Well I eat like shit, yet my cholesterol levels are normally pretty good, so kind of proves the genetic argument. My favorite breakfast is three scrambled eggs covered in cheddar cheese, in a tortilla, smothered with salsa.
I think also people just don't know what healthy means thanks to the predatory food industry. I'm 100% vegan, about 80% whole food, no alcohol, and a dude who eats meat came up to me holding a plate of grilled meat, macaroni and cheese, and creamy potato salad and said "I don't know how you have so much stamina, I eat as healthy as you, except for the beers, that must be it."
Nope, this is one of these people that just drop dead at 40 whilst being on a marathon or something and everyone is like: huh but how, she was so fiiiiiiiiit!
@@goku445 If they ate like crap, okay that might've played a role, but being extremely fit is actually bad for your heart. It really stresses it. Exercise is good but getting to athlete level is taxing on your body
I had to ignore my doctor's advice on cholesterol before I went wfpb. He insisted cholesterol was mostly genetic and diet played no role. He had already lost me when he said I should take it easy with the weightlifting so I didn't get too big like Arnold. 😂
85% of cholesterol is produced by your liver and that is why your doctor told you what he did. Arnold took steroids and who knows what else he was doing with his life, so work out if you like as it will burn up all those carbohydrates if you consume a lot of grains and fruit.
@guitarszen Arnold has himself commented that cutting meat eating was a large part of his response to his heart issues. So, he recognized this as a significant contributor. It's not getting big per se that causes such issues, it's what very often goes into the body as part of that process that is problematic. Yeah, steroids, and certainly meat also.
I'm a former anorexic/bulimic so have no problem offering this non-judgemental comment. I'm surprised that someone who is obviously super knowledgeable about exercise to achieve such a superb physique isn't equally well-versed in nutrition. Can only imagine how she could up her game if she were.
What were her actual cholesterol numbers? Was she 2 points above normal range or 100+? I ask this because influencers are known to make a story out of nothing.
Dr. Saldino, one of the carnivore diet promoting docs, said his total cholesterol was 500 (mg/dL), but that it doesn’t matter. That’s 300 above the normal range, so if this is the diet she follows, it was probably extremely high.
When you showed the “what I eat in a day” all I could think of was “not food, not food, not food”. She’s loading up on sensory treats and no nutrition. Then people are shocked when outward healthy-looking individuals get strokes etc.
I had high cholesterol (6,4 mmol/L = 247.5 mg/dL) at 18 even though I was swimming a lot and was in wonderful shape. I had a consultation with a nutritionist and changed my eating habits. I was able to get my cholesterol down to 4,6 mmol/L (177.88 mg/dL). I am vegan since I am 30 and now at 51 my cholesterol is 2,3 mmol/L (88.94 mg/dL).
@@christinefournier685 Your total cholesterol is 89?? That's insane. I'm WFPB, no oil, super athletic and active, no alcohol, and my TC won't crack 155, at best
she has talked about how her exercise is anxiety driven. honestly seems like she went from whatever other type of purging she did before, to exercise purging. which is so damaging to mental health and social life and even physical health (injuries, strain on joints). it might have been a sort of harm reduction but she still has a long way to go. and just because someone looks cute doesn't mean they're healthy.
exercise purging is also more socially acceptable which can lead to the binge purge cycling going unnoticed. ultimately your life shouldn't revolve around managing your food and exercise, you need time to live😭
yep. people don't realize that this is still bulimic behavior. when I was bulimic, my way of purging wasn't always self induced vomiting. It was also not eating a single thing for days at a time after a binge (this was a big part of my bulimia) or over exercising. Eating disorders have a way of sneaking up on you. You will think you're in recovery one moment and then realize the next you've just replaced your old disordered habits with new, also disordered, habits.
i'm also 19, i have a family history of high cholesterol, a past with eating disorders, and i work out daily, but my cholesterol is at a perfect level. maybe my being vegan has something to do with it 🤷
same im the first non obese in my familyl and non hihg cholesterol.. they laugh less at veganism seeing me do backflip whiel they use wheelchair (they not injury or ill.. just overweight and lack energy motivation)
I think it is. If we have a history of high cholesterol or diabetes or heart disease it's even more important to eat while food plant based low fat. I agree with you
Being obese/overweight IS disease/unhealthy/injuring oneself tho!! The fatness might be the way the human body has to cope/deal with all the poison (aka things Americans refer to as “foods”)…the poisons are so harmful to the body they injure it every time they are consumed!! When you start to lose the weight your body has to detoxify all the heavy metals/toxins/pesticides/ets that we’ve eaten since it’s all stored in our fat…I didn’t realize that at first when I started to lose weight but my thyroid level started to rise because it was detoxifying so much so I added a little brown sugar and or tiny bit of oil so I wouldn’t be losing weight too fast instead of 2-3 lbs a week I cut it back to 0 until I checked back with my doctor but they agreed it was due to weight loss/detox and so now I got rid of oil/sugar but just really trying to eat more whole plants before I was only eating 2 times a day because I’m not so hungry but now I make sure 3 big meals and for me now I’m losing about 1-2 lbs/week but it will be several months before get my thyroid checked again… as far as “no motivation and no energy” well obviously when a human is sick they’ll have less energy AND motivation so that’s why the plant based docs recommend to start eating healthy first (not only does exercise not help so much with weight loss but it’s not a great idea to exercise when one is sick! Humans are supposed to rest when sick/poisoned/injured!!) so once you start eating healthier then you’ll start to feel better/not so sick and then you’ll have more energy and this will also help with the motivation then once you have more energy!! Dr Barnard recommends that you take a few days recording what you eat what you like then make a list of alternatives and if you eat out lots then try to look at those menus and pick salads(make sure no cheese or no oil milk in dressing)or find a place that has baked potatoes (Wendy’s is the only fast food place in my area with baked potatoes) instead of French fries. Some Chinese restaurants have steamed vege dishes with no sauce heck canned fruits and veggies are actually pretty cheap/very healthy too! There are alternatives you just have to figure out what works best for you and it’s helpful if it’s written down…
I've never had a blood test but when my GF went vegan with me, the doctor asked if she had started statins or something because he couldn't understand her bloodwork. And she isn't even WFPB.
She just doesn’t eat any animal products but things like Oreo cookies and veggie oils and margarine and table sugars are technically “vegan” but these ultra processed plant foods are still unhealthy even though they’re plants. Whole Food plant based is the date instead of the ultra processed date sugar or a peanut instead of peanut butter or the wheat berries or 100% whole wheat instead of bleached enriched white flour or olives instead of olive oil or an orange instead of orange juice or a whole potato with the skin or make sure to eat the apple peal too! Eat as much of the whole plant as possible there are even videos where people are using the banana peels to make fake “bacon”…instead of being wasteful or throwing away perfect edible parts of your food…these parts are often very nutritious and or full of fiber too!
