Opie would literally be a beloved legend right now if he accepted the role of the straight man. Instead he allowed his narcissism and ego to ruin everything. He had a GOLDEN opportunity and wasted it. He could of been the "Ernie Johnson" of radio. Ernie works alongside legends such as Charles Barkley and Shaq and is JUST AS loved as them. Because he directed the show so well, knew when to talk, knew when not to, knew when to joke, knew when to let someone riff, and knew when to lob up softballs for his cohosts and guests. Ernie Johnson is now in the Sports Broadcasting Hall Of Fame and is probably the most popular well-liked sports broadcaster in America. He is considered just as essential as Charles, Shaq, and Kenny on the show. This literally could have been Opie for O&A and radio.
Every once in awhile, I'll check out one of Opie's video uploads of his podcast on TH-cam for laughs. It rarely disappoints. @@jr28778 the "community he created" doesn't hate him. The alt-right pea-brains hate him. Frankly, having you as fans would be more embarrassing than having you as enemies.
From my perspective, and I have heard Anthony acknowledge this, Opie was upset that “his vision”, “his show” started become more about Anthony/Jimmy/guests in studio and Opie became more or less the board operator making sure the show ran within the confines of timing and structure of how radio works. So, Opie couldn’t “get in” on the joke or pile on because he needed to be, some what, responsible. And Opie started to hate that and he just got angry about that. And when Anthony was fired Opie tried to be “the cool guy” again and that is exactly what got Opie fired.
@@3ShotTGK I was saying that Opie’s interpretation of being “the cool guy” led him to thinking that doing that is was okay because his mental illness told him it was “cool”.
My theory on the state of Opie's (non) show is this: He KNOWS he can't do a good show by himself. Sp by putting in NO effort, he can't be slammed for putting in the work and it still being awful. Edit: Literally 30 seconds after I typed this, Ant said the same thing outright. 🤣
Opie phoned it in back in the O&A days. He would spend an hour bitching about not having his starrbucks or some stupid snack. and would get pissed when Ant and Jimmy would go on an hour rant on stuff like driving home from work.
@@americanbadass88 it would really annoy me when opie's pouting was so noticeable, you could hear it in his silence.. ant and jim making with the laughs and o'le black void of humor brooding
This whole thing just shows how fucked up this country has gotten. Anthony gets assaulted in Time Square, he feels threatened by 3 or 4 other animals, so he walks away, goes home and Tweets about it. But the only thing anyone remembers is Anthony's " racist rant"?
The thing that unites both Stuttering John and Opie is that they always aren't honest. They lie all the time. I've never once doubted Anthony's take and assessments. He's always been a straight forward guy and it's appreciated. No one ever doubts Anthony when he tells a story.
That’s the most beautifully put point about O&A that I never really saw stated like you did. “Never once doubted Anthony….” Is exactly it. Same with Jim. He’s sooo honest that he’s an idiot and ruins things. But when Anthony is obviously enjoying coming in and doing radio, but the radio guy is openly unhappy…. That’s what did it

The only reason for Opie at all was to get my favorite "tin knocker" to tell a hilarious personal story that had me rolling. Anthony, you are the greatest.
@@colegreen1291 opie was good as a straight man; meaning he was good for setting up segues for Anthony to play out a character or have a tasty rant. It's too bad they didn't get along off-radio just so the checks would keep rolling in and the entertainment shined.

