Sure, the Boo cut is cute... but at what cost? Double coated dogs need both layers of their coat. If it is properly maintained (which isn’t easy!) they can stay looking great.

Just imagine it and imagine if someone’s shaving there hair and there dog is next to them and the thingy to cut ur hair cuts ur dogs hair and it never grows like a year

@@leanev my sister used to take her poodle to a cooperate groomers and they cut his skin and never contacted her about it. She only later found out when she noticed him licking his wound. It ended up getting infected on top of traumatizing him. I don’t trust anyone with my baby either.

owners ask for this all the time and it’s not a groomers job to tell them that they can’t do what they want with their dog. it’s an owners job to do ther research and communicate what they want.

And a person who is a decent human would know that no dog should be shaved, changing an animal because you don’t like the way it looks is cruel, in my opinion you shaving your dog is the same thing as you cutting off your dogs tail

Finally, a groomer who doesn’t believe in shaving double-coated dogs! It CAN exist!!
In My area in England any reputable good breeder asks for the owner to sign a contract saying they agreed for their double coated dog to be shaved after explaining to them what will happen so they can’t sue them
Theres plenty of us 🙄 but when you educate an owner till you're blue in the face then refuse so they leave and do it themselves and come back to have you fix their chopshop job.. You then just educate and pray and when they insist you have then sign a waiver and just do it. You cant fix stupid or change someone's mind 90% of the time. I'd rather have the dig safely shaved at my shop then the dog come back with slices all over its body because mom thought that they could do it with their husbands eletric shavers.

If the dog is severely matted and has a double coat then that’s just too bad, it needs to be shaved.

They are also susceptible to hypothyroidism which also leads to alopecia. Always worth looking into
They are also subceptable to preanal hernias. My pom has had two surgeries to repair but will need another this week.

I think all dogs and cats are once the get spayed. It's an endocrine disorder...the sex hormones get skewed when spayed too early. Both my female cats had hyperthyroidism in old age.

My dog is a Pomeranian mix with a french poodle and we had to shave her because she had ticks. Her hair grew back and she's doing amazing. That was like in August when we had to shave her.
Luckily she might not have the double coat gene due to the cross but you can’t always guarantee it. I’m glad your dog is ok.
Either you got lucky or the poodle mix helped with her fur growth

Once a grooming place "accidentally" shaved my pomeranian ( before we got our other one ) and his hair grew back, except you have to brush it quite often because it gets weird looking.
@L N yeah, one of my dogs ( the one with the good hair ) is perfectly fine, we have never shaved him before but we have cut his hair shorter, but his hair is perfect so we never need to brush it, but my other pom's hair is crazy, when it grows longer you need to brush it often bc his hair often gets knotty and then we have to shave him.
I would actually start crying if someone shaved my dogs because you have no idea how hard i work on my dog’s coats

Years ago i took mine to the groomer that we had always taken her to and they let the new groomer do it. She was shaved way to short and had patches that had been shaved bald. She never grew it back. I was pissed!
By “miscommunication” do you me she BEGGED that groomer to shave it despite being warned and then regretted it? Cause... been there

Yeah everyone’s hating on the other groomer but we don’t actually know what happened since we only have the owners version and she’s obviously not gonna admit that she asked for her dog to be shaved now that she sees the outcome. It’s just suspicious and the was not mad about it bc had I not asked for my dog to be shaved and it came out like that I’d be livid.

NgL he actually went from mufasa to lil simba real quick after haircut and we didn't shave just trim the hair lil bit,😂 but he was still rocking it tho,
He entered in a better place when he was pushing 16, Tuffy was a real sunshine will always be in our heart.
Awe Tuffy was my dog's name. (the one in my profile pic) we adopted him when I was 5 and he was 2, and he passed away last year at 17 years old. He was the best boy ever and I couldn't have asked for a better dog to grow up with. Your Tuffy sounds like a gem as well 💙 so thankful for all of the wonderful pups out there that make life bearable.

And yes our tuffy was a real gem we adopted him when i was like 3 so i couldn't even remember and he was 4 weeks old, while groomin our groomer told us he had pink skin under his fur and told us its kindaa rare to find, he never cease to amaze us was really mature, as i was just a child nobody even thought him how to sit but still he was really well behaved and best gentleman I've ever seen, nobody will ever be able to fill the void his passing created in us but there is a part of him will always be in us and we are glad that he choose us as his masters and gave us his neverending loyalty,
On the other hand couple of years after tuffy i adopted "bob" (he is an doberman) i know tuffy and bob is completely different but boy was bob a troubled child he always get into trouble and create mess and he was like always high on caffeine with redbull in it i mean that's the kind of energy he had and all the time like even at 3am,
And i even hire a trainer for bob but he was never as or even as close to 10% behaved tuffy was, in the end i realized that we have to stop searching for tuffy in others coz we would never be able to find such sweet and caring soul.