Vegan is healthier than all the other diets except whole plant foods are even healthier seeing how vegans is only excluding animal products which is very helpful for one’s health but the best option for health is to not only exclude animals but also the highly processed plants because usually the processing removes all the fiber…and many times other nutrients as well. But Americans are 95-97% deficient in fiber…so we should pay special attention to fiber and make sure we are getting adequate fiber…if one was going to recommend anything to pay attention to it would not be protein/carbs/fats/vitamins/minerals/etc it would be fiber. The more the better our ancient ancestors were eating 150 grams of fiber a day! so the more the better!! Beans/peas/lentils have highest and grains have high amounts then veggies then fruits have some but are more water/carbs than fiber…the fiber supplements are not the same/not sn adequate/great source of all the fiber we need because there’s different types of fiber…
There needs to be some kind of balance between not fearing food and not causing disease with foods that are associated with said diseases. I'm sure it's not easy to strike this kind of balance, but I feel like it should be the goal.
if you dont fear any food and dont obsess about it, youd likely go for foods that make you feel better and healthier. im not afraid of chips but i feel nasty if i eat a whole bag. so naturally i just dont 🤷♀️. like i dont understand people who only buy poptarts, cereal, cookies, chips, etc with not a single vegetable or fruit. id feel awful eating only that even tho i have nothing against those foods.
To Mic the Vegan: A bear is a omnivore. A chimpanzee is a omnivore. A chicken is a omnivore. Omnivore is a organism that eats meat, vegetables, fruits, fish and many other things. Is this true? Is this accurate?
I think it's about being somewhat ritualistic in what you are eating. Let's use the example of the Asian fusion restaurant she went to vs eating at a Korean lunch restaurant. The Asian fusion restaurant she went to lacks foods that would ordinarily limit your meat intake, but is focused on getting you to buy high priced meat dishes. It lacks structure or the structure is designed to work against you. If you get sundubu jjigae at a Korean restaurant (and I'm using this as an example because this is more likely to preserve Asian meal structure), the structure of the meal will force you to eat healthy items. The jjigae is a fairly healthy dish concept because it's primarily tofu in a savory broth with maybe a little pork or sea food(and an egg cracked in). In times of scarcity, the jjigae stretches the animal products out. In times of plenty, the jjigae regulates the consumption of the meat. This stew is served with a side of rice as well as several plant based sides like mung beans, kimchi, or pickled daikon. Again, the broader format of the meal forces the consumption of vegetable products. The same can be said of a lot of Chinese and Japanese meal structures. It always struck me that a lot of Wakoshu meal concepts have very well regulated tastes of salty things, things that are fried, things that have intense salt and sourness, and things that are savory; but this is actually still interspersed with pickled vegetables, roots, salads, soy products, and things that generally taste green. The meal becomes enjoyable due to contrasts rather than pure high fat content+savoriness. Following these concepts at home can give you a balanced diet. Following them in an a la carte Japanese restaurant in the US will probably save you $50 a person.
@@MictheVeganYou've been destroyed again by professor Kay! 🤣 Why won't you debate him on the subject of nutrition? I think I know 🤣🤣🤣 th-cam.com/video/xncEXbJSF6Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OwXk0wizFSmDTK0v
It sounds like adding instead of removing from her diet would work for her, essentially if she was to add more fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, beans and lentils to her diet, then her cholestero will begin to drop, she can still eat whatever she wants but now that she's adding more variety to every meal, she will fill herself up on the healthier options, leaving little to no room for the unhealthy options.
I think part of the stereotype of long distance runners having high cholesterol is the fact that they eat thousands of calories of easy food to fuel it which will often include refined carbohydrates and fats. As someone who does a fair amount of running I have to eat oats, nuts and fruit until uncomfortably full to get enough calories in for longer runs.
You should look into the tarahumara tribes of Central America…they don’t calorie load before their 200 miles runs…animals make us less than 5% of their diet and they will persistence hunt birds/deer which means they chase after the animal for a few days till it drops from exhaustion!!?? To “hunt” it…not only do the men long distance run but the women do too! Sometimes they run for hours but other times they run for days…they eat mostly corn but some potatoes/sweet potatoes/other veggies too. They run in sandals. Extremely low rates of “chronic diseases” like diabetes which makes sense given their diet/lifestyle…they run together like they don’t run to compete! Sometimes they’ll pass a wood ball as they run as a group/teamwork…they’ve been studied extensively because of their ability and “oddities”.
I've been a long distance runner and cyclist for 15 years, used to eat crap now WFPB. No problem in having enough calories for longer runs, you should be fueling on fat mostly (body fat, not fat your eat) and a bit of fast sugar if you're bonking. Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, all the fuel you need to replenish your glycogen stores. Oats and nuts are more for protein and fruits are for fun and health, not really a basis for energy.
@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος Refined carbs and gels with the lack of fibre would lead to higher cholesterol levels. Not by jacking them up by themselves but by not clearing them due to the lack of fibre and resistant starch etc.
I had high Cholesterol. The Kaiser Nutritionist sat me down with the plastic food and went over what I should eat. The Highlights were eat pizza on your birthday, eat meat 3 times a week, 2-4 eggs a week and 1 piece of cheese a week on a sandwich I was also having a cup of kefir a day. That didn’t work so well. It barely came down. So I started cutting out the animal products gradually. First no meat, then no dairy milk then no fish and replaced it with beans, sweet potatoes squash and lots of veggies. I cook only vegan foods. My weight (35 lbs) and total cholesterol (120 points) eventually came down. I still love pizza on my birthday.
I have been making pizza with tomato sauce, mushrooms, vegan pesto, hazelnuts, sweet red onions, pineapple, olives, and fresh leafy greens after it comes out of the oven. I find it very good.
Your entire plight is cause by thinking that so called elevated cholesterol is a problem. Meat, eggs, and dairy was your best option. But like I always say, people hear “cholesterol” and become wimps. Now you believe eating toxic nutrient deficient plant food so that you can crash your cholesterol and other hormones is a good idea. Good luck with this.
Well, I had high cholesterol my whole adult even from my teen's years. Went whole food plants SOS free in my early 50's and it dropped over 100 points, funny right no drugs. 220 too 116

