    This has no dedicated GPS which is a no go for me because you have to depend on mobile service for this thing to work. If you lose mobile service you are screwed. Also I like to make custom routes with via points to force the route to go the way you want to go. You still need a gps in my opinion.

    • @NothingToProve

      It used to be that way but changed around when the first iPhone (smart phone) came out in 2007. Believe me I've tested this app (and others) on my Samsung S9, when I did my Alps trip last summer on my BMW F900XR, almost at every summit I didn't have a network signal but I did have GPS navigation with this app and took pictures and attached the pictures to the route and that is how I made my video series of my Alps trip that I uploaded this last winter for my channel.
      Also, you can make custom routes and import into phone app via .GPX. and change the route on the fly, just like a Garmin Zumo, I have one of those too.
      Please read the description and see the links I put in there, this will answer all your questions.
      Ride safe,
      Scott

      You download the maps to your iPhone before hand, can also import routes as well. The TFT on the bike is just a monitor with the iPhone driving the map via WiFi, no cell needed. Absent a wifi connection between the TFT and iPhone you’ll still get directions, however the directions are now via Bluetooth and a very basic arrow system is presented instead of a map.
      My phone seems to lose the wifi connection to the bike on every ride and the system defaults to very basic arrows, no maps.
      I agree, should have a basic underlying navigation system like the Microsoft system my F250 has which works flawless.
      And for crying out loud... NO WAZE! No WAZE on a motorcycle of all things.

If I lived somewhere I could ride more than store it I think this is a front runner. Thanks for showing us your take away on this beautiful machine. Cheers!

    As far as I am concerned you can do that more often.
    A raw video without the effort of cutting or editing.
    Just the pure fun and it seems you had tons of it.
    The combination of this huge display and the BMW app on the cellphone could be just my kind of navigation system.
    Because I always had the worst of luck with actual Navigation-devices like Garmin or TomTom.
    Thanks for the video Scott.

    Would you believe there are many more Plus size phone owners out there? You can’t get get an iPhone 8 Plus in that charger. Also would love to see BMW install backlit handlebar switches for night riding and blind spot mirrors. Shouldn’t be all that difficult for a premium company like BMW. They did finally upgrade the horn on this wonderful bike, which for years was seriously lacking as it is on the wonderful GS/GSA. Do like the Adaptive Cruise and the integrated large display. Nice job NTP! Ride safe and ride often.

  • @tedv82

    The reason so many complain about the navigation on this bike is because it is overly complicated and unreliable. I spent a week on this bike, considering it as a replacement for my 2015 RT and decided to keep my current bike, mainly because of the new TFT screen, convoluted menu navigation, and the dependency of the navigation system on my phone. If your phone doesn't support wireless charging or is in a case, it probably won't fit in the compartment designed for it. My 2015 has a Garmin-based Motorrad GPS that works independent of my phone or a cell signal. In my view this bike was designed by engineers who don't ride, or who spend a lot more time on their phone than their bike. Buy a 2014-2020 model used, and save yourself a lot of money and grief.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To discredit a whole bike because of one new tech on it, is a mistake without looking at the entire package. Put your Garmin on this bike too, just like on your old bike and you'll love this bike too. No bike is perfect and BMW is a pioneer in this area, is it perfect yet, NO, a long way from it, but it will get better and better over time. There are only 4 other bikes that have this tech, so being the first to market has it's pitfalls but one must look at all the other improvements on this bike too and they are many. My 6 month owner review of this bike will be up on my channel tonight. And I don't even mention map mode on the TFT because the rest of the bike is so good that I didn't have time.
      Take care & thank you I value owner opinion the most,

      Scott, thanks for your great videos! They were a large part of my decision to buy an R1250RT. I pick it up on Tuesday. I love the blue but they are really hard to find so I’m getting a white one. That can be a benefit here in the US because so many police departments use white bikes. My last accident I was hit from behind on an orange bike😮. He “couldn’t see” me. Everyone sees a cop bike.

    • @tedv82
      @tedv82 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NothingToProve I bought a 2022 R1250RT, used with just 900 miles on it in February, have put about 5000 miles on it, and I am very happy with the bike...except for the nav system. On hot days the phone compartment gets too hot, even with ventilation, twice my phone shut down due to heat. You can't plug an address into the nav display, you have to pull out your phone. The app essentially takes over your phone in map mode, you can't use it for anything else. There are nice features in the app, like recording your rides, but I would happily give up the bells and whistles for a simple and reliable nav system. Based on comments on line I am not alone, and I hope BMW is getting the message, that improvements will be made to serve exiting owners, and that soon they overhaul this design.

      @@BlueRidgeRider Mine is white, too, and it is amazing how many people mistake me for a motorcycle cop. It's great when they get out of your way, problematic when they slow down in the fast lane and pace the person next to them.

