It makes me so angry when people dismiss heavy metal as noise and the musicians that produce it as talentless screamers. Our genre has some of the finest composers and musicians in the world and they make a success of their careers despite being practically ignored by mainstream radio and promotion.
These Raskasta Joulua concerts are all beautiful. Thank you Finland.

@@SueSueandthewolfman No absolutely not on here. Everyone here are either committed metal fans or respectful people. It's often a minority of ignorant pop fans who hear a band with guttural vocals and assume that's what all metal sounds like. (Without even appreciating the vocal talent required to sing harsh vocals night after night without blowing their voice)
Introducing someone to the genre and seeing them open up to the various types of metal is such a pleasure. Something you, and channels like you, are doing far more effectively than most mainstream radio stations. Keep up the good work.
Its the reason I watch so many reactions. Seeing other people enjoy my favourite music, especially when they have never heard of the bands before is awesome.

Heavy Christmas or Raskasta Joulua is a traditional Christmas show that tours around Finland every year. It started as a small club gig thing something 20 years ago and is today very big, in big arenas. Every heavy singer from Finland and also a few from abroad takes part. I was there and seen this many times. There is also one with Tarja and Marko when they sing together for the first time after she left Nightwish, a great moment for the audience to see that. Can't wait for Christmas and this tour again, this was beautiful, but take a look at Floor singing O Holy Night in pure Finnish.... it's quite heavy. Don't watch much TV today, but one of my favorite tv series is Heartbeat.

Marko is OK. I saw him perform now on Friday 1.7. at the metal festival "Tuska". Northern Kings performed then.
Marko was even the performer of their first song and got to do it as a solo song! At the end, Jarkko Ahola shouted into the microphone "Marko is back"!
Marko seemed really fit, he even ran on stage sometimes!!! :D And his voice... It was truly amazing!
I don't know if he's doing any more shows now than a few Northern Kings shows. This was the second Northern Kings gig this year.

The movie was penned by Tuomas Holopainen and a close friend. It is about a composer/lyricist close to death and fighting to hold on to his memories. The band has parts in the movie, before Floor, when Anette was the lead singer. If Suesue watches it with you, you will both need tissues. I know I always do, and I have seen it at least 20 times. Hi Wolfman, you almost got it right at 9:10 .. This piece being "Ave Maria", which is Latin for hail Mary, the language Floor sang in was evidently Latin. There's another version of them singing AM, with Floor in a white dress (I believe) where the mutual appreciation just oozes out of the both of them. Especially Marko, leaning into Floor at the end really is heartwarming. Let's see if I can find that one.. ( .. ). Yes, here goes: Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) 2019 - Floor Jansen & Marko Hietala - Ave Maria th-cam.com/video/q1UJHpyFQn0/w-d-xo.html Cheers from Amsterdam!

This is my favorite composition by Schubert. I do prefer it over Bach's Ave Maria, probably because my dad and I played it at church and weddings, my dad on violin and me doing the alto harmony on the viola. It is an emotional piece of music for me.. Floor and Marko do this beautifully. 💗💓💗

    • @BrendonChase_2015
      @BrendonChase_2015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Oh yes, definitely this composition. The "white dress" version by Floor & Marko is my personal favourite for the sheer chemistry on display between the two. My grandmother used to sing all kinds of songs (in Dutch, but also in Latin) relating to Mary. The farm of my grandparents was dubbed "Sterre der Zee" (star of the sea), which is a translation of the Latin "Stella Maris" Mary's 'nickname'. So there's the connection with Tuomas' ocean soul.. ;) Cheers from Amsterdam!

This was from a big Christmas concert held annually in Finland. Floor recorded a solo version during the pandemic that you can find on her TH-cam channel as well. @@js0988 Interesting. I understand that that Yule or Joule, has it’s ancient Nordic pagan origins, from the days of Odin, but that the word has become synonymous with with Christmastide or Christmas time today. Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) was started by Erkka Korhonen when he “realised that two important elements of Finnish culture - celebrating Christmas and thrashing out loud music - could be creatively combined.” Many of the songs they have recorded and perform at the shows, such as this one, are decidedly Christian. Many, if not most of western culture’s Christmas traditions are based from the ancient yuletide traditions.

I am a huge Nightwish fan but here is another humble suggestion for your music bucket list: The Finnish band Poets of the Fall singing Angel at the Alexander Theater Session in Helsinki. In my opinion one of the best male singers today. Only him and a piano. I think you would like it. Kind regards from a hot Turku/Åbo.

I think it’s time to react to After Forever, Floor’s first band. She joined the band when she was just 16yo. Back then, the band was called Apocalyse. One of the first members was Mark Jansen from Epica.
I am following her career since then. Nightwish and After Forever were my favourite bands and still they are.
I’ve added some links to live performances in TV shows in the Netherlands. They are soft songs. The genre of After Forever was simphonic metal mixed with gothic, progressive, death growls and operatic voices, a bit of everything. Heavier than Nightwish. They were awesome.
After seeing this, you can tell that Floor was born to be a rock star. She was 21-22 yo in 2002-2003. I’m the same age as Floor (1981) and I love to recall that time through After Forever and Nightwish.

