You will not be disappointed of the High Hopes. There is countless times i've seen a comment by pink floyd fans commenting that nigthwish high hopes is their favorite version of that song.
According to a biography, Tuomas had an idyllic childhood. His big love, that continued into adulthood, was Disney. His mother was a piano teacher. He had piano lessons at the age of seven, and majored in clarinet, and minored in piano. His music teacher says that when Tuomas returned from a visit to the States, where he had been introduced to Metallica, he showed him an album by Dream Theater. Prior to this introduction he'd been mainly into jazz rock. After Metallica he got into Megadeth, Pantera, Ozzy Osbourne and became a metalhead. Emppu, Tarja - the original singer - and Jukka were all taught by the same music teacher. As for Marko, he once had botched surgery for polyps and lost his falsetto, having to relearn how to sing. He didn't do too bad, did he?
I think the music industry would have to change before that happens. Plus, I believe he's said he'd rather plays smaller venues than big shows. But it's unlikely these things will change anytime soon. I do feel you, I bought a ticket specifically to hear Marko and Floor together.

Some interesting facts about Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd and Nightwish. Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) is a fan of Nightwish. He said in an interview: -UG: Are there newer bands out there right now that you're excited about? And do you think there are any that could become as big as Iron Maiden? -Harris: "Wow, that's a tough one because I think there are some good bands out there. I think times have changed so much and who knows whether they have the chance to be a global band like Maiden is. It takes a long time for a band to become like Maiden has. Certainly, some bands have got the talent. I think Nightwish are a great band and they're getting bigger all the time. They probably have the biggest chance of (reaching worldwide success on a level that Maiden has). He said in another interview: When I heard Dark Passion Play, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Now, this is a proper fucking album.’ It’s got everything bar the kitchen sink in there. It was controversial because of the new singer [Anette Olzon], but she was brilliant. No disrespect to [original Nightwish singer] Tarja, but Anette’s voice suited them a lot better. There’s heavy stuff, classical, even a bit of Disney - all kinds of shit in there. I think it’s one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard in my life. “Then I got the next one, [2011’s] Imaginaerum. Storytime is a fantastic, instant song. The rest of the album took me a while to get into. Dark Passion Play was so good, I thought there was no way they could ever come up with an album that’s anywhere near that, but the more I got into Imaginaerum, the more I loved it.” Nightwish played right after Iron Maiden in Rock in Viena and Download Festival in 2016. Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain enjoyed the Nightwish shows from the side of the stage. In the Nightwish book “We were here” the band said how nice they were with them and the other bands that supported their concerts. The Pink Floyd tribute (not a cover) is amazing. And David Gilmore approved and said he loved it.
Marko, beautiful personality und human (the whole group is). Appreciate you revisiting The Islander again with your commentary. Looking forward zu all your reactions. My song from same concert will be Sleeping Sun for personal reasons can not wait. I play it every Saturday for my wife even though she passed away in 2011. Bless.
You will love High Hopes…it is not a carbon copy of the original, but it is respectful of the original. Some other Marco stuff you might like…there is a great video, easily found on YT, of Marco and Floor singing Ave Maria…beautiful. Something you may not be aware of about Marco…a couple of years ago, he not only competed in, but WON the Finnish version of the TV show The Masked Singer. Just search YT for Marco Masked Singer…you’ll find those performances. He has also been the front man for his own band called Tarot since the mid-1980s…you can find their stuff on YT, as well. He was a legend in Finland even before he joined Nightwish. Oh, and he released a solo album a couple of years ago, too.
In case no one has mentioned ...... Marko was in the Finnish version of The Masked Singer - and he won !! You will love High Hopes :-) He also makes lots of guess appearances with other bands such as Delain with Charlotte Wessels and (of course!) with Aryeon. Fascinating hearing the Wolfman's influences - I know folk in their sixties who listen fanatically to one band (usually from the Sixties or Seventies) and never moved on. Like you I have moved around lots of styles - although now 67, I an stuck on Symphonic, Progressive Metal. It's such a varied genre, there is something there for everyone.
Check out Marco's side project, a beautiful ode to his father. th-cam.com/video/dwvqpRRCDdE/w-d-xo.html I am sure you will like this one. It is his own composition. So ENJOY!!!
