      Yeah, Evelyn is a bit negative and naggy. She projects a lot when she accuses Nigel of being the negative and stuck up one. It's actually her thats like that. Nigel is pretty self aware, communicative and sensitive. Sometimes I wonder if evelyn is intentionally misunderstanding him to try and tear downhis confidence in a passive aggressive way bc shes jealous. I think Evelyn is a pretty fake and dishonest with herself. You cant even tell her shes fat bc she doesn't want to hear it. It really is a health and mental illness issue you know. Outside of western culture- everyone knows this to be true. So then fix it.

    Nigel's a lot more secure about himself. Evelyn is a lot typical Asian who self-censors and checks herself before sharing her thoughts. They complement each other well. Good chemistry.

    • @Checkmate1138
      @Checkmate1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mean, I'm new here, but I think that Evelyn is also secure about herself and who she is. Good thing that Nigel is also secure, though. That's why they can work well with each other.

    • @RohitGupta14
      @RohitGupta14 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Checkmate1138 Not according to what I observe, Evelyn keeps checking herself and asking Nigel why you do things a certain way. Whereas Nigel just does what feels right to him. More instinctual vs more measured.

    Middle age white guy here, I love the podcast. I will admit I spent a ton of my time in Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore among some places). So for me the podcast makes me feel less bad that I'm trapped in a country that is so badly ran no one wants us to travel anywhere. So I think you have a very global reach as many of us who spent time in Asia miss it and get everything you are talking about.

    I would have to say Evelyn is wrong in this one. A guy asking another guy for a shoetree is like the borrower acknowledges that the potential lender is sophisticated enough to have a shoetree. The lender is actually being complimented indirectly. And a guy with a shoetree would lend his spares to another because they know how important it is to keep leather shoes in shape when they are not being worn.

    You are NOT hypersensitive! I've been told this numerous times when I was a teen and I was NO WHERE NEAR "FAT"! I was about 8st but I'm short so I look kinda stumpy. But even I had those comments of "are you sure you should eat that" and I never thought about it then, but now looking back, that was soooo damaging because at a young age I'd started to develope habits of not eating until I was home from school, and just eating dinner, and even making myself sick sometimes. So, Evelyn, my girl, I feel you💞

    Scandinavian countries are very stoic; they expect life to be hard and are thankful when things are going well.
    If you speak about your hardships to them they feel that everyone has their troubles and it goes without saying that life is often hard. They choose to focus their time with loved ones as a peaceful, satisfied time. Expressing hard emotions doesn't make sense as a social activity; they already know you have your hardships and they want to believe you understand that they have theirs. Asians countries do also base social interactions on unspoken understandings.
    Talking about all of your problems to friends would be seen as rude because they want you to understand that they have struggles as a person without having to tell you.
    And to a degree, this is true. Few people live without setbacks or burdens. Focusing on your own can be deemed selfish.

    Most of friendship i know around me is like what Nigel describe! like, 'don't eat that sugar' to a fat or diabetic friend - but we do that in joking tone, and then she/he will state either 'oh i forgot' or 'oh just let me, i am in bad mood' and that's enough. I personally don't care about fat, but if some friend is having food restriction for her/his health, i will warn her/him (in moderate way) =D

    Please review the YumAsia induction rice cooker! I love Zojirushi rice cookers and water heaters but I’m curious about the induction one!

    Fat shaming is as bad as Thin shaming.
    I've been skinny my whole life, growing up hearing all these sayings
    "you should not wear thigh jeans, you got no bum and it's ugly."
    "your bones are more than your meat."
    "the weather report says today's windy, you need to stay at home else you're gonna blown away."
    "I know how to draw you * show me a stick figure drawing * "
    "your arms are the same size as my hanger rod."

    Clearly a new channel about shoe maintenance is required. Viewers would wait in anticipation to see what "Shoe Tree of the Week" was going to be each time - or even "Shoe Horn of the Week" - although that sounds a bit dodgy.

    It's actually very Asian in a way that Asians can actually totally relate but at the same time make other cultures realize... Ohhh... Am I Asian, too? Cos even the thing about "body shaming" that Evelyn talked about so well exists exactly that way in most Asian countries, and.. With Western culture feat White Chicks and VS Angels

      I can relate to Evelyn on this episode so much. Like.. Yes! Accepting your flaws and being comfortable to talk about it is far too different from hating yourself. You can be aware of your flaws, but totally accept it.
