I’m 25 and had never taken the supplement prior to September and my blood work showed perfect scores for creatine previously (not too high or too low). I’ve been vegan for 8 years and vegetarian all my life prior to it. I had read that creatine can be found in tofu and avocado. But maybe it just helps create it. I take creatine now because I’m studying for state exams and working out 3-5 times a week and I have noticed that I don’t get tired while working out and I’m able to do more (more weight, more reps).
Fun fact: Our bodies produce our own creatine and many other nutrients. We synthesize creatine primarily in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas using three amino acids: arginine, glycine, and methionine. The body typically produces about 1 to 2 grams of creatine per day. Another fun fact: Creatine is not well absorbed via diet, at least not from animal products anyway. Creatine supplements seem to be effective.

Never more than 20 minutes every other day. Cardio daily.
I'm 74, vegetarian almost vegan, and I take a gram of creo monohydrate a day mainly to support calisthenics which I took up during the lockdown. I used to take more but I developed symptoms of renal failure so I stopped taking it. At the time I had 4 muscle ups. When I stopped the creo my performance dropped from 4 MUs to 1 which I managed to maintain for a year, then I couldn't do it at all. So I went back on the creo at a low dose and a different supplier. I had blood work done to check kidney markers and they were all fine. I'm back to 3 MUs now and I expect to get to 5 before the end of the year. Yes it's slow going but it's fun and it's great to feel strong.
There's no such thing as almost vegan. You are or you aren't. Saying "almost vegan" is like saying "almost not racist." Veganism is a philosophy, not a diet.
@@HolarMusic No, I am 100% corrent - you can't almost be vegan. It's absurd as saying I almost support gay rights or women's rights. You either are either vegan or you are a non-vegan.
I took creatine years ago because I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and some research suggests it might help with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, and it did seem to help some, but ultimately resolving my IBS symptoms seemed to do the most in actual dealing with chronic pain. Recently I've gotten back into taking creatine and hydroxymethylbutyrate because I've taken up strength training to try to get a bit leaner. The evidence does seem to suggest there's a small effect in increasing muscle mass when combined with exercise. Another thing that's really good for muscle gain is getting enough dietary nitrates or arginine, mostly found in leafy greens and roots. It also helps reduce muscle soreness.
So if you supplement with creatine, does that down-regulate your body’s own production of it? If so, what happens when you stop supplementing with creatine? How long does it take to return to “normal” levels of production? Probably studies looking at that haven’t been done yet. But it’s something I’d like to know.
Buyer beware. If you read the comments, One person started developing muscle cramps amd heart palpitations on creatine, and another person's kidneys started having issues, based on their blood work.
I'm coming to this after taking 5g of creatine for the first time yesterday 30 minutes before my workout. I am vegan, been vegan for about 7 years, been gymming almost a year consistently and I was sort of reaching a plateau with some workouts. I don't want to seem like I'm hyping the stuff, and obviously 1 day is barely statistically significant, but Whoa!! I had never had the mental gas and resilience to push myself like I did yesterday. I pushed harder on the bench, pushed way harder on the bicep and tricep workouts, I literally didn't want to leave gym. On top of all that I was just full of good vibes and a lot more conscious as I interacted with people. It's too early on to make any conclusion off that single burst in energy, I'll be on creatine for the next 2 months and perhaps will come back with an update on my progress if any.
@@89Rutger Day 1 on creatine is pretty much my norm now! I'm way more productive in gym. I struggled to go passed 50kg on bench, now I'm pushing 70kg without need for a spotter. My body has benefitted a lot from the extra kick I get because I push more on all workouts. I have a lot more gas to push to failure often, and I don't suffer immobilizing DOMS anymore. I know this well because I can now push my calves more without fear that the DOMs won't make me fail to walk. Previously every time I'd push my calves a lot, I'd fail to walk for a day or two. Now I feel the soreness but still go about my days normally. In general, It's been amazing and has offered me good gains. I recommend it.
Creating definitely made me a little stronger in the gym. I also noticed I retained water and packed on about 3-4 pounds of water weight. If you don’t mind the added weight then I would generally recommend
Used it for about a month. Didn't gain any strength, lost noticeable amounts of hair. That bag is still somewhere at the back of my kitchen closet I guess.
Taking it for only a month wouldn't have any effects at all on strength gains. It takes a few weeks to even get to the saturation point. Then you'd have to be doing quality strength training for at least several months on it to even notice a difference.
Yes for resistance training, no for cardio. Don't know the difference in the effectiveness in men vs women. My understanding is Creatine's effect of causing more water retention adds a little temporary weight which is a no no for most sports involving cardio. GCN a big cycling channel came to the conclusion that cyclists shouldn't take it.
This is great Mike! Another benefit that Team3dAlpa mentioned was creatine along with working out reduced myostatin compared to working out without. I believe the myostatin protein slows muscle growth. It would be cool to see a video comparing myostatin levels between vegan and omnivore diets; that said, there is no comparison between the two for factors including health, longevity, suffering, and impacts to our world.
Been experimenting with creatine definitely going to continue taking it. It’s good for recovery I get a lot of aches and pains from my manual job where I average 12-14,000 steps a day 6 days a week. It’s nice to feel normal and not completely knackered all the time. Also natural creatine production falls as you get older I’m in my 50’s. I take 3-6g a day and I didn’t bother with the loading I accidentally took a double dose once had stomach pain and wind 💨 so it can have side effects.
Saucy. Mic showing a bit of meat himself in this video! I'm interested to know more about the SSRIs and creatine. You might have convinced me to try it.