Eating disordered past or no, if her WIEIAD vid is typical, that's exactly what you would eat to develop heart disease. It could be that she was advised to eat whatever she wants to recover from her disordered relationship with food, and this is just a case of overcompensating by eating everything without question and overexercising. I feel bad for her. Thanks for posting!
I worked with a dietician for several years on ED recovery. My ED recovery was grounded in the principles of intuitive eating, where the first step was to let go of the restrictive mindset of good foods/bad foods. It was the only thing that stopped the restrict, binge, repeat cycle for me. This is only the first step though. Eventually you move through all of the principles and arrive at the last principle, which is to focus on health promoting foods. This was a 2-3 year journey for me, and when I arrived at the last step, I felt that I had repaired my relationship with food enough to not revert to ED behaviors . I discovered healthy eating, specifically eating Vegan, made me feel so so much better. However, if I had not done at the work to get to that point, there would be no way for me to try and maintain a vegan diet - I am confident I would have reverted to a restrict binge cycle because the vegan diet is somewhat restrictive, and I can see how it would trigger binges for those who haven’t gotten to that place in their recovery. I think your instinct to not comment on a 19-year old’s ED recovery was right - there’s so much you don’t know about her recovery and her celebratory 1 year what I eat in a day video is probably not representative of what she really eats. I do hope that she chooses to go vegan at some point because the health benefits are great, but she may not be at the point in her recovery that she can do that in a healthy way or maintain the lifestyle. Bottom line - ED recovery is really complex and often the first step is stop restricting foods, which is why vegan diet may not be an appropriate step for her right now. Anywho, love your videos, and I know you come at your video from a place of love! I just think you missed the mark here.
I don’t think he missed the mark, she shared this globally and said her healthcare provider was wrong. Her healthcare provider is correct, she should literally just add in some more veggies to lower her cholesterol. Which isn’t normal especially for a 19 year old. She doesn’t even have to get rid of foods at all or go vegan. Just be aware that greens have a purpose.
I’m been Vegan for 15 years. Changed my diet because my cholesterol was 245. I was exercising 6 days a week. Ran about 25 miles per week. My doctor wanted to put me on a statin but I refused and switched to a plant based diet over night. 3 months later my cholesterol was 170 with normal LDL and triglycerides. Fast forward to today - my total cholesterol was 303, dropped to 296 after increasing the amount of fiber that I eat but my LDL is 195 and my triglycerides are way above normal. I’m still Vegan but I started using olive oil in my daily salad dressing and was eating Beyond Burgers, Vegan pizzas, and Impossible Burgers occasionally. I also started hormone replacement which likely had an impact. My point is Vegans can have abnormal lipids. In my case it is likely hereditary because my mother has the same issues. It can be fixed with diet but your diet has to be strict if you are someone like me.
Did your doctor not speak to you about familial hypercholesterolemia? This is indeed hereditary (I have it, too) and does need treatment. The statistics without treatment are pretty shocking.
I'm 26, most people in my family have high cholesterol. My grandpa and uncle both died of heart attacks at 66 and 51 respectively. Last year someone I knew around my age died from a blood clot. It's starting to scare me straight. I've lost a lot of weight the past few months through exercise and calorie counting but I'm trying to switch to a more plant based diet. I don't want my life to be half over.
Cholesterol doesn't course heart disease. Genetic clotting risk factors, high blood sugar from a high carbohydrate diet and chronic inflammation from vegetable oils and smoke etc. Don't listen to vegans you'll end up with diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. Heart disease doesn't exist in hunter gathers in east Africa that eat nothing but meat milk and blood, no sugar no vegetables oils no processed foods, the vegan diet is all high carbohydrate highly processed junk foods just look at beyond meat 😂
I do have sympathy for her tho, but I get what you mean, since just like a lot of vegans, I only came to realize that so many people have some kind of serious digestive issues, allergies or mental health problems after I turned vegan. Except the crazy rash all over my body after having dairy products in my pre-vegan days, to my knowledge, I have absolutely zero problem digesting or absorbing whatever I consume even though I've been super skinny. But, yeah, I'm also trying to be more considerate
I hope she reads the comments too, we've been pretty nice and there is a lot of useful information for her down here aswell. Hope she sees the light and goes whole foods plant based exclusive no oil (it's quite a mouthful lol, but vegan just doesn't suffice coming to health).
A bear is a omnivore. A chimpanzee is a omnivore. A chicken is a omnivore. Omnivore is a organism that eats meat, vegetables, fruits, fish and many other things.
@@taylorfusher2997 Yes, true omnivores have the anatomy and physiology designed to consume both plant and animal to maintain health and vibrancy. Although modern humans are increasingly consuming more and more animals and animal products, they are not designed to do so. Humans have the anatomy and physiology of frugivores and herbivores who can tolerate a little bit of occasional meat without dire consequences. True omnivores, for example, do not get heart disease from eating meat. See Dr. Milton Mills’ lectures titled “Are Humans Designed to Eat Meat.” He does comparative anatomy for all categories.
When my labs came back with high cholesterol of 265, my doctor wrote me a prescription for statins and said to watch my diet (without saying what that really meant). Instead, I went WFPB, lowered my total cholesterol to 170 in a few weeks and fired the idiot doctor.
I hate that advice, watch what you're eating without any information. Like looking at your piece of bacon for 2 minutes will make it less unhealthy ;).
Nice. When I turned 61 I had labs indicating my cholesterol was 275 (and very high triglycerides as well). The doc wanted me to go on statins immediately. Fortunately, I said no, and give me 12 weeks. I went immediately on a vegan whole food regime, and eliminated added oils. Like you my total cholesterol dropped to 169. I think the doc was more shocked that I actually committed to a lifestyle change --- so many people just don't want to change their habits. Now, four years later, I'm still maintaining a reasonable cholesterol and triglyceride levels. But I do have to reign in my poor eating habits from time to time.
I’ve had high cholesterol since I was a child. I went vegan for 4 years. I did mostly Whole Food and lower fat. I got my blood checked and my cholesterol was still abnormally high. I really think genetics does play a huge role. My cholesterol didn’t lower at all on vegan. I’ve always been a healthy weight too. I’m only sharing to comfort anyone who feel frightened by this video because some of us I believe have higher cholesterol and we can’t really control it.
This woman claims her doctor diagnosed her with 'high cholesterol'. That's far too vague. Which number is too high? LDL? Triglycerides? Total cholesterol? And too high by how much? I can't help but suspect she's simply manufacturing controversy for clicks. Her diet is appalling and I have a hard time believing she doesn't already know this.
Having a bit of experience with the eating disorder recovery world, the one thing I had a major issue with was their teachings that “no food is bad food” and what ended up happening 90% of the time was that the people in recovery would end up eating fast food, frozen dinners, cake, cookies, chips, etc. multiple times a day because these professional dietitians told them “none of these foods are bad. Food is food. All food is just energy.” All the while these same dietitians are eating salads and drinking Diet Coke (the patients were not allowed to consume Diet Coke or try eating cleaner). I understand why they take the approach they do but I also completely disagree with it. I believe you can help people recover while also teaching them healthy habits and lifestyle changes
Part of me wishes she is just trolling with that absurd diet. There is no way, no friggin way, she could seriously think that is a healthy diet. Sad af!
People who go through eating disorder treatment would be told by professionals that they are doing awesome based on refeeding protocols but they don’t really transition people into not eating like that anymore.
i had high cholesterol when i was a child, and i had to eat healthier and it went away then when i was 13 or 14 i found out i had it again so i went vegetarian. now i’m 21 almost 22 and i went vegan a few months after going vegetarian. and i haven’t had high cholesterol at all. after it happening the second time i knew that i needed to make change but i ended up finding out about the cruel animal agriculture industry.
She sounds immature and obsessive, she may be spreading her strange eating to younger girls.Parents dont let your children on social media. There is a feedback cycle recording the self and getting comments. Athletes dont normally eat pizza cookies and ice cream on season.
Thank you for trying to be respectful! I truly hope she (and anyone recovering from an eating disorder!) doesn’t do any rash change but slowly add fiber and lower dietary cholesterol :)
Honestly she sounds annoying and it sounds she didn’t tell her doctor about her habits that is already doing. I don’t think the doctor had the full picture and it sounds like instead of telling the doctor she got an attitude cause she is going to have health problems.
Hey you’re super off base here. A) it’s not weight that matters alone, it’s body fat percentage: If she has low body fat percentage, that’s dangerous B) Eating disorders lead to more deaths than your statistic, because they lead to so many long term health issues especially in women (poor bone health, fertility issues and so many more) C) For those of us recovering with binge eating disorders, while we were binging we likely had a very unhealthy diet. BUT anyone telling me now to mess with my diet triggers my restriction mentality and makes me eat way less healthy. Counterintuitively, if you tell me I can eat all the fats I want, I’ll likely eat fewer fats. Honestly following the advice of this video would lead to my cholesterol levels rising.
19 year olds can feel invincible. Youth hides a lot of damage that might be taking place. She has time to reverse her diet but better to do it before serious symptoms come.
I don't even feel bad for this girl. Honestly, play dumb games win dumb prizes. I don't know why so many of these "i'm recovering from an eating disorder" kinda people recover with the shittiest foods like the food itself doesn't even matter. I know for them it might not matter as much as actually recovering but dude what's the point if you're just gonna be unhealthy in a different way? Stupid.
I'm glad I found this. I do have FH (familial hypercholesterolemia) which is about as common as diabetes now, and have been eating plant based for over 23 years. So I have essentially had zero animal products in the past 23 years. However, my levels on my last test were extremely high, and I had an abnormal carotid scan showing significant plaque build up, it was likely building up with my own lipids since I dont eat any animal products. I immediately switched over to Dr.Esseslystyn's heart disease reversal diet and may need to go on meds or injection if it doesn't improve. I have had side effects from statins in the past. Just saying plant based doesn't always resolve high cholesterol for every body, or sometimes doesn't make a dent. I wasn't eating the faux animal products or a lot of processed "vegan" junk, but I wasn't a whole food plant based either. So, for people who have extreme levels of cholesterol, please look into Esselstyn as a way of life if you can't or won't use medication to help manage it.