I started to listening to o & a when I was teenager (and, shock, I'm a lady). 20 years later and I can still safely say that Ant's rants were always the best parts. I still sing Bowling For Behave to myself on a regular basis
Jim Norton stays with Sam because he knows that Sam would never dream of doing anything to rock the boat or cause trouble. After all Jim has dealt with in the past 20 years, especially when it comes to wondering if he can still pay his mortgage, I don't blame him at all for sticking with the secure, easy gig. Like Sam or hate him, the guy is rock steady when it comes to his job. Plus Sam probably signs contracts for 3 years or more instead of 1, like Opie did. Every year, after waiting until the literal last minute to sign.
Both Sam and Jimmy are complete worms who would turn on each other if it suited their career. At least Jim has talent. Sam is very much the littlefinger of radio, he's just schemed his way to the top.
I am 27, though I was listening to Opie and Anthony since 2010 there bouts. Never did Sub to Sirius though. Anthony would stream the show on Paltalk for free and somehow got away with that lol
Someone should make a documentary about Opie's present state. Call it "Gregg Gardens". He seems to be going the same route mentally as Little Edie Beale.
I think what I find MOST HILARIOUS is that Anthony was a high school grad and "Opie" always made it a point to tell everyone he was a (loser) college grad YET Anthony was and is FAR more articulate and knowledgeable than "Opie" ever could be!!!
4:35 I always got those vibes whenever he talked about music and movies. He never actually seemed interested in either, but wanted to appear like he was in the know and usually claimed that his favorites were just whatever was most popular at the time. I don't think he once ever talked about a current movie without mentioning the Rotten Tomatoes score (usually to back up his opinion). But then when it came to all the times Ant & Jimmy went on a classic movie quote spree, Opie would always sit there in silence. Because he had no personal passion for movies, just wanted to go with the current popular flow. Same with music. He actually claimed that Coldplay was awesome. The only other time he mentioned music was as a status symbol of what a knowledgeable radio guy he was. It was most obvious during the jazz and blues bits, where he would try to claim some kind of authority, simply for knowing who Miles Davis and Stevie Ray Vaughan were (the two most widely known names in the genres), That's like bragging that you're an encyclopedia of ragtime for having heard of Scott Joplin. It's one of those personality traits of a true sociopath. Lacking in personal emotion you can relate to others with, they just fake it as best they can to blend in, and the need to command attention and status in the room is the one emotion they do feel.
The nonsense that Opie babbles on about is one thing but the way he speaks and pronounces words is so aggravating that he's impossible to listen to. It's beyond obnoxious.
I truly miss old O & A, imagine if Opie could've been humble and laughed at himself like Anthony & Jimmy could do. Ant & Jimmy remain legends and Opie is the poor looking washed up "Radio Guy"
I never grew up watching but heard "opie and anthony" a million times from adults talking about it. It wasnt until these responses and compilations came out that I got into it retrospectively. I guess im missing 20 years of context but from the clips and compilations it seems like opie is a talentless hack who couldn't handle ant and jimmy being funny. opie knew it deep down and started being grumpy towards them or even going behind their backs with management to fuck them over which is absolutely beyond crossing the line.
If Anthony had been able to sign a 5 year deal for his last contract, he'd have had 3 years left when he was fired and they probably wouldn't have fired him.
It’s not that Opie isn’t funny. It’s that he’s completely uninteresting in every way. He’s incapable of even entertaining a conversation with one person. He can’t tell interesting stories or talk about topics with an interesting point of view. He’s just a bore. And subconsciously he knows this and takes it out on everyone else. It’s way more pathetic than just simply not being funny.
Opie forgets, almost every show from Oct. 2004 until the day Anthony got fired is available to listen to. Antony was the same guy all the years I listened to them. Listen to the old shows, Ant and Jimmy are the same people they've always been.
It still blows my mind that all Opie had to do was sit in the broadcast chair and do nothing and he'd be wildly rich, famous, and everybody would like him.
I came to understand just how insecure Opie is when I joined one of his livestreams. People were asking him generic questions and he was looking for insults in them. As if there was an evil subtext in every comment. I don’t know how people worked with this guy
Opie has 12 different stories about how this all happened. The show ran its course and they were done and it couldn’t be saved but also it would have continued if not for Anthony. He’s such a dope
It's easy to complain about racially based hyperbole (entertainment) when it's the white guy, but Anthony was the mirror image of Patrice when it came to racial. But Patrice was a legend for it.
Opie is delusional and more racist than them all. As Patrice said, it's 'racial', not racist. Ant's racial rants were the best thing on the show, with Jimmy and Opie laughing all along together.
... the ones where he starts yelling about "these people" whose neighborhood is like a "jungle"? He had the proud boys guy on his show etc And yeah sometimes it was just a bit, sure. I always get a kick out of Anthony talking about Opie pushing for 1 year contracts
Can you imagine the joy and delight of the Sirius execs when he kept insisting on it?
" Nah, he can't be stupid enough again this year. Surely he's wised up....wait....YAYYYYY!"
What moron would ask for 1 year contracts? Opie that's who . He didn't understand that if they ever got fired. That SiriusXM would be on the hook for the remaining contract. He was so delusional he thought another company would come calling. He had no self awareness he actually had a inflated ego . I would've been happy being the 3rd fiddle .
It’s especially wacky since they got lucky before with a company paying out their contract after a firing
@@FlashyVic No one, including Anthony, ever said it was poor business, I don't see how that move would benefit executives. The problem with what he did was, by taking until the last hour to sign, it pissed off the office, and could have resulted in them pulling out. And it fucked with all the regular crew and off screen workers because they DIDNT have millions of dollars as a cushion, and were worried about not getting re-signed