Sounds like you were taking way too much creatine powder. That's symptoms of too much creatine. Even if you think you were moderate with dosage, just understand that some people have different thresholds with supplements. A normal amount for one person could be way too much or too little for another person.
I did start exercising after years of being sedentary (I’m in my mid 20’s), and was taking a smaller dose per each workout day (no creatine loading). Then I stopped (it’s been almost 2 years since I stopped). At the same time i stopped I also started an SNRI medication for ADHD. you know all your immune cells and the slime in your nose, renewing your damaged tissue, etc. it all takes up protein? i used up 24 packages of tissues when i had the flu (or covid, i didnt test because idgaf) for a week last month. im on keto diet to lose weight, works so far, but i made an exception to drink some honey milk for my throat when i was ill. i always tend to throw in what my body tells me to when im ill, if i know its not smth im addicted to because of chemical abuse from industry. long story short, i was feeling fine (ill but fine), had high fever, epsiodically felt really cold, ate my normal food, arms and other extremeties felt weak (when making a fist e.g.) but overall body told me "its fine, just wait it out". on the fifth day i felt really down somehow and had insane cravings for meat. ate 750 grams of shrimp :D (only thing i had in the house since i freeze some of them for bad times) immediately felt better. you body can store vitamins (some up to 6 years), fats (body fat), sugar (glykogen or in the end also fat), but protein? only thing that could be considered a "storage" is your muscle mass and the body rarely touches that unless it has to (if you skinny to begin with, welp). so yeah, make sure your body as enough bioavailable protein if you get ill and or dont get better afterwards. it most likely has everything else. PS i know its a vegan video and you prob not gonna eat meat but at least stuff more of the high protein value veggies in you. daily (since it cant be conserved).
While there are many benefits to creatine, I always found those benefits kind of unnatural (too good to be true in a way), it's almost like it's pushing the body into a more intense, non-normal state and I worried if there's a price to it in terms of longevity. The best evidence I've seen is a recent huge study of centerians and, among other things, they tend to have low level of creatine. It's not hard science but it makes you question whether creatine is as safe as it's believed at the moment.
@@carinaekstrom1 In that particular study they were measured way before becoming centerians and the comparison was between who made it and those who didn't
Plant based eaters tend to have lower creatine levels in their bodies, as was mentioned in this video. And looking at blue zones most of the centenarians are eating predominantly plant based so i think the low creatine is just a marker that they were eating a healthier diet while higher creatine is a marker that someone is eating more meat so they die sooner. I dont think it's the cause of longevity. I dont think there is any data on whether supplementing creatine increases or decreases longevity in humans because i highly doubt most older generations are supplementing at all. It's all diet related. Studies in mice though showed creatine supplements increased longevity. We aren't mice, but it would take decades to do a similar study in humans, so for now, that's all we have.

I have heard this but in some of the strength training studies they specifically dissolved the creatine in coffee, and still measured significant effects. So I doubt it makes much difference.