Watch Ava Maria with Floor and Marco. She's dressed in black. Remember, the last album Marco was in is human nature in 2020. He's been out of the band for 2 years! Tuomas's mother was a piano teacher.
Marco does have a incredible voice. I different sound. Can not understand that somebody does not like it. Again a great reaction from you. Love to watch you both. Stay safe. Greetings from the Netherlands
Lovely reaction. Floor was laughing at the end because Marko pulled a fast one on her at the end and sang more powerfully then normal and she had to adjust her harmonies on the fly. The music video for this song is quite good as well and has some steampunk aesthetics to it. It was the basis for the virtual world they created for their virtual concert last May in a tavern called The Islander Arms.
I watched this reaction again und was thinking same thing. I like this (slightly better) vocally as es focuses on Marko more than video but the video brings out the feels more und portrays the story in such a fantastisch way. That was the first video I ever put in my playlist so long ago.
What a feeling it must be to be confident and skilled enough to take a guitar and walk out into a crowd , talk to them get them to sing your song and affect them so deeply. He is the cool uncle we all wish we had.
You might check out "High Hopes" by Nightwish (tribute to Pink Floyd) from the "End of en Era" concert. Also "Phantom of the Opera" from the very same concert is a good one featuring Marko and their original singer Tarja. 😉
This song comes from the time after Tarja, when Marko was more and more emerging for the lead singing. In 2007 Nightwish hired Anette Olzon, she did partly lead and partly backing next to Marko. Thus, Floor sings backing in these songs. Another example is 'While your lips are still red,.
Yes High Hopes is excellent. Also try them playing Sahara at Tampa 2016. Or Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean or Slaying the Dreamer both in Buenos Aires 2018.
oh yes , high hopes . i born in 67 and always heard Pink Floyd from the cradle, my mother is 87 and has always been the biggest fan of Pink Floyd I know, and when I showed her this version she loved and sang the entire song with Marko and this it is the greatest tribute she can do. greetings from Portugal 🤘🤘

Another great reaction. And yes, Marko has an amazing singing voice. You are going to love Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd / High Hopes. Another great Marko performance would be Nightwish's version of Phantom Of The Opera which is an older performance that also happens to include the band's original lead vocalist Tarja! Loved the video its lovely to see the smiles and expressions on both your faces while listening to a great song. Have you listened to Ayreon yet? Arjen Anthony Lucassen's long running super project and also another one f his called Star One. I think you will love it.
Oh, yes, i second that. But this is another huge huge rabbit hole to explore. And it is good to know that Arjen is telling a story through the songs of Ayreon albums. Like So many others i think "The Day that the World breaks down" is a good introduction to the Ayreon Universe.
In addition to the influences others have mentioned, Tuomas is also a big fan of composer Hans Zimmer. Looking forward to the High Hopes reaction. Marko kills it.🤘🤘 You mentioned wanting to check out Tarja (pronounced Tar-ya). Some good ones to start with are; their cover of Phantom of the Opera, Wishmaster, and The Siren. All form the 2005 End of an Era show. The same show High Hopes is taken from, but Tarja is offstage for a wardrobe change during that song. And ,to repeat my comment from the video with no sound that you took down, the second spoken part roughly translates to : "If I play the chorus, you're gonna sing along, right?" - "Yeah!" - "Are you sure?" - "Yeah!" - "Ok, let's do it"

Check out Nightwish Setting Sun same concert in Tempere. I think you’ll love the vibe. On the Greatest Show On Earth reaction please do the extended version as you really missed the most emotional interaction with the band, fans and crew. I know you had the audio problem and did a second “reaction” but SueSue did say she really didn’t mind hearing the song a second time, well like all Nightwish songs in my humble opinion they song even better and become my favorite the instant I hear them again! As always God Bless and give the pups a pat for me! Rock On Stay Safe!🙏👍🐶🦴🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Lots of great recommendations in the comments already. If you want to do more from Tampere I'd like to add one of my personal favorites "Stargazers", a song that had been "off of the Nightwish setlist for over 10 years". I simply love it...