I love Ant so much. I truly do! I wish I had the balls & money to speak my mind like him.
I wish Jim & Ant did more together.
I've never understood why Opie's inlaws needed to listen to a radio show that was never meant to appeal to them in the first place.
U mean mother-in-law….dudes get it….broads have their “friends” to answer to
They probably didn’t and opie is using their opinions as the reason he self sabotaged
Because Opie has the brain of a woman
They probably wanted to know a bit more about the guy plowing their daughter, but yeah Opie didn't really add much to the show later on.
Period.

Every once in awhile, I'll check out one of Opie's video uploads of his podcast on TH-cam for laughs. It rarely disappoints. Last favorite funny thing I remember, when he got caught by a stream chatter for repeatedly taking fake big drinks from an empty coffee mug whenever he didn't know what to say or felt awkward. Perfect callback had me rolling when some minutes after he got busted, he did it again, then remembering how he had been outed earlier and damage control attempted with "what am I doin', there's nothin' even in this!" lol --- ♫♪ BAAAH, BA DA BA BA BAAAH BAAAH ♪♫ --- Never change, Opester.

And when Anthony was fired Opie tried to be “the cool guy” again and that is exactly what got Opie fired.
definitely!
Well said. Perfect
That and Opie recording their show booker, Roland, taking a shit.
@@3ShotTGK I was saying that Opie’s interpretation of being “the cool guy” led him to thinking that doing that is was okay because his mental illness told him it was “cool”.
Opie thought he was Mr cool
I love watching this over and over. This time, an ad about autism interrupted it, and that made it even more enjoyable.
My theory on the state of Opie's (non) show is this: He KNOWS he can't do a good show by himself. Sp by putting in NO effort, he can't be slammed for putting in the work and it still being awful.
Edit: Literally 30 seconds after I typed this, Ant said the same thing outright. 🤣
This is what Ant has always said
Lol yea he said this already years ago
The Jon Jones approach, he used to party before his fights so if he lost he had a built in excuse

I know you wanna say the gamer word and I do too but animals will suffice
The thing that unites both Stuttering John and Opie is that they always aren't honest. They lie all the time. I've never once doubted Anthony's take and assessments. He's always been a straight forward guy and it's appreciated. No one ever doubts Anthony when he tells a story.
Plus, no matter what the subject, he's funny as hell talking about it.
I wish they would do a show together! Can you imagine the fights, the stupidity? I'd watch that!
That’s the most beautifully put point about O&A that I never really saw stated like you did. “Never once doubted Anthony….” Is exactly it. Same with Jim.

Ant describing Opie at 5:00 sums up most people on social media today.
hes 60 and he doesn't even say the S word we gotta hire this guy
Someone should make a documentary about Opie's present state. Call it "Gregg Gardens". He seems to be going the same route mentally as Little Edie Beale.
I think what I find MOST HILARIOUS is that Anthony was a high school grad and "Opie" always made it a point to tell everyone he was a (loser) college grad YET Anthony was and is FAR more articulate and knowledgeable than "Opie" ever could be!!!
Actually, I think Ant missed by two P.E credits for a HS diploma.
Or maybe he DID go back to HS🤣... for P.E.?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I went to college and I am an idiot
Anthony is actually VERY smart. "He knows a little bit of everything" was a quote from Opie himself.
With how gay his frat sounded, I wouldn’t be surprised if Opie has some secrets he’s repressed from those days 😂
Anthony did HVAC, a real and respectable manual labor job
Who do you think stole your mirrors!? 😂 Ant speaks truth.
Although thinking that someone has to be mentally ill in order to believe that Ant is a racist...
The nonsense that Opie babbles on about is one thing but the way he speaks and pronounces words is so aggravating that he's impossible to listen to. It's beyond obnoxious.
Opie should apologize to Anthony, to his face and without crying this time. Instead he'll go to his grave with a giant cringe chip on his shoulder.