Glad to hear you are going to react to AF soon. Also, I recommend to watch a documentary about Floor’s life and career. It’s very interesting. She was bullied at school because she was different, but music changed her life. She suffered a “Burnout” when she was in Revamp. But Nightwish called her and that changed her life again. Floor saved Nightwish and Nightwish saved Floor. Now she is doing a lot of things but living in the woods, with a nice husband and daughter (Hannes and Freya), surrounded by animals, her life is balanced and she is happy. Good for us, too. The documentary was made for a german TV show (like Beste Zangers), called Sing meinen Song, where everyone was amazed by her great talent. It’s in german but it has english subtitles. It’s 45 minutes long and you can react to it or just watch it in your free time. It’s a nice and inspiring story. Here is the link th-cam.com/video/5t1mz49-Suo/w-d-xo.html

Side note: Disney's Fantasia was originally supposed to end with the powerful interpretation of Moussorsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", but Disney found that so frightening that he felt uncomfortable about ending the film with it, so Ave Maria was added (with the blandest animation of the entire film).

There are certain songs that you don’t have to be religious or even understand the lyrics to like even though the message is clearly about faith. Of the old songs in this category I can think up “Ave Maria”,”Amazing grace” and “O holly night “. The last one I prefer the Swedish version sung by Jussi Bjorling. Even though I usually don’t listen to opera I acknowledge that he was one of the greatest tenors that has ever lived.🤠

This version comes from an hour long special that YLE (Finnish TV) released from the full Hartwell Arena show in December of 2017 (which cuts out the version of White Christmas that Floor did with Joe Lynn Turner where she TOWERS over him haha). It was up for a long time on their website; I watched it about 5 or 6 times all the way through. Sooooo much fun. Another great song from that show is Julen Ar Har, that Elize Ryd did with Tony Kakko in Swedish. There are versions of that song floating around from various different shows, but I don't know that the "official" one is still up on YT, though I did see a fan shot version. Anywhoo...these Raskasta Joulua shows are a great tradition, it must be awesome for the folks who get to see them. INSANE amounts of talent in these shows, and the song arrangements are perfect \m/

I've watched dozens and dozens of reactions to this performance, and yours is one of my favorites. I love sharing time with other people who appreciate the supreme talents of these two artists as much as I do! /// Regarding your question on TV shows, do they have to be current ones? Because then I'm out. I never watch any TV anymore. But if you want to hear about classic ones, then my contributions are the original, classic Star Trek (I have Mr. Spock and Mr. Scot to thank for inspiring my then-future/now-completed career direction) and Alf because his off-color humor was so far ahead of its time and remains timelessly hilarious.

Very different from the Schubert original but a great performance of it.
Schubert didn't write this as a piece of sacred music. He wrote it as part of one of his many song cycles, in this case 7 songs taken from Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake".
Schubert was mainly a lied (song) writer despite being known for his symphonies and other works.
I'm not sure of the number but I think Deutsch catalogued over 700 songs, many written in song cycles like this, Winterreise or Die Schone Mullerin.
My point is that although the text is taken from Hail Mary, Schubert did not write it for the church.
What Like about this is the display of connection between Floor and Marco.
I find his voice kind of envelops you with warmth - and then Floor does the same but in Latin and English.
I knew you would like it.

I think Marco's style of singing is sot of bluesy, adding and taking away weight where it seems appropriate. Floor to my ears is extremely good throughout her part, I just wish their duet could have lasted a bit more.
Two of my favorite TV shows have been by the BBC, one aired in Finland (like that's going to stop me😊). The children's show Rex the Runt (1998-2001) for both children and adults, the stop-motion claymation grabbed me from the first ten minute part. And then there's the middle to late (about 2012 onwards) Live at the Apollo of Britain's greatest standup comedians. I'm showing my age, aren't I😗?

Yeah, not too many people in the world with this kind of talent. In a similar vein, trying reacting to extraordinary powerhouse vocalist, musician, and songstress BETH HART. Beth’s discography is extremely deep and diverse (Rock, Blues-Rock, Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul). Her music is not religious in nature (but religious belief is important to her to help her navigate her bipolar challenges) but her voice and passion will take you to church! @@SueSueandthewolfman Los Angeles-but there’s a long, intense story here. Although many musicians are known for having been through a lot, Beth been through the meat grinder more than most (see separate reply comment for some detail here). She is not well known commercially but is household name in the Blues world and in the music industry in general. So phenomenal is her voice, passion, and stage presence, that Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Slash, and Buddy Guy have sought her out to collaborate with. She was first signed by Atlantic Records in 1995 and had her first big single with her 2nd album in 1999 at age 27. She nearly died soon after due to drug and alcohol addition, anorexia, and mental illness.
By 2000, she was quickly dropped by Atlantic and this effectively ended her music career in the US. After a series of rehabs and psyche wards, getting married, and not leaving the house for over a year, she resurrected her life and career in the Netherlands with a new album (“Leave the Light On”) in 2003. She built a huge European following over the next decade (for example, in 2018, as a blues singer, she sold out London’s 5,200 seat Royal Albert Hall and then Amsterdam’s 17,000 seat Ziggo Dome the following week). This is unheard of for a non-commercial artist.
What put her back on the map in the USA (and allowed her to tour here once again) were the following events: (1) a recording collaboration of blues and soul classics with blues guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa in 2011 (“Don’t Explain”); (2) an appearance with Jeff Beck at the Kennedy Center Honors for a Buddy Guy tribute in 2012; and (3), a second studio blues/soul cover album (“Seesaw”), this time Grammy-nominated, with Joe in 2013. Accompanied by new studio albums of original material in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019, and the recent Zeppelin Tribute album in 2022, Beth and her touring band have been back constantly performing in the States since about 2014.
Beth Hart is insanely talented with respect to song-writing, stage presence, vocal skill, and musicianship (plays piano, guitar, bass in concert), and simply one of the world’s most brilliant and passionate performers. She is absolutely mesmerizing and electrifying in concert (I saw her in Feb and in May this year).