    I bought this R1250RT 2021 in Amsterdam and sold it after one month. I hated the navigation by iPhone. Several times i had to wait for several minutes for connection and other times the connection got lost during the ride. Its an awfull system. Bought a new goldwing. Navigation is integrated in the bike and works flawless. Also with imported gpx routes. And also Apple Carplay with maze app etc. I love the Honda and never want a bike anymore with iphone connection as a must. Next to that i had qualtity issues with the RT. A strong zooming sound from the dash and strange noise while riding 60 to 80.

    I suggest that you try the navigation system with an iPhone - then you will find that if you stop the bike (e.g. for petrol) and start again, not only does the connection take a long time to re-establish but the voice directions will have disappeared. Yes, navigation is very nice, if, if you do nit have an Apple iPhone connected to the BMW Connected App. This connection get problems after 30-100km, You habe to stop bike, grap phone out of the box, start map again. BMW tells you and me that its an Apple problem in bluetooth and they work with Apple to resolbe it somewhere in the future. This is the bad side if connecticity, you have problems from foreign components you can not controll. If they do not solve this in the next 3 weeks in need an Android pnone only for navigation

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or just get a Gold Wing/Africa Twin! LOL! Cause Honda is the other way around, they only do Apple and not Android. But at least I give credit to BMW for trying to do both operating systems at the same time. BMW is the leader in this area of Bluetooth connectivity and when you are the leader, there will be development problems. Now that I've replaced my Samsung S9 with the Samsung S20FE, I've had no disconnection problems with my BMW900XR at all, now it's one disconnection every 2 to 3 days, instead of 2 to 3 times a day, so it seems that it really depends on the smart phone and what level of android the phone is able to handle too.

    Hello dear friend,
    I’ve seen a lot of videos made by you and I love the work and the analysis you do of the bikes you test.
    In this case, you tested the sporty version which means that in the standard version the wind protection is even superior to the one here reviewed. It is something precious about this bike. The clutch feels also better compared to other models that use the same engine , feels smoother and I don’t really know it is, but it happens!
    I think this bike is that kind of vehicle that allows you to go everywhere and almost by every path on road. I saw your video about the BMW 1250RS and at that time didn’t understood your critique about it. But after a while I bought the Yamaha XSR Abarth version and I saw where you came from!
    Although, this motorcycle is a must have for traveling on two wheels and you confirmed it with this video.
    Thanks for your good work, you give an important contribution to make people that love motorcycles , to be better informed and to do the right decisions.

    Top notch review Scott. I scrolled through and didn't see this question asked as many are interested in the nav setup (I already use Connected :) and this screen looks awesome.
    To my question: how is wind management on this bike compared to the previous front end design? I love the RT looks but I live in the SE United States which you may know means hot and humid summers. I've put some miles on the previous gen (2014? to 2020) and they just block too much wind for my preference. I always felt the RT could benefit from the little wings they have on the K bikes. You mentioned the air inlets, is that just for the phone compartment or does that route air to the rider?

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Cranky! No no, the new "patented" air intakes on the front basically manage the air in the cockpit to prevent the air from coming around and pressing on your back, to create a neutral environment in the cockpit so to speak or to neutralize the wind vortices created by the big windshield. But some of that air is sucked in by the electric fan for the phone compartment to keep it cool while the phone is charging for example. And yes, it is water proof, so they must be pulling the air in from higher up so it's not pulling in wet/rain air...this is what I'm assuming...since BMW say it's water proof and protected from the elements. Now that I'm thinking about it, I now want to test this in the wet...sigh...have to wait for a rainy day! 🤣🤣

    Top review ! Well done. Question: I'm riding with my navigation-phone in the right glove box and then I see a nice scenery of which I want to take a picture with the same phone. Can you describe that process? Something like: "Stop the bike, open the box, take the phone, disconnect the app, take the picture, open the app again, reconnect with the TFT, put the phone back in the box." How easy would that be or do I need a second phone?

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LOL! just open the camera app and take a picture or within the BMW app and take a picture and attach it to the map, location tag basically. During my Alps trip last summer I had 4 or 5 apps open at the same time with out any problems. I actually had 3 Navigation apps open, this, Sygic and Calimoto. So I could alternate between them, just to see which I like best. Phone is the Samsung S9, work great.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just FYI, I actually had the app open while filming this video (when standing behind the bike) with the same phone that I was using in the navigation portion of the video, I just never exited out of it when I started filming with it.
      One can try to over think this if one wants to. Just pull the phone out of the glove box or coat pocket and take a picture, then put it back, the navigation app is still open all the time in the background and just swipe to pull it in front, if you want to see it.
      edit: I can't speak for as to how IPhones work, I've never used one.