We have a pomeranian that comes into our salon and looks a lot like this girl - unfortunately the owners have been shaving her all her life, so her coat is far beyond repair, but she's a sweetheart. Thanks for the PSA - it's so important for double coated dogs to be maintained properly!!

The coat will never grow back the way it once was even if it looks that way after a year or two, the insulation part of the coat will not work as well now. If only it were that simple, this puts the dog at a risk of skin cancer from overexposure to sun even in small amounts because the skin is exposed and will never be protected as well by the coat as it once was unfortunately. This is why shaving double coated dogs is a huge deal.

My groomer shaved my aussie shepherd mix at his first appointment after they reopened this summer. His coat is still coming in and we are lucky it is. I didn't give her permission to do it or tell her to. This video is very necessary.

Since we've had our pom, I've only had his hair trimmed twice. No shave! I've also read about it being a no-no. I just wish he would let me brush him more often 😁

Our husky chow mix got a skin infection and lost a huge patch of hair on his back. The infection was treated and his skin healed and very slowly his guard hairs grew back over months. But his undercoat never did. We thought maybe the skin was damaged or something but the vet said its not uncommon for it to just never grow back properly, even when it's just shaved off and there's no damage.
same thing happened to my pomeranian. luckily, her fur grew back, but it’s still not as thick as it used to be.

Sometime they have to be shaved because the owner doesn’t brush them and they are so matted and stink. You have to. It grows back fast though.
No, that's a myth, double coated dogs do not mat, they just accumulate undercoat which has to be removed. And double coated dog breeds do not have their coat grow back fast nor even, it could take years and lots of work to recover the coat. Other dogs with simple coats like poodles maltese yorkies etc. Can be shaved down and their fur will grow back 100% because their coat type is quite different.
I've had American Eskimos since 1998. They get matted around their butts a lot. You cut it off, it grows back fine.
@@mary11976 cutting a few mats with scissor does not equal a shave down but it's still unnecesary. Any skilled groomer could remove those undercoat mats without cutting. And I also know I could tell just by looking at them that they have had their mats cut with scissors. Also nothing to be proud of that you keep neglecting to brush your dog for 20+ years...

Shaving a double coated breed doesn't make them less likely to get heat stroke, it can actually make it worse because they can no longer normally regulate their body temperature.

My poor Pom had to be shaved due to a emergency surgery. Hair is still growing back 8 months later :/. Most of the hair is there but it’s still patchy...
That’s nobodies fault though, it was done for their health. You may have a patchy Pom but I’m sure it’s still cute as ever

I know sooooo many "professional" groomers that shave dogs EVEN WITH THE OWNER EXPLICITLY SAYING NOT TO. They shave because they are lazy and do not know how to do their job. It sucks to see double coated dogs being shaved. I'm glad you actually know how to do your job and are informing dog owners :) keep up the amazing work!!
Perhaps the dogs are matted?! Everyone blames the groomer. I'm a groomer. You should see some of the crap that comes in my door . Its borderline neglect/abuse. And I'm the bad guy for shaving the poor dog down because its matted to the skin. Cmon man. People are lazy. Expect the groomer to fix everything. We ... are .... not .... God!!

Less hair = less shed
There's still the same amount of hair. Its just shorter and will still shed, and will probably be more annoying as it will be short and prickly. If you want to reduce shedding, ask your groomer about a deshedding treatment, and brush daily at home.
It cant be the same volume of hair if the dog is being shaved. So it is less shedding. We had a lab and retriever. The house was unbearable with fur. When we started shaving them there was a drastic difference. And the retriever had some kind skin allergy that bothered him less when he was shaved.

Rule of thumb: If its not affecting their health, don't mess with it. Make sure to research as much about the dog you get. For the love of GOD, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE adopt from peta, not a no kill shelter, peta kills almost every animal they get.

That poor little pup. That groomer looked at her watch. She showed no empathy or concern for that little dog. This is why I never bring my dog to a groomer. I take my time I cover my dog's eyes with a towel I'm careful and I don't always soak my dog with water and soap it's not necessary and never use a blow dryer a human blow dryer will burn them. There is a professional grooming AIR dryer that looks like a blow dryer you can buy one or you can just towel dry your dog. Take it easy wow it should be a nice experience not a rush these poor dogs go through hell at groomers

How do you mistakenly hear “I want my dog shaved”, did they not like say it back and make sure that’s what they wanted? There are a lot of examples out there why you shouldn’t shave a dog like that and the groomer didn’t think about that at least 1 time?
@@harleyandthechicks21 well you could say short cut, or any number of variations on the same thing, or even say go in for a haircut and not explain anything. Some places don't repeat back what you said to verify that's what you want.
So many factors going into it that unless we know the full story from both sides we can't really know what happened. Even then unless we were there we might not know the truth.