He did reiterate at the end that it's non-essential but that it looks like there are both cognitive and muscle-building benefits to taking it as a supplement, especially for vegans/vegetarians. Thank you for sharing. I know high homocysteine is linked to strokes, and that is linked to low B12. I have 2 (non-vegan) friends who had strokes and at least one of them had very low B12. Creatine helps to lower homocysteins. I have been vegan over 25 years, and Dr. Greger first informed me about creatine 3 years ago. We need to share this information more, thanks.
If the cause of high homocysteine levels and strokes are caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency, as is suggested by the papers I read, one should supplement B12 and not mask it with creatine of course
@@synthos999 Sounds simple. But suppose someone does not KNOW they are low in B12, or, cannot absorb it. Many do not know, as 2 of my friends who are not vegan who had strokes...
Creatine builds muscle like caffeine does, they both help you lift more longer. If you don't take advantage of your limiters being relaxed then you will not build more muscle. Old folks aren't exactly pushing an exercise to failure so they sure aren't pushing harder even when the drugs make that possible.
15:03 - it’s probably the small sample size that’s the cause (42 subjects, so assume around 10 people per group), but the the “before” measurement of “veg creatine” vs the “before” measurement of the “veg placebo” (which should have no difference) is of a similar size to the “after” conditions of the 2 creatine groups. The larger increase for veges is interesting enough that you’d want someone to try to reproduce it with a larger study, but I wouldn’t draw any conclusions from this study on its own - a single hyper-responder could throw the numbers out in any group.
Umm, there is a natural source, and it's the best source in fact. The human body produces its own creatine among a plethora of other nutrients many people falsely believe you can only get from animal products. You don't need to intake any. If you need to for bodybuilding reasons, supplementing it is magnitudes better than relying on dietary sources for additional creatine.

Just because a food is vegan, doesn't mean it's healthy to eat it in massive quantities. Lota of people die from heart disease or diabetes that is directly caused by their bad diets ( the majority not vegan diets). By applying your logic, we should talk about the dangers of an omnivore diet, because look at how many people die because of the processed meats and other foods. Sounds stupid? Yeah, because such logic is stupid.
Vegans have significantly lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. It’s never going to be zero but the risk are statistically lower there’s quite a few studies that show this.
Despite numerous health benefits I’ve experienced from going vegan, some of the biggest issues I’ve struggled with since are physical weakness, fatigue, loss of stamina, and reduced mental acuity. I’ve been taking creatinine for a couple of weeks now, and I did notice a slight bump in those areas. The second week, I caught covid, which has been by far my worst case of covid yet, though I attribute this more to the admitted failure of the bivalent booster, along with the regrettable fact I did not book my monovalent booster in time to prevent this infection, and was doubly unprepared when I was refused a prescription for PAXLOVID (which, come January hikes to $1400 out of pocket, thanks US Government, get it while you still can! This variant is easily 10x worse than the others.) So it’s reassuring to hear it’s helping.
My first thought if you are experiencing those symptoms but overall getting other benefits is that maybe you simply aren't eating enough calories for your activity level. Have you calculated your caloric needs and then tracked your diet to ensure your getting enough? When going plant based you do typically have to increase volume because plant based foods are lower in calories. As another mentioned you may also want to check iron levels and supplement if needed but definitely track those calories for a bit in cronometer and adjust if you need to.

Which do you take?
There's no such thing as almost vegan. You are or you aren't. Saying "almost vegan" is like saying "almost not racist." Veganism is a philosophy, not a diet.
@@AK-np4rp veganism is a philosophy, the vegan diet is literally a diet, you are just being pedantic for no good reason, and wrong at that

Great video... again! Thanks for all your hard work and research.
How is it going?
I can do twice as many pushups now after taking cr for a month and feel overall stronger. 46yo, vegan for 12years.
Till then he would have lost all his hair...
I do take creatine. I feel it has improved my performance in the gym. Really interesting video
Working out for 20 years now and Vegan for 10 years. No difference.
That would be interesting.

Long COVID, sure, long vaccination effects, I am afraid.
you know all your immune cells and the slime in your nose, renewing your damaged tissue, etc. it all takes up protein? i used up 24 packages of tissues when i had the flu (or covid, i didnt test because idgaf) for a week last month. im on keto diet to lose weight, works so far, but i made an exception to drink some honey milk for my throat when i was ill. i always tend to throw in what my body tells me to when im ill, if i know its not smth im addicted to because of chemical abuse from industry.
long story short, i was feeling fine (ill but fine), had high fever, epsiodically felt really cold, ate my normal food, arms and other extremeties felt weak (when making a fist e.g.) but overall body told me "its fine, just wait it out". on the fifth day i felt really down somehow and had insane cravings for meat. ate 750 grams of shrimp :D (only thing i had in the house since i freeze some of them for bad times) immediately felt better.
you body can store vitamins (some up to 6 years), fats (body fat), sugar (glykogen or in the end also fat), but protein? only thing that could be considered a "storage" is your muscle mass and the body rarely touches that unless it has to (if you skinny to begin with, welp). so yeah, make sure your body as enough bioavailable protein if you get ill and or dont get better afterwards. it most likely has everything else.
Then the question is if they had low creatine throughout their life or if it was a result of being at the end of their life.
Its effects are very minor. I've been supplementing it for years and I'm not sure if it even works.
@@carinaekstrom1 In that particular study they were measured way before becoming centerians and the comparison was between who made it and those who didn't
@@alexidsa Ok. What was the name of the study?
I have been hearing for years how unhealthy I am going to be?? Seems like in my age group that I am the one who is healthy and younger every year. The great protein myth?
Hey mic, could you make a video on the effects of carnitine, taurine, carnosine, anserine, etc. Those amino acids that are for the most part exclusively in meat. Would vegans get benefits from supplementing these amino acids similar to creatine, which is a peptide just like carnosine.