Current literature does not implicate dietary cholesterol in increasing systemic cholesterol. So far, all we've gleaned from Human RCTs is that increasing saturated fats in your diet will increase your LDL cholesterol. Low SF foods that contain dietary cholesterol should be fine to consume.
Glad you talked about the deaths attributed to restrictive EDs. While sad for those individuals and families - this is objectively not a pressing public health concern, and it's used far too often as a way to excuse awful dietary practices and recommendations
Unnatural Vegan talked about this, too, which I thought was a brave thing to do as there's alot of social pressure now days to simply focus on psychiatric disorders related to eating, ignoring the broader impact on health that a poor diet can cause.
Could you do a video one day on how to read Nutritional information, allergy warnings and ingredients lists on products? I have friends who just keep on giving me non-vegan gift food and lately I looked up "how to read food labels" on TH-cam seeking something to send them one day so they can personally benefit from this knowledge they seem to lack, but ALL the most well-produced videos are by TH-cam health influencers I really would rather not link them to. If I had a better vegan video to link them to which was by a vegan, not someone who literally recommends keto, it would help a lot. The main friend i'm thinking of is Filipino, and I'm Australian.

I also got the "healthy diet/more exercise" advice when labs got flagged for high cholesterol. Already doing plenty of both. The end.
Samsies. My brother (an MD) said to look at my ratio of the two kinds and that was fine but now I’m reading. that it is still not good: with too much good cholesterol boosting overall cholesterol number it is not okay (according to my doc) so she told me I need to reduce peanut butter, avocado, tahini etc.