    Great review, thanks. I picked up my new RT a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying every minute of riding it. This one is my third RT in succession and I especially love the new, grunty, engine. It really does pull like a freight train as you said.
    Anyway, even though the map navigation feature works OK and I do get the visual turn to turn instructions on the screen, I can't get the spoken navigation instructions to work, even though I've ticked the pertinent box in nav settings. It should not be a pairing issue because the radio sound comes out just fine thru the helmet Cardo comms and the bike's speakers. Any advice?
    Also, I have not managed to play my music on either of my phones (one iPhone and the other is Android); I have set their volumes to max, as advised by many. Some people prefer silence when they ride, I love to listen to music.
    It's funny how many comments on various reviews pooh-pooh the ACC, the TFT ect. I am a former fighter pilot and in my days of flying we used every bit of tech that would help us focus on situational awareness and/or safety. And that's what the new features on this bike, too, are all about. The pilot/rider can choose when or how to use it. If you do not like modern technology, don't buy it. It's that simple.

    Modern safety tech on this motorcycle is certainly attractive. Is long-term mechanical reliability effective enough? I suppose it has to be put through the cross-country riding test before that question can be answered. Overall, the appeal of this bike, with all its comforts and features, for those who are in the sports touring market should be highly considered.
    The only drawback for being a top pick would be the weight and price to upkeep. Motorcycle technology has come a long ways and is steadily improving. BMW sets the standard and pushes everyone else into modernization almost always with cars and motorcycles. Nonetheless, I think one of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers will be the first to build a two-wheel motorcycle that won't tilt over. Good presentation.

Basically it's their cold weather riding jacket, the coldest one that they made at that time & had matching pants too but I really don't wear those unless it's really, really cold, then I'll have the pants on too.
      Rukka does not make a "bad" jacket, they specialize in cold weather riding, well they are from Finland, so they are used to riding in the cold! But they also cost more than the other brands but the jackets last a long long time. Mines 6 years old and I still love it and have had no problems with it, no zipper problems, no tears/rips...etc.

My Tiger 1200 has cruise control but I only use it for short periods then just hit Resume if I want. I like my Triple 1200 smoothness over the BMW boxer on the highway. Well, referring to the comment "doubt BMW can top that", Google Maps is the number one road map provider in the world. And guess what road map provider BMW is using? Yep, you guessed it. And the BMW Motorrad Connected app is free and all map updates are free for life...too. :) So the roads you see in google maps are the same roads you will see in the app. Make a route in google maps, save it, convert the KML file to GPX and import into BMW connected app, done. I've done it, it works. No more terrible hard to use Garmin basecamp! (I know I have a Zumo390 and spent many hours yelling at it on my pc)
      Garmin and TomTom will slowly lose business as more and more OEM's do what BMW is doing (unless they up their game...like improve basecamp). Next Triumph and KTM will do it too...how soon and on what models is the question...then the Japanese...probably in another 5 years or so every OEM will be doing this on a few models.
      OEM navigation is interesting because competition is good for us, the end user!

      @@NothingToProve I did not know BMW used Google maps! That's great! Here in the US, because of so much roadway construction and changes, Google maps takes sometimes forever to update. I like an independent GPS system that's not a dedicated system on my bike and I don't want to have a phone connection to navigate. Phone linked navigation is only good if you have service here and it can get very spotty. I like direct satellite GPS independent of cellular. We do what's called BDR routes (Backcountry Discovery Routes) and none of these are on Google Maps. Most are laid out on TOPO maps with Lat/Long and I just enter the coordinates. Most of the KML/GPX data that is out there for these rides is not very good for these ever changing rides off road. I find Base Camp very easy and have never had an issue setting a route offline on my computer. We may have completely different systems between the countries. Who Knows, Right! Sorry TTRGuy, I was wrong, BMW partnered with TomTom for it's maps, not google maps. I saw in a different video, where they said it was "google maps" and I just checked on the TomTom site and they actually say:
      "Wanting to provide their riders with a custom built-in navigation experience, BMW Motorrad partnered with TomTom. Together, we created a solution that offers the same great tech from our Rider device, a favorite of motorcyclists, via an app that connects to an embedded system on BMW Motorrad bikes. Thanks to this collaboration, riders get the best of TomTom navigation through the BMW Connected app and handlebar display - for easy road trip planning and connectivity - with safe, at-a-glance access to information that's most relevant to them."
      So I stand corrected 😁
      Ride safe,
      Scott

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm still reading about what TomTom is providing to BMW Motorrad app:
      "Through the BMW Motorrad app, riders receive TomTom’s market-leading navigation software and services: maps, real-time traffic, weather and speed camera information. To ensure riders never miss a turn, our up-to-date TomTom Route Guidance provides turn-by-turn instruction. And with access to a community database that offers hundreds of rider-tested routes, BMW Motorrad customers can choose the ones that fit whatever thrill they seek, be it a scenic tour or winding, hilly ride.
      Everything in the solution from BMW Motorrad and TomTom is designed for rider comfort and safety, providing a reliable and satisfying navigation experience.
      Offline and online maps make it easy to get lost in adventure and find the way back.
      With smartphone connectivity, riders can update the app to receive the most up-to-date map data from TomTom. Riders can also download maps before they go to make sure they have access to navigation regardless of connectivity."
      So basically it's the same as if you own a TomTom. I just wonder how much this is costing BMW? LOL!