That would be good info to know cause a lot of pre workouts contain caffeine as well as creatine

I've taken it for periods of time and definitely notice a difference in muscle with no extra effort and it's really cheap. It's basically the only more or less harmless fitness shortcut I can think of, so don't knock it 'til you try it 😅 It's like drinking fine sand, but fine sand that makes the effort of exercising pay off more 🤷♀️

You may just be a little anaemic. Check your haematocrit and iron levels.
What are you eating? I've never had any of those issues. Are you eating enough cals and complex carbs?
My first thought if you are experiencing those symptoms but overall getting other benefits is that maybe you simply aren't eating enough calories for your activity level. Have you calculated your caloric needs and then tracked your diet to ensure your getting enough? When going plant based you do typically have to increase volume because plant based foods are lower in calories.
As another mentioned you may also want to check iron levels and supplement if needed but definitely track those calories for a bit in cronometer and adjust if you need to.
You need to eat more and get blood work done to see if you’re missing key nutrients
Why do you always look like you are recovering from the flu?

You need a serious doping regimen monitored by a doctor to be top 20% athlete also need to know what masking drugs have to be taken to beat doping control and also the half-life of PED’s to deal with random checks. Also applying for a therapeutic exemption so you can dope legally that’s why many athletes have asthma. Welcome to the real world 😂
It is doping for me cause it is not something you get in these amounts naturally.
And I am aware that everyone in professional Sports is taking drugs.@@sid35gb
I think that shirt could have used some creatine :D .... Thanks for the info, I had also associated creatine with meat injestion so this is a good video to dispell that and consider health benefits whenever I hit the gym again
It’s sarcoma. Not sarcanoma or however you pronounced it. Otherwise, fantastic research!
Can you shave your mustache but keep the rest of your beard?
taking creatine supplements makes me feel like total shit. i don't get it. i try all sorts of ways to consume it, and it still makes me feel bad. sleepy, fatigued, icky, stomach ache. i only wanted to supplement because of "Cognitive benefits" being an ADHD person who can't get medication, I need anything that can help.
Gabor Mate has some great books about this.
Also, meditation and yoga 👍
i tried meditation, it's so hard because i can't choose what i want to think of. i mostly live in my mind and rely on automaticity. and my balance is horrible.@@teagoldleaf4137
If you're looking for cognitive enhancements you need nootropic compounds. Check out the nootropics subreddit, you don't be disappointed.
I don't remember creatine being labeled a nootropic, but I can def believe that some obscure tiny study exists that shows an absurd amount of it injected into rats makes them complete mazes quicker or something.
Usually where claims like "creatine helps ADHD" come from. Try nootropic compounds like uridine, phenylalanine, L-theanine, L-tyrosine, etc.
❤
this guy has a yellow complexion which is a result of veganism. I don't know the exact mechanism by which this occurs, but I've seen vegans return to a more rosy, healthy color after they incorporate more meat into their diet
Oh really I've noticed people on the carnivore diet have a very red complexion
Heme iron
Funny, I've always seen people that eat meat have poorer complexions, specifically acne.
@@DEM78976 I think that's people who eat alot of processed food/carbs. Look at carnivores, they have great skin
If you think that all vegans look unhealthy, just try looking up ultra-long-term vegans such as Mimi Kirk, Annette Larkins, Shane Sterling, Stephanie Gerard, Victoria Pearce, Noah Hannibal, Leo Venus, Victoria Moran, Torre Washington, Woody Harrelson, and Tia Blanco.
Fun Fact: It's no longer referred to as ADD, but is all now under the umbrella of ADHD. The more you know!
yep and i mustve been diagnosed right around then cause i was pretty confused
zero whizzle
9:15 adding 1% on top of 5% is itself a 20% increase, so that's pretty significant, right?