If the person is eating a regular amount of healthy and unhealthy fats and both their LDL and HDL cholesterol are raised, it could be a genetics thing. Some people are hyperabsorbers of cholesterol, all kinds of it. It means they do need to lower the amount of cholesterol they're eating because their body is absorbing too much from it
Just came across this video. My friend's husband had a family history of hyper-cholesterol. Meaning -- it was high regardless due to genetics. Anyway, her 19 yr. old daughter who was maybe 116 lbs. had it too. (The doctor told her to go on a diet.) Her husband didn't take the statin pills he was prescribed and had a heart attack at 45. despite being a thin, fit-looking person. I don't pretend to understand everything, but just wanted to put this out there that this also could be a possibility.
I was like 20 or 21 myself when a standard work check up and they found out I had high cholesterol. I was very active at that time and found it really weird. They said they really didn't want to administer statins when I was that young but no one actually gave any advice on how to lower cholesterol, other than to exercise more. When I went WFPB at 26, at 1 year I did blood tests and I was heart attack proof.
OK another point. Yes cheese is full of saturated fat, but the food matrix effect of chesse seems to mitigate that effect to the extent that low fat and high fat cheeses seem to have similar effects on LDL. This also applies to milk and other fermented dairy products but does not apply to cream or butter where the matrix has been broken down somewhat.
I can understand concerns about re-triggering an eating disorder. Proceeding with caution makes sense ... but so does looking for ways to cut serum cholesterol. Perhaps some small incremental changes. Also, there HAVE been people who stated eating a vegan type diet in response to an eating disorder - putting a primary focus on health, as opposed to weight/body image concerns. So that is possible.
Mic’s comments about the effects of genetics are quite ignorant. The paper he cites about the effects of genetics actually says some mutations can elevate LDL by up to 1000%.
My partner has high cholesterol like her father. It is weird because she eats much better than most, but her LDL is higher than my total! Her Dad, even tho he was fit and did multisport and cycled had a heart attack, quadruple bypass then a cardiac arrest in his late 60's and it's a miracle he's still here! But now he can't do much :( So it's not something to ignore as it does catch up with people.
As she gets older she may not maintain the same level of exercise, so if she doesn't transition to a healthier diet she will have endless health problems, including a return of disordered eating. By the looks of things, her eating is still disordered, right now. I'm pretty sure that was binge eating.
Ok, Mic, I love your content in general but you overstepped here. As someone who has been diagnosed with and eating disorder AND has an MPH AND is vegan, I would like to point out that the health effects of anorexia/starvation are still VERY REAL even in individuals with a normal BMI if their body fat percentage is still very low. Additionally, many of the health effects of anorexia are present in athletes simply due to the incredible amounts of stress that their bodies endure (ie. female athlete triad). It is also HIGHLY inappropriate to assume a person's eating disorder "type" simply by looking at their body. There is plenty of literature surrounding this topic, and I would encourage you read more of that to familiarize yourself with the spectrum of eating disorders that exist REGARDLESS of BMI and body size.
I really don’t like the argument you seem to be making while comparing the mortality rates of cardiovascular disease and eating disorders. It seems like you’re arguing that if you need to risk an ED to make diet changes that you should do it anyway. Anyone who has battled an ED understands the terror of it being triggered again. To dismiss that fear is gross.
I know this comment isn't that relevant to this video, considering what what the young woman ate, but I was on a whole food plant based, low fat diet and was exercising daily, yet my doctor told me I had high cholesterol. I eventually narrowed the cause down to excessively late nights, and the triple strength unfiltered coffee (high in cafestol oil) I was drinking. Apparently unfiltered coffee is a significant contributor to high cholesterol levels. There is a video on Nutrition Facts (with Dr. Greger) that goes into it in detail. I hope this helps someone, somewhere.
This is a great video to also highlight that just because so many fitness influencers look healthy much of the time they are not healthy at all. Looking healthy doesn’t always mean actually healthy.
She didn't say what her cholesterol level was but around 23 years ago David Letterman a tall slim guy had a total cholesterol level of about 600 mg/dL, he was around 52 and then had quintuple bypass surgery, he said it was genetic since his father died from a heart attack in his 50's.
I have been strict WFPB no oil, no sugar, low sodium for over a year but recently (last 5 months) my blood pressure has gone from healthy numbers to levels where they want to put me on meds. My HDL is also low and my tryglecerides are getting high. I can’t think of anything that has changed in my diet. My doctor insists I need to start adding in 1tbsp of olive oil a day to raise my HDL. Very confusing because oil has been something that I understood to be unhealthy.
Well done on staying objective and respectful in this video! On a different note, I am glad to see that Boba Fett has apparently turned his life around and is now putting his skills to good use, hunting down the causes of unnecessary diseases! :P
People like this unfortunately go from an unhealthy relationship to food to an unhealthy relationship with fitness. You don't need to run 7 miles and lift weights every single day, that's becoming obsessed with fitness
My cholesterol runs high also. BUT my doc back then was more alternative and ran a test that analyzes the size of the good and bad particles. Turns out my good is small and bad is high. So as I understand it this allows my good to get caught in the "wrinkles" of my arteries and the bad can't fit in those "wrinkle" and will be excreted instead of hanging out in my body. I was about 40 when I had that test, my doc told me not to worry and since then I've gone WFPB (I was ovo-lacto then) and I'm 70 now and my current doc has no concerns with any of my test numbers.
Peter Attia and others discuss this often, but particle count seems more important that size. ApoB measured that. Having more "bad cholesterol" particles will raise the risk of things going wrong regardless of their size.
@@purpleblueunicornldl that delivers the cholesterol where it's needed. So theres no inflammation there no ldl. Reduce inflammation. Lot of inflammation is caused by plant toxins. My dietitian and psychiatrist calmed me down with the information you present here. They asked my PCP to just leave the topic alone and check it in 6 months and again at a year, and it got back down to normal when I got to a healthier weight.

