My favorite heartfelt solo from Eric was another version of Old Love, from Albert Hall, from a different year. But it has just been pre-empted by this version. Actually I love them both. Clapton's version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", that I saw him play on a Bob Dylan Tribute show, that PBS aired, is another good one. I finally found an audio copy of it, I forget where, but it was Live at Madison Sq. Garden October 1992.
I've had the conversation with so many people that like to dismiss him, mostly because he didn't die young like Hendrix. Whatever your opinion on his music over the years there is no other guitarist who plays lead with as much power and emotion as Clapton.
Clapton is the absolute best I've ever heard. I've been listening since the Mayall days , Cream and his solo career and have seen him in person. He puts it ALL out there and gives you everything he has.!!!, What a great player who battled addiction and actually became a better player , sober. Thanks , Eric!
There are times when I'm driving a backroad in my truck and I hear him do a song like this on the radio like this version and have to just pull over and listen because it just put's me in another state of mind. Make's me wonder what the hell we're going to do when he's not around anymore. "Eric, your like an aged Irish Whiskey making it real hard to open the bottle.
'In those days'? He is 64 here if the date is right. In '68 to '71 was his prime playing, before his heroine hermitage. Clapton was amazing even as a drunk in the late '70s into early '80s (sometimes). But him sober from '91 on is arguably better. Drug get in the way of the music and he was drugged for over 30 years.
What am I missing? It sounds like typical, colorless, predictable, repetitive wanking overkill. It sounds like every other solo he has played for the last 50 years. Same solo different song..lol

In every live version Eric says "Tim Carmon". One of the great live songs that captures 2 great solos from different instruments. I've listened to every one of them. There's about 3-5 of them here on you tube. All amazing. Must listens.

this is one of the best pieces of music i heard... i really really love his style.. he tells a story with the guitar and its one hell of a journey i feel it. the guitar starts with the "crying" noise and slowly speeds up and then he switch sound slowly towards the more positive and bright, its a masterpiece of guitar solo played to perfection. atleast i think.
In this only song, you might hear at least 10 songs of legend, of ten music bands of legend, as though this masterpiece was the mother and the father of all of them… e.g., Hotel California….and you name them...
Another of literally dozens of inspired performances. I think my favorite moment (at the time of this writing, haha) is @5:50 through 6:05. I also love the distorted bend he uses to lead into the chorus shortly after.

I like Eric very much but I think the variation in this 3.30 of solo maybe only warrants half that length. Personally I prefer the solo he did with Robert on the album version of this song
Bending strings is an art; whether you're bending up to a note, or harder still, if you start with a bent note, and then resolve it. Even harder is bending a full 4th accurately. The ability comes from the soles of your feet, and the soul of your entire being. While a pliable instrument helps, what Clapton exhibits is pure artistry...it comes from heart, hands and mastery.
I know...I've played and taught for over 45 years....there are no shortcuts. And while I use a Timmy overdrive with my main Dr Z rig, no amount of overdrive and effects can ever become substitutes to feeling and technique. In the end, it's always just the player and the instrument, laid bare.

This was not merely bending, certain guitars, especially electric have a certain stick which can be tilted to make that sound.
Bending strings is an art; whether you're bending up to a note, or harder still, if you start with a bent note, and then resolve it. Even harder is bending a full 4th accurately.
The ability comes from the soles of your feet, and the soul of your entire being.
While a pliable instrument helps, what Clapton exhibits is pure artistry...it comes from heart, hands and mastery.
I know...I've played and taught for over 45 years....there are no shortcuts. And while I use a Timmy overdrive with my main Dr Z rig, no amount of overdrive and effects can ever become substitutes to feeling and technique.
In the end, it's always just the player and the instrument, laid bare.
