Another great hunt with mates, as we search for an old trophy stag and get in close on some feral pigs.

Hi Tom. You have mentioned before that you check the pigs to see if they will make good eating or not. How do you know? Is it visual, smell on the meat or anything else? I cant find much info on this. I shot my first pig this week, then carried it 10km and 1000m elevation! I don't want to do that and regret the effort!!

Hi, great question. I firstly check if the animal is healthy ( fat). If the animal is fat it is a great sign it’s not struggling or stressed with anything. If an animal is fat it is unlikely to be fighting any infection and is also better equipped to fight off sickness in the first place.
Just remember all animals lean out in winter due to food availability, this is normal. But the difference between normal body weight fluctuations and being unhealthy is usually quite obvious.
If it doesn’t seem right I would stay on the safe side and leave it. Be mindful not to leave it near waterways / tracks etc.
If you’re hunting private land I would recommend approaching the landowner and quietly mentioning what you have seen. Just be respectful as this may not be something they want broadcasted ( social media). It also will give them a chance to ask there local vet to see if anything has come up in that area.
Personally when it comes to pigs especially, I don’t eat any that aren’t fat. I don’t like to waste meat but your health is far more important.
At the end of the day pigs are introduced in most areas and harvesting them benefits the natural environment, in most cases anyway. It is also likely to help the other animals in the area if you remove an animal that has gained some sort of sickness.
If you are very conscious about meat waste I would recommend not harvesting anything that looks like it’s skinny to begin with. Again your particular situation will dictate how best to handle this.
Wild animals can have a range of different diseases, however most are perfectly safe if the meat is cooked properly. Certain areas may have more risk than others.
I would recommend asking you local vet about this topic. They have very good data on this and will have specific details on the local area. The connection between the vet and farmers gives us a good indication of what is around as stock on farms are regularly tested for certain types of diseases ( for example TB). Vets are always notified of these results and are also informed of any wild animals being recovered for human consumption in the area. This also adds a great insight into the wild population, as all animals harvested for human consumption are inspected at the processing facility before being butchered. Valuable knowledge to have about your local hunting area.
There is also the consideration that some of these diseases my effect you dogs ( if you have any) , or be spread by dogs to other area’s. Your vet will also know this.
Another important source of information is the pesticide summaries located on the DOC website. This lists any areas that have had poisons laid in them.
It maybe that the animal is unhealthy due to a non-Lethal dose of toxin of some type. For your safety and your dog’s safety I strongly recommend keeping updated on this matter where you plan to hunt.
1080 especially is extremely unforgiving on dogs and it unfortunately only takes a dog to lick a bait for it to be lethal. You can get something from your vet to make your dog spew. In the case of 1080 this is your best bet as a non- lethal dose of 1080 should pass. In my experience though this situation is best completely avoided as the chance of a dog living is very very low. They are one of the most susceptible animals to this poison unfortunately. If cyanide baits are in the area don’t encourage vomiting. If the dog has swallowed the cyanide bait and it has made it past the respiratory system it’s best to be left to pass rather than vomiting it back up which will increase the risk of death.
We are much more resistant to 1080 and as long as we are sensible about what we are doing you can usually work around it.
That being said, it’s best to avoid areas for the recommended time frames. This information will be on the website.
I’m not sure where you are based but if you hunt public land in NZ long enough you will encounter areas that have had 1080 used. Be sure to check the website and look for signs when entering an area. It is law that signs are erected at all normal points of entry however sometimes these are illegally removed so the website is the most reliable source.
Back to the animal: I personally carry two knives on the hill. One for field dressing and one for meat butchering. This eliminates any cross contamination from the gut cavity and reduces the chance of your meat spoiling prematurely.
I’ll usually autopsy any animals I harvest. Start by gutting them and inspecting the vital organs- heart, liver, lungs etc. look for spots, sores or hard lumps. It’s also worth looking at the glands ( located at the back of the jaw and under the armpits). If these are inflamed there maybe an issue. If you cut them and it feels gritty to cut ( like a sandy feel) this is a good indicator it may have TB.
If there are lumps that look like rice in the meat this could be Sarcocystis . Dogs can catch and spread this by ingesting infected meat. I believe it’s ok if meat is cooked well.
Be sure to take care doing this- wash hands and knives well etc. if it looks particularly bad don’t touch it in the first place.
It’s probably best to take some photos. This way you can cross reference the healthy photos with some that’s abnormal. This will perhaps make it easier depending on how many animals you’ve dealt with.
This all sounds scary but most sickness in feral animals are relatively rare and very few are dangerous after the meat is
      cooked well.
A very good topic though. I may have to do a video on this.
      Sorry I know that’s a long response.
      Thanks for your support.
      Cheers,
      Tom.

@@controlledrecoil-nzhunting Thank you. I really appreciate the detailed response. I ended up taking it to a butcher that processes game animals and he thinks it looks great. I must say though I did not think it had loads of fat on it, so I will keep that in mind. Lots to learn. Keep up the awesome content...cheers

That’s good to hear. Yes not all animals will be really fat. But if it’s particularly boney, hips showing or the spine sticking out etc it’s a red flag. It may not even have a disease but it’s more likely to.
      Cheers mate, happy hunting.

    Nice shootin Robin Hood😜😜
Will the stags stay in the area once they harden up or will they start to head off in search of hinds???

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The large animal was dominant and stayed in this area last year. There are hinds around too not to far away, so if not disturbed I’d say they will stay as the feed is excellent in that area at the moment. However many of the stags will move off or be kicked out. That being said, often in other situations it’s the mature stag that seems to make the first move to find hinds and start accessing territory often in other areas, rather then the same place they grow there velvet. I think this is dictated a lot by food availability. If the hinds are happy and there’s good food available with not much pressure they’ll stay and that can sometimes set the area for the action come the roar. The difference is most places don’t hold great feed for this long especially when the colder weather starts and these now green south faces become sour. Dominant stags do have a habit of going to the same territory each year though in most cases. This will greatly vary with hunting pressure of course. Ha so many factors.
Cheers for the support mate 👍👍