My husband has “tried it all” and his cholesterol has always been high, his triglycerides out of control and 3-4 times the norm. He finally decided to go low fat vegan and in less than two months his blood lipids are now within range. He hasn’t had his blood results in range since he was a teenager and he’s 40 years old. His doctors kept telling him he had familial cholesterolemia and he needed statins. I guess he didn’t 💪🏻
I wonder if for people with eating disorders if it would be better to focus on addition not subtraction? For example if you just focus on increasing your fiber intake you would naturally reduce other more harmful foods without the "restriction" mindset triggering issues. I'm no expert but I know the mortality stats for eating disorders are alarming. Ignoring high cholesterol is not a healthy mindset either so I hope she can work with a good nutritionist or doctor on that.
I had an eating disorder for 35 years. I suffered from anorexia and bulimia. It was awful. When I went vegan my relationship with food changed and I stopped bingeing. I started eating wfpb and now I eat more food and am healthier than I ever have been. Also I know I’m not deliberately contributing to someone else’s suffering. ✌🏻💚
I'm 42, workout 5 times a week, have no extra weight and eat mostly vegetables...and still have always had a tendency to high cholesterol since a very young age because, my body simply produces it. Still, I can't understand people who get upset with doctors for not being psychic wizards who already know of their lifestyle, and therefore give advise according to what 95% of the population does, which is "have horrible daily habits". So many of us are in denial about how healthy our eating actually is.