Marko Hietala learned the guitar before the took up the bass, and he's pleasingly proficient at it. To me his singing is stylized towards the blues, but he can add and take away vocal colors as it suits him. Nightwish just doing a folk song version of The Islander, that's a brave move which pays off.
Marco has stated on many an occasion that he has stylized his singing after another great singer: the late great Ronnie James Dio. You can definitely hear that in the timber, tone, and vibrato in his voice.
We love Marco. Yes High Hopes please. And do try Marco's solo album, Pyre of the Black Heart starting with The Voice of My Father - you'll love it I think. This, of course, is after he had his throat operation that changed his voice somewhat. That operation was around 1997 IIRC. I also recommend, if you are delving into Marco, that you read his autobiography, "Stainless?" (Spoiler alert - he isn't). Great read.
Thank you very much❤. If you want To see/hear Marko In a total different eviroment/band as a singer only, pls watch "Delain" feat. Marko-the Garhering, In Masters of Rock❤
Marko is so good, so it does sadden me that he left. Hopefully one day he does come back, as long as it's on his terms on not due to pressure. Also, I've seen you guys do a lot of Nightwish and Sabaton, (The Dooo videos are great as well), so if you two are open to a more modern sound of metal, I think Satellites by Periphery would be something you guys could delve into, but regardless, cheers 🤘🏻
To me this is a song about a father losing his memory slowly, fading away from this world. Slowly and gently he walks into the abyss and unto his island where he can only be a guiding light for others. This is totally my own interpretation of this song but it rings true to me at least. My father has become old and as of late and has started beginning to believe in conspiracy stories and no matter what I do, He drifts away slowly but surely, and no matter what there's nothing I can do.
Again, if you have Floor Jansen singing backup for you, you must be a badass! Tuomas has mentioned many influences, including Metallica, Guns n Roses, Vangelis, Mike OldField, Pantera, Tiamat, Disney movies, Howard Blake, My Dying Bride, Folk music, Hans Zimmer, and many others. Wolfman, there was a lot of great music in the 80s, too, including that Ghost in the Machine album on your wall. One of my favorite bands from the 80s was Triumph.
Thé Metal symphonic Keltic band Next one, Floor solo, Sleeping Sun, Same concert. A calm beautiful song Or Marco heavy solo? Watch their cover of Megadeth, Symphony of destruction, Montreal 2004 concert I guess. Marco is fantastic
Buster seems to be quite fond of you SueSue! You will love High Hopes my friends. Great taste in early music Wolfman. If you want to see the soft side of Marko, check out Marko singing a lullaby (Black Sabbath's - Planet Caravan) to Jukka's young daughter. See link. th-cam.com/video/-XBZutbxSf4/w-d-xo.html - Marko sings a lullaby
SueSue, Tuomas was studying to become a marine biologist, why you see so much about the ocean and he will lyrically call himself an Ocean Soul, he was on an exchange student visit in Kansas when he told his hosts he didn't like metal music, so they took him to a Metallica and G 'n R concert, he said Metallica was the musical trigger for him. I think you might have come across or will indeed, find a big nod to Metallica.
@@susanhoffman4835 Tuomas have solo project, it's more movie soundtrack style. "Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge is the first solo album by Finnish songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, best known for his work in the symphonic metal band Nightwish. It was based on cartoonist Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, a graphic novel which featured the Carl Barks Disney comics character of the same name." I believe in Yeti/Missing Link... But the main question is... Do you guys believe in me?
🇫🇮👍 Too bad that Marko decided to leave the band for personal reasons in 2021. However, they managed to replace him with a great new bassist, but unfortunately he doesn't sing, which is why their setlist is now somewhat different with Floor taking care of most of the vocals & Troy backing her up in some songs from their latest album. P.S. In his old & now archived personal profile on the band's website, Tuomas told that he's inspired by film music & also listens to such music for leisure. He likes, for example, the musical scores to The Village, Van Helsing, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Crimson Tide, and practically everything written by Hans Zimmer. In the band's official biography (1996 - 2006) "Once Upon A Nightwish", bands stated as an influence on Nightwish include Children of Bodom, Theatre of Tragedy, The Gathering, My Dying Bride, Tiamat and The 3rd and the Mortal.
