Funny story. I have this whole concert on dvd. I had it for about a year and hadn’t yet listened to the whole thing. I was cleaning the house so I figured I’d play it through. I’m a huge Marley fan so Eric’s cover had always been a song I’d skip. But I was cleaning so i just let it play. And was and still am to this day blown away by this!! He does such a good job of making technical stuff sound totally natural and fluid. Even though each note has what sounds like perfect precision timing. It really does sound like it's singing.
The number of viewers doesn't determine what is bad or good. Clapton is well known for his work in Cream, which was commendable and innovative. (Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were immensely innovative, so that helped.) But since Cream, really not that great. As an electric blues guitarist, he is decidedly meh.
You said it brother... wish he’d “lose himself” more often... instead of being too careful and polished with his guitar playing. This reminds me of his old Cream days!!

He has got something intangible in that heart of his. Or maybe it's his fingers. Not sure. But he is our gift from God.
I`ve seen Eric perform since the `70s. Sometimes he`s wasn`t inspired ( read to drunk to perform ) , other times he was plain God on 6 strings. But it was always something to remember. Clapton is fantastic. I find it humorous when others criticize other musicians, a true display of ignorance. Every musician has their own thing to say, some not as well as others, but it's their voice. If you don't enjoy it, then don't listen. To tear others down only shows your own insecurity.
This guy is the greatest improviser of a guitar solo that I know. They have the musical elements of the songs, the guitar cries, growls, dances, and kicks, and they have an intro, a middle, a development, and conclusion and a coda and the musical idea develops through the whole thing. But is, 'is he actually "improvising"'?
To me, it was never about who is the greatest guitar player, it's about style. Eric Clapton's style was always number 1 in my opinion all the way back to Cream.

+Led ZeppelinFan The guitar is one he had custom painted by an artist he particularly admired and he used it a lot for a period of time. It's an Eric Clapton signature Strat. He most likely has each one of his own guitars made to very specific standards by the people at Fender Custom Shop. I'm guessing the pickups are the vintage noiseless ones he uses now instead of the active Lace Sensors on the original EC Strats. Those do have that special mid boost built into one of the tone circuits and that's how he can get all the extra drive a Strat does not have normally. Just a guess.