That was probably code for "don't take roids"

I ask this because influencers are known to make a story out of nothing.
That I am curious as well.
If the doctor is telling her is too high, I doubt is just 2 points above the normal range
Dr. Saldino, one of the carnivore diet promoting docs, said his total cholesterol was 500 (mg/dL), but that it doesn’t matter. That’s 300 above the normal range, so if this is the diet she follows, it was probably extremely high.

exercise purging is also more socially acceptable which can lead to the binge purge cycling going unnoticed. ultimately your life shouldn't revolve around managing your food and exercise, you need time to live😭
yep. people don't realize that this is still bulimic behavior. when I was bulimic, my way of purging wasn't always self induced vomiting. It was also not eating a single thing for days at a time after a binge (this was a big part of my bulimia) or over exercising. Eating disorders have a way of sneaking up on you. (they not injury or ill.. just overweight and lack energy motivation)
What does she eat?
Wouldn't her doctor know if she had started.statins😮?

I do agree with this! That is why I made a video about how eating oil can save a life for someone with severe anorexia.

To Mic the Vegan:
A bear is a omnivore. A chimpanzee is a omnivore. A chicken is a omnivore. Omnivore is a organism that eats meat, vegetables, fruits, fish and many other things.

Oops *make up less than 5%…up not us
Carbs do not cause high cholesterol though
I've been a long distance runner and cyclist for 15 years, used to eat crap now WFPB. No problem in having enough calories for longer runs, you should be fueling on fat mostly (body fat, not fat your eat) and a bit of fast sugar if you're bonking. Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, all the fuel you need to replenish your glycogen stores. Oats and nuts are more for protein and fruits are for fun and health, not really a basis for energy.

You still have alot of time if you make better food choices, you can avoid alot of the risk.