Nightwish's new bassist Jukka does sing (ie. with Wintersun, although more so as accompanying and backing vocals). At this point in time, Tuomas is choosing not to use his vocals. Who knows, in time that may change.
You will not be disappointed of the High Hopes. There is countless times i've seen a comment by pink floyd fans commenting that nigthwish high hopes is their favorite version of that song.

And did you know that he also won (recently) the Finnish Masked Singer? Those performances are out there too...from Prince to Elton John, I think he even sang Gangster's Paradise... really great!
Enjoyed your stories, thank you for letting us know you better!
I watched a video of Marko singing a lullaby to a little baby - heart melting :) And I watched the Elton John performance on Masked Singer as well - beautiful
@@susanhoffman4835 oh yeah, that was precious! The baby was original drummer, Jukka's, and he was playing a Black Sabbath song!
Hi guys, thanks for another wonderful reaction, its always such a pleasure to be part of your Nightwish journey 🤘
Hey Jim!
@@susanhoffman4835 👋👍🤘
If you like Marko's singing you should check also his old band Tarot's songs "Tides" and also e g. Tarot's Heavy Metal on Ice consert songs "Guardian Angel" and "Things that crawl at night" 🙂: th-cam.com/video/8EsHGBW_uU8/w-d-xo.html
Rock On Stay Safe!🙏👍🐶🦴🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
you too Frank!
Sue sue and wolfman you should try to do Pink Floyd version and then Nightwish version back to back that would be cool cheers NWA Canada reporting
For another tear jerker, listen to their "decades in the sun. " bring your kleenex! Good call on Tampere version for sleeping sun.
We love Marco. Yes High Hopes please.
And do try Marco's solo album, Pyre of the Black Heart starting with The Voice of My Father - you'll love it I think.
This, of course, is after he had his throat operation that changed his voice somewhat. That operation was around 1997 IIRC.
I also recommend, if you are delving into Marco, that you read his autobiography, "Stainless?"
(Spoiler alert - he isn't).
Check out the original music video of this. The Wolfman looks like the lighthouse keeper on the video.
😂😂😂
😊🇫🇮❤️🎶🎹🎸🥁✨🤘🏝️
To me this is a song about a father losing his memory slowly, fading away from this world. Slowly and gently he walks into the abyss and unto his island where he can only be a guiding light for others. This is totally my own interpretation of this song but it rings true to me at least.
My father has become old and as of late and has started beginning to believe in conspiracy stories and no matter what I do, He drifts away slowly but surely, and no matter what there's nothing I can do.
I’m so sorry to hear this - Wolfman’s mother suffered from dementia and it was very hard. Prayers for you 💕💕💕
Again, if you have Floor Jansen singing backup for you, you must be a badass!
I tell him the same thing Kent!
This is Marco's son, he wrote it
Thé Metal symphonic Keltic band
Next one, Floor solo, Sleeping Sun,
Same concert. A calm beautiful song
Or Marco heavy solo?
Watch their cover of Megadeth,
Symphony of destruction,
Montreal 2004 concert I guess.
I love that video and the baby - he's so gentle and kind :)
@@susanhoffman4835 It's not a great recording obviously, but it really shows the soft side of Marko. The big bad Viking has a HEART. 💖💖
Love to know all this!
marco a good voice (je suis francais)
Tuomas has said that his main influences are Metallica and Disney movie scores.
How cool! Thx!
It was based on cartoonist Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, a graphic novel which featured the Carl Barks Disney comics character of the same name."
Tuomas Holopainen - a Lifetime of Adventure
Tuomas Holopainen - the last sled
Both are excellent.
I believe in Yeti/Missing Link... But the main question is... Do you guys believe in me?
Tuomas like Jean Sibelius
Yes you nailed it!! The High Hopes recreation was absolutely a tribute and not a cover. :) Pink Floyd th-cam.com/video/aSZ0OYEcs-0/w-d-xo.html =D
@@johnd8546 I know that & I should have worded my comment somewhat differently saying that he doesn't sing with Nightwish at the moment.
If you like Marco singing, have ya'll watched kiss while your lips are still red at the wacken 2013 show?
Yes Our reaction is on our homepage playlist!
have you seen Nightwish where Tarja Turunen is as vocals? she is Opera singer and original singer in Nightwish =)
