
I instantly thought "oh so it's an open world rpg?, cool can't wait."...."oh no wait it's a book....okay"
While the Last Wolf books precede the Witcher books, it's pretty clear that the GAME took inspiration from the Witcher game. I mean, just look at the UI.