What is WFPS?
@@fayejordan175 WFPB is a widely used acronym for Whole Food Plant Based, meaning you eat only whole plant food.
How could she possibly think this is a "healthy" diet. By any standards, be it high carb or low carb, vegan or paleo, this is a disaster.
I bet she would be in incredible overall health (considering her exercise routine) if she had a more balanced diet!
This opposite day nutrition world baffles me.
"You have cancer"
"Bruh what that's old people stuff. I'm fine."
Do any of them eventually veer from anorexia to binge eating disorder or to bulimia?
You can have everything in moderation. Daily isn't moderation.
Part of me wishes she is just trolling with that absurd diet. There is no way, no friggin way, she could seriously think that is a healthy diet. Sad af!
As the litany went on and on I found myself thinking the same thing. Even for a cheat day that was over the top.
People who go through eating disorder treatment would be told by professionals that they are doing awesome based on refeeding protocols but they don’t really transition people into not eating like that anymore.
Yeah, as soon as I saw the pizza, I said out loud. "Are you kidding me?"
i had high cholesterol when i was a child, and i had to eat healthier and it went away then when i was 13 or 14 i found out i had it again so i went vegetarian. now i’m 21 almost 22 and i went vegan a few months after going vegetarian. and i haven’t had high cholesterol at all. after it happening the second time i knew that i needed to make change but i ended up finding out about the cruel animal agriculture industry.
I thought maybe she did the test without fasting. Your cholesterol will go up after eating but should return to normal. But her diet is not healthy.

13 grams of saturated fat sounds kind of low for the average American diet. One slice of cheese is 5 right there. One pat of butter is 2.5 g.

Well done video Mic! I hope this young lady sees this video and takes the high cholesterol diagnosis a bit more seriously.
Hey you’re super off base here.
A) it’s not weight that matters alone, it’s body fat percentage: If she has low body fat percentage, that’s dangerous
B) Eating disorders lead to more deaths than your statistic, because they lead to so many long term health issues especially in women (poor bone health, fertility issues and so many more)
C) For those of us recovering with binge eating disorders, while we were binging we likely had a very unhealthy diet. BUT anyone telling me now to mess with my diet triggers my restriction mentality and makes me eat way less healthy. Counterintuitively, if you tell me I can eat all the fats I want, I’ll likely eat fewer fats. Honestly following the advice of this video would lead to my cholesterol levels rising.
yep i agree

My LDL keeps being around 100 but improving. I mostly have to follow a low fat vegan diet to get better. Also started to do one day a week of fasting. @guitarszen Thanks. I exercise every day at least an hour.
I hate going to doctors who I can look at and see that they are in bad shape. I mean, how are you going to tell me how to take care of myself when you can´t take care of yourself. Some women working out to the extreme can experience menstrual cessation or “amenorrhea.” Extreme working out can lower estrogen in women, causing menstrual periods to stop and cholesterol levels to rise. This may be the case with the young woman. She might not be sharing this very personal information. I had a friend in high school who was studying ballet. She went on an extreme diet and workout regime. She become thin like the perfect ballerina. But her menstrual stopped for months. He doctor told her to stop her extreme regime or she would land in the hospital.

Thanks Mic, I'm not a vegan, but appreciate your work!
I also got the "healthy diet/more exercise" advice when labs got flagged for high cholesterol. Already doing plenty of both. When I pointed out my "high cholesterol" was strictly due to a freakishly high HDL value (159) and asked Dr if an HDL that high should be a concern, he just shrugged and said, "Good question."
The end.
@@naomikriss5208 Your doc told you to stop eating healthy foods because your good cholesterol is too high? I think your brother is the one you should listen to.
@@DrSpooglemon "Good" cholesterol isn't really good though. Sure it's preferable to LDL but it's still cholesterol at the end of the day.
Meaning --
it was high regardless due to genetics.
According to outdated, erroneous medical information.
@@lq4657 do go on. Don't just comment throwaway statements with no evidence. Unless you have no evidence?
Here's a picture of
Familial hypercholesterolemia:
I'm 8 years a vegan,
But total cholesterol is 440
Starting statins soon
Yes, sometimes it's just genetics when it comes to cholesterol.
Could be high LP(a), apparently 20% of people have it and can't do much yet to lower cholesterol. Some take statins at a young age for protection.
Most cholesterol is made by the body itself. You can eat whatever you want it doesn't change much when you have bad genetics.
You can't out-run, or out-train
a bad diet. And although it might be a diet that got her past her eating disorder, it needs refining !
I hope this helps someone, somewhere.
also if you use plant milks, they can be hi in fat.

This is a great video to also highlight that just because so many fitness influencers look healthy much of the time they are not healthy at all. Looking healthy doesn’t always mean actually healthy.
exactly the same with waffles with leila, she works out in the gym, but her diet is awful. loads of cakes, biscuits.

I wonder if for people with eating disorders if it would be better to focus on addition not subtraction? For example if you just focus on increasing your fiber intake you would naturally reduce other more harmful foods without the "restriction" mindset triggering issues.
